Honda CB1100 Long Term Owner's Review

  • I have over 11,000 miles on my CB1100 so I thought it would be appropriate to talk about it a little bit. Happy to answer any questions in the comments!
    Update: 8 months later. Odometer: 22,000, no problems yet! I did notice some oil seepage near one corner of the valve cover gasket but I need to check those valves soon anyway which will require a new gasket. Also, I needed to clean the front sprocket which is a little bit of a pain but I noticed gunk dripping down and realized it had accumulated about 20k miles of road grime- it was very satisfying to clean up.
    Update: I crashed it with around 40k miles on the bike, then got a CB1100EX. The bike was awesomely reliable the whole time with just basic maintenance, so I still very much recommend it. I did a chain and sprocket replacement at 26k, brakes and tires every 10-12k or so, and oil every 4k. The '17 doubled most of the service intervals, but I think I'll keep doing oil at 5,000 miles I think. Feel free to ask any questions, I'll do my best to respond.

    Thanks for the review. This type of bike used to be categorized as a UJM, which stood for universal Japanese motorcycle. Almost extinct now, Honda was brave enough to bring one back to the market.

    Spot on with the "old man magnet" analogy. I can't tell you how many old dudes come up and talk to me about my bike and the good ol days with their cb750 stories. It is funny but I don't mind it so much. I love my motorcycle and love talking about it.

    • @johncahill3018
      @johncahill3018 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm an old guy who had a couple CB750's back in the day. Great bikes, lots of stories. That being said my regular ride now is a Triumph Bonneville, and I'm the one who has to listen to the old guys (like me) tell their Bonneville stories. You're more patient than I am though *grin* Nice vid...enjoy that bike!!

    Thanks for the review. I am also a SoCal (San Diego) CB1100DX rider. Only thing I might add is that I think the CB1100DX is a great touring bike. I am 6ft 215lb (all muscle of course). Last Sept 2016 did 5000+ mile ride to Michigan and back with bike loaded with front fork roll bag, tank bag, integrated tail/saddlebags, and 70Liter dry bag on my luggage rack. Smoothest ride I have ever been on. Avg speed was around 75mpg, but was able to cruise at 110mph thru the Texas Panhandle. Love this bike :)

      Yeah it really is so versatile I can't see myself ever actually selling it (although I CAN see myself buying more bikes when I get more room :P)

    I just finished a 3,000+ mile trip from Dallas area to Ruidiso, NM, up to Durango, CO and back and really enjoyed the trip on this bike. I could have cruised all day at 70-75mph with just my small PUIG shield. This bike truly is one of the best do-it-all bikes out today, in my humble opinion. I’m perplexed why this bike did not sell well in the US market.
    My wish list probably mirrors many of those already mentioned in the comment section of this video and the cb1100 forums. I would like a larger tank, ABS, 50lbs lighter, a 26,000 mile valve adjustment interval, and finally shaft drive. The last one is controversial because many don’t mind chain maintenance and coupled with the desire to shed 50lbs might borderline on a bike that is probably impossible to produce.
    Despite my wish list, I love this bike and it really is one that will never leave my garage.

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I think we're all on the same page regarding the wish list. I do want other bikes, but I'll always want this one too. I think the reason it didn't sell well is that it costs too much for what you're getting on paper. They don't talk about it much but you have this bike still made in Japan with really high quality parts, not Thailand with budget items, and while it doesn't add up to something that goes super fast and weighs very little you end up with a bike that reeks of quality all around... Of course you pay for that.

      Kevin Schwartzkopf I took my MSF on a little Suzuki 250 standard bike, and loved the classic looks of it. This thing hadn't been on my radar, but man it's a cool bike. I have a question I have for you CB1100 owners. With it being a heavier bike, does it wear you out quickly?

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ratstrat1984 I don't think so at all. The weight is really only an issue until you get used to it, and even when you're first acclimating to it the only issue is slow speed maneuvers in my opinion.

    Great video, thanks. I'm an older guy now and it's been a few decades since I last rode a bike (Honda). But I still dream about it, lol. So while I'm still healthy and strong enough, I've decided to buy another bike and the CB1100 is the one that's just screaming my name. I've sat on one in the show room and I'm confident I can handle it. But I don't think I should get on anything bigger until I refresh my skills and confidence. (I have other touring type bikes in mind but they're too heavy for my confidence level right now.)
    I live in a place where the highways are in great shape and the scenery is just off the charts. Mountain highways of BC and Alberta. Although I love driving (or riding) slow and taking in the scenery, I still don't feel comfortable unless I have ample power to get away from situations I don't like. My old Honda was the 305 Superhawk and it just didn't have that kind of power. I think this bike can deliver the performance I want for mountain highways.
    I'm glad to hear that the aftermarket is good because I don't think we can get those items as easily in Canada as you can in the US. Not sure about that, I need to check into it more. But there are some items I'd like to put on that bike for touring and to be honest I don't know where to get them. The dealers would know, but I imagine they would only guide me to items "that they know about".
    Thanks again, this vid was really put together nicely.

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For more information check out the cb1100forum.com which is I think a place you'll fit right in. It's mostly older guys who like a comfortable, solid, well-built bike but who aren't necessarily after the fastest on the spec-sheets. I think other than the weight it's such a manageable engine that a total beginner would be able to handle it, you'll definitely be fine! Good luck!

    • @Albertarocks
      @Albertarocks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the info and for the vote of confidence. I'm just so stoked to get this machine ordered but am waiting for the fall (dealers up here get very hungry in the winter). I hear the bike is very solid and stable, silky smooth, well behaved on every level and with plenty of power. My racing days are over and I'm very satisfied to just cruise along and enjoy the scenery. I'll definitely dial into that forum, thanks so much for the tip.

    I have a 2014 with 34,000 on it and it runs like the day I bought it. The wheelbase is 1 inch longer than my 78 KZ 650 c2. No oil burning, no issues and 51 mpg combined. Changed tires a few times, stock tires suck...put Bridgestone BT-45's and a big difference.1 valve adjustment ( cams come out for that), 2 sets of brakes (Easy to do) and easy to clean. Its long legged...120 at redline in 3rd, rev limited in 6th gear to around 110 mph. 2500 rpms at 55. Dont get a 2013 or less, they have a 5 speed tranny. No complaints whatsoever, love the bike!

    Thanks for a nice, simple, friendly review and not forcing every one to listen for 15 minutes to the worst and most obscure band track that could be found!
    Last year I sat on one in the showroom and fell in love - and kept coming back every two weeks just to enjoy the feel of the machine and how perfectly every thing seemed positioned. But I went with another in-line four, the Suzuki Bandit 1250 as it had fairing and a 5 gal tank (200+ mile range).
    The Honda air-cooled in-line four is the best bike music ever! Good job with the various scene segments - adds a lot of visual interest. You should also add a segment of just how the engine & exhaust sounds as the music of the bike is important. Also add photos of how you load up your bike for touring.
    I that brown seat a stock seat? I have a friend at work who is a little shorter than average. How do you think the bike would work for women, or people with shorter than average inseam? (... looking for options for those people other than being stuck on small displacement bikes or defaulting to the V-twin Cruiser style)

    Nice bike, I don't like spokes because they are too hard to keep clean (or I don't know a easy way). If I'm traveling over 200 miles a day I like to have a fairing. I've had mine for just over a year now and I really like it. I like the styling, the ability to modify and the all around ridability of the bike. If I could have changed anything about the design I would have given it a bigger fuel tank, more horsepower and a lighter weight.

    I too have a '14 Standard cb1100, in black, the best color. Really enjoyed your review, and can vouch for most of your points.
    Wanna add a few things:
    - Suspension is really basic for $11,000 motorcycle, especially front shocks. They bottom out on sharp edges very quickly, think potholes, bumps, and road wrinkles. Very dangerous in the corner at speed. For comfort, you can upgrade to 2017 forks, that cost $800. For more sport/race application, there are spring and cartridge inserts for about $400.
    - The front brakes are too good for factory tires. In fact, factory tires are terrible in the rain or cold, and I actually locked up front AND rear brake during a panic stop on wet road. It did not go well. Michelin Pilot Touring seem to be the best all weather tire for our bikes right now.
    - You can protect your dashboard with a basic windscreen. It took the most damage when my bike hit the pavement at 65 mph. And Motegi crash bars saved the engine casing, can't recommend them enough.
    Hopefully you can do another video update soon
    Cheers

    Tick in the box. But add a gallon/5 litre fuel can. Makes the range good and keeps the Harleys fed. A small screen will keep the weight of your chest as well. Hepco and Becker panniers might help. Alternatively their frame and a leather 30x15x30 for city work (splitting lanes etc).

    I'm going to update this guys report. Everything he pointed out is on the spot.
    I have the same bike and it now has 42,000+, other than 'wear and tear' items(brakes, fluids, tires) I have had no problems with the bike. I am getting better mpg than him though...avg. over 22,000 miles is 51 mpg. It runs like the day I bought it and after 3,000 mile oil changes, it shows no or unnoticably small oil consumption.
    Redline is 8.500 rpm and at 65 mph it's at 3,000 rpm. The bike will redline in third gear at around 115 mph. The rev limiter in sixth gear keeps you at a top speed of 110 mph. Also, this bike is considered a sport/ weekend touring bike. Not a sport bike. It is also a nimble bike in town as its wheel base is 1 inch longer than my old 78 KZ 650 C2.
    FYI!

    Great review of the bike. Oh, I am one of those "old men". LOL I still have a 1980 Honda CB750F, now with 110,000 miles on it. My local dealer just had his yearly open house. He has a new 2014 like yours on the showroom floor for $7999. I thought, wow, what a killer deal. Then looking on Ebay I found there were a couple of dealers who had new 2014's for $6999. Wow, what a beautiful motorcycle for that kind of money. But, being how stingy I am with funds , I will just continue to ride my CB750 or one of the three other bikes that I still own. All are paid for and thus no payments is just sooooo desirable.

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The T120 is a very slick bike, enjoy! The CB only has ABS on the DLX models and the heated grips are optional, so that may push the MSRP a little higher but it's been my experience that the Honda dealers will move more on price than the Triumph ones. The CB has, stock, a nicer clutch and beefier brakes, but with the Honda you're also paying a lot for the reliability and Made-in-Japan factor (T120s made in Thailand now I believe). For better or worse.

      considering the T120 is £10,600.00 and the Basic Honda is £11.499 and as far as I know my Triumph is British Made and nearly three years on, it hasn't missed a beat.

    You appear to have downplayed the durability and reliability of this bike against overheating. In other modern bikes, overheating is still a big problem even in today's available technology in heat dispersion. I may not have 1st hand info but modern Ducatis and KTMs truly have serious issues in overheating.

    My 2013 has 37K plus miles now. No problems other than seized rear brakes because I didn't realize, when I tightened the chain, I was also expected to reposition the rear brakes. Two to three hundred dollar mistake on my part.................not a result of poor quality bike. I should have known better.

    The legroom comment makes me unsure about this bike. When I've sat on them the pegs do feel high. The T120 does feel better but is a lot more expensive.

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too true! I think when it comes to the triumphs though, the T100 feels cheap (single disc up front?) in a lot of ways and the T120, which somewhat better in that regard, just isn't as good an engine! It's good, but I think triumph can do better. Then you have Honda vs. Triumph reliability to consider! I've heard bad things about the T120 since and had no problem in the 20k on my Honda yet! Hope that makes your decision harder :P

    Someone jacked my trusty Thruxton recently, they are a hot item in the Northwest right now and giant theft magnets, so as a replacement I'm torn between one of the new 500 rebels for assaulting city traffic, and this. Got an old, well tuned and modded '76 CB 750, but the modernized advantages of this have me interested. I guess I am most interested in how the clutch feels. If it's that's nice and plush, then I wouldn't mind lugging around the 1100 even in dense stop and go traffic. Gonna have to go try them both out.

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I ride in traffic since I ride almost exclusively and live in LA, to my tastes it's pretty light feeling. I have no problems in traffic and it's a very smooth take-off when you want to get going whether you're launching or just moseying.
      It's very similar to my previous bike's clutch which was a CB500f and I assume that means it feels very similarly to the new Rebel 500's as well. That said, otherwise I feel like you couldn't get a more different bike! If you're JUST going to be in the city, I'd try out the 500, they're very good (probably more of a theft magnet, though?). I have to say, saving that weight and the improved MPG would be great. That's why I got my 500 in the first place!
      Just turns out I like to leave the city more than I thought and while the smaller engine certainly did *fine*... Well, let's just say that if I were to do another 700 mile death-valley road trip tomorrow I know I'd rather the bigger CB, MPGs be damned.

      Hi, I haven't ridden the RS unfortunately! I've sat on it at a few shows, though. It's definitely a more modern bike in pretty much every way and I don't think it has the same classic appeal as the CB (or classic simplicity of engineering) but it's a very attractive bike that is going to handle much better in almost every way. I'd assume it would be a little less comfy for long rides, though, and feel more like a sportbike (since it's basically a z900)

      Hey thanks! The seat is a second stock seat I had recovered with one from Luimoto, they're Canadian. The quality is great, fit is custom to the seat itself and doesn't require any cutting etc. I dunno about the price since mine was the first one they did so I sent my seat in and it took a while, but I just paid shipping. I got a seat cover and they got a template.

    • @iamheero

      Yuber Andres Bautista comfort is the exact same, it's just a cover. You take off the stock vinyl and apply the new cover to the seat. It's the same foam. Maybe a little less 'sticky' than the stock foam. While you're doing it, you could probably insert a gel pad too which could help with comfort.

    Have you ridden the T120? I'm debating between this and the Triumph... the CB draws my heart though, I started out on a CB350 at 15. (now 21)
    EDIT: I originally wrote that comment before the end of the video. I see you have rode the T120, hardly a price difference with the new 2017 CB1100EX now though. It doesn't look like they're selling the new RS here in the states? That's outrageous, I'd buy one like tomorrow, it just looks fantastic!

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, new they're similar and it would be tough to decide. The T120 is a solid bike and it really depends on how you'll be using the bike. I think a great all round city bike may be the new Street Twin or maybe the Guzzi V7 (which I LOVE but not for the price) but if you're looking at heavier retro standard bikes it's really between the CB and T120. If you're looking new, try both and see what kind of deals dealers will give you, if any. That said 2013/2014 CBs are a LOT less, like half the price. And frankly that's what I'd grab in a heartbeat.

      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say! If price were not an issue it would be a hard choice. If you could get the CB Deluxe models with the ABS then that'd be much harder, but for a base CB vs base T120, I'd probably get the Triumph. That said, in no world is price not an issue :P The fact that you can probably STILL find CBs on showroom floors from 2014 means you can get them for almost half the price of the T120, at that point it's a no-brainer.

      I've used both the SW Motech and the T-Rex Racing and I recomment both, although the T-Rex gets in the way of the front sprocket cover, it's not a big deal but a little annoying if you do a lot of your own maintenance/cleaning. I also bump my knee on the T-Rex a little, but I think the replaceable slider on it makes it worth it.

      ABS would certainly be nice! If you've ever ridden a naked bike it's all about the same. I'd say it's really not an issue but the quality of helmet you have is highlighted because it's going to be doing all the deflecting for your head. I do a lot of long rides and really enjoy it.

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey good point. It's pre-load adjustable and pretty good. Definitely geared more towards comfort than sport. Furthermore, with a passenger or even a full load of camp gear or luggage you're going to want to ratchet both front and rear preload up. I generally ride at the 4/5 mark alone, 5'10 ~180lbs, and it's a little stiffer which I prefer. Some may enjoy how soft it rides on the lower settings, though. I guess the newer RS models use nicer cartridge suspension so I suspect that'll change how it handles a lot.

      The CB1100 RS model was released in the 2017 model year. This model has all lighting from LED lights, slightly revised engine, 17-inch aluminium wheels, wheelbase 5mm shorter, Tokico radial brake calipers, different caster angle, sportier suspension setup with dual bending valve two-piece Showa right side up 43 mm fork, and sport-oriented tires. (from wikipedia). Not available in the US at all. Basically sportier than the EX slightly.

    Could you please explain the '350 pound weight limit' (not a tourer) comment?
    Why would you not be able to tour on this with a good windshield and perhaps slightly touring-oriented seat?

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 350lbs is the load capacity of the bike, basically the GVWR after subtracting the wet weight of the bike. It means that in addition to the bike, it's rated to carry only 350lbs on top. That means you're limited in what you can carry on the bike. For example, the F800GS BMW is rated to carry almost 500lbs which allows two passengers with gear to spare.
      I didn't say you can't tour on the bike, as I do. I said it's not a touring bike, and it's not. You can tour on a ninja 250 if you want.
      You can certainly change the bike to make it more touring friendly but it's not designed with touring in mind. It has a small tank and a neutral but sporty (read: not nearly as much room as an ADV tourer or feet-forward tourer) and in stock form it has no wind protection. It has tie down points but no practical (without expensive racks and relocating the rear turn signals) way of mounting side hard cases.
