What a beautifully optimized game. Why can’t all games run like this? Almost 100% locked and very slight resolution dips. What an amazing technical achievement.
It requires too much effort make a game optimized like that, and more effort = more cost. And companies like Ubisoft, ea, activision don't want too much cost

This is why exclusives always seem to be better than multiplatform releases (console-wise).
This is basically the quality of Flight Sim on Series S/X and PC. Game Pass is truly starting to provide amazing options. The future looks so bright for Microsoft.
Gamepass is the reason i'm on my xbox most of the time instead of my ps5 which has been gathering dust since i completed GoT and Ratchet n Clank

Can’t deny that! But still as gorgeous as it is can you imagine what forza horizon 6 will look like when it doesn’t have to scale/run at all on a nearly 10 year old xbox one. An amazing job for a last gen/cross Gen game.

I wouldn't say of this generation only because there will be games on next gen that exceed this soon. It is a stunning game however. Playground games are masterful. Microsoft has a much stronger lineup of devs this time around
Horizon has developed into an obsession of mine. I set it separate from games I love as works of art as single player experiences. Games like Bloodborne, BOTW, Hollow Knight, etc. I love those games, I could talk about them for hours. But as for what takes up the majority of my gaming time? There's no contest, it's Horizon. Playground really have turned Horizon into a gaming playground for me. I don't even like online gaming, but Horizon implements it in such a carefree, no-friction kind of way that I play Horizon 4 daily, to this day, three years after it first came out. Just finding someone, joining their convoy, and drifting across the map in a tune of my own creation(Racing The Tide my Xbox handle btw :) ).
It's approachable while being incredibly deep. Insanely deep. You could(and I regularly do) lose yourself entirely in single aspects of it; like drifting, without ever even getting seriously into grip racing, livery designing, rally racing, event creation, etc. etc. I believe it is pretty much the most perfectly balanced simcade handling model of all-time(I'm not going to get into an argument about how you define simcade, so please, don't bother), in that it is obviously circumscribed when compared with something like BeamNG or Assetto, or even Forza Motorsport, yet its physics model is still extraordinarily deep and emergent, and its 'competitors' like NFS Heat and The Crew are not in the same galaxy. It is the handling and physics model that really underpins everything about this game.
The best way to get across how great this series is is to describe myself in 2016, before I ever bought Horizon 3. I had no interest in cars, and the only car games I played were Burnout. If you had to use the brakes at any point I considered that too much like hard work. Then I played Horizon 3...and quite quickly I became obsessed with it. I fell in love with cars. I started playing other racing games. Then all of them. I bought a Fanatec wheel, pedals, shifter, handbrake, and bought a gaming PC specifically so I could get into sim-racing and Assetto modding. I now watch car youtube channels, something I would have thought was the most boring thing on earth back before Horizon.
None of that would have happened if it wasn't for Horizon. When they said they wanted to 'turn gamers into car lovers and car lovers into gamers' I can say with certainty that they did so with me.

Right ? I’m like *sigh* time to buy another Xbox. As a lifelong PlayStation user and fan I absolutely had to buy a Xbox one to play FH3 and Halo. I’ll be getting a ps5 first but you best believe I will be buying a series x in the future for the main sole reason of playing FH5

This game is absolutely bananas, the fact that you can hop onto photo mode on the spot and angle up any car and it looks f'ing incredible is a testament to the incredible achievement that playground achieved. It's f'ing CRAZY. The graphics, the details, the sound, holy shit it's awe inspiring.
He's right about the sound! I'm really impressed with how I can hear cars pulling up behind me, along with the usage of the height channels that are often ignored in games with Atmos.
"Masterpiece" is indeed a suitable word to describe Forza Horizon 5.

2021 has been a surprising year for me -- my top three games are Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, and Guardians of the Galaxy -- three games I had no intention of playing or even enjoying. This, however, is the one game I've been waiting for since it was announced and I'm so happy it looks like it won't disappoint.

Excellent work as always, John. I'm just stunned, honestly. I'm a PS acolyte through and through, but what Microsoft has been doing this generation - putting games of this caliber on a subscription service DAY 1 - is truly commendable. I have never been a racing fan, but I dipped my toes into Forza Horizon 4 and thought "wow, I really like this."

I have nothing but respect for Playground Games for making such efforts to push the limits and optimize their games. Also to not rush to release in an incomplete state, especially in todays world where it pretty much became the norm to release a game each year even at the cost of quality, innovation, and buggines. It probably has to do with the publisher Xbox as well but idk.
Thank you for including the audio performance in your analysis! I'd love to see a heavier focus on it in the future, as a great soundscape (as you already described) can elevate a good game to even greater heights.

Playground Games is a beast. This is the one game that makes me want a Series X. There's nothing similar on ps5. Amazing game, i enjoyed a lot this series on 360 e One.
FH5 looks like it's going to be the first certified classic of the generation. PS5 has had some good releases but nothing jaw dropping like this. I highly recommend getting an Xbox! I have both PS5 and XSX, and the Xbox still gets a ton of use from me. With it's vast back compat library, superior back compat capabilities for cross-plat games (AutoHDR, resolution and FPS boost), and the incredible deal that is Game Pass, it's a fantastic system that is a huge step up from the XB1.

@@luke_y_444 I wouldn't really know about Demon's Souls because while I have it and have played it several times, I still can't get past the first level (even when following a guide). I'm sure I could, but I don't have the free time to pour hours and hours into it just to get a tiny bit of progression. It's tough for me to believe that a game that's that inaccessible can be called a masterpiece.

Here is an idea for Forza Horizon 6 - Vice City. I mean.. Miami in the 80s. All cars only up to 1989 and the same for the songs and radios. Replica of Miami and we are set. That would be the most nostalgia filled Forza yet.

After buying this game i fell in love! i've been playing forza horizon games ever since horizon 2, and forza horizon 5 is defiantly the best out of them all, makes me feel like a little kid again lol

Forza Horizon has been my favorite game for a few years now. It's got the perfect combination of sim and arcade and it's very well optimized. Been playing since the 3rd game since I only play on PC. Amazing. Can't wait for tomorrow!
I remember thinking Dirt 5 looked pretty good, but this really makes it look last gen.

While GT7 is currently the best sim racing game out it doesn’t impress graphically as much as this game. This game is way bigger in scope (open world) and it feels that way. The attention to detail is amazing and almost over done but highly appreciated. It’s much easier to make a closed track visually appealing but a huge open world like this takes a lot more work and there’s just no comparison out there. Not even Forza Motorsport 8 will be this detailed with the exception of car models.
Forza Motorsport 8 will be using the new version of the same game engine called "Forza Tech", since Turn10 is the one which develops the engine and all the tools for this game. Thats why you see the advice: "Turn10 and xbox game studios presents" a playground games event.

When I started watching this video, I thought to myself, this game reminds me of driveclub from a visuals perspective. The during John’s intro to the vehicles, he plays a snippet of the driveclub loading music.
Only ps fan said that driveclub looks good. Its a piece of s..Even digital foundry was hard on graphics. I bought a ps4 pro and go to play the suppose to be a great looks ng game. Then i realize how stupid a fanboy could be. Piece of crap in every category. Crap!!

Uh... no they didn't. If memory serves they were harsh on the AA implementation in Driveclub only.
Driveclub still looks better than this game and it features SSR on car bodies in game faking RT even though it's a last gen game with no PS4 Pro enhancements. Additionally Driveclub's weather effects are also an improvement over what is shown here in FH5 and things like POM were also used liberally on tracks and building surfaces. Volumetrics were everywhere with SSS and appropriate translucency for plants... again things that DF says are new to FH (which isn't strictly true but it certainly doesn't look right in FH4), but were already a thing modeled correctly in Driveclub.
Driveclub's weather systems are very dynamic and while you wouldn't see a dust storm in Chile literally all other forms of weather are accounted for including rain, snow, aurora and lightning which was only just featured for the first time in the base game with FH5, but again was in Driveclub (although added post launch it is shown everywhere).
Clouds are also volumtric fully dynamic casting appropriate shade, GI and even being factored into dynamic cubemap reflections so glass doesn't show a void for sky reflections. That said other Volumetrics in Driveclub were more accomplished than previous Forza Motorsport and Horizon titles. It looks like Playground Games is just catching up with regards to accurate light transport with respect to volumetric effects on smoke clouds. Wind also seems to hardly be a consideration for plumes of smoke in previous Forza Motorsport and Horizon titles.
Seriously if I break things down point by point FH5 is still catching up to Driveclub and so too is Microsoft Flight Simulator (which still looks better than this so long as you fly an appropriate distance away from the ground; enough to showcase massive levels of detail but far enough to hide the seams).
Driveclub was so far ahead of its time it is still the bar to beat in my personal opinion. However my opinions aside when you look at Driveclub objectively in terms of the shear number of visual effects being run in realtime at 30FPS in 1080p in a game... the closest comparison is Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) for PC specifically and even so the PC struggles to keep things looking as good as Driveclub particularly clouds and reflections in water bodies. It's actually quite odd that a PS4 exclusive from 2014 is still neck and neck with the latest PC and Xbox games.
Meanwhile other PS4 and PS5 games are pushing settings similar to Driveclub today like Ghost of Tsushima and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
Bottom line this game while much better looking than previous Forza games - by quite a bit - it's still playing catch up to the best looking games already out there including some open world titles like Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima.
Anyway that's all from me... go away now.
This game has that WOW factor. If you have a brand new 4K TV do yourself a favor I speak from experience. Get a Xbox Series X|S immediately download Forza Horizon 5 and watch as your jaw drops at the graphics. There is no game with this level of graphics currently on the market. This is the first game I would say actually looks better than real life. The graphics are insane. 🔥🔥🔥
When I play on performance mode I have noticed pop in on the bushes on the side of the road, it's like they're half loaded. It's very distracting, has anyone else noticed this?

It's weird though, MSAA isn't demanding on the forza horizon games even at 4K. They must have thier own unique implementation, in other games you get a HUGE fps hit with MSAA at any setting

Gamers have no idea how important sound is. It’s sad the video game community and developers are stuck in that traditional mindset that visual is one of the most important factors in gaming. Audiophile and videophiles both argue sound is more important by majority. I hope with SX and PS5 audio becomes much more important. 3D audio/spatial is finally moving in the right position but we need to push devs more and that falls on the gaming communities demand.

The engine audio has been improved on all of the cars I've tried so far, but what I don't understand is why they only make use of the low frequencies in the 2 cockpit views. As soon as you switch to outside cameras the sound falls flat.
In cockpit view you can feel the rumble of the exhaust on low revs, it's amazing.
I'm so pumped for Horizon and can't wait for the next Motorsport as well. So glad a game is actually just going to work at launch, and work flawlessly. I agree with everything you said, except the music, I almost already turn it down just so it's on but I can barely hear it. I can still enjoy it, but for me it's all about hearing the cars and environment

Note the foliage shots starting at 17:30. These are better graphics than Crysis in a 60-frames-per-second racing game on a console. This engine is so robust and scalable that it could be used for on-foot open-world action games!
Hence fable which they will produce this time.

This is a masterpiece. I bought Forza 7 Ultimate edition when it went on sale for the last time in the Microsoft store and it looks amazing too! Forzza 5 is next level ... it’s neat to see Digital Foundry NOT kicking the Xbox between the legs like they often do (bcuz PS5 can do no wrong). Yes I own both systems 😍 and they both rock... a Well done review chaps

The reduction in foliage and detail is annoying at 60fps on Series X but I can't go back to dirty 30fps, it is too choppy for me. I wish they could have hit 60fps with dynamic 4K and better foliage and detail. If you look at a TH-cam channel called Resero and their comparison video they show quite the stark difference in foliage between performance and quality mode on series X. It is actually a bit disappointing. This DF video makes out it is minor. I love DF but I don't feel that point John made is accurate. I say that respectfully.
Also what he said about motion blur strikes me as odd, he speculated that it used a lower quality setting but if performance mode runs twice as good that's going to noticeably reduce the motion blur effect. The intensity of the blur is based on the visual difference between the frames, the more frames you have the less difference there is = less blur.
@@OGPatriot03 I agree, I actually find it odd that we are in the new gen now and still having to choose between resolution and 60fps. That was fine with One X but the series X is technically more powerful than my PC with RTX2060 yet I can get 45fps solid at 4k on that for this game. Also who wants to play games at 30fps anymore?

Forza Motorsport 7 way back in 2017 played on 4k ultra settings on the old Xbox One is still unbeaten and cleaner looking.

I hope 5 is fun. Never got into 4, most every time I booted it I ended up just going on an aimless rampage, mowing down the scenery. 3 was fine, but for feeling, aesthetics and enjoyment my favourites were 1 and 2.

While I think that the graphics and technical state of the game is pretty damn good; I hope that the next installment in the series improves upon certain aspects of the game especially three main things: Volumetrics, particle effects and water rendering.
But again considering that this is the first Forza to be released for the Series platform of consoles this is seriously impressive.

Playground Games have said an update on November 9th launch increases Xbox Series S resolution to 1440p from 1080p. Also Dolby VISION is enabled for this game on my LG C1.

Everybody keeps telling me that the 4K30 mode is great but it hurts my eyes and many things are too blurry to appreciate in motion. It's a shame that since it runs so well at 4K60 that the quality mode couldn't have taken inspiration from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and had the option for a 120hz 4K40 mode. 40 seems to be just in range of the sweet spot for me, at least on an LG CX TV which feels slightly worse for low framerate content than many other TV's.
4k120 tvs are still very rare,they need to do it to the Series S(2k 40) 2k 120 are much more common
@@oror3751 I know 4K120 TV's are rare but people do use monitors also. I get that it wouldn't affect much of the playerbase, but I figure if this game is able to be both 4K60 and 4K30 I wonder how much extra wiggle room is possible for quality mode to squeeze out an extra 10FPS. I'm sure it would have been possible, but not a priority for them. 4K40 is legit amazing to experience, it feels like the best of both worlds. Maximum visual fidelity and a much smoother/fluid experience.

Pc specs: Ryzen 5 5600x @ 4.675 ghz
Asus strix RTX 2070 8 O.C gpu @ 1935 mhz
Pc was in high settings.
Conclusion: looks much more beautiful on my Xbox, can tell it was tailored for it.
A great Digital Foundry analysis is my absolute favorite kind of analysis, and heightens my impression of a given game tremendously :)
