    Hi Guys, This type of fixturing nomenclature is also great for CMM inspection as well. I built a twin set, much larger with additional capabilities that we needed for super precision work. One fixture was for final insp. and the 2nd was for in process insp. in the department. A little bit different layout and nomenclature, but essential did the same function. That was back in 2000. You can even make these larger than the table to accommodate for more holding outside the travel window as long as you have clearance outside for full range of motion

    That is a vast improvement from the OEM clamps with the high flying bolts! I use pins and Mitee Bites. When using all MBs, isn't there a risk of stock rotation? Was there temptation to replace the mill table?

  • @CharlesAlanRobinson
    @CharlesAlanRobinson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Titan, that looks like a wonderful solution.
    I am following this new product and info closely, and purchased the little Tormach for my shop. I just checked with Tormach web site and didn't see any of these plates for sale yet. I am interested in the plate if you make them available.
    I'm a little concerned that you may limit the utility of makerspace77, because folks may not be able to follow along if they don't have the same fixturing. If I understood you correctly, it's going to be imperative that your kids start with very precise blocks. That's not going to be a problem for your family, but it could be for mine and others. Maybe that's another business opportunity for you or other machinists to create and sell the raw materials to those of us that will need them.
    Maybe you should consider another solution for the web site utilizing the Mitee-Bite T-slot clamps and the standard Tormach plate. That might remove the requirement for precise 'starting' materials and be more universal. (By the way, there could be lots of better solutions than the T-slot clamps. I'm no expert)
    Thanks so much for doing this, and the instruction available in your online classes. They are great. I assume that we will learn soon that some of the exercises are compatible with this new tiny machine, or maybe some of them will be modified to be a little simpler, and to scale for this machine.

    When your kids are old enough if they are on a FIRST Robotics team you'll be a very popular parent mentor. We are a small team, but our kids can take an idea and take it through kinematics, CAD, CAM, and CNC route, laser cut, or 3D print it to completion. Hopefully this next season we can get a Tormach 770 so they can do more machining since we saved $10k by all of the competitions being cancelled. *cries*

    Another little problem with these cam-action clamps is that you can bottom the screw up against the counterbore floor of the hexagonal washer and it will not apply the desired lateral pressure to the part. For a children-operated fixture, I'd rather choose something a bit more fool-proof such as Pitbull clamps from the same manufacturer, they are more predictable. Another advantage of them is that they use standard screws that can be easily replaced when worn with ones from the nearest hardware store instead of special cam-head screws.

    Titan any thoughts on getting a pocket NC for your kids eventually? Not sure if you're aware of it but for about 6k you can have a miniature 5 axis mill in your home. They've been out for a couple years now I believe and I eventually hope to get one for my home and building parts for my RC airplane builds. I was a Tool and Die maker apprentice for about 2.5 years until the recession started in 08-09. After loosing 2 different apprenticeships due to the economy I was able to get into Quality at another company that eventually went out of business but it started my new career path. I am now a quality engineer. I miss machining so much I started building and buying different tools for my workshop at home. Money is always tight due to life circumstances but I'm blessed for what I do have so no complaining. I designed a mini mill bought a miniature mill table and router used on CNC router tables and cut most of the parts myself had a coworker at my work weld it up and its near completion. Just waiting for the adapter and Er-16 collets to come in the mail either today or tomorrow. Once I get those I can shim the Z-axis to be square to the table by swing indicating it with my dial indicator. Man it stinks having to rebuy a lot of these tools I had from my tool and die days that I sold for cheap due to needing the money but hey I'm alive and rebuilding. Best of luck in this Covid19 days with your business. We've been able to stay open here in Wisconsin due to some items we make are considered Essential but a lot of our orders are being pushed out now. I hope this all goes away without hurting many people and we all can get back to our lives. I love the videos thanks for sharing TItan.

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pocket NC is a joke. The people who designed it violated every rule about stick-outs and overhangs. It's almost like it was designed by non machinists. That thing chatters like a teenaged girl.

    • @justinlareau2227
      @justinlareau2227 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @B &B thank you for the message. I hope it was intended for me and im not mistaken. I'm trying to stay positive and optimistic that everything will rebound quickly. The company I work for is a small metal stamping company it was the company I actually was a tool and die maker apprentice at before getting laid off in 2009 and that time the owners kept everyone as long as possible I mean some weeks we only worked 3 days and did a lot of cleaning. Being a small family owned company that's one of the pluses when things get slow we're like a family and they do try to do what's best for all of us most of the time. I am a little worried tho if I were to get laid off because I don't have a college degree and worked my way up into Quality Engineering and it seems to be hit or miss getting hired in that role with other companies. Some write me off instantly when seeing no college degree. Not long ago I had 3 interviews with a large company and all my experience and my current role was easily 95% identical for the role they were hiring for. The quality manager told the HR manager at their corporate office he wants to pursue better educated applicants. Idk if it's been filled but for 5 months afterwards they were still posting the position on LinkedIn. That worries me. Then I have had companies practically begging me to work for them and offering me more money but I have a loyalty to my current employer due to again a family owned business that has a comfortable and mutual respect atmosphere.

    • @justinlareau2227
      @justinlareau2227 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xenonram I have not used one so I cannot give an opinion based off my own personal experience. I completely agree it's not a perfect unit but for the price I have yet to find something comparable that's better. I get that yes I could but a used Bridgeport with a prototrac around the same price and probably be able to do most of what the NC pocket does but I don't have the space or setup at home for a large piece of machinery. Alot of TH-cam channels I follow use the pocket NC and have decent reviews of it. Especially when being used on softer materials like aluminum brass etc. Again for a home cnc that has 5 axis i don't think you can beat it for its price point. Just my thoughts. I completely agree with you that it's not perfect but any means but for a home hobbyist I think it's great and fairly affordable. Who knows maybe the next version will improve the items you and others don't like about it.
