As an Irishman I must say I'm as the Aussie's would say 'SUPER STOKED " 😂 with this appointment. I'm a big Joe fan nothing but love for him and what he did for Irish rugby. As for the wallabies it's been sad to see their decline but all teams for through a bad patch and bounce back and no better man than Joe to revive them! The Lions 🦁 tour is now looking very promising and competitive. Good luck to Joe and the wallabies.🏉👍

And you have to be Australian to understand that… we set up our teams differently… besides he came across non committed with that comment at the beginning about 18 months and then he’d be quiet happy to pass it on plus joe has very important commitments at home which became an issue at the end of his time with Ireland

I think they'd do well to cut at least 1 super rugby team and condense existing talent into more competitive squads.
It will only marginally help but every bit counts.
Under 20's talents like Jorgensen should be prioritised to represent under 20's instead of the national side. Imagine an under 20's player who has both super rugby and world cup squad experience and imagine how that calibre of player would inspire the other under 20's guys to match him.
Australia's streamlined 4 franchises should also be required to cap 3 u20 prospects each year so that the u20's national squad has a dozen guys with super rugby experience.
Success in under 20's translates to the winning mindset we've seen with NZ, France, Ireland and South African players.

I really hope Joe does a good job with Australia because as an Irish fan I really feel sorry for Australia going from one of the teams in world from 90s and early 00s to not getting out of the pools 25 years later. Even in RWC 2015 they reached final. 8 years they have gone down hill significantly. The past while they have lost to tier 2 teams. I'm sorry Australia but at the moment I count Australia as tier 2 team. If Joe can improve Australia significantly like he did for Ireland beating all blacks for 1 time ever in 2016 and winning grand slam in 2018 Australia will do well if Joe does hard work for Australia like he did for Ireland. But I really think for Australia's own good I think Joe should get a lot of the really good players playing in the northern hemisphere in Japan, France and England. And he should also try and get players like Quade Cooper and Michael Hooper back into the squad too.

There needs to be a discussion about the overall rugby situation in Australia. Things like why the decline needs to be discussed. AFL/NRL popularity vs Rugby union popularity needs to be discussed. Because Australia is not going to be a successful team again if it does not get support from it's own people. During the last world cup I did not see one Australian rugby union supporter, not few, I did not see one, and me coming from South Africa being used to things like bok Friday, I found it quite weird, but mostly sad. A look at grass roots needs to be done. What rugby is offered at the schools, is it union or league? Just ask the question first, why the decline.
Without a good strategy from the bottom all the way up, these "interim coaches" are just going to fail over and over again. Nobody is going to fix a building with it's foundations are shattered.

I’m an All Blacks fan living in Australia (even though I support the Waratah’s).
I think it’s great to see Joe take on the Wallabies Coaching role. Would also be good if David Nucifora was an assistant coach, and maybe groom Stephen Larkam as a future coach for Australia.
I think RA are heading in the right direction and will regain that never-die attitude again.
I also believe Australia plays its best rugby by applying constant sustainable pressure, waiting very patiently to strike. I can say with respect it was amazing to observe but frustrating when they beat us.

Jo will be good. He was a big reason Ireland became the force they have. He's definitely helped the Alblacks improve under fozzies reign. Jo brings discipline and a sound structure and consistency of selection and a sound game plan where he focuses a lot on ball retention skills, catch, pass etc That's what the Wallabies need.

IMO, the Wallabies were on the right track with Dave Rennie. This will likely put them back on that track. Nice time to take over the team as they've underperformed recently and Joe Smit will look like a magician.

absolute dribble. Rennie had a 31% win record and that was dropping by the week.

And Sir Alex Feguson was one loss away from being sacked at the start of his Man Utd tenure. If you're stat driven Eddie Jones is probably still your guy.

As a South African- really need to get Australian rugby back to the heydays, essential for the game’s future - if the Lions tour is one sided it will be very damaging for the game. Message to Australia- you have quality management and coaches - it’s now on the players at every level, their families, the public and media to now pitch up and pitch in - rugby is a lifestyle and culture, immerse yourselves and bring your legendary competitiveness

What Australian Rugby needs is a serious discussion on what is *Wallaby Rugby.* To my mind it has been a huge distraction that could only be applied to that great period when a truly extraordinary group of players came together, a once in a century alignment of the stars; and not some ideal state that reflects poorly on current players, coaches, support staff, management and we fans. As Robbie Deans used to say, _play what's in front of you_ and add _knowing fully what's behind you._ I.e. ruck speed is Rugby gold, always play straight, take what you're given and work like you've never worked in your life. Have a lot of fun Joe and Welcome.

This is exactly what AU needs, not just Joe but Nucifora and Horne too. Great personnel in place to kick start the Wallabies resurgence. 2 years is the right length as well, nice crescendo with the Lions tour then let another coach drive it on to the WC in 4 years. As someone who'll be supporting the Lions it makes that series a whole lot more exciting, mentor meets student once again. Farrell owes him one 🙂
