Appreciate the real life gas HD towing experience. Everyone tries to push people to the diesel and obviously it's a superior power train but there are a lot of us that just don't need it. Some people only tow occasionally and use their truck for short daily trips - which isn't great for a diesel. Thanks again!

Everyone complains about the premium for a diesel but they seem to forget how much better resale is when you sell it. You definitely get it back when you sell the truck. The price difference only matters if you keep the truck till its completely shot. I tow for my job, I put 100,000 miles on every 2 years and trade it in for a new diesel it's incredible how much value the diesel holds.

This has nothing to do with it being a diesel though. I was just shopping used trucks what is a 10k premium on diesel new adds about 2-3k 3-4 years old (I was shopping 2017s)

@@jaynen hope you have been looking around, kbb and edmunds are easy quick sites. They are bringing a premium above book value at our dealerships. Duramax is costly upfront and during ownership with maintenance. But once you own one you'll never ever go back. My 2028 dursmsx vs the new 6.6 gas was a complete let down. @@dtlusk24 Everything is bringing above book value. I just spent 2-3 months shopping for 2017+ powerstroke crew cab lariats with under 100k miles. And at the same time was looking at 3500 duramax chevy's. If I had gone chevy I would have gone duramax because chevy had 5k off while ford had no discounts on superdutys here is a link to what I mean, searching nationally. This is a powerstroke just under 100k lariat ultimate with adaptive cruise. www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=568266457&clickType=myATCsavedcar 48k the same truck in gas right now is 45k but tends to be lower mileage than the diesels note 45k is the cheapest listed on autotrader nationwide for a F350 4x4 2017 to new crewcab. I love the diesels and if I could get one on a discount I would buy that over a gas, but if you are paying full price for the diesel upgrade the resale value does not "make it worth it" unless you think paying 10k for something worth 5k is a good deal.

We've got the 2020 3500 SRW with the 6.6L and 3.73s. Crew cab, long bed LTZ +Z71+Plow prep... Pulling a 5 horse Gooseneck (16,250 GVWR on the trailer) that's about 7,700lb empty with a single 1,200lb horse in it, our best average so far has been 10.6 MPG with the trailer and 19.2 MPG empty. Shout out from Western NY. I have bought vehicles from Dave Hallman Chevy in Erie. Always has been a good experience. This summer I bought a 2020 Silverado 2500HD LT Crew Cab model with the L5P Duramax to tow my Grand Design 5th Wheel. Love the truck. Had to buy it in Buffalo though and had to wait for it to be delivered. It was nearly impossible to find new trucks. The truck I bought was ordered by the dealer in January and wasn't delivered until July. I bought it the day it arrived after several months of emails back and forth with the salesman and waiting for it to be located and finally delivered. It sat in a railroad car for several months! Thank you Covid!!!!! All in all it was a good experience but it sure was a different way to do business! Keep up the great videos!

I just picked up my 2020 with a 6.6 gas engine at the end of August. In mid October we took it on an approximate 5,400 mile road trip. Florida to North Dakota and back. The truck had a topper over the bed and did not pull a trailer. Also, it had almost 4,500 miles on it when we started the trip. The onboard computer showed that we got 15.6 mpg for the entire trip which was mostly Interstate driving and slow tourist type stuff. Temps from 89 degrees in Florida to 17 degrees one morning in Rapid City, SD. I am glad I bought this truck and would do it again.

Not only does the new 6.6L gas blow away the old 6.0L, it makes as much torque at just 1000rpm as the old 8.1L gas engine(over 300lb-ft). Its peak torque is also higher than the 8.1L, 464 vs 455.

Good factual review 👍. I also have a newer 2020 6.6L (gas) Chevy 2500, mine being a Double Cab 4x4 Z71 LT with added options (AutoTrac, etc.) here in Canada. First, I love it; solid...like a Rock and when pulling our 31’ Toy Hauler weighing 7500 lbs. empty. When pulling it in 2020, we had similar fuel mileage as you did (~7.5 us mpg / 31 L/100km). Essentially, 26-31L/100km. Good power = good enough; I’m not hauling +24,000 lbs. or hauling for a living where it makes sense to spend $10K more for a diesel. Based on my needs and babying this truck for the next 2-300k km, I won’t worry about more expensive oil changes, DEF or diesel quality issues (winter spec. vs. summer spec. Or supplier quality) or other related engine expenses, especially when it’s off warranty. It’s an updated modern (direct injection, VVT, etc.) engine, yet simply naturally aspirated (no turbos to deal with over time) with as much power as a diesel did not even 20 years ago. Oh, and when empty, on the highway I’ll typically get 15-16 us mpg (14.7-15.5 L/100km / 18-19 mpg imperial) - as good as some not so old half tons I had and much much better than my ‘72 Chevy 1/2 ton 4 Barrel I once owned. Winter fuel mileage (empty/no load) is always worse of course, like 13-15 us mpg or 15-18 L/100km) and that includes some idling.

7.4 mpg... That's what my 8.1L/Allison gets. Especially when there are high winds and stop/go town driving. I have seen my towing mileage teeter on 9.5-10 mpg, but that's if I can get on a flat interstate and maintain one speed for hours on end, typically with cruise set.
My response to the gas vs. diesel argument is that if you only tow a handful of times a month, or less, the diesel is probably overkill. If you're towing a handful of times a week, get the diesel. If a majority of your towing is short, local trips the gas might be for you. If you do a lot of long distance towing, look into a diesel.

Point is if you don’t need or own a heavy duty yourself, does it matter to you? Heavy duties burn fuel to operate, period. Many half tons not so long ago burned just as much fuel as this modern naturally aspirated engine and the Toyota Tundra 5.7L burns virtually the same now. If one owns a diesel and there are places for that (i.e. hauling for a living or young and want to impress people yet not fooling everyone), then there’s added expenses with diesels which a simple gasoline engine avoids. And, if one wishes for but really can’t afford a heavy duty, then don’t own one.

@@marcnelson2645 it’s all good at my end here Marc. Thanks for your reply as well. I’m accepting of my fuel mileage (as good as some not so old 1/2 tons and much more powerful and larger payload capability too). I like the simplicity that comes with gas engines and finding quality gasoline. I work in the oil & gas industry and directly with refineries and even more directly with diesel production units and know the issues that include consistent quality. By comparison, gasoline is a cleaner more refined product; compare ingesting filtered vodka (gasoline) to low-medium quality rum. I’m aware of the additional costs to diesel DEF and maintenance issues that can arise. Also, my gas engine weighs less and reduces negative impact on front end components, reducing frequency of repair, no matter what brand one is talking about. And my box payload is more than a diesel because of overall truck weight.

I agree we don’t need lower gears based on 7th through 10th gear… I would still say I want a lower rear end ratio to help get the load moving… Everything is so geared toward fuel economy… We are sacrificing towing performance. These trucks takeoff in second gear unless you’re in tow haul mode. I’d still like to see a 4.10 rear axle mated to the 10 speed automatic to help get the load moving.

Another great detailed video. Great work Joe. I’m on the fence with the 6.6 /6 speed. I spec and purchase our trucks at work, and I have been loyal to GM trucks because of the 6.0 Lq4/L96 reliability. We run our trucks literally 40 hrs a week a fleet of 8-11 trucks 5 days a week. I have one half ton with a 5.3 GDI ,I do not like that truck and will never buy another, that truck was partially responsible for me personally buying a Ford.I was hoping GM would go to the bigger displacement engine but keep the port injectors because the GDI only systems really idle like crap after about 2000 hrs , and load up the intake valves with carbon deposits. For our application I was happy with the performance of the L96 for our pickups, our 3500 dump trucks I would like a little more power, our crew cab 4x4 3500 dump tows a 6k single axle trailer w a 3500 lb asphalt roller every day , that truck could use some more power and torque ... I hate to say it but Ford has my attention with the 7.3/10 speed ESP for the dually and 450/550 applications . GM still has no competition for them, and the new 5500 straight frame sits too high to be getting in and out of all day long, I believe it’s also diesel only which wouldn’t work for us since our trucks never leave town they would suffer emissions issues like our class 8 trucks do constantly.

The Ford 7.3 gas and the Ram 6.4 Hemi are not any better on fuel. This truck is excellent for all around use and not being a diesel. What’s the cost of maintenance on a semi truck? How much does it cost to replace the tires? How much does an oil change cost? How about replace worn out suspension components? Last time I checked one tire for a semi truck is about the cost of four tires for this Chevy Silverado 2500.

With truck inventory being so low, is this a good time to be buying a truck ? I haven’t seen any companies with the 0% financing deals anymore. Do you feel a consumer has a good edge to get deals right now or are dealerships more stubborn on their pricing since the low inventory

    • @truckguyjoe
      @truckguyjoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Supply vs Demand...dealer's are way understocked with inventory, which has created urgency to grab one while you can. Our dealership is sold out of diesel pickups, Trail Boss, and most of our commercial inventory has been depleted. Combine the lack of inventory with the fact that trucks are still selling well, the manufacturer's are able to keep numbers up without offering huge rebates or special finance programs. You're right...dealer's don't have to given them away with huge dealer discounts under invoice. We have customers calling from out of state, and dealers calling from all over trying to swap inventory with us. If you buy a truck now, you will pay more...but you'll have a truck. The alternative is wait for a 2021 to land, which will cost more and probably have $0 incentives.

      Hello Doug!
From what I have seen, the new 6.6 gas engine that was introduced in 2020 with the redesign of the Silverado 2500/3500 has been a reliable engine. I have several customers with Express vans, and Silverado that have exceeded 100,000 miles. One of the big concerns was the direct injection and would carbon buildup be an issue. My answer is this… I would be comfortable towing a travel trailer across the country with a 6.6 Chevy. I think the Ford 6.2 is also a proven platform… I think the jury may still be out for the 7.3.
The Chevy you see in this video, I drove for about 10,000 miles and towed with it extensively using my gooseneck. I think it performed very well considering the 3.73 rear end. But of course a 4.10, would obviously help it. We all seem to want a little more out of our trucks… That might be the missing link… I don’t necessarily think it needs the 10 speed automatic… I think the 6 speed did a fine job.

Slowly but surely the manufacturers are increasing the gross vehicle weight on these trucks. You can still special order a 2500 at 10,000 pounds.

I used to drive a 1990 gmc 2500 and the gvwr was 8000lbs if i recall, but it weighed much less than these new trucks so the payload numbers were close. You still cant go on certain roads if your over 10k so in the eyes of at least this state they would consider anything over a 1 ton

Also… Diesels have extremely unreliable and sophisticated emission systems… One little hiccup and it will leave you stranded in limp mode. Whether it fails a DEF quality test because of a faulty NOx sensor, or a clogged DEF injector… I like the fact that the gasoline engine does not have all of these extra items… Sure the diesel might get there faster… But the gas won’t be side lined with faulty emissions components

I’ve owned diesel trucks since 1999, and I’ve been selling new Chevy’s since 2011. Why do you think the majority of ambulance companies no longer buy diesel chassis? why do you think the majority of municipalities are buying Ford F550s with the 7.3 gas engine? The majority of customers that are pulling trailers do not need the tow rating of a diesel. The gas engine is $10,000 less… And will not give you as much trouble as far as warranty claims.
