See how we make our own leaf compost in our backyard!
Leaves are the best for your garden! We're big proponents of leaving the leaves in place when they fall, but some people live in neighborhoods that require them to pick up the leaves. When that's the case, give us a call, because we're gonna come pick them up! Learn how we use free leaves we pick up from friends to make our own leaf compost over the winter in big bins in our backyard.

      Yay, congrats! It really is! Last year I made a pile of yard waste and leaves and basically forgot about it until the spring. It basically turned into compost on its own, haha. I used it to fill up the bottom of some of my raised garden beds, which saves a lot on soil, too!

    As your Philodendron Giganteum appears to be thriving, those droplets are most likely glucose sap - a natural secretion that occurs when plants are growing in optimal conditions. This is actually a positive sign indicating that your plant is healthy and happy.

    Another major difference, is that the flower from your Mom's is much more dramatic/striking, whereas the flowers of yours are more like a common aphyllum in terms of shape and color.

      I have both. S. anthonyanus tends to only flower, for me, after I've cut the branch tips off in the spring. D. anguliger tends to bloom on its own, for me, without any branch tipping. I fertilize the anthonyanus with a high phos. fertilizer in spring, and high phos. fertilizer for anguliger in the fall.

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great tips! My mom's still hasn't flowered, so I'll pass that along to her. My anguliger continues to throw out a bunch of blooms at the most random times. I'm going to do a video soon on my epiphyllum oxypetalum since I got some good bloom footage of that one in, and I'll probably include some of the anguliger bloom footage I got too.

      That'd be great! My E. oxypetalum are just monsters. Lol I have all of my aforementioned , along with E. chrysocardium, and some hybrid Epis growing outside, year around (USDA 10a), even down into the high 20s, with little to no harm. Grow More puts out a good high Phos cacti fertilizer, but I also use a 3-12-12 with humic acid (flower n bloom/Grow Power). It took me years to figure out how to make my anthonyanus bloom. Now, I'm working on getting my chrysocardium to bloom. Next, I need to get a pumilum; just haven't found the right price yet. lol I look forward to seeing your next vid :)

    I have a Brazil plant and she’s been doing very well since I got her in September. I think she’s still pretty young, only seven leaves and not too big either. But I’m concerned about a few things: 1) she has a few spots/holes on a couple of her leaves and I’m not sure why. She just got some on her most recent leaf and I think it might be from the sun exposure. 2) One leaf has a brown spot on the edge and is curling. 3) I’ve noticed a few leaves have been curling lately. I water her every 7-10 days and I read that they’re native to warm/humid environments so I take her into the shower with me every now and then. I’m in college in Nashville but I’m from Chicago and plan to take her back home and I’m worried she won’t do as well. Do you have any tips on how I can take better care of her?

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! I'm also from an area where it gets pretty cold in the winter, but I find the the tropicals do okay indoors-they just slow their growth or go dormant when the days get shorter, the air gets drier, and the temperatures in our house are around 68 degrees. It's possible the spots could be from sun exposure if it is getting too much direct light. You can try moving it a bit away from the window it's in. But the brown spots and curling make me think it may need more water. I suggest checking the soil moisture before watering, I like to let at least half of the soil dry before I water again. I usually just stick my finger down into the pot to get an idea of the moisture. Some of my philos in medium light conditions need watered much less frequently than the ones in higher light conditions. Good luck!!

    Can you let me know what yellow leaves mean?

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It really depends, has the soil been consistently wet or dry? If wet, them it's likely due to overwatering, which prevents the flow of oxygen to the plant's roots. If dry, it's probably underwatering and needs a good drink :)

      This is perennial lavender (where I live in zone 7), so I'll plant them in the ground when they are rooted. Fall is a great time to plant perennials! • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Sandy, thanks! I would say maybe you'd have success growing this plant or a monstera deliciosa, but a single plant (many plants have multiple "plants" in one pot). You could keep it prunes from the bottom and train the stem up a pole to keep things more compact. It would probably be easier to start with a small or medium-sized plant and train it as it goes.

I don't d'are to repot it in my special hoya mix.. for same reason.What would you do?

      Hi! Thank you so much! :) Don't be worried about the peduncle, it's pretty hardy! The flowers will eventually fall off, but the peduncle will remain. If you're heading into winter where you are, I would probably wait until early spring to repot. But hosing the plant off is fine!

    I'd be curious to find someone who has owned this for a number of years. It's a nice design but they go out of their way to avoid mentioning what it is made of which should be the most important feature. When asked they will say "Chinese Cedar" which isn't related to Western red cedar, and is actually a fir for which you can expect limited lifespan outdoors. Might be best to buy this and and cover it with real cedar.

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG หลายเดือนก่อน

      I saw the discussion you posted in the FB group about this before buying mine. In your post comments, someone stated they compared the Chinese cedar with domestic cedar and reported the cedar used by BYD was more dense than domestic and a better product for lasting longer. And that the Chinese cedar is frequently used in construction in Asia due to its durability. It smells 100% like cedar inside my greenhouse, and I'm planning to seal the outside yearly regardless of the material to help prolong its life. But since it's a new product, all of us early adopters are all kind of guinea pigs!!😂

    A year ago you had video about asters, i had volunteer asters. Do the blooms have seeds? Ty

    • @ByBrittanyG

      They do! Just wait until the flowers have died and dried completely. You can crumble them into a plastic bag and then go through to pick out the seeds.

    Funny how you think you’re expert but haven’t had it very long or ever repotted it. Seems to be the same with other TH-camrs growing the same plant.

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG หลายเดือนก่อน

      It took us about a week working on it part-time, though two of those days my husband worked on it for about 5 hours straight. Staining and organizing all of the pieces by step in advance definitely saved some time when we started bringing them outside!

    Great project! I need to make something like this myself! The simplest way to cut that hole would probably have been a holesaw drill bit rather than manually trying to cut around it... You would have had a perfect little circle, and they're pretty cheap to buy.

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG หลายเดือนก่อน

      But that would mean I would have had to be patient enough to wait to buy the holesaw drill bit LOL. Patience is not my strong suit :)

      I know it's hard but...pruning! I trim my plant all the time. When you cut the stems, new growth will sprout kind of at an angle. Over time, this creates a really full look

    Would be nice to know what kind of "plastic bag" you store them in? Will a ziplock bag do or do they need air?

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can put them in a ziplock! Just make sure they are totally dry first. I sometimes let mine sit on paper towels for several days just to make sure. I have a few piles going right now :)

    I bought a compacta last April or May (It's now Sept 2024) Boy, is she a s l o w grower! I have go my mom's Hoya Carnosa almost one year ago. The plant is about 60 years old, and as far as I know, she has only bloomed twice. I assume that mom was snipping the peduncle off after the blooms were done! I have it in a west window with bright filtered light. She is growing well, but so far, no peduncles.....
