    I have a 2017S and would like to convert. Trying to educate myself on best options. Most of my riding is paved or occasionally a packed trail, fire road etc. Keep hearing how a SM conversion can cover light off road and and have a lot more fun on winding paved roads. Only concern is whether or not the S front fork suspension is applicable for 17/17 rims. Also keep reading of swing arm change, rotor, sprocket, anti wobble dampening steering system etc. Then there are those that say get a basic 17/17 swap setup and all is great.
    More I watch the video I catch more detail. Great Job!

    • @madmarc
      @madmarc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you get stock 17" wheels that came off a factory DRZ400SM they will be a direct replacement to your S forks/swingarm. No need for new forks/swingarm, or anything else really. You can even keep the same rotors and sprocket. The S and SM hubs are identical. If you decide to get the oversized front rotor (310mm) like I did in my video, then you'll need an adapter. The only other things you should consider replacing for the stock SM parts are the speedo drive that attaches to the front wheel so you can get an accurate speedometer reading, and then a shorter kickstand.

    Hey mad marc,
    Haha without narration it's one of the clearer conversion vids I've watched, kudos to you mate nice work!
    Q for you: I'm researching the conversion of an Australian street legal DRZ400E to an SM using Talon Hubs. What speedo drive did you use? Did you just replace the stock 'S' speedo drive with a new stock 'SM' drive? or what did you use? If you used a stock SM drive does the speedo read correctly OK out of the box?
    Cheers,
    Richard

    • @madmarc
      @madmarc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You mean like a big Clarke or Acerbis tank? Or do you mean a tank with the air scoops integrated in them like this IMS tank? jamesfolberth.org/images/moto/2018/2018_04_15_installing_IMS_tank_Devol_radiator_guards/IMG_20180422_091609_resize.jpg
      If it uses the stock air scoops than yes they will work, but if it's like that IMS tank than I don't think so. But if you get graphics for a plastic tank make sure they are perforated so they don't bubble up. Good luck with the pimpin out!

    Beautiful conversion... what’s the front fender?

    • @madmarc
      @madmarc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! The more careful viewers may notice that the fender you see me drilling and installing at the beginning of the video is not the same one that's installed in the "reveal" at the end. The first fender in the video is the standard universal SM fender made by Acerbis that most people use on their conversions. But I didn't like it at all-- it was too short and angular. So I kept searching online til I came across a universal SM fender from Cycra, and that's what you see at the end of the video and which I ended up going with.

      Hey TJ: I got the shroud graphics on ebay, the airbox graphics from factory effex, and then factory effex also custom made me the small suzuki and 400 decals for the rear fender. I can give you more detail if you need.
