The snap shot of the death of the Soviet and German soldiers at the beginning really brings home how pointless the whole idea of war is. Two men locked together in death instead of friendship. Glad they are going home. Thank you

My Great Grandfather was M.I.A. somewhere between end of December 42 or beginning January 43 in Stalingrad. We were looking for him for several years but he just vanished. Last letter from him was painting a dark picture of the horrible, surreal scenario around him.. Like he knew it will be his last one... His last position was somewhere near the airport of Stalingrad. Till today I have the hope that one day someone will find him.
My grandfather is also posted missing in Action somewhere in Russia at the beginning of the Invasion I two hope one day that we will be able to give his name back so I know how you feel best of luck to you and godspeed

@@philwilliams5949 очень сложно найти говорю как поисковик очень редко у солдат бывают с собой медальоны так как их перед войной выпускали в Германии они закончились к 1942 некоторые солдаты подписывали ложки и котелки но тут как повезет бывает ложки железные и нечитаемые также бывает очень плохой грунт который все съедает в хлам а бывает солдаты очень разбиты осколками очень сильные бои были я щяс не копаю но когда капал мне попадались фляжки солдатские с 20 пробоинами от пуль каски в которых до 40пробоин с осколками. Бывало от человека одна рука и россыпь косточек мелких и видно в блиндаже и пулеметной ячейке хвост от 81 миллиметровой мины. Но будем стараться искать по возможности и опознавать тех каво можем по возможности а вам удачи и добра

My great grandfather too never returned from the eastern front, he went I'll call it silent in winter of 42-43, many many German soldiers would never return from that battlefield, we lost millions 😢. I don't think people quite grasp that number,,,,, if you ever have the time and patience plus 1 million little flags on a lawn and you'll start to see the toll visually from the eastern front.
These videos make me sad and happy at the same time. Sad on how they died and were just left there. Happy that they were finally found and are being given the recognition and proper burial they deserve after all these years of being MIA.

Do you understand Russian, because I'm not sure what these excavations are about. these are German soldiers who invaded Russia and were brutal cruel murderers. I don't understand why a Russian would have an interest in these soldiers being honored with proper burial. Maybe they are on a mission to clean their land of them. what are they doing with the remains?

Officially these are considered war graves. They're not MIA. This is grave robbing. There are probably people alive still who knew many of these boys.
@@beanzbeanz But shouldn't they be returned to their families? ID tags were left for a reason, I would assume. I know sometimes the war dead with dog tags, the dog tags were returned to the families. Most war dead graves are marked, but these aren't, they're just randomly buried. I can only imagine a parent, brother, or sister wondering what happened to their loved ones.

There is german organisation that is repatriating these soldiers back home and they are contacted after these finds. Soviet soldiers are having official burial as well so these guys are hardly robbers.
@@debbieverret4033 Most of these were just "forgoten" as the front ran over and left behind these two. That dog tag had both parts, so german army had no info about this guy so def MIA.
Think of all those ships and fighter planes that also went down in the oceans - there are lots of remains that will still _never_ be found.
My wife's uncle just disappeared into the Russian Army during that war. The family have no idea where, when or how he died. Very sad. Handsome young man.

Great stuff. It must be amazing doing all the planning, searching & hard work to be rewarded with not only touching history but helping people. War has always been a human endeavor sadly. Sometimes friends become enemies & vice versa. After WW2 which had the biggest toll on civilians & soldiers in history, it is nice to see when old foes became friends. For example, Wehrmacht Major Hans Von Luck who was on Rommel’s staff became friends with Major John Howard of Pegasus bridge fame. They met annually until their passing.
I am a US Army veteran. I got out right as war started. I always wondered how I’d do in combat but I am glad that I didn’t. I know a lot of my ex company mates changed after their deployments, so I feel lucky that I didn’t go if not guilty. I came close to reenlisting which would have guaranteed my deployment as I was a 19kilo. When you think of even our training, it’s hard. PT 4 times a week. Non stop training & out in the field. You’re always sleep deprived & either freezing or sweating your ass off. But war is something totally different. It’s the ultimate test of courage & sacrifice. So many young men died cold & alone. It’s horrific to think about. Sadly Russia is conducting the biggest combat operations in that area since WW2.
Anyway, your excavations just highlight the immensity of WW2. It was millions of soldiers. Millions of dead civilians & soldiers. When you see those old bones it’s haunting. You wonder who they were. Were they scared? Did they suffer? If you look at the WW2 casualties numbers the number of MIA is awful. Besides finding great artifacts & relics of history, you are doing a great service for these soldiers. They can finally go home & be reunited with family if any are still living & be properly laid to rest instead of being left like detritus on an abandoned field.

Ken- my dad claimed that he and another New zealand soilder had too man handle 1,000 dead bodys in one day after the Cassino battle in italy 1944. They had too Drag them out off the rough Italy terrain and some were covered in big maggots and no matter what breed or colour the skin off a person is they go purple colour when left out in the sun and elements. Do not know if this was a record in bury bodys in one day

Reading the Dog Tag: (appears to be) Infantry or Rifleman "Jager" (J.), Antitank (Pz.Ahw), Company (Kp.)
I think the next bit is Jagerregiment (J.R.) 178 (178th Light Infantry Regiment) maybe of the 76th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)
142 is the soldier's number in that company.
If that's the case, the 76th Division made it to Stalingrad, was destroyed there and this fellow with it somewhere along the journey. It was later reformed in Germany and fought on the Western Front.

After the battle for the Falklands was over, the Argentine soldiers that fell were buried as unknown because they didn't wear dog tags.The latter are elemental assets every soldier must have.
It's too bad DNA samples were not taken for example finger nails for later identification. A lot of people in Argentina are still looking for relatives made to disappeared by the former regime.
As an aside, the first official, streamlined use of 'dogtags' was during the Franco-Prussian War. The Prussians pioneered it.

Incredible!!!.It is true, i saw that German soldiers's remains had the halves of the dog tags in their skulls.Those who buried them knew that one day the remains would be dug out and identified.That's foresight.

The other half of the dogtag would have been forwarded by the unit leader responsible for the tags to the appropriate authority. If time permitted, the soldiers would have been reinterred, but often given the fluidity of the military situation on the Eastern Front, this was not always possible, as we have seen by this evidence. So, half of a dogtag in an improvised, temporary grave, gives me hope that the relatives ultimately found out about their relatives. The German government is still actively involved in finding the missing from WWII. These Russian grave robbers are finding complete dog tags, which gives me the concern that these men are still considered missing, and I do not trust THEM to make proper notification. They are doing this for profit, or they are just sick, or both.

I applaud the efforts of these guys and perhaps it's already being done, but I hope the remains are identified and repatriated. I wish trained field archeologists could have a go at these sites before so much is disturbed and carried away.
These guys every year collect the bone harvest as volunteers if I remember correctly but only 10 -15% of them can be identified an that is only if they still had their name tags or put their names on something of theirs that has survived but yes as best as they can the Germans go back home an so do the Russians
These men clearly are at least somewhat experienced archeologists. Note their careful excavation techniques
There is another group on here doing it. They’re older videos, but they are being commissioned to dig up the German soldiers where there are known graves and they’re being shipped home.

Its unbelieveble how many fallen soldiers that was just buried where they fought and never sent home. I guess that was a common thing back then. So many of these soldiers never returned home for their burial. In many cases they look like they where just dumped into a pit without taking their ammo and gear, sometimes even several bodies in the same hole. Maybe it was done by civilians after the war during the clean up. Who buried them, Whats their story, how did they fall, how did these locations look during time of war..so many questions when I see these videos. Good work guys. Finally they can get an ID and a proper place to rest.

sorry ... I see them as ordinary soldiers who are required by circumstances as soldiers in general ... not about the Nazis that I see. whether the German army or any other army that became his opponent, they were just ordinary soldiers and served as the army's duty.

It would be useful and interesting to see a photo of the box/padlock etc... in which the key could have been used... !
Digging around in these grave areas can be wrought with danger. Buried ordinance can still go off if the spades used for digging can come in contact with the detonator part of the ordinance. These guys are in my book very courageous to be doing this.

It definitely does pose a significant threat and some types of ordnance can become extremely unstable after being buried for years. Things like Phosphorus can ignite when it come s into contact with the air. This happened on December the 1st 2021 - Four people were hurt, one seriously, when a World War Two bomb blew up on a railway construction site in the German city of Munich. The fire brigade says it happened during drilling work near Donnersberger Bridge, close to the main station. Also have a search for Exeter University ww2 bomb.

@@robd1329 it's a fairly common for bombs leftover from the war to be found in Europe and an area will need to be evacuated until it's deemed safe even in recent years. The chances of something that a soldier that's been buried in the mud might have on him like a grenade or mortar shell going off is probably much slimmer though.

To visit Russia during the may day parade was a very heartfelt emotional experience.. to see Russians carrying photos of ww2 era relatives was something I never will forget or what I felt standing there watching.. I know who and what won ww2

China joined the war in 1939 (although they were being attacked by Japan as early as 1934 or before) Poland joined in the war in 1939, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Finland joined in 1939, the Scandinavian countries joined in 1940, France joined the war in 1939, the British Empire which includes Canada joined the war in 1939, Tonga, Morocco, Tunisia, Nepal, South Africa, Kuwait all joined the war in 1939, Egypt and Greece joined the war in 1940 and the United Stated joined the war in 1941, along with most of the non-British Caribbean nations and some Central American countries.
obviously i didnt list all of the smaller countries but since many were part of the Dutch, French or British colonies, they were all brought into the war the same time their "parent nation" was.

War is a never a good thing and just remember some of these soliders left their families behind wondering what happened to them. Poor remnants of poor man who just followed orders and went on to kill people they didn't know. Using all materials which were not their property. Handling tools which were not of their profession. They suffered and were compelled to kill other men who didn't harm them in any way. So they went to a stranger land carrying nothing in theit pockets. They had nothing on their own but their lives. And they lost them...
Please- don't call invaders and murderers poor soldiers carrying out their orders...

Most of them would’ve passionately and fanatically supported Hitler and fascism. See that’s the thing with man, we’re the only creature on earth that can destroy its own root structure. We support hate, we support dictatorship and genocide; but when we see the results of all of that, when we see the dead bodies in graves we speak of it like a great tragedy. Like, where did this come from? How did this happen?
If we support hate then we get hate. It’s a classic case of he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.
Keep in mind just seven men brought Nazism to Germany. All this shit begins with philosophy and ideals, not bombs or guns but philosophy. Speeches from behind podiums. That’s where it begins. With the pen, not the sword
@@adamsalieri7048 Why not? These men were conscripted into the military beyond their control. Under a dictatorship there are no conscientious objector‘s. You either take your orders or you are executed. These men had no choice
