I didn’t realize how kiwis can be with regard to hugs etc. I am married to a kiwi so I have been fortunate to be adopted as a kiwi and kissed and hugged for quite some time.
Thanks for sharing these stories because it makes me thankful for what I have. I don’t ever want to take it for granted.

Oamaru (where some of my ancestors settled in 1884) is a town - it doesn’t have a cathedral. The population is only about 11K, but those old buildings show how wealthy the South was from agriculture and horticulture. The first shipments of meat from NZ to the UK (starting in 1882) originated from Totara Estate, near Oamaru, and the area exported 100s of thousands of beef carcasses back to the UK.

If you're of maori descent, is it also natural to adopt that 'kiwi' adage. After all, should l assume kiwi is a maori word.
While I don't really care who adopts that adage... as a maori...l once asked my partner of European Irish descent whether or not she considered herself kiwi and (tongue in cheek) should she should be greatful to me for being considered kiwi if she so chooses to consider herself as 'kiwi'.
Yes l am aware that it a term initially was a term used to describe New Zealand servicemen back in the day.

Don't hug people; and don't plant a wet kiss on their cheek. Some people in NZ do this in greeting and it is cringey. It's not welcoming, it's enough to make someone want to run a mile.
