    This is an amazing find. Thank you so much. Like you I shudder at the cost of Tamiya tape. I'm ordering some today. Your videos have thought me so much after my 20 year hiatus in modeling. Thanks again!

    Will - I love you man! You care so I don't have to! You are my number one go to person for this kind of stuff. I don't have the time (and patience) to run the tests you do. So a big thanks for this (and all the other) tips. But, don't expect a Christmas card from Tamiya this year....

    Can't remember how I ended up finding your channel, but I'm sure glad I did! I'm sure you know how one can get lost in the depths of TH-cam. These tips and insights to modeling are very valuable. I'm glad you're willing to share.

    I just saw this video a few days ago, and have to thank you for it. Yesterday, Michaels had their washi tape on sale at 40% off, and some clearanced as well. I left a happy camper, lol. Heck, even Walmart and Dollar Tree sell it, too, now. It's everywhere!

    I love Tamiya tape. Love it so much that I had purchased a roll of the larger 40mm. Well, after watching this video I decided to double check the 40mm roll. Well, guess what it says on the inside of the tube. That's right...KAMOI TAPE.

    I use Washi tape. It's cheap and readily available at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I haven't had any issues of bleeding or pulling up the paint. And you can get it in many different widths and works almost exactly like tamyia.

    Great bit of detective work there Will! Thanks for sharing. Found a 20 roll set on Amazon for $11, and pulled the trigger. A rainbow of funky colored tape is heading my way thanks to you.

    That was very informative, thank you. Have you ever used 3M pin-striping tape for masking? I have a huge roll of it and it still is kicking even 4 yrs later; I'm not sure how it w/b w/ those flat colors though.

    • @barpfoto
      @barpfoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pedal2Metal yessir, i use it. It's great stuff but as you probably know, the adhesive is very strong and it has to be removed with great care.

  • @2005GLI

    A modeler in a ho scale facebook group who also dabbles in military had metioned this tape years ago. I forgot about it til now. While searching amazon a "recommended" tape showed up "kamoi masking tape kabuki-5" 8 rolls". It looks identical to tamiya tape.

      I just picked up some -- as a 1/72 guy it seems like it'd be perfect for masking D-Day stripes, since it scales up exactly to 18" in 1/72.

    Just found your channel (and subscribed) and love your almost Bob Ross style of delivery - very relaxing. But I wanted to say thanks for this video in particular, as I too swear by Tamiya tape, but literally the moment reached the end of this video I hopped on Amazon and ordered a box of this stuff, for the same price as two rolls of Tamiya tape. Should last me for AGES. I suppose I had better dig out my man-card as well though. LOL.

    • @barpfoto
      @barpfoto  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Modelmaking Guru damn...bob ross? well, heh...i 'll take it! i just try to keep it real and conversational and i'm glad you dig it. :)

    • @gurufoxx
      @gurufoxx 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +will pattison Oh, it's a compliment, that's exactly what I meant - relaxed and conversational, makes me pay attention to what you are saying and take interest. Working through your videos now, watching the primer review with interest as only recently heard about Stynylrez so am watching with interest to see how it is (I'm looking for an easy airbrush primer to replace my beloved Tamiya rattle cans as UK weather means I pretty much get to prime outdoors (which I have to with those cans) maybe two or three days a month!)

    Hi Will, I guess I watched this video 6 years too late. I watched this and went straight to Amazon and ordered the Kamoi washi tape, while I waiting for it to arrive, I saw that my wife had 8 rolls of it at the local office supply store.

    I decided to rid myself of my toxic masculinity and order the “All Girls Favorites” Candygirl Washi Tape because 30 rolls were only $6.99 on Amazon, but then I noticed it wasn’t made by Kamoi Kakoshi, so I ordered the 7mm wide 20 roll set for $13.99 (same as yours but not as wide). My wife is much happier with this decision as well, she likes my toxicity, and she said would divorce me if I ever thought of doing something like that again.

    Good grief! I wish I would have seen this a year ago. I came to the same conclusion after my more limited investigation. I ordered even cheaper "washi" tape from China and was pleasantly surprised by its usefulness.
    Now, I wonder if your genuine Kamoi branded tape is superior. I guess there's only one way to find out. :-?

    Man, I just found this out! Our goddamn cat came running through the house with this tiny tape roll it hos mouth. I picked it up, and lo and behold, it was just like Tamiya tape! I said "where the hell did you get this?" To my aghast, she said "it's 'Washi' tape." I asked "must be really expensive, huh?" She said "nope, it's real cheap at any Michaels, any woman knows that!" I felt like a dumb-ass.

    The washi tape was an excellent find. Found myself a webshop close by that sells the stuff (in the most crazy patterns I might add) and got myself 4 rolls for about 10 euro. Works like charm sofar (pretty much like Tamiya tape) If all keeps working out the way it does now, I know where I'll get my 'refills' when it comes to masking tape.

Here in Germany we can get Tamiya masking tape directly from Japan for 0,75 US dollars (the 6mm version) or 2 US dollars for the 40 mm version. Shipping costs are around 5 us dollars. When i buy a kit online i order some tape to save shipping costs... i buy online in plaza japan btw...

    I guess U have never used the 40mm tamiya tape..? It is made by Kamoi just FYI.
    Also all tamiya tape is rice paper based but the varieties under 40mm are a much thicker variety than you can find most washi tapes. Unlike the washi you are showing the only down side is the flexibility you loose compared to tamiya's (not including 40mm)
    I suggest buying supplies at hobbysearch.com I was shocked you pay $7-$5 a roll ahhhh that's crazy! Shouldn't pay more than $1.40 for tamiya tape and you don't have to loose the flexibility of the material.
