    I appreciate you guys talking about Bobby's Chevamoco. I happen to be one of the guys who helped restore the car and own it. It's a wild car.

    Great job guys!!!!! You guys especially Steve are true purist to this era of drag racing such as I which, is why I don't attend so-called nostalgia events anymore....keep this shit going and let's get the purity, showmanship and respect to keeping it true to the era back and make it the main focus and put speed and performance on the back burner.....now on to part three

    Those were the cars that got me interested in drag racing at around age 10. Friends were buying comic books and I was buying HOT ROD and CAR CRAFT. We all read MAD, and the occasional Playboy furtively made the rounds. Barbi Benton. R-rrr! Then Jungle Pam came around and everyone’s mind was blown. The best part was Arrington, Lieberman, Graeber, Grumpy, K&G were all local to us.

    I’m 73….we had a ball at the strip watching these match bashers run at Detroit Dragway and Motor City Dragway. My brother ran a ‘32 Bantam coupe in the c/altered class , he built a ‘39 Pontiac c/gasser. Good times , we saw the Little Red Wagon run when it was unlettered and was trying to run good laps but the thing wouldn’t NOT pull giant wheelies. A few months later it came back all lettered up and wheelied for show. I remember Jay Howell ran fuel burning Ford Bronco that was just insane. Everyone came through town , we saw ‘‘em all. Logger, Marsh, stuffy and Rupp ran a injected small block Chevy on nitro that would run with the AA/F guys til they got a handle on the clutches. Some times I think it couldn’t be real,but it was easily the absolute best time to race and spectate. Sadly those times will never return.

    Up here in my neck of the woods at Kil Kare Dragway in Xenia, there was a Gasser event advertised running with 1967 rules.

    The problem with running a Chevy in a nitro class is the servicing issue. Because they have stud mounted rockers they need to be adjusted with between round service. The shaft mounted hemi rockers just get slapped back on top of the head. with a 392, 10 nuts per head, including rockers and head studs, no adjustment necessary. with a rat motor you have 8 rocker nuts, which need adjusting, and 16 head studs. That's a whole lot more work to do between rounds.

    Cool vids. How popular was drag racing compared to Nascar back then?

    • @AmericanHotRodAssociation
      @AmericanHotRodAssociation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s ironic that you would ask… Drag Racing was so popular at that time, NASCAR jumped in with both feet and became another sanctioning body and ran Drag Races. That’s where the U/FX class name came from in the early years of Match Racing.

    Prior to the world going insane, I was in the middle of some pretty heavy conversation on Facebook about the subject matter of correct appearing altered wheelbase match racing. There's a good 10 or so cars in the midwest that fit the bill for this right now. As soon as a group of these beasts hit the track, the numbers would probably double fairly quickly. Just like in 1965. Let's hope that things get back to normal sooner rather than later and maybe we will see it soon.

    • @AmericanHotRodAssociation
      @AmericanHotRodAssociation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert we would love to make this happen, the cars and participation is what would make it really happen. We cannot afford to make a class and no one participate.

    • @roberthill2219
      @roberthill2219 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmericanHotRodAssociation I would love to see it happen. Try contacting Steve DeTar, son of Ted, on Facebook. He's pretty tapped in with a bunch of these guys. I've spoken to several of these dudes on FB when my Drag Racing Page was still active and prior to that when I was a moderator on 60s 70s drag racing photos, my old group is still there, but it is now dormant. Robert Hill's Drag Racing Page,rip. There was some pretty heavy discussion going on and even some videos posted of a couple of these cars in action... Tell Tony to pick up the phone when he sees a number ending in 8303.

      Quain Stott has been messing around with the idea of an fx class for a while now and it would probably be a pretty good idea to work on contacting the cousins Platt. They both have cars that fit the bill of what you're looking for.

    • @AmericanHotRodAssociation
      @AmericanHotRodAssociation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quain has already added an FX class and the Platt boys are involved.

    Check out the Southeast coast gasser series they run sort of the -67 rulebook , imagine that with funnys and dragster (with just better saftey hoops etc but with some kind of 60 s rules and hard limits on fuelpumps and ignition, perhaps even only direct drive and no warmup burnouts just like the old days,, and we would love t see that show again , modern dragracing is simply put not fun anymore its gotten way to serious ,, and also i think stuff like the cool paint jobs just like the Gasser series mentioned people are missing these things today, people are sick of sponsor wrapped up milliondollar cars

    How SEGA uses the gasser rules from 67 plus some of their own to keep things under control and SEGA is hard core on the rules and it serves the class well and the racing is very tight and entertaining.
    There’s a bunch up here in western Canada running 70s Funny Cars just search Rocky Mountain nationals funny cars

    • @roberthill2219
      @roberthill2219 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got to experience a handful of the Rocky Mountain funny cars last year at Kearney Raceway Park in Nebraska. Most of the stuff they were running was around 20 years old but still entertaining. But nothing compared to the show that Funny Car Chaos put on about a month later, and the best part was the local guy(what's up, Justin!) who won B class with an honest to God 1976 Monza (body and chassis never separated!) that used to belong to Roger Lindamood with a low buck small block Chevy!
