Great series Will. Many thanks for sharing your journey. I'm building this kit now and feeling your pain with regards to the paint. Fingers crossed all works out!!
Will, your foul-ups are way better than my best work! Watching your channel has encouraged me to fix and finish a few models that have sat in their boxes after loosing /breaking/messing up parts, and I've learnt far more from watching how you do and fix things than the guys who don't talk about what went wrong! :)
After seeing the whole series I feel a bit wiser. Long story but exciting! Thanks for taking us along in your adventure. (Now I have to decide what metal paint I want to use for my project...)
I have enjoyed this series and appreciate the hard work you have put in getting to the final result and sharing it with us. I have a few bare aluminium aircraft to get through and will use some of the lessons learned on your "adventure" through this, thanks.
Will...I really enjoy your videos and super dedication to testing of products and techniques: even when everything does not go right. While I also follow other modelers I look forward to seeing that you have a new video uploaded. I have been going through your older videos as I have time. Please enjoy a cold one and keep them coming. John
Dunno about their Chrome, but I had zero masking/lifting problems with Alclad's Polished Aluminum on a Hasegawa 1:32 P-47. Perhaps your gloss black undercoat contributed to the problem? I use Tamiya X-1 gloss black thinned 3/2 with automotive "slow" lacquer thinner. (No other primer was used.) That seems to "bite" well enough to make the Alclad hold on when the masking tape comes off. Loved the build, BTW; most educational!
I wonder if, as it's so shiny, the weathering you applied might have been amplified. If you were doing a paint job that is darker (like the one you put on the Spit) the weathering and so forth probably wouldn't stand out as much. Which is not to say that it looks bad. I like it, and as a bonus I actually listened so that, when I do my NMF Tamiya 'Stang, I'll know what to look out for. Maybe. Just the same, I like it.
Your tenacity and expertise paid off in full Will. It also showed great strength of character on your part that you continued to face these 'dramas.' IMHO it's a phantastic model and is definitely a Will Pattison Beauty. Best wishes.
Will, I've only recently found you on TH-cam. Your videos are fascinating and frustrating at the same time and this bare metal journey is no exception. But you know what? The end result is beautiful. It has to have been worth all of the pain. No? Bare metal is something I really really want to get to grips with because in my view (and it is purely my view) bare metal is the most stunning surface finish to any aircraft, whether it's a jet or a piston engine. You've inspired me to keep experimenting and trying to get better. I may wreck several kits in the process, but I want to crack it if I can. Thanks for your videos. I'm now a committed subscriber and will seek you out again and again.
BTW, Will, if you ever feel like experimenting with this topic some more try Spaz Six Ultimate Mirror Chrome (10000). I've had some good luck with my experiments making it look both like polished aluminum (if sprayed on fairly thick and buffed afterwards) AND actual chrome (if sprayed over a highly polished black base in two ULTRA thin coats). It looks as close as I think we can come without actually chroming plastic. The big advantage is that the final finish is hard and durable (at least as much as I've messed with it). Give it a whirl. Cheers mate.
Will , you tenacious bastard. I am glad i sat thru the entire 8 episode over the last two days, i was too busy back when you put it up. Thank you for giving Murphy, the finger and fought him all the way to the finishing line. A lesser mortal like me would have surrendered. See you around at SMfCG.😊
I don't know, I'm still wary of NMF - I need to do it for a 1/48 Sword Lightning T5 - have seen others results with Alclads etc... but grateful for this excellent series - kudos to you Will!
I like the result, but my conclusion is that I'll never have the nerve nor the patience to build a kit that needs that kind of paint job, Hats off to you. :)
I think it came out beautiful, despite all the mishaps that a great model and in my opinion one of the best metal finishes I've seen. This was an interesting series.
So I heard an Interesting about the Alclad II system: The brands gloss black base is enamel and the instructions on the the bottle say to let it dry overnight. The interesting bit is that you should actually only let it dry an hour or so till it's dry to the touch. They tell me the uncured base gives the Alclad something to really bite into. I'm curious to know if this works with Alclad and other NMFs...
Hi Will. Love your work. You trials and tribulations! You are an inspiration, not to mention entertaining!! Regarding bear metal finish. Im currently building a Tamiya 1/32 P51. The wings I've painted a silver/grey as per some reference pictures I've seen (we all know the stories of the puttied wings...!!) Im sweating over the fuselage so was watching you Sabre build for inspiration.Tonight i was playing with some bits from the spares box and some AK Extreme Metal Chrome. Great finish, but very shiny. then decided to but some AK Interactive Dust Effects on it and have a play....WOW!! Really happy with what i got, a worn Aluminium look, just what I'm after. If you get the chance, and if the Sabre hasn't kick your bear metal ass... Give it a go. i recon with your skill set you will get a lot out of it. Keep up the great work, i always look forward to your videos. Cheers Ivan
Absolutely phenomenal work kiddo! It'd be the pride in ANY collection! Been following since day dot, it was more drama then in a shitty soap, wasn't it? I truly enjoyed the videos, like all of your other ones, I celebrated with you and also suffered with you! As always, very informative, educational, inspirational and entertaining, plus joyful when things went according to plan and oh so painful, when it kicked you in the batteries! Btw, I've got an F-86 if you're interested! lol Pour yourself a large one ,of your preferred beverage and kick back, you've truly deserved it! Onwards and upwards kiddo!
Thanks for the bmf education. Turned out very nice. I did an F-104 with the Ak stuff, with Pledge Multi-Surface as a clear coat and had pretty good luck. Love the streaking on the bottom of your F-86. Did you do it with oils? Looks very realistic. Keep up the great work!
Will, what gets lost in all 7 parts of this is just how small that little bird is!!!Jewelry comes to mind and what you achieved is precious! Two questions come to mind though. I understand that you pushed the limits of what the paint manufacturers offer us but why didn't you go to foil when it IS aluminum and the surface...? Second question is I suppose your build of a B-58 is out of the question huh? It's aircraft lover version of porn.
Well we've seen your finished product...what about Matt and the others ? I don't see natural finishes as something easy to accomplish.........however, another great finished project. Sanity, sanity, sanity!
I did the NASA 747 that ferried the shuttle back in 1979 and dont remember having any problems. I used all automotive paints as far as the aluminum skin of the plane. I dont ever remember having any issues at all with that model. I was quite proud of it. Sadly when I moved,it got damaged beyond repair. I saved it in a box for years hoping to restore it but that never happened. I had taken picturesbof it but I have no idea where those pictures went. Most pictures I took back then are now red. I think your plane came out fine. No one ever notices our goof ups besides us.
Will. You got her done ! She's beautiful ! U might have had a few issues with this build but it's done ! And you did an excellent job of it ! The nay Sayers just suck ! And they didn't do it ! Chances are they wouldn't have the results that you got with what you have done with her ! Very nice ! You will take this as a learning curve for future builds ! What's next ?
Same problem, although you can go to TH-cam in your mobile browser and set it to view desktop version to make it work on mobile. I have no idea why this has to be that way and can't think of any not totally moronic reason.
Great series Will. Many thanks for sharing your journey. I'm building this kit now and feeling your pain with regards to the paint. Fingers crossed all works out!!
Very nice work Will, the canopy fits really well, turned out excellent for knocking it around some. really enjoy watching your videos.
Awsome build. I'm back in the game after a 30 year break. I find your videos very helpful. Your down to earth no BS approach is cool. Keep it up! :-)
Will, your foul-ups are way better than my best work!

Watch your pain thru the whole series your end result looks Great.Learned a lot on this one thanks Will and a good job
I'm so glad you finished this build. It looks fantastic! I feel prepared for an aluminum finished jet project! Though, I did feel teased last night...
I liked the funky music playing during the showing of the completed model! Awesome dude!
You have every right to be proud of this bare metal gem. Many Props. Plus it has lots of stories to tell.

That’s a stunner right there Will, thanks for the really interesting series of videos 👍👍
Excellent work! I love the variations to the panels, looks really awesome!
Nice nice job. Your weathering Technic is astounding. Can't wait to see the next build.

the polished al is a bit tougher for sure.
Beautiful work & weathering. Looks awesome!
I will buy the Collectors Edition, Directors Cut - DVD box of this series ;) Thanks for the effort!
Great result, in spite of your issues and challenges the NMF is excellent I'm both excited and apprehensive with my own kit of this.

Really enjoyed watching your bare metal adventure and an awesome job mate
Wing step... a 'feature' - gold. So I guess we can call KH Su-17 multiple joins as built in features?
just finished an f100 super sabre in aluminum finish..what a nightmare but it was my fist time trying this...am happy with the esults

Says the video is unavailable. I'm in the UK. Shame to miss the last instalment.
are you on mobile? copyright rules are different for that.
Usually works fine on mobile. (you are my evening commute) just not working this time. No worries will check on desktop.
Nice job for all the crude you had to deal with.

that might be great IF their gbb enamel EVER cured.
You crushed it, man!
Congratulations on the great finish and thanks for sharing.

Hello Will. I also can't read your video on my iPad. The previous episodes didn't cause any problems like this one.
it's the music. try on a computer.

Have you considered aluminum foil?
very nice indeed Will

Brother, you sound like you need to do something to regain your mojo.
Looks great to me!!!!!
Great perseverance, good end result, 'm glad you didn't smash it up 👍.
Looks fantastic! I really hate metallics. I get so many imperfections.
Sounds like you need to find a less stressful hobby?🤔
