Hey JB, another nice video. I still have my 2017 RAM 3500 Limited, Mega Cab SRW Cummins Aisin. I have no fancy cameras which take more time to figure out. I would have been hitched up and gone by the time I figured out which cameras to watch. I can turn my head and look out my rear window to see my 5th wheel pin box slide onto my Reese 20K 5th wheel hitch, bam, connected and on the toad. I am pulling a 2018 3560RL Legacy Montana and it tows like a dream, all within weights. I don't really care about 'cool' looking tires, etc., as I prefer function over glitz. However, my package looks like a million bucks rolling down the road. I love your videos my friend, as you are always chasing the next best thing to come out. All the best to you and your family. Happy RVing!

Great review! Your comments are spot on with numbers and facts. Thanks for turning 90 degree comment with Reese Goosebox. I have 22 2500 AT4 6.6 gasser that I tow Jayco 30.5 CKTS 5th wheel at 11,000 lb. With B&W companion hitch set up with the extra 2" of clearance (flipped triangle brackets) I still can't turn 90 degrees. I'm sure it's due to camper design, so not all 5th wheels will allow 90 degree turn. Towing, I get 9.5 mpg at 67 mph on flat Michigan and Indiana roads (10+ mpg in Indiana due to better & smoother roads). I'm not full time, so daily driver it's a great truck and around town is 13-14, interstate at 75 mph is about 17 in good weather. Winter mpg, about 15 on the highway. I added K&N cold air intake, it makes a big difference in response and drive ability. I made a you tube video showing the dyno run from K&N, but have yet to make a driving video. When I bought the truck I was hung up on the lack of 10 speed, but have found thst to be a non issue, and actually the 6 speed better handles engine braking, if you call that an actual feature with a gas engine. Perhaps the 10 speed helps mpg. People will find out in 2024 when 10 speed in gasser becomes available.

Man I gotta say, you really are making me want to get one of these 6.6 gassers. I’m really hoping to be able to afford to get 2 trucks in the future. I really want one of these and a F350 7.3. I think you really can’t go wrong with either of the 2 trucks. Really looking at a tremor in the 350 as well. One thing I think I missed I this video was how the conventional towing number was only at 12,000lbs instead of the regular 14,500lbs. But either way it’ll pull the TT that I am currently looking at getting for my family to get into RVing. Which has a GVWR of 10k. Thanks again for all of these awesome videos man.

Thanks for the review. My 2012 2500hd is getting long in the tooth. I was planning to more or less replace it in kind. My dealer happens to be getting a 3500 SRW with otherwise the same specifications. I put a refundable deposit on it and plan to pull the trigger. Your review pretty much cements my feelings about the truck.

      @brianburns7211 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’m adding a follow up post. The 3500hd was taken delivery of. So far it is very impressive. For a regular cab, there is more room behind the seat. Also the truck is a 3500 SRW, vs. 2500, simply because that was what was available. For a very heavy duty suspension, the truck rides like it came from the Cadillac Division.

Awesome video! I’m extra excited with this one because my new truck will be delivered to the dealer tonight or in the morning. One of my friends seen it on the car carrier at a different dealer this evening!
Anyways, I want to thank you for FINALLY saying the GM trucks ride more level than Ram and Ford! I’ve been saying this for over a year now! That’s why they appear to squat more but the reality is they are very comparable to the other brands. In this case it was slightly less. Regardless though thanks for pointing this out now! That’s an awesome truck in this video. Those tires do look good and I much prefer the black 18s to the black 20s. The only downside is those tires for some reason limit the conventional towing capacity to 12,000 max, regardless if you get a diesel or a gas engine.

Something to consider when looking at gasser 6.6. We are full timers and in April 2021 we upgraded to a crossroads cameo 3975CK 5thwheel. It has a gvw of 14500 with empty pin weight of 2250 lbs. Loaded with all tanks empty pin weight is 2735. In March I started looking for a truck and wanted gas for less cost and maintenance. I preferred a 1 ton single wheel but could not find one anywhere in US. Knowing the 3/4 ton is built the same (without helper springs and 1/2" smaller rear gear), I found a loaded 2021 LT Chevy crew with 10550 gvw and 3750 payload. So the numbers work but our first trip from PA to Florida was horrible. Major bucking and 55 mpg was highest speed without white knuckles. The Francis Scott Key bridge expansion joints lifted the rear wheels off the ground at 45 mpg, I Had to slow to 25 over the bridge. I feel the camper was driving the truck instead of truck pulling the camper. The Power is not an issue. 6.6 has awesome power. After getting to Florida I called a trailer export and to make things short he said the gasser does not have enough truck weight for the camper. I immediately went online and found a 2022 GMC 3/4 At4 crew diesel amazingly at msrp. 6000 miles later and serval same exact road trips; no bucking, extreme power, smooth pulling, not as much braking pressure, and any speed I set up to 75 I'm relaxed. Hard to explain how the diesel has 500 lb less payload but handles 100 x's better. Yes 100 x's better. I also have a 16000 lb dump trailer for our business and with 6 ton of stone the gasser performed comparable just lacked diesel Torque. I would not advise gasser for a 38 to 42ft 5thwheel over 12000 gvw. Only down side is the $15000 higher price tag.

Because the diesel has 800+ pounds of weight over the front axle than the gas. So it wont buck as much since there is more weight up front. The diesel also gets a higher GVWR. The option of the AT4 make it have less.

I own this exact same truck, I took delivery on 10/16/21 and I'm very pleased with this truck.
I'm coming from a 14 GMC Sierra 1500 so to me it feels very similar but only bigger and better.
The truck is a joy to operate in every way. I've driven and towed with many different trucks over the years on my own and at work and if you plan to have a heavy trailer living on the back of this truck just get the diesel. Imo in any brand or any configuration a gasser will never haul a trailer like a diesel period. For me I don't haul everyday and the bulk of my miles are easy ones with the ability to haul whatever or plow with a real plow. For me I don't want to deal with extra maintenance, plugging in, injectors, extra noise, or hunting down the stations the have diesel fuel and most importantly 10k more.
This one I turn the key and go.
Diesel is always going to be better if truly working the truck but most people don't even need the extra torque they just want it to say that they have it.
The ride quality is really good especially with a load on.
It has plenty of power though its certainly not a tire burning machine as this is a big as heavy work truck with the interior and comfort of a Cadillac.
I put on a lot of miles on my trucks so for me I wouldn't want an overpowered engine that gets 6-8 mpg, imo the hp is set just right at a happy medium and I get between 12-15 mpg for the bulk of my driving with plenty of power.
The cab is well engineered, it's comfortable and extremely quiet which for me is a biggie to be able to really enjoy a podcast or while having an important phone call the person on the other end can't even tell I'm driving never mind driving a big as work truck. The multi-flex tailgate has been a big improvement for me over my last trucks, it's really handy. I love not having to deal with keys and I really enjoy all of the new technology from my 14 that these new trucks offer now. I put a 9'6" Fisher v-plow on mine and you can't hardly tell it's on there. The camera systems are excellent especially while hauling a trailer it gives you a birds eye view down the blind side when you are making a turn and with the front cam I can see my plow and line up perfectly while hooking up.
The crew cab has tons of space for cargo or the family.
So far I have no complaints at all, I like driving it so much I actually like going to work just so I can drive the truck lol.
I've put 5,000 miles on it so far and I have 0 complaints.

      Honestly it really varies.
I've got as high as 19 mpg but average is 13-14 mpg. I live in Maine and the hills are all connected lol. If I lived where it was flat I bet I'd getting 14-17 all the time...
Towing a normal load not maxed out it would be in the neighborhood of 8 mpg average around here.

I want to tow a 5th wheel that is about 12,200 lbs dry. 14,500 GVWR. hitch weight is 2,230. It's 42 feet long. Technically all the numbers look fine, but I don't want to be unsafe. Is this truck going to work for me to tow periodically or do I need something lighter with the gas engine? I don't want a diesel as the truck will be my daily driver 95% of the time.
Looking at a 2022 crew cab Silverado 2500 gas. Says max towing on 5th wheel is over 16,500 lbs.

Ok JB. I have been looking at getting a truck like this. Well maybe one that has the regular towing numbers of 14,500 and 16,600. But do you feel that one of these Chevy 2500HD with the 6.6 gas would tow a travel trailer with a GVWR of like 11,300lbs just fine? I know the trailer has a dry weight of 8,623 pounds. We wouldn’t really be putting a lot of stuff in the trailer. It is the East To West Silver Lake 31KBH. I really like the Ram trucks but I like the extra torque from the Chevy. If I could find one and actually afford to get it I’d love to get a F350 7.3 gas. But the Chevy has been a top contender for me for a while now.

I have that exact same truck. When you plugged the harness in it did recognize the trailer. The reason it didn't show on the screen is because you haven't built a profile for that trailer in the app yet. Notice the message on the screen say no trailer profile active. I have a profile built for my travel trailer, my boat and my utility trailer. Once you build a profile for the trailer anytime you plug a trailer up it will ask you which trailer is connected. Also note the decreased conventional towing capacity of 12K lbs. That is because it is limited due to those tires. I was not aware that having those tires would result in a decreased towing capacity, in fact those tires aren't even available on the 3500 because of that. I have the Duramax in my truck and you can imagine my disappointment when I got the truck home and checked the door sticker to find my conventional towing capacity is limited at 12K lbs. Ironically though my gooseneck/5th wheel capacity is 18,500 lbs. I started looking at the towing capacity chart in the owners manual and sure enough there is a * notation that says conventional towing capacity is limited by the off road tires. Why it doesn't affect the 5th wheel capacity is beyond me. I looked at another similarly equipped 2500 that did not have the off road tires and sure enough the conventional towing capacity of that truck matched the 5th wheel capacity of 18,500 lbs. I immediately replaced the tires and sold the Hankook tires. Now I know legally this does not increase the towing capacity by simply replacing the tires but knowing the truck is capable of much more with a proper load rated tire is peace of mind for me. I find it hard to believe in the stiff competition among the big 3 truck manufacturers that GM would install a tire that limits its towing capacity by 33%.

If a 5er is 2500 and family w/dogs is around 800, that is 3300 lbs. This truck is 3302 lbs. where does the max tongue weight come in? Am I missing something?

I just took delivery of my 22’ Cummins white/night package and I love it. However, you’re right they are sweet trucks, especially when they get that new interior.....wow. However, after owning several, I won’t do that independent front end again. The L5P is a great motor, but they are just too complicated compared to the Cummins. Love the Denali though. Hard decisions, but my mind is made up until they change that shitty front end.

From a drivetrain perspective I think it’s still tight in the used market. To jump into this over my ‘18 Ram 2500 w the 6.4 is just a nonstarter given the market. Is the 6.6 GMC gasser better than the Ford 7.3? Probably not. Is it better than the 6.4 Hemi? Maybe? The Hemi is long in the tooth. I suspect the overall value comparison is actually pretty tricky when accounting for the various year-option combos. For new trucks, I suspect this gives the 7.3 some real competition. If I was buying today, I’m not sure I’d roll with the Hemi, which is still an interesting development imo.

Gas vs diesel depends on how you plan to travel. If you plan on doing a lot of traveling then go diesel but if you plan on doing trips within a couple hours and just doing weekend trips a few times a year, a gas would be fine. You may also have to think about where you live or plan to travel to because if you plan on going up/down grades, this may sway you to a diesel 👍🏾

I can replace this gas motor for that price and guys that have made this switch before me are now over 300k miles on these 6.4 with ONLY regular maintenance. After owning the exact same truck but GMC version and an AT4 for 2 months now, I'm not impressed at all with the pulling power of the 6.6 gas engine. I bought mine new and I was expecting much more. These trucks don't have jack for power down low. You have to rev the hell out of them and I only tow a 7x16 enclosed cargo trailer with mine every day with a max gross weight of only 7k lbs. I've never owned any truck that when towing that same trailer have to rev up to 4,000-4,500 rpms just to go up a very small incline say around 3 percent grade. I've owned 16 different pickup trucks in the past 25 years and this by far is the weakest 2500 gas truck that I've ever towed with. My old 6.0 2500 with 4.10's would destroy this new gas 6.6 in towing. The new 10spd gm transmissions are clunky shifting and even more clunky when shifting down into 1st gear again. I know. I also own a 2021 Sierra 1500 with the 6.2 and the 10speed. That truck sucks at towing as well mainly because of the only available 3.23 rear axle. Also the brakes are garbage on my 22 Sierra 2500. I've never had to press the brakes so hard on a brand new 2500 truck in my life. GM needs to simply add a real towing gear to these current 6 speed transmissions in the 2500. 4.10 would be perfect. And they need to re-tune the 6.6 engines to give more power under 3k rpms. That would make these 2500's much better. Adding the 10spd trans won't do it. It needs more rear axle ratio as well. 3.73 isn't enough.
