Gbatemp has a cfw for the atgames genesis that fixes the sound by replacing the emulators. You can even run retroarch, I don't think anyone has done an in depth review of the custom firmware (cfw)
I noticed screen tearing on the SG model 2 bottom left corner of screen but not on the Mega retron HD. I am sold to get one for 45bucks but look at the sonic the hedgehog again and you will see what I mean
Colors are dark and edges slightly blurred on the HDMI output from the Mega Retron HD cause the signal output from the TCT chip (the GoC chip used Inside the console) is composite analog (to feed the RCA connectors at the back of the console) and converted to HDMI using an el cheapo A/D 720p converter, hence the obvious lack of razor sharp output and darker colors. Quality would have been much better if they had used the native RGB signal and passed it straight over hdmi instead of going through multiple conversions of a composite signal. Just my 2 cents anyway… :=)
Genesis clones with HDMI actually DO use RGB, and I wouldn't doubt this one does too. That said, the color range of the HDMI output can cause certain TVs and capture devices to clip the signal as they generally output in full color range, but most devices either incorrectly set the color range to limited, have no auto-detection and require you to manually adjust the color range or clip the signal to limited range no matter what. That is a possible explanation as to why the colors are darkened. The blurred edges are the scaler's fault as I've seen this happen on other GOAC-based HDMI Geneclones as well just like the GT208 scaler used on them. It doesn't look to use any nearest-neighbor + bilinear/bicubic scaling and instead goes straight bilinear/bicubic. Regarding composite, keep in mind that those TCT-6801/6803/etc. GOACs have no native composite output and instead rely on S-video from the chipset being mixed down into composite externally. To date, HDMI Geneclones use the TCT-6803 and completely ignore the S-video output from the chipset to the point where the components used for the S-video to composite downmix are not installed onto the PCB. Having said that, I'd like to see what the Mega RetroN HD has going on inside. I'm expecting a TCT-6803 set up in the exact manner I described, but I'd be the first to admit I'm wrong if I see something else.

I'm impressed. $45, works with flashcarts, and has better audio than most SoCs. Is the audio perfect? No. And the slightly softened visuals are a minus. But these downgrades are not as severe as in past devices. When you factor in the price point, this is a no brainer for anyone that hasn't budgeted $150-$500 for a spot on modern retro setup.
First clone in a long time that I'm interested in. Master System is not a deal. Stereo audio, decent bass/treble balance, HDMI, and Everdrive support is all I could ever ask for...at least until the Mega Sg ships
I agree with the branding... When I had the Hyperkins Retron HD and Supa Retron HD I did have a hard time figuring out which HDMI cord went to the system. I passed it along to someone else and wanted to make sure they got everything thing that came in the box!
OK so I bought one. For a clone, it's very good. Works with my Everdrive X5. One thing that's slightly disappointing is that games that use 256x224 have a weird shimmer to them. You can see it in Street Fighter a little bit, but it's way more obvious on E. Honda's stage, and Shining Force it's super obvious in the text that some pixels are 2x as wide as others. You don't exactly have to be looking for it to notice it, and it doesn't make the games unplayable, but it's strange. Fortunately that's a minority of games (only 180 of the Genesis's total 900-ish games use 256x224; the rest use 320x224 and it looks fine). It's that the image is being stretch to fit 320x224 before it's upscaled. Not the end of the world. Streets of Rage 2's audio is a little funky because PSG audio levels are higher than FM channels. You'll hear it in the bass of the bar scene, for instance.
I wanted to get this but for me there is no need... Already spent the $189 in the Mega SG plus $50 for the 8bitdo controllers. I myself wanted a new HDMI console that would be near as good as the original! Hyperkin does a good job with there clone systems, especially the design and I believe it's the best but after awhile I just end up parting with the systems when I need the money!
Good review, but are the shield graphics in Sonic messed up on your tv or do they just show like that on the capture? Is Knuckles in sonic 2 the combined carts or your everdrive? And does virtua racing work? Micro machines?
You selected sonic (europe) for the master system. That's why you needed to switch to the PAL setting because that's a PAL rom. Did you try USA master system roms?
No, the rom he selected said USA, and Europe. It could be a bad rom dump though and the NTSC code is corrupted. Can't say for sure he didn't mention that he tried other Master System games.
The game I selected for the video was just to demonstrate and be an interesting game. Ive tested tons of mastersystem games from different regions and they all do the same thing.
This looks really interesting. Have you tried using the mega EverDrive with Master System games on NTSC using composite? That would work out if it's the GOAC or Scaler?
I got one of these today and I have an Everdrive X7. I'm wondering if they updated this thing? Because I had no such issues with Master System games. They look / run absolutely fine without having to use the region switch.
They aren’t without their flaws, but I live all the hyperkin clone systems. Their designs are so faithful to the original consoles and they are great budget options.
Great review. And great info. I didn't know this came out but ill waiting for my retrotink2 and hd retrovision cables. You said it tho 45 bucks u can't beat that!!!!
good !! What do you think about the sound? the sound was inferior to the original Genesis ?? you could make a comparative video between the original Genesis and this clone!
I was trying to purchase this controller and add the 8bitdo md mod kit make it wireless. However, I wasn't sure if this one has the same inside or not. I own 3 md mod kit so that's why I want to try adding it to a similar controller design. I just wish you would disassemble the controller for people to look at the inside.
Hi, good video. I have a question: how is the grip of the pins?, some consoles have issues with pins grip, are too tight and damage cartridges. Greetings.
Looks like a good product from Hyperkin! They are listening with the Everdrive compatibility. Well done 👍 Though if you are looking at buying one with a Everdrive than, I would spend the extra on a MegaSG. I’m sure the MegaSG will have the ability to load roms 😊
Did i miss the part about if it works with Virtua Racing? So does it work with virtua racing? And is sonic 2 really laggy in real life as it looks to be captured here?
So I got this and it apparently has a huge problem. Some games like street fighter 2 and the shining games output a a slightly lower horizontal resolution. Unfortunately the retron decides to stretch these games which leads to terrible shimmering. I looked into it, and this is a problem with all units.
Not very sure about all the fuss around FPGA, I know more or less what it is, but for me just sound like a fancy hardware emulation, what's exactly the difference with consoles on a chip like this one? I already have a megadrive model 2 and works flawlessly, mega sg it's hard to buy in Europe due to import taxes, but you can find hyperkin products easily thru Amazon Spain for example.
Curious, how did the 480i mode for Sonic 2's head-to-head mode look on that thing in terms of the interlace jittering? Even at 1080p and full-screen, I couldn't really see how it looked.
Did I miss the part where he talked about lag? I wish he'd open it up to see if it's just a system on a chip paired with a cheap Chinese HDMI converter like the SNES version.
The shield flickered in every version I've played. For reasons tied to frame rate of the display, or captured footage, the shield doesn't always display as a flicker, sometimes it displays as just an empty circle, or a filled circle. However Any licensed Genesis, and every CRT (as far as I'm aware of) will display it as a flicker.
So awesome! Now just wondering if works with Virtua Racing, Game Genie, Gargoyles, and it it works with the Genesis shadow layer properly used in games like Beyond Oasis and Mega Man Wily Wars on the saving screens. Most clones can't do the shadow layer and you can't see where you're saving or if the game did even though it did. Thanks Madlittlepixel for the awesome review!
Hello from France ! Great Video ! I'm a huge fan of MD and I'm interest about this new MD emulation console because it have a cartridge port and that's great ! Have do you try ThunderForce IV on it ? I play today on Raspberry pi2 with Recalbox but TF4 doesn't run very well on it, the game crash ... AfterBurner II on same device lost his iconics voices sounds too ... Do you see this problems with this Hyperkin console ? With real cartridge or rom via Everdrive ? Hope you the best.
I'm looking at a Mega Drive for my daughter's room and actually there's not much price difference between this and just buying an actual Mega Drive. Difference is this is probably more convenient for her.
This thing is great for the price. It’s really not far off from the original type 2 running it through additional expensive hardware. It’s mailed above the crap that comes out of AT Games products. Sign me up!
Is it running on clone hardware or an Android device with emulation? I'd prefer the former to the latter, frankly. Also, you mentioned Hyperkin was known for "cut corners." I thought cutting corners was AtGames' thing...
Not so cheap here in the UK! We are on lockdown and this is £69.99 on Amazon. But I can get a Super retro Trio Plus for £72.00!!! But that is the Pal version arrghhhh. Thanks for the video.
To me I cant typically compare consoles to emulating games. But sure with the Pi I believe the games will look better and you have a ton of options. This Mega Retron isn't really for those who just want to emulate, Id reccomend this product to someone who has some carts and wants a cheap alternative to continue playing them. If you have no carts or don't care about that kind of stuff, RetroPie all day.
@@Madlittlepixel Kool, thanks. In that case, I'll wait for analogues console. I love my pi but I want a console thats as close to the original genesis as possible.
Thank you for the great review. I think you are the first person to review this on TH-cam. Was wondering if you had a chance to test the Sonic lock on technology on this clone? Thanks!
I really want to like this. Got burned on the Retron 5 - hardware failure after I popped a pin from the Genesis cartridge slot, less than a week into owning the system. However, HDMI Genesis looked fantastic on it while it DID work. I hope this is more of the same deal, but with those hardware issues fixed.
If they provide a fix for the Master System playability through the Everdrive or if Krikkz and company do (not sure how much of a priority or focus it'd be for them, it's not really their fault that this system drops the ball and I'm not sure if Krikkz could make a Mega Everdrive x9 Hyperkin edition case market for fixing something that Hyperkin dropped the ball on) I'd likely really consider this. The quality looks good enough for the $. That said, I was stoked when I saw Everdrive compatibility only to be extremely bummed when Master System compatibility became a subpar experience. That's a big deal breaker for me even with a $45 system. SMS was definitely one of my favorite systems with a great library of content that combined with the Genesis would've been a big sale for me. It should've been a pretty high priority for Hyperkin to deliver on this IMHO. They could've made them and Krikkz bank. 😁 I'd bought one. Then again, maybe Retron 5 Mk II edition? Test it with all Everdrives (especially NES) and I'm all in. 😎🤘🏼 As far as Analogue... It's a bit pricey for my blood. If I'm dropping $200 it'll probably be on a Colectorvision Phoenix not a Genesis FPGA system. At least unless I score one used at a depreciated value. I can suffer with my Genesis on composite more than I could justify big $ for ancient Coleco hardware through RF with an extensive array of expensive mods. That alone makes things like the Phoenix and Amico screaming values while the Mega SG is super expensive with less returns vs. classic (but newer) hardware. The quality will definitely be there but... I just justify it different even as a Sega fan. I'm still glad it's being built for those that'll drop coin though.

It has a power brick! HALLELUIA!!!
Nice video man! Looks like its having the same problem all the clones have with scaling the games that run in the 256x224 resolution.
I'm looking at a Mega Drive for my daughter's room and actually there's not much price difference between this and just buying an actual Mega Drive. Difference is this is probably more convenient for her.
In the final audio comparison, they were both silent.
You didn’t show the audio for the comparison.
What a great review
This thing is great for the price. It’s really not far off from the original type 2 running it through additional expensive hardware. It’s mailed above the crap that comes out of AT Games products. Sign me up!
Is it running on clone hardware or an Android device with emulation? I'd prefer the former to the latter, frankly.
Also, you mentioned Hyperkin was known for "cut corners." I thought cutting corners was AtGames' thing...
Looks cool...maybe the colors are darker than i remember but looks better like this i think
I only do FPGAs now, but for only $45 this thing is nice for casuals or people on a budget.
I uploaded the same games on mister if you want to compare them. I think so sounds are missing but it visually looks good.
Cool! Would it be ok to use your footage in a comparison and credit you?
@@Madlittlepixel yeah thats fine
@@Madlittlepixel Im uploading a new street fighter II video, it got some audio fixes. I didnt get any better at game though lol. I almost beat him.
Not so cheap here in the UK! We are on lockdown and this is £69.99 on Amazon. But I can get a Super retro Trio Plus for £72.00!!! But that is the Pal version arrghhhh. Thanks for the video.
Just out of curiosity, how do you think this compares to running genesis/megadrive on a raspberry pi?
To me I cant typically compare consoles to emulating games. But sure with the Pi I believe the games will look better and you have a ton of options. This Mega Retron isn't really for those who just want to emulate, Id reccomend this product to someone who has some carts and wants a cheap alternative to continue playing them. If you have no carts or don't care about that kind of stuff, RetroPie all day.
@@Madlittlepixel Kool, thanks. In that case, I'll wait for analogues console. I love my pi but I want a console thats as close to the original genesis as possible.
Can any one help please I just got mine and all I get is a blank pink screen.????
have u tried playing xmen yet....before i buy it i wanna know if u can reset the danger room computer after beating mojo
When is this available in the UK??
Stereo or dual monk or mono? Hardware or emulator?
Oh man, if it had a port to play Roms out of an SD card it would have been PERFECT.
DeVstatrOmga that's what an everdrive is basically. And this is compatible with that as he showed
Man this looks promising but what did i expect its hyperkin edit: never mind im definitely buying one
I have a question since this is a hyperkin mega drive system will the retron 3 in 1 work with this just it does with the retron5?
The power converter does work with the hyperkin sega genesis and works well
Are you talking about the original master system power base converter or the 3 in one that hyperkin makes? Thank you
will this play Virtua Racing?
That's what I want to know. I've yet to see a clone that does.
Yes it does
Does it work with sega cd?
Wait I'm sorry if I missed something but can you add your own roms ????
This only takes cartridges so you'll need a everdrive if you want to play "roms". He's using Krizz's Mega Everdrive flashcart in the video.
@@sonikku1011 thanks
As far as Analogue...
