That MP40 needs to be put in an electrolysis bath for about 24 hours to lift all the rust. I'd guess that once you've done that, some of the inner parts might still be operable.
That would be super awesome. Those guns are great. I just bought an MP40 22LR and unfortunately it’s not automatic like the original thanks to very stupid laws. Id love to find one!
The corrosion on it is so bad that I doubt you could make it operable with just a bath. Even if it was operable, I wouldn’t trust firing it. You’d need to replace some parts with civilian MP40s, but that would be close to impossible to do in Europe if you don’t live in Switzerland.

Cross of Honour of the German Mother. Commonly known as the mothers cross. Wow! The mp40 is an amazing find, very lucky to find one complete. Well done.
@Duglet That depends on the quality of the cross. A bronze cross was awarded to mothers with 4-5 children, A silver if she had 6-7 children and gold to mothers with 8 or more. In this case it seems to be a silver one so 6-7 should be correct.
@@stevetoad10 I agree and that was my thinking as well when I saw this. Anything is possible but its highly doubtful a Mother's Cross would be found on a battlefield.

That medal at 9:02 is known as the "Mother's Cross", and I'm certain there weren't many mothers out there on the battlefield. Needless to say, the German soldier was probably carrying this in honor of a mother who had already died, probably in one of the allied bombing raids.
It might've also been from a civilian fleeing with the army, which was common in the late stages of the war. I can't be certain, but I think I have an idea of where they are, and it was a battlefield where German soldiers and civilians alike were trying to desperately escape from the Red Army, but they became trapped in an encirclement.
Imagine the stories that lie here. So sad that they found so much stuff from people that died there. You didn’t just leave your bolt laying in a field.
Dullear087 FTW if you ran out of ammo you wouldn’t throw away your gun... you would retreat with it to get more ammo. Guns aren’t cheap and in unlimited supply
Man that would be interesting to go WW2 metal detecting and finding cool stuff, especially guns and bullets and such, imagine finding an actual gun and it still fired
I agree with Pete Peterson below about throwing the bolts away. In Iraq, Whenever I found an AK 47 or whatever other weapon, I would always take the bolt and put it in my pocket. By the time it was time to redeploy, I had a whole box of them I tossed in the burn barrel.
For those who are doubtful over the mother's cross. Think to the late stages of the war, germ any was desperate and near enough everyone was conscripted to fight. It's possible that a mother was conscripted to fight or that the cross was given to either a son or a sibling as something of a good luck charm, in short there are many reasons why such a piece would be there.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This is exactly my reasoning too. 30.000 civilians and 90.000 german soldiers were encircled here and on the run for the Soviets. It's understandable one doesnt want to get caught with such a medal.
As incredible a find it is, more than likely it's too badly corroded to be restored to working order. There are so many parts you'd have to replace, you'd effectively just have a new MP40. A shame really, it's a beautiful weapon.
With the passage of time, what you are finding right now might be all that you find. Not much longer all of these amazing historical pieces will eventually turn to dust in the ground. Amazing amazing stuff. I think that this is so interesting.
Most likely a gift from a soldiers mother, maybe as a gift to remember her or something like that, the medal was issued 1938 before the war started, so likely that it was a parting gift of sorts.
That cross is one of the most jaw dropping things I’ve ever seen come out of the ground. Congrats. To the right buyer that thing is worth a lot I’m guessing.
It's crazy to think of the story behind each item... who wore it or who used it. And, finding so many German and Soviet items together, they must have fought and died right there. I would be scared of finding human remains.

kinda funny if you were digging a deep hole down just to find a shovel.
🤣
kinda ironic
@Gods Grace Or Mans Synthetic Manipulation omg ahhahahahaha
That MP40 was an awesome find.
That medal at 9:02 is known as the "Mother's Cross", and I'm certain there weren't many mothers out there on the battlefield. Needless to say, the German soldier was probably carrying this in honor of a mother who had already died, probably in one of the allied bombing raids.
more likely a civilian retreating with German forces who was killed there.
Or a keepsake his wife gave him to remember her by while out at war.
It might've also been from a civilian fleeing with the army, which was common in the late stages of the war. I can't be certain, but I think I have an idea of where they are, and it was a battlefield where German soldiers and civilians alike were trying to desperately escape from the Red Army, but they became trapped in an encirclement.
Have you thought about giving the MP40 an electrolysis bath?
Alexander McCarthy They have to turn them over to museums or the police. They can’t keep weapons they find, which is both ridiculous and depressing.
@@DeimosPC like they have to sing that
@@DeimosPC that mp40 wasnt in any shooting condition and should therefore fall under antiquity laws
at least in germany
Guys is it allowed to join you for a trip? Just for looking i never did metaldetecting befor but im a history nerd ^^ so may i join you for 1 day?

No
The MP 40 find was absolutely insane!
That Mother's Cross of Honor is so beautiful. The National Socialists had amazing sense of style and fashion.
Hugo boss made their uniforms, they still design clothes to this day
The Nazis were Germans after all. And one thing Germans definitely have, is taste
National socialists. not DEMOCRATIC socialists. THIS time Bernie will get it right, I'm sure.
@Have-a- Cigar she called you a Jew! Lol 🤣🤣🤣
Banger it’s not their design... Hugo Ferdinand Boss was the producer
Imagine the stories that lie here. So sad that they found so much stuff from people that died there. You didn’t just leave your bolt laying in a field.
If u ran out of ammo Yea u won't carry additional weight if there's no use for it lol
Dullear087 FTW you get what I’m trying to say. You can connect many things they found with situations in people being killed.
Dullear087 FTW if you ran out of ammo you wouldn’t throw away your gun... you would retreat with it to get more ammo. Guns aren’t cheap and in unlimited supply
What probably happened is the rest corroded away.
@@cooperpriest3922 back then they were
Man that would be interesting to go WW2 metal detecting and finding cool stuff, especially guns and bullets and such, imagine finding an actual gun and it still fired
Its a mothers medal given for having children the more children the better the medal. (Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter)
Serious I knew the mothers would get some sort of reward for children but didn't know a medal that's pretty interesting
The harmonica gave me chills
Swedish Uchiha yea
ok, this is the BEST video I've watched on WWII metal detecting, so enjoyable to watch. Thank you.
I agree with Pete Peterson below about throwing the bolts away. In Iraq, Whenever I found an AK 47 or whatever other weapon, I would always take the bolt and put it in my pocket. By the time it was time to redeploy, I had a whole box of them I tossed in the burn barrel.
Me metal detecting: Well, you see, what we have here is I dunno a chunk of metal or something.
Incredible find. Truly remarkable.
it makes my eye watery whenever someone discover old relics of the past war
even though I was never there
Just wish they'd take a little more time digging around an object before pulling it out of the ground.
Just imagine going back in time and seeing the guy looking for his razor or his pin
Probably a majority of these pins didn’t have an owner to find them anymore
@@Jacob-wh8nh sad but true
For those who are doubtful over the mother's cross. Think to the late stages of the war, germ any was desperate and near enough everyone was conscripted to fight. It's possible that a mother was conscripted to fight or that the cross was given to either a son or a sibling as something of a good luck charm, in short there are many reasons why such a piece would be there.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This is exactly my reasoning too. 30.000 civilians and 90.000 german soldiers were encircled here and on the run for the Soviets. It's understandable one doesnt want to get caught with such a medal.
The MP40 is an amazing discovery, that can be restored.
As incredible a find it is, more than likely it's too badly corroded to be restored to working order. There are so many parts you'd have to replace, you'd effectively just have a new MP40. A shame really, it's a beautiful weapon.
I agree, it won't be the same without the original parts, but it'll still be the MP40
I would love to see a vid of all the finds of the year, when they're all cleaned up with some backstory !
With the passage of time, what you are finding right now might be all that you find. Not much longer all of these amazing historical pieces will eventually turn to dust in the ground. Amazing amazing stuff. I think that this is so interesting.
That forest reminds me of band of brothers when they come across the concentration camp
Luke Hopton facts my man
Finding that mp40 gave me chills. Loved the condition of that silver and blue medal. Wow!
Great episode
It’s a Mother’s Cross in Silver. On a battlefield? Interesting.
Thought the same, almost too strange..
Most likely a gift from a soldiers mother, maybe as a gift to remember her or something like that, the medal was issued 1938 before the war started, so likely that it was a parting gift of sorts.
@@fin29864 yes or his mother had been killed in a bombing raid so a way to remember her.
That cross is one of the most jaw dropping things I’ve ever seen come out of the ground. Congrats. To the right buyer that thing is worth a lot I’m guessing.
Not really.theres a lot of em about.
@@lunadevass5715 makes sense with the amount of casualties in ww2 all those soldiers had arms at some point
I just found this. And I'm actually subscribing. I love history and metal detecting.
It's crazy to think of the story behind each item... who wore it or who used it. And, finding so many German and Soviet items together, they must have fought and died right there. I would be scared of finding human remains.
Iam german it means Der deutschen Mutter is the German mother
And im canadien
9:18 it says "Der deutschen Mutter" "For the German mother" (more or less) it was a badge for mothers who had many children. So either a soldier carried that of his mother or she was killed there or lost it.. who knows. Looks awesome though.
mothers werent in the army fighting on a battlefield so im guessing a soldier was carrying it or the most logical thing is they planted it there
@@shinski8114 You know that refugees (actual ones back then) where killed during their flight from the red army right? But yeah I think it was on a soldier or someone wanted to get rid of things that had swastikas on it before the russkies came knocking.

The quality of the steel razor and German mothers cross is amazing These videos are brilliant and the fact you put old footage to show what weapons in use
why all Cross of Honor of the German Mother medals have the same date set behind?
Probally the day they gave them was same for everyone
@@adamsiladi8414 either that or they were all manufactured in one day
I believe that the date on the back of the medal is the manufacture (most of the medals will have been made at the same time), but the medal was given out annually depending on how many children the mother had.
So interesting and so sad at the same time. Seeing that harmonica brings a tear to my eye.

They still have alot of dirt to remove and the upper receive was stamped out sheet metal.
2:11 its actually mauser kar98k cause that one was on the riffle
The Germans never used the kar98k...
The Mauser Karabiner Kar98k was the main rifle of the German army during WWII.
Bruh Moment but they did
I stand corrected
Bruh Moment that’s the most retarded thing that I’ve ever heard on a TH-cam comment. The Kar98k was one of the most produced rifle bolt action rifles out there and was used by the Wehrmacht for the ENTIRE war.
that mp 40 find was awesome. you can pass that down to your kids and their kids. one hell of a find.
