I didn't know that I was watching one of my favorite youtube videos of all time. During the last part of the video that shows the end result, I started sobbing at the "bombastic" second chorus. Partly because of the emotions I was feeling at the time, but mostly because I was witnessing so much sheer greatness. Adam, this video and this arrangement of Hello make me very happy to be alive. Thank you for blessing the world with this.
Dear god. Never really been able to "get" jazz despite years of formal training from a teacher with a doctorate in jazz drumming, I had a certain respect for the talent involved but very little appreciation for the end result. This is kinda blowing my mind a little bit as I sit here at almost 5AM recovering from a Friday night out with friends, though, it's *awesome.*
The whole process is so interesting and impressive to me, as a person who has the same musical knowledge as a potato. Is this also interesting and impressive to you people who are in the music world as well?
Interesting, yes, impressive, in a way, yes. It's always fun and fascinating to see what other artists come up with in terms of ideas, I love how Adam puts a lot of thoughts into the music, beyond just the harmony (for example, the key relative to the present instruments is one I don't think about often enough). And impressive in terms of quality, energy, putting everything together + making the video is a lot of work, and even if I don't agree with every choice he made, I still find the overall result very neat and I'm sure, to him, satisfying. :)
Well, I’m of the mind that when you are dealing with leaving an impression, if it doesn’t fit with your preferences then it’s not going to be as impressive. In my opinion, there were portions of this arrangement I would omit to help bring the piece together. The original composition was very bland, in that it only had a certain amount of tones and chords it was offering. Just like making a meal though, if you don’t provide the right mix of variety between your “musical flavours” and simplicity to help keep everything coherent, you’re going to have people who plainly don’t enjoy it. Looking at it from another perspective, a huge part about what makes music enjoyable is anticipation, and using that anticipation to satisfy the audience or continue to raise their interest. If someone is listening to a chord progression, for example, and you subvert their expectations, it can be immensely satisfying. If all you are doing is subverting those expectations, then the audience can sort of burn out and lose interest.

Interesting/10 I’ve never heard of this jazz and I haven’t been playing it for years either... But seriously there aren’t a whole lot of bands that play this pop jazz fusion. Dirty loops, Lucky Chops, and Grace Kelly are the only ones off the top of my head.
i don't understand a word you explained but this feeling of reward at the end, resolving to the standard chords feels great and overall is like having an emotional jurney behind you with so much more depth. It really represents the lyrics great.
When you put raw analytical capability with immense knowledge and practiced musical skills, you get content like this. Simply amazing in so many dimensions.

I don't know what your career goals are, but you are an incredible arranger and composer. I bought a bass partly thanks to your videos this December. Thanks!
Amazing how the new harmony have intensified the “regret” feeling of the song. On the original track I always felt the “regret” aspect but at the end of the song I usually feel “embraced”, probably because the “resolution” the pop intervals give us. For the next Q&A... What are your emotional responses on listening to the same song in different harmonies? Congrats, Adam.
you know, its crazy. I consume these videos for however long they take to play... then a week later I'm like "havent heard from Adam in a while... weird" meanwhile its only been a week... i cant imagine what it takes to stay on top of a predictable youtube output at such a high level of production. you're a master, brother. stay high, even if its less often.
Really loved this breakdown, the way you reharmed it is soooooo tasteful and I also loved how you used the unsettling gliss in the strings and really made use of the ranges of the instruments you had.
Ah thank you! I was wondering what type of sweater he had on the video. Love the style. Decided that " crtl + F " would help me find out if i search "Sweater" Instead of typing a comment. X3
Oh my Christ. I don't know how many times I got goosebumps during this. The chorus hits so hard. I was just buzzing listening to it. And then that ending. Honestly.
Holy effin' shit. I've always been a fan of the idea of music being a marriage between lyrics and the tones being played, but this... This goes to eleven. The music industry as a whole - hell, all of us as beings that experience art - needs more of this.
I've always heard that progression as vi IV I V. Originally I analyzed it in minor, but thought it didn't make sense. Once I realized the first chord didn't have to be a I chord, major made so much more sense. 'Oh, that's why the bIII sounds so stable; it's the I!'
I think it depends on the song in question. For example "Still Loving You" by The Scorpions uses that progression in the chorus, but the rest of the song is so clearly in minor that I don't think it sounds like relative major in that song. But in some other songs, it does sound more like vi IV I V than i (b)VI (b)III (b)VII. In this particular song, I think it sounds more minor than major. The progression lacks strong resolutions which is why it sounds a bit ambiguous and can be interpreted in different ways (and depending on context may sound different).
This is one of my favorite videos you've ever made! I learned so much both visually and through what you say. This is one of the best examples of the roots of reharmonization and the stories one attempts to tell; that's the reason some one would reharm, to enhance the story or tell the story from a different perspective, or even tell a totally different story. Grand Slam! (I used a baseball term and I don't like baseball that's how good this video is)
Me ; Someone who can't read music at all and knows essentially nothing about music theory. Still enjoying your content more than most other creators on youtube. You're fantastic at teaching dude.
i looove this video and the generosity of your sharing the arranging process so often forgotten. Beautiful to see how you relate to the lyrics, the story, and your emotional relationship to the chords and sounds. Reminded me of something I heard Joni Mitchel say in an interview about her no longer looking for chords but for emotional states. Thank you so very much for doing this! praise to everyone involved in this song!

Really glad you've done a studio version of this - I often find myself listening to the live version from a while back. Tremendous arrangement!
This is really a very very good example of how a true musician-music producer should be. Kudos to ADAM.
If only... the time and patience were put into modern music. It could be as awsome as this. Great job.
I cant even describe how amazing this was... Daaaamn
Wow! This is how pop music should be. The harmony is amazing.
Opel Power there’s actually a whole genre for this called jazz
Interesting/10 I’ve never heard of this jazz and I haven’t been playing it for years either...
But seriously there aren’t a whole lot of bands that play this pop jazz fusion. Dirty loops, Lucky Chops, and Grace Kelly are the only ones off the top of my head.
@@Tysoreny What name of subgenre?
How bout trying to turn "Let the bodies hit the floor" into a chrismas-style song.
Why is your profile picture a double parity case? (techniaclly, it can be solvable on 3x3, but you'd have to hide the fixes in the back)
Yoav Shati I mean, why not really?

Let the bodies hit the floor as a classical piece. An aria or string quartet maybe XD
i don't understand a word you explained but this feeling of reward at the end, resolving to the standard chords feels great and overall is like having an emotional jurney behind you with so much more depth. It really represents the lyrics great.
When you put raw analytical capability with immense knowledge and practiced musical skills, you get content like this. Simply amazing in so many dimensions.
"I'm in guh FUCK"
She's so good....
Adele: Hello from the other siiiiii-
Adam: Actually...
This is the coolest making of a music video. Also, singer is killing it, as are all the musicians. Very cool ideas behind the changes.
For me, the first 3 minutes of the song just exist to setup the release into the sax solo.
Worth it.
you know, its crazy.
Damn. There are some gorgeous shots and fantastic editing here. My man Neely really upping his filmmaker game on this one.
*"Hello from the d flat 5"* You're great xD
Also I think that 10Tree sweater is psychoactively improving your video editing abilities, lol.
Ah thank you! I was wondering what type of sweater he had on the video. Love the style. Decided that " crtl + F " would help me find out if i search "Sweater" Instead of typing a comment. X3
this really deserves #1 on trending. thank you Adam for letting me save my money on music school
Oh my Christ. I don't know how many times I got goosebumps during this. The chorus hits so hard. I was just buzzing listening to it. And then that ending. Honestly.
"Music is the space between the notes" 11:14
Gonna say "I'm in Califuck" anytime someone calls me while I'm there.
i live in califuck
Chills. Multiple times. Amazing, powerful arrangement!!
Holy effin' shit. I've always been a fan of the idea of music being a marriage between lyrics and the tones being played, but this... This goes to eleven. The music industry as a whole - hell, all of us as beings that experience art - needs more of this.
that's officialy the longest and the greatest intro on youtube. Thank You
I've always heard that progression as vi IV I V.
That's what the text in the top left of the video says, but yeah, I agree with you on that.
No one:
James Bond: Hello From the DB5
OK, you win
Useless nobody useless meme format
Damn thats a good meme holy shit.
Grand Slam! (I used a baseball term and I don't like baseball that's how good this video is)
So good to see the little pieces of explanation of your storytelling with your arrangements come to life in the end. Nicely put Adam!
Me ; Someone who can't read music at all and knows essentially nothing about music theory. Still enjoying your content more than most other creators on youtube. You're fantastic at teaching dude.
Yessss! More re-harmonization! You should make a killer live cover band called Re-Harmonization... Please
He actually played this song and I think other reharms live with a band he made called (seriously) J A Z Z S C H O O L.

Really pleased you’ve recorded this, I’ve listened to the live Jazzschool version dozens of times, I love it!
i looove this video and the generosity of your sharing the arranging process so often forgotten. Beautiful to see how you relate to the lyrics, the story, and your emotional relationship to the chords and sounds. Reminded me of something I heard Joni Mitchel say in an interview about her no longer looking for chords but for emotional states. Thank you so very much for doing this! praise to everyone involved in this song!
...came fairly musically uneducated to this party about one year ago. It took a lot of studying and practicing to fully understand and enjoy what you've really created Thank you so much for being such an inspiring source over all those years! Happy new Year 2021!
