Supergirl is just an underrated gem. It even shows the gentleness of a superhero not seen in anything these days. There's a scene where Kara lovingly says good morning to a bunny. It's so feel-good, and moments like that feel genuine and real.
That “air ballet” scene where she’s jumping off the rocks and flying past the trees was AMAZINGLY well done for its time! 🤩😍 There was zero CGI used back then, and there were actual wires holding her up in place, but you couldn’t even see them! 😃 It looked so damn REAL, and they did such a great job with that whole sequence! 👍👍👏👏
Helen Slater gives it her all, great supporting actors - unfortunately the screenplay is rushed and the plot is almost none existent. I don't hate it, but it's a bit of a missed opportunity. Still though, was a very pleasant watch back then. And that score bangs to this day - but then Jerry was very good at lifting a somewhat mediocre movie with a memorable score. :)
I tend to agree with you. But personally, I'd have introduced Helen Slater's Supergirl as the storyline in a Christopher Reeve Superman movie. Partially because I think they would have had an amazing on screen presence together.
Very true. But when I firat saw the movie when I was young I actually enjoyed it... She diaguised with a dark brown hair into a blond Supergirl was the perfect disguised..😅
I agree. Jerry Goldsmith was the best composer/conductor after John Williams. To me Jerry Goldsmith will forever be the John Williams of Trek movie music
Though "Supergirl" did not have the same popularity as the "Superman" films, it did have seasoned-veteran actors. They included Peter O'Toole and Faye Dunaway. It had Jerry Goldsmith's iconic theme. And, of course, the beautiful Helen Slater starred as the super-strength heroine. Glad to see her in several television episodes of the CW's "Supergirl" series! Melissa Benoist, who, herself is gorgeous, can learn and benefit from Slater's experiences.
God bless you for putting this together. This was my favorite movie as a kid. female superhero writers today could take some tips from this movie that a woman can kick ass but also love her man..if he’s worthy…which Ethan was.
Let Me just say THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I Love this Movie and Helen Slater!!! Fell In Love with her at 6 years old and now getting ready to turn 35 in February, She still is MY BEST GIRL OF ALL TIME!!! Nothing But LOVE ❤️❤️❤️
She and Melissa Benoist embody the character well. Laura Vander Voort from Smallville was too angry and aggressive as Kara and lacked the humanity Helen Slater brought and now Melissa Benoist brings
they should had her do a wonder woman movie instead. swop hair color, she is the perfect Diana as well. We could have had an early dc trinity. But she was perfect as supergirl.
At least in the Helen Supergirl, the writers weren't trying to make a lesbian out of her. The Melissa Supergirl was all about women empowerment and lesbianism. Garbage.
Loved this movie when I was a kid, set in the Superman Cinematic Universe long before that was a thing - great actors were cast and I wish they would have made sequels
Yep. The studios originally wanted to use the 80s SG costume which reminded me of a female Rambo. But glad they went with the timeless look of the 60s.
John Williams' Star Wars and Jerry Goldsmith's Star Trek. Williams' Superman and Goldsmith's Supergirl. Next is Williams' Raiders of the Lost Ark and Goldsmith's King Solomon's Mines. Also Williams' Home Alone and Goldsmith's Dennis the Menace.
@@jmack8767 more like Williams' Close Encounters and Goldsmith's Alien. Albeit one is more uplifting while the other is horrifying, both scores also came out the same year Williams did Star Wars and Goldsmith did Star Trek respectively.
I think it's just as good as Superman. I saw this in the movies when I was seven. The 1980s was the best decades for movies. Both movies are similar it's just Superman is New York and this is Chicago.
Excellent soundtrack, Jerry Goldsmith is a genius. Supergirl is very beautiful, and the movie wasn't so good, but decent and I like it. Thanks HD Film Tributes for this beautiful video clip!!!😎💖✌️

I'm a huge fan of the original Superman movies and Supergirl flim and soundtrack. I have to say that just amazing indeed, with all of it's scores, way to go Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams
Sorry 4 folks saying its a terrible film cause I liked it when I was growing up 80's and I like it now. I would like to see supergirl back on the big screen

I would love to see them use this in the series finale tonight in the same way they used Williams' Superman score in the last episode of Smallville. Have Supergiril standing on top of a building with her cape fluttering in the breeze, having this playing in the background with the camera panning out. Would be pretty epic.
John Williams theme to Superman The Movie is STILL today regarded as one of the most majestic, pompous and grandest movie themes EVER composed, but Gerry Goldsmith’s theme to Supergirl is ( in my opinion) just as grand and majestic as William’s theme tune to Superman the Movie. For me…the real genius of this theme is the addition of electronic sequencing sounds heard with this orchestral arrangement. With all the advancements that have been made with electronic instruments and recording production, it is still today very rare to hear an orchestral composed theme like this, with electronic sequenced sound. To hear this beautiful orchestral Jerry Goldsmith arrangement with sequenced electronica sounds over the opening and ending title credits to this film, is ( for me) one of the most beautiful experiences I have EVER had ( or even felt) just by listening to a movie's theme music while watching its film credits. Even the way the titles glides across the screen at the beginning titles and end titles with smoking effects and colour filters, are some of the greatest uses EVER, in the artistry of truly great movie title sequences , that I have EVER come across in a movie film. Jerry Goldsmith’s very fast majestic background string arrangement of this theme, is also one of the most beautiful and majestic strings arrangements in a movie theme I have also EVER come across. His use of using a very fast string arrangement in this theme, is just as very impressive as Bernard Hermann’s string arrangements, in his themes for Psycho and North by Northwest.
I wish we got one. Would've been cool seeing her encounter kryptonite and her antagonist could've been Brainiac and this time maybe Reeve would've said yes if the script had good writing but not the Brainiac idea from Superman 3. He kidnaps Superman and holds him prisoner while powerless under kryptonite and is just about to die when Kara saves him. Kinda like Pryor did in Superman 3 but different
This theme song is just as good as Superman's. I saw this in the movies can't believe that was back when I was 7 I'm in my mid 40s now. Both movies are similar Superman is New York this is Chicago. The '80s ruled.
@@dancastro6873 Agree kinda wish Crisis on Infinite Earths had a moment with both Karas interacting with each other, and Helen’s Kara sacrificing herself to save Melissa’s Kara from the Antimonitor.

I love this my fantasy came true when I was only 10 years old I grew up in the 80s with just superman I love Helen Slater thought she was amazing. Playing Barbie dolls in the wind. Still loves zaltar Peter o, tool 🤗l
Childhood memories and nostalgia kicking in watching this, it was very underrated film. They should have made a sequel, she was perfect for this role as Christopher Reeves was perfect for Superman
One of my top five all time favourite pieces of music probably number two to the 1978 Christopher Reeves' 1978 Superman Theme by the brilliant one and only John Williams.I can't get enough of this video. To me Helen Slater as a kid growing up in the 80's ; she's the best supergirl there is. She is elegant, yet so strong, and moving especially when her friend Louis Lanes' sister has a poster of Superman in her room and Supergirls alter ego looking sweet in her dark haired wig, and uniform, sees a poster of her cousin Superman on the wall. It's a beautiful scene and the films' music enhances it and makes it a very touching scene indeed!🥰My younger sister loved supergirl aa a kid and Farrah Fawsett was the evil but brilliant villian and supergirlss' enemy.I remember having a crush back then on gorgous Ethan.Their kissing scene should have been longer😂There's some brilliant scenes, especially with the late Peter O' Toole, but think the plot scenes could have been better and with a different theme. It's a Shane as somebody mentioned recently, that we never saw Superman and Supergirl as in epic Christopher Reeve and Helen Slater; in a movie together. That could have had load's of potential and I think fans would have loved it!!!
I bet this was a nightmare for JG as they probably said "make it sound like superman" but he did an excellent job. Romantic and larger than life and soaring.
My Favorite DC superhero is Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent / Superman And Helen Slater as Kara Kent / supergirl Music by John Williams theme song Superman
I like this movie . It a fun supergirl . I love the scene when she first lade her eyes on Superman Christopher Reeve . You see that now it will touch your ❤️ heart .
Jerry Goldsmith originally expressed interest in scoring the first Superman movie before John Williams was chosen. I wonder if this theme is what he had in mind for Superman?
Helen Slater was as iconic as reeves, she deserved so much more. They both should have been in a movie together. What an incredibly missed opportunity. Whomever was responsible in green lighting the script should have been shot
That would be the Salkinds (Alexander & his son Ilya) who greenlit the script, and they ended up ruining the movie ... much like they did with Superman 3 the previous year.
Now that DC is exploring the multiverse on the big screen, it would be cool to see Helen Slater come back and play Kara again. Even if it's just a cameo, it would still be awesome.
As bad as the Supergirl movie was and all due respect to the lovely Helen Slater who had to work with a pretty poor script and story, there was no denying that Jerry Goldsmith's score was absolutely fantastic and was equally as epic as John William's Superman theme.
The list of things wrong with the 1984 Supergirl movie is very, very, very, very, very long. However, Jerry Goldsmith's score and Helen Slater's performance do not appear on that list.
If Supergirl had been released five years earlier it would have been a hit. But like today, superhero movies kinda got old and it was too fantastic. The irony is it is a great fantasy film!
I didn't know about this movie and learned this OST was composed by Jeery Goldsmith?! WOW~! Gotta watch comparing with John Williams' Superman theme~~:)
A very underrated film. Back then, the fans wanted more Superman not Supergirl. Just a sign of the times. Yet this film really stood the test of time as being one of the most popular superhero films of the 80s and still today. Helen Slater was the perfect choice for that role. The story was not the best but the whole point of the movie was to bring something different to 80s audiences, and I think they we all got that.

THE Supergirl. MY for ever Supergirl
OMG yes I was so in love in the first Supergirl !!
