I hope you enjoy this lost footage video series from the not so well known IAT / SIA! My first thru hike in 2016. I was the only person to hike the 725 miles that year, and even today I still don't think it's all that popular, but definitely worth sharing! If I were to offer any advice to someone looking to hike this trail... learn some french, and respect the locals!
Wow! So glad I stumbled upon this...my wife and I when first married spent our yearly summer vacations exploring maritime Canada - Newfoundland, NewBrunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, ...starting out along the Gaspe Peninsula brought back a lot of memories for us...we found the scenery outstanding and often breathtaking...it often felt like we were in a National Geographic special as we traveled and explored the back roads. Looking forward to your next installments.

Trail organizations in Canada are generally much smaller than American ones. Also, far fewer population centres near the trails. But, all worth checking out! Thanks for sharing, eh!!! Happy new year from Ottawa.
I enjoyed following Masochist as he completed the ECT this year. He started in the Keys heading North Bound and did as much of Canada as he could before weather turned on him. Anxious to follow your adventures as you did it in a nonCOVID year. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!

It reminded me of some of the shelters Chica and Sunset saw on the Ice Age age trail. So nice of the trail designers to build and maintain it. Your footage looks amazing for being 5 years old but to be totally honest I would watch anything you create. Thanks for sharing, this looks beautiful. I was planning on doing the Colorado Trail next summer, but this looks very interesting. I hike with my dog, and I am an East Coaster so that means to do the CT I have to drive. I can't trust my best friend with the airline. I like how rugged the trails look and are. Take care
I hiked the Quebec section of the IAT this summer (2021). Many more people this year than when you hiked it, I probably met 100 hikers while I was doing the trail. Compared to some US trails that's not a lot of people but in Quebec that's a busy trail. It hasn't changed that much, except there is now a map available in Farout (Guthook) so that make navigation much easier. The trail quality is very unequal, going from horrendous to super well maintained. I'm not a super fast hiker but I struggled to maintain 10 miles / 15 km per day in the rough sections. One of the thing that is different about this trail is how you go through so many ecosystems in a short distance: from the Gulf of St-Lawrence to the rugged mountains of the Parc de la Gaspésie and the Réserve de Matane and back to the farming country of the Avignon section.
This is wonderful! I have watched your ECT documentary several times as it has helped keep me focused on my goal. I am so happy to know there is more to see of your journey.
So true that more mooses use the trail than humans! I saw one near l'érablière shelter and a section hiker I hiked with saw a few in forillon. We were the first people in over a week to use the trail :) Oh and about the very fun bridges, two of them finally broke this summer after a big storm. I wonder what will replace them!
Just *gorgeous*. Hiked most of NH's Cohos Trail in 2004, and our best/fastest miles were in bushwacking. It looked just like what you traveled, except the (misbegotten) blazes didn't screw with you, once you learned to treat them with a bit of humor. NICE VID.
This was great, could just watch hours of you hiking through there. You make it look easy, with the solitude and everything else, I suspect I wouldn't last long, but I'd love to find out!

This was so much fun to watch. How was it for you looking back into this time capsule of yourself? You seemed so excited about everything, while having all sorts of firsts ("a frickin' metal box so that bears can't get in it... how cool!") so rad to see this footage knowing the incredible things you were about to do in the coming years.
Oh wow it was weird in some ways but really cool in others. I am 30 now, while at the time I was 23 i think. Young and lacking in respect in minor ways, or experience in other ways. Nothing ever big, just with how I spoke was interesting to hear. It was cool though to see how much blind ambition and resolve I had when it came to completing this trail. The more adversity the better, injury, lack of money, not knowing what I was doing. I had known quite a bit and was prepared but at the same time was learning everything as I went and just kind of squeaking my way through.
What a GREAT video! I loved every minute of it--except for that "extra fun" bridge. lol Also, I think maybe you knew all the French you needed: "c'est la vie!" I can't wait for part 2.
I certainly should have learned more french before going! The locals appreciate it very much, and in in some of those small towns at the time no one I could find spoke english so I had some minor troubles with navigating and grocery
@@JupiterHikes As they all learn English in High School it is more likely that they chose not to respond to you in English -- up to them. When in Quebec I find that if you address every stranger in French, even if it is terrible, they will likely repsond in English if they're a reasonable person.

That kind of solitude is rarely possible on the AT in the US these days. People everywhere in most places. I like the idea of experiencing wildness without too many people. I think many would be surprised by how much solitude can be found on the AT during a late season SOBO thru hike. I personally barely saw anyone south of new hampshire, and a friend who just completed the trail this year said in 120 days she didn't see a single other southbounder!

I actually already did the 4,800 mile hike. It turned out to be about 5,000, since I chose to also walk into and out of all my town stops from the trail. (Most would just hitchhike there and back instead) This was in 2016. I don't know how much the filming adds, but not much
I ain't caressing any egos here, but it takes a certain, very specific kind of human to do what you do. Anyone who would criticize you will never accomplish even a fraction of what you have accomplished.

It's been quite a bit more popular since the pandemic actually. Many Canadians that normally go to the US for thru hikes decided to stay and hike local trails. I hiked it in September, and judging by the logbooks and what I heard there were about 30-50 thru hikers of the gaspésie section. Most hike it in July, so when I went in September I only encountered 3 thru hikers, all going the opposite direction.
@@tracygenereux959 nice update, thanks. Our trails here in California are so popular they are restricted by permits and quotas, so it's hard to even get out on them. The IAT sounds dreamy in comparison
@@stuartb9194 it's hard for me to imagine trails that are that crowded. On the IAT I encountered so few people that at some point in the matane wilderness reserve I spent almost 3 days without seeing anybody at all!
@@stuartb9194 also, it was very easy to prepare for the hike. I called the IAT association 2 weeks prior to buy my permit. There are no quotas. I sent them a resupply box (they a have a few drop of points in the woods for hiker's convinience). Took the train there and started hiking :)
You likely learned this en route...when in areas where English is not the primary language, just attempting the language will get you a long way. Especially w/the French. Many French speaking folks don't mind speaking English (rarely poor, typically excellent English) if you are willing to 'embarrass' yourself by displaying your poor French skills, first. Also, the more you hear it and attempt it, the easier it is to understand w/out even really trying. Should be an interesting journey. I've always wanted to visit the starting point up there.
Been wanting to do the ECT awhile now. Fingers crossed they do away with their vaccine mandates for visitors from the US but that would probably take a miracle. Maybe in the next life :)
