‘Absolutely excruciating’ - does Britain's dental industry need a complete overhaul?

  • We have never been known for our perfect teeth in this country - in fact, there used to be a TV programme called Britain's Worst Teeth.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But now some people have to travel hundreds of miles for dental treatment - others resort to DIY treatment, pulling out their own teeth.
A damning report by the Health and Social Care Committee says it's becoming so hard for people to get access to the dental services they need, that the entire industry needs a complete overhaul - and fast.

There is no mystery: if dentists treat patients on the NHS, they lose money because the state funding package does not cover their costs. Moreover, the NHS funded materials they would have to use are substandard and dentists hate using them, knowing that they will probably cause problems for the patients at some point.
I had two excellent dentists over the decades who just stopped doing NHS work for these reasons. Both my partner and I have had to resort to private dentistry for ages now (and we live in London).

I have a recurring abscess (due to badly executed root canal) and there is no NHS dentist anywhere round here. The last time it flared up, I called the doctor (who I have never seen in person in 4 years of being signed up) as it needs antibiotics to clear. The doctor said I must see a dentist, I explained I can't afford non-NHS dentistry, she said she couldn't do anything. No help at all. I ended up in A&E where they used to this, bless them. I live in Yorkshire and you CANNOT get an NHS dentist.
The waiting list is about 8-10 years.
Even if you put yourself on that list there is no guarantee that you will actually get seen.
You can get to see a dentist if you use the emergency number but they will send you miles away.
The dentist will also rush you and only do basic work because the money simply isn't there.
I went with BUPA one time and had to pay an amazing amount of money to get work done. All the guy did was reglue a post/crown thing (False tooth on a spike). Not even 10 mins work, £450.
Hospitals should also have a dental unit on the grounds and it should be set up to do ALL basic work.
Nothing special... Fillings, extractions and emergency work (From an accident or whatever) only.
That unit should be open to ANYONE that turns up. First come, first served.
I wouldn't mind if they charged NHS prices. I would pay that!
This would free up local dentists to be able to do regular check-ups because people will be able to pay for those.
I wonder if it would be possible for the NHS to train up dentists for a set fee (Or free?) BUT.... All trainee dentists HAVE to sign a contract to stay inside the NHS and do ONLY NHS work for X amount of time. (5 years maybe?) and be paid a reasonable amount of money by the NHS while doing it. They would then be placed in certain clinics/hospitals all around the country and would do local NHS work ONLY.
This is not an unreasonable contract because lots of industries use this method to pay for apprenticeships. Why can the medical field not do it?

This was barely enough to enable me to eat on one side of my mouth and to sleep! I was VERY fortunate to find a dentist a half hour away who agreed to take the case as I was getting near the stage of prying two wisdom teeth up with a flat head and yanking them with pliers! I am also fortunate to have avoided any unpleasant withdrawals from all of the morphine I was using in order to suppress the pain enough to function! I've found that once you have pulled the painful tooth out the gum with flushing heals within a couple of weeks. It's at this point that a wooden peg can be glued into place. A hard wood peg such as Oak or Ash works best using a two part epoxy resin to hold the wooden tooth in place. Hey presto perfect nashers. 👍

There should be a rule that post qualification, any new dentists must remain in the NHS for a period of 5 years. For continuous professional development (CPD) and to prevent exodus. Mind you, this should be the same rule for GP’s, consults and nurses. Soon as many of these professionals get qualified, they put simply their services out to tender to the highest bidder (normally private 😢). Furthermore, much of the education has been subsidised by the tax payer 🤦‍♂️

This is outrageous. I have been calling for emergency dentist and I cant get any. For private practice, I need to make a deposit first for £110 so I can make it on the list and mind you, it's not the same day. It's 5 days after. It makes us think that this dentist are greedy

There are about 12000 dental practises in the UK. The government said they 'poured in' £3 biilion into dental surgeries last year. That is about £250,000 per practice, more than enough to support NHS dentists. Moreover, why should Brexit be blamed? I have no issue with overseas dentists working in the UK with a Visa. My family were kicked out of our local NHS dentist which we attended for over 20 years. Earlier this year I had to pay over £500 for my daughter to have a tooth extracted at a private dentist, money I can ill afford. She was in a lot of pain. The whole consultancy/extraction process was done in less than 3 weeks at a private dentist Something is very wrong. Dental help is easily available, if you can afford it that is. I suspect the government have affectively done away with NHS dental treatment by stealth (it was easily available in Norfolk, where I live, before Covid). My big fear is that the NHS itself is next.

GPs and dentists need to be paid by the appointment, and each appointment needs to be paid at a rate of £10 standard charge + £2 per minute of the appointment

    • @globalist1990

The standard charge for dentists in the nhs is £25. For each visit. The government then pay on top of that. You only get it for free if you're younger than 18yo or on some benefits.

Then what would be the incentive to see more patients or work efficiently? May as we’ll see 2 patients in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, with some nice brew breaks between them

@@HCRS95 at the moment, what happens is that the GP practises are paid per patient on thier list per year.

@@HCRS95 well, I suppose the standard charge rewards seeing more patients, and the 2 pounds a minute compensates against the desire to see as many as you can without concern for quality
