Jerry Goldsmith's score is superb.
This is phenomenal. I had the chance to see Jerry perform this at the Royal Albert hall years ago and it was stunning. In fact it was performed twice. There is something about this piece that is a timeless forgotten classic.
I remember this concert, one of my best experience in life!
I love the Supergirl movie. It's from my childhood and I think it's the perfect theme song for her.
Goldsmith would of loved that performance for sure. The conductor showed real spirit with the orchestra. This has to be the best interpertation i've seen so far. Just a shame Goldsmith wasn't there to see this orchestra perform this piece. Great stuff. RIP Jerry. You were one of the best and never forgotten.
Too bad Jerry Goldsmith didn't have time to score Superman when he asked, had he the time he would have most likely written something different from John Williams, it seemed like in the 80s Jerry was getting asked to score films that John Williams didn't want to, Williams was asked to write the score to Supergirl too but he was too busy with ET and told the producers to hire Goldsmith, same thing happened with Poltergeist, Steven Spielberg tapped Jerry on the shoulder to write the music after Williams was unavailable.

Is this the orchestra who played the original? Because if not, they absolutely NAILED it!!! A superb performance worthy of Mr Goldsmith himself, he would've been proud :) Well done!!!
No. The original orchestra Jerry Goldsmith recorded the Supergirl score with was National Philharmonic Orchestra in the UK. Jerry Goldsmith used them quite frequently to record some of his best scores like The Omen series. Unfortunately the NPO dis-banded in mid 00's. It was made up of some of the best musicians from other orchestra's in the UK.
Not quite this is a modified version (just check the soundtrack), but the parts you recognized to be accurate are basically tabs (created out of Goldsmith's score) that they use and obviously know how to execute.

Great movie score, this is what is missing from present day movies, a orchestral theme song, I always say the music makes the movie better.

I'm a huge fan of this film even though it was pretty poor storyline it was my childhood in a nutshell. This performance is so good it has left me in tears. Thank you so much! This score really deserves more recognition and was the perfect fit for the character of Supergirl just as Williams was the perfect fit for Superman.
Agreed, I guarantee you that the producers were shoving John Williams material at Jerry saying "make it sound like this" but he managed to compose a theme that really can stand on its own without being a copy of Williams.
This performance sent me back to my childhood with freakin goosebumps!!! When ypu close your eyes as you listen to this...it feels like youre flying with supergirl !!!

im not ashamed to say that this brought tears to my eyes. I have never heard such an amazing performance and seen such passionate conducting for a Jerry Goldsmith work. That so much professional attention and care and excitement went into this performance was overwhelming to me! BRAVO INDEED!

Great performance there and SUPERGIRL(1984) was a very underrated movie.
Wonderful performance. So refreshing to hear the whooshes be kept in the piece - I quite like them, and they give it a distinctive lilt!

this is the best ever live version of the 1984 movie theme performed... it was as if I was listening to its soundtrack... love the trumpets... they were really well done because almost all its notes were in their rightful places... AWESOME !!! you all should do more movie themes please...

Fun fact: Jerry Goldsmith was set to be the original composer for SUPERMAN. Sadly, he was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts as the film kept getting delayed, and we ended up with John Williams in the end. Had things been different, this might have been Superman's theme song instead.
Part of me would like to see this used for the new SUPERGIRL TV show coming up. Even though the series will be brand new in nearly every respect, it would be nice to have this song carry over as a little tribute to the past.

+Reid Mason I agree with you. It would have been nice. When I think of Supergirl I think of Goldsmith. When I think of Superman I think of Williams and Walker. Of course for Batman, I go right to Elfman, then Walker, then Zimmer and Newton Howard. I do enjoy Hefti and Riddle as well. :)

The middle part is so romantic, delicate, feminine and strong at the same time. It really captured Kara/Supergirl.

Funny thing is that this would have most likely have been Superman's Theme if Goldsmith was not committed to another contract(which in turn Donner got Williams)when Donner asked him to score "Superman" since their collaboration for "The Omen" was so successful. Directors like to work with composers that they have a good relationship with Burton/Elfman and Spielberg/Williams to name a few. That being said, I love the score to "Supergirl". A huge fan of Goldsmith, have MANY of his compositions in my vast film music library.

Supergirl was such an underrated movie
Marc McClure, who portrayed Jimmy Olsen in the Superman movies on the big screen starring Christpher Reeve, was the only one from there to appear in Supergirl-The Movie. But it would've been superb to see her in Superman 4; The Quest for Peace and maybe also the actress who portrayed Lucy Lane as well.

Great score and a great performance. Really do have to wonder if this would have been the score for Superman had Goldsmith stayed on.
As for Supergirl, I think the movie itself is fun enough. Yea, it's silly and cheesy, but Helen Slater is good in the role, score is good obviously, and the flying effects are fantastic. Really, some of the best even when compared next to some of effects in the Reeve films.

Not only would Jerry Goldsmith have liked this concert of the Supergirl Main Theme, but so would the creators of Superman, Jerry Seigel & Joe Schuster as well.
Supergirl was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, not by Seigel and Schuster who had no involvement with the character whatsoever.
@@jandreidrn I didn't say the men who created Superman also created Supergirl. I thought that they would've liked the Supergirl main theme heard in a concert.

It would've been superb if the theme from Supergirl-The Movie had been heard in at least 1 episode of Supergirl-The Series just as the theme from Superman-The Movie was heard once or twice in the TV-Series Smallville.
It would've been superb if the theme from Supergirl-The Movie was heard in the Supergirl TV-Series just as the theme from Superman-The Movie was heard in the conclusion of the series finale of Smallville.
The second "Flying ballet" theme is beautiful as are Marion's theme in "Indiana Jones" and Leia's theme in "Star Wars".
Don't forget Ilia's theme in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".

After watching this film I needed to mentally block it out of my mind, it was almost as painful as Superman 4. But Jerry Goldsmith is a great composer no matter what project he works on.

It's in my opinion a catchy tune, however I think the movie for it needed work. Don't get me wrong Helen Slater was a good Supergirl, but the film was lacking greatly.

NOT even Jerry's score could save SuperSUCK! I mean Superhurl!
The score was good, and the movie itself is nowhere near as bad as some people like to say it is. Frankly it was more entertaining than Superman IV, and Slater was excellent in the role of Kara. The one thing about the film that I didn't like was Faye Dunaways over the top acting. That got old quick, and I think she forgot this was Supergirl and not a continuation of Mommie Dearest.

+alucard624 I agree with you. I found Supergirl to be a good film. I liked Slater(thought it was funny that she was in a Seinfeld episode, I am sure Jerry was excited about that, being a HUGE Super man fan)as Kara. Superman IV was rough. But you are spot on with Dunaway.
