    Great video. I've never seen anyone do the side by side comparison to this level. It is great for people to see what works for their application, without bias. Love these videos. I don't tow a lot, so I ended up with Ram 1500 with 3.92. I got a great daily driver, and I am also confident that I can tow a full size truck on a car hauler without issue. If I was towing a fifth wheel or large box trailer as you do, I would have gone 3/4 or 1 ton. After seeing hours and hours of your tow videos, I am confident I got the right set up for me and the wife. Thank you!

    As far as your breaks not working right away, I’ve had the same issue. My bumper pull trailer is finicky with my new 24 GMC but my boat is fine. I’ve never had any issue with my trailer with any other truck as I’ve tested it with others having no issues. It will randomly come back on when even stopped at a light not moving then stay on for the remainder of the trip. It’s odd. The only thing I can think of is either some software issue or just on some trailer plugs, the truck plug doesn’t make a great connection. Plan on going to a different type of trailer/truck magnetic plug.

I ordered the truck with the gas engine and the salesperson was shocked I didn’t want the diesel… here is what I explained to them… my wife works from home so I am able to drive her suv back and forth from my work (and I drive transport for a living and very familiar with diesels) We have a large 5th wheel trailer that we tow a couple times a month from April-May until September-October. And we typically travel 1-2 hours away to a campsite. Long story short, our gas engine truck uses more fuel than a diesel would, but very small margin for the distance we travel. • @matthewanderson9912
    @matthewanderson9912 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

    Nice video. You know I have essentially the same trailer and I have had a 2020 Duramax and now have a 2022 6.6 gas. Both similar configurations (2500 crew cab, 4wd, short bed with 20s). Over the course of a racing trip (between 180-260 miles depending on which track I go to) my diesel would always get 10.4-10.7 mpg. My gas truck always gets between 8.2-8.6 mpg. The longer trip is a much harder pull with several grades and it’s about half the elevation that you’re at (stays at 2,000’ for half the trip and never is below 1,000’). The shorter trip is a much easier pull with a lot better roads and once I get 15 or so miles away from my house drops below 1,000’ of elevation. But with that said the fuel mileage never really improved from one trip over the other.
    So over the course of an actual trip, you can expect about 2 mpg better out of the diesel, grades or otherwise. So I’m not surprised by this outcome. I also want to say I’d love to see you do this same test with your fifth wheel and the gas truck and see the mpg results. I know you have pulled it but it was up that grade and I don’t remember the fuel mileage. But I’d like to see if there’s a difference between the fifth wheel and the bumper pull. Everything always points to the fifth wheel will get better fuel mileage.

    • @bobbythomas6520
      @bobbythomas6520 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well just thinking about it logically it should be able to tow it better, the fifth wheel offers the truck more leverage to pull as well as put the weight in a different spot. It should get better MPG as well as pull better

    • @matthewanderson9912
      @matthewanderson9912 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bobbythomas6520 yeah. That and the way the air goes over the truck and the fifth wheel I think would provide better (or less I guess) wind drag. With the bumper pull the air is going over the truck like normal and off the back and then slamming into the trailer. So even though it’s 3’ or so shorter I think this is playing a roll in fuel mileage too.

    • @BigBirdNest
      @BigBirdNest 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I’ve got a 2022 Ram 3500 6.4 Hemi. Used to have a 37’ bumper pull travel trailer gvwr 10,000lbs, 11’6” high, and towed from Kingston Ontario out to PEI and towed from Kingston Ontario to Orlando florida. Averaged 26-28 L/100km both trips (approximately 8.5-9MPG) and now I have a 40’ fifth wheel, gvwr 16,500lbs, and stands 13’5” high. Hauled it from Kingston Ontario to orange beach Alabama and back and averaged 33L/100km (7mpg) I will without a doubt agree the fifth wheel tows so much better and agree that aerodynamics should help out the fifth wheel, but the height still adds to the resistance and of course the weight is a factor as well

    • @matthewanderson9912
      @matthewanderson9912 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BigBirdNest it’s something that I can see making sense considering the fifth wheel is up in the truck bed and that probably lets air go over it better than a bumper pull does. It would seem the air would just slam the front of a bumper pull when it comes off the trucks tailgate.
      I’d like to see a test of it with similar trailers.

  • @gcslade
    @gcslade 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    If you had done the same test up over Parleys canyon (6% grade) and back, the results would have clearly leaned more toward the Diesel. The route you took on the test is relatively flat and not a real good test of the diesel's torque and engine braking. Diesel torque always prevails for towing heavy on steep accents and decants. The above said, the gas HD is very impressive and something that definitely should be considered if not towing regularly in mountainous areas or high altitudes. In my case, I tow a heavy 5th wheel toy hauler; the diesel is the right choice for me.

    • @SliderFury1
      @SliderFury1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Yeah, see, large 5th wheel that's ALSO a toy hauler? Diesel or bust.
      But for the vast majority of us weekend warriors (with maybe one or two longer trips a year) and that also use our trucks as our daily, or at least occasional family/grocery hauler, gas makes so much more sense.
      A diesel for us would be like getting a Corvette for your daily commute. You'll certainly get there faster (and in style) but it's complete overkill.

If your trailer has some sort of charging system(solar panel) etc, it will back feed to the brake control module unit and that’s why we get the check trailer warning, brake disconnect warnings. Great video & comparison , however for those of us looking to purchase a diesel or gas 1 ton truck to pull a trailer only maybe a dozen times a year for Boondocking & then use it for our daily driver what would your recommendation be concerning Quality, reliability & routine maintenance ? ? After watching many “You Tube “ videos of the Ford gas ⛽️ New Godzilla’s with engine & transmissions issues & the issues with diesel emissions on all new trucks I am leaning toward a gas engine with reliable transmission like the Allison . Spending 70-100 k on a new or few years older truck I want something that’s reliable , both from an engine standpoint & transmission. Gas mileage is important but I am not buying a one ton truck 🛻 for fuel savings , more for reliability & safety on towing up & down these passes of Colorado & out west . I tend to keep my vehicles forever , have a 1995 Toyota Landcuiser with 250,00 Miles but can only tow 5,000 lbs . Would buy a HD Toyota Truck if they ever built one . Thx again , luv your info & videos & content. 👍⚾️

      Mountains or flat? I have a 2017 6.4 HD RAM. My 5th wheel is about 13K it does great except for when pulling big grades mpg wise. Still has adequate power but pulls fuel down to 2-4 mpg if I try and maintain 60-65 going through V.W. & Virginia on Rt 77. Another issue is if you get a slow vehicle merging and you have to brake (urban traffic etc.) it takes you longer to recover speed and you spend fuel there. But I use the truck for daily driver farm work and it's much better than a diesel for that so there are trade offs. If I had a bigger trailer or spent more time with my RV or went out West I'd probably replace it with a Diesel. But the gasser has several advantages as a daily driver truck I'd hate to lose

      You know I thought all of that too when I had my 2020 L5P Duramax but essentially 2 mpg better is all it will do over what my current 6.6 L8T gas truck gets. Same trailer, same routes and me driving.
      My roads on a 260ish mile round trip from East Kentucky to East Tennessee are like a roller coaster and especially the first 50ish miles. There’s several 6 and 7% grades and one 8%. My diesel got 10.4-10.7 mpg and my gas truck gets 8.2-8.6. Again, same everything. And my Duramax absolutely sucked DEF when it was towing. Hardly used it empty though.

      And how many DPFs, DEF tanks, EGR, SCR, check engine lights will the diesel have in 300k? I would be much more confident with a gasser out of warranty than a diesel any day. • @matthewanderson9912
      @matthewanderson9912 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      That’s just simply not true. I work in the rail industry and all of our “small” trucks are 3/4 or 1 ton gas SRW gas trucks and they all make it over 200k before any real engine problems. And a lot of times it’s closer to 300k.
      By comparison our main “section truck” with a GVWR of about 60,000 or 66,000 pounds (can’t remember right off) has a Cummins engine. It’s a 2019 model truck with 82,000 miles and it has twice stranded us for DEF issues. DEF tank level sensor and DEF quality sensor. Both times the truck derated and would not go 5 mph and had to be towed (this is a big truck too mind you, over 30’ long) to a dealer where we were without it for a week in both cases.
      So let’s not act like diesels are going to go 300k miles when being worked. I’m not a diesel hater and they are far superior for hauling and towing heavy but with the government mandated emissions garbage they are woefully unreliable.

    Okay I can see you guys really don't know what you're talkin about put them trucks side-by-side and see how big of a difference 2 seconds are when towing getting on the on-ramp it would make a big difference as well lol and you guys are running flat ground put them trucks on a grade preferably 15% and listen how you gasoline truck screams and run through gas shit I can take a Tacoma and Tow 10,000 lb on a flat ground and criticize the better truck for being 2 seconds fastest LOL I don't know if you know but that's about six to seven car lengths not to back the gas trucks too bad they have a time and place though I have gas trucks and diesel trucks and when it's time for real work I jump in a diesel oh and I almost forgot and you brought this up gas trucks do run higher RPMs but at the same time if you're going to work this truck you will want it to last a long time gasoline engines have a lifespan up 252 300,000 miles will be greatly reduce if you're at higher RPMs all the time Towing it will be luckily to get 150,000 out of a gasoline engine that is Towing all the time and this is why diesel trucks are better they running low RPMs therefore the engine last longer because they not working as hard but still has enough torque to get the job done and that little remark that you said if we were at sea level that gasoline truck will perform better well that goes both ways if that diesel truck was at sea level the turbos would have thicker air to compress which will mean it will get better fuel economy and horsepower as well

    • @matthewanderson9912
      @matthewanderson9912 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I would agree with you about the 2 seconds if it were an actual drag race but in normal driving that’s nothing. If you’re cutting it that close while merging traffic then you need to yield to the flow of traffic and wait for a better opening lol.
      Also the diesel would perform better at sea level too but the NA engine is going to perform a lot better at sea level than at nearly 5,000’. The turbo is compensating for the less air density as compared to the NA motor.
      Longevity is a non issue now. There’s no modern diesel that’s going to run for 200,000-250,000 miles without major emissions problems (probably would happen twice in that amount of miles). The gas trucks will make it to 200,000 just fine. The government has ruined the diesels. You can delete them but that’s getting harder to do with the EPA really cracking down on that. And the L5P it’s self is very expensive to delete because you have to buy a slave computer for it since the factory ecms are locked. I’ve heard prices as much as $8,000 to delete.
      Both trucks have their place and both will do what 90% of the guys using them for need them to do. 7% grade is the max allowable on an Interstate highway. I know US highways and state roads will vary but wow, a 15% grade on a highway? 10% is the most I’ve ever seen and it was on a 2 lane that had a passing lane over the mountain. I don’t think that big rigs could even pull a 15% at any reasonable speed. Around here they can only do about 25 mph on 6 and 7% grades.
