  • Dentists are to be offered cash to take on new patients and given “golden hellos” to work in communities with a lack of NHS dental services, according to leaked plans.
The NHS Dental Recovery Plan was supposed to be published on Wednesday but an early version of the document was sent out to MPs of all parties accidentally.

Remember when dentists cared for people ? Now we are used to bad teeth. And pain killers

The dentists are too greedy they should care for all patients rich or poor & not based treating people on ability to pay or not !

Many treatments are delivered at a loss on the NHS by dentists. They do not get paid fee per item, and they do not get salaries. They get paid the same for 5, 8 or 10 procedures as they do for 3. This is why so few will take on new patients on the NHS , as because of their typically greater treatment needs, the practice will incur a loss to treat these patients, sometimes a very big one . The only way to make it make it work is to cross subsidise NHS care with revenues from pvt work/pvt patients
, to make up for losses incurred delivering NHS work OR leave the NHS altogether. Many pts don’t realise this, and keep assuming dentists are greedy. The Practices have operational costs to cover and if their businesses go under from insufficient revenue, the NHS won’t bail them out, but simply will take its contract back and award it to another party. The contractor is left in financial ruin. IF the NHS would pay the Dental practice for all the work patient needed rather than a flat rate, no matter how much each patient needed, and made sure the dentist got paid their fair share, and the money was not just hoarded by the owners, many of them corporate, then almost all the problems with NHS dentistry could be fixed. The funding for NHS Dentistry has stayed flat for nearly 20 yrs it’s inevitable that the system is now in disarray.

Dentist for the highest bidder now is it.
Dentists know they will still get more money doing private work.

Private dentists have more work than they can handle, so why on earth would they want to work for the NHS? As well as getting better paid they also generally have to deal with far fewer nasty patients.

Thats why this NHS system stinks. Everyone should have to have some type of health insurance to cover this bill then the dentists get paid the same no matter what patient.

It would be great if NHS dentists could also offer services on par with private practices, too. Such as working to save a tooth rather than pulling it out. I had a brief encounter with the NHS where the NHS dentist told me that, to save a tooth, I would have to pay privately. Also, how about implants and so on? Teeth are important

I spent £240 to go private. I would have paid triple to get rid of the pain. I went to my normal dentist and she said it just needed painkillers but I knew it was something more nasty. I phoned around and went to a dentist the next day appointment. He took an x- ray and said there was an abscess. I got great treatment and no more tooth ache. But at the same time my normal dentist is generally very good.

Even if you register as an NHS patient, treatment is not free unless you claim benefits, an nhs crown will cost more than £300 and likely be a limited basic version.
