the one grinch quote that makes me cry like a baby was the "It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags. And he puzzled, and puzzled, until his puzzler was sore. Then the grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if perhaps Christmas means a little bit more."

That, and the part where all the Whos still start singing make me cry. Because to me, Christmas isn't about religion, nor is it about commercialism and stuff. Christmas doesn't need gifts and trees, those are just traditions that help people enjoy the holiday and communicate the true meaning of Christmas: unity. Christmas means something different to everyone, of course, but to me it's about people coming together in happiness, respect, and appreciation for each other, regardless of any differences they may have.
That's why the Christmas Truce of 1914 is still one of my favorite, most inspiring historical moments ever. When many, many people on opposing sides of the First World War decided to stop fighting and stop trying to kill each other for a day, and instead cross No Man's Land to shake hands, tell stories, play ball, and have a smoke together. All because it was Christmas Day. A lot of them had to be pulled out and relocated the next day because they had formed a bond and no longer wanted to fight each other.
We are all people, and we all have our differences. But just for one day, we can all come together and hold hands in the spirit of the holidays, without prejudice or hate. That's why Christmas is, and probably always will be my favorite holiday.

When I was a kid I was obsessed with that movie. I would always compare myself to Matilda and she was my hero.

I always dreamed about having a Miss Honey in my life as a kid.
It's funny, my mom looked/acted exactly like the principal when I was a kid. To the point where if you would have told me she played the roll, I would've believed you.
My mom is a narcissist, and is just controlling, manipulative and angry. I always loved the scene where the kids chase her out of the school at the end of the movie.
Fun fact: the guy who sings "you're a mean one" was the original voice actor for Tony the Tiger, so now just imagine Tony the Tiger everytime you hear it lol

In case you were curious, his name is Thurle Ravenscroft. He had a ton of roles over his decades of voice work, many of which were uncredited. But his timbre is unmistakable :)

I actually really appreciate that y'all considered the 'noisy neighbour' aspect and how that affected the Grinch. I have severe misophonia and the people I live with are extremely inconsiderate of that. As a result, I have panic attacks often and my quality of life is garbage. In this context, it's not so bad because it's one day in the year and they celebrate mainly in the day, whereas the people I room with make noise from early in the morning to really late at night, seven days a week. That being said, it does highlight that perhaps your grumpy neighbours that 'ruin your fun' are just people with their own needs.
I would say tho that the "grumpy neighbor" can be extremely unreasonable in the amount of quiet they demand. I had a neighbor who called the park management because i had a birthday party in my own yard and the child guests were being loud (I guess) We weren't playing music at all let alone blasting it, and it was from like 2-5 or something... the only thing that was slightly noisy were My 7 and 5 year old cousins playing outside and possibly being slightly rambunctious. SERIOUSLY?! If you have such an issue with noise that you can't handle 2 children playing outside for 3 hours for one day do everyone including yourself a favor and go move to a cabin in the middle of nowhere.
In our current economy, is it even guaranteed that they can afford to move?

As someone with misophonia too i completely understand, and it has also further ruined my relationships with people due to how spiteful and anxious it makes me

Please do it. I argue it's better than the original in parts. It builds on what this starts. It's not just the Grinch who learns the lesson, it's the citizens of whoville too. I love the acting and the way it comes across. How can you not feel. "I just wanted everybody to be together for Christmas." And the whole scene where Cindy Lu's father stands up for her against the mayor and slaps the message of the film in his face. And the ending where she tells the Grinch his cheek is warm before singing. Like, how can you not feel at that? 😢
Interestingly enough, Dr Seuss wrote the grinch as commentary against capitalism and the commercialization of the holidays.

I work retail and I've came to hate Christmas, due to the materialism, how entitled people act, and to put on the 'Christmas spirit' i don't have at work. I have become the figurative Grinch and it kinda helps to remind me that it isn't all about that.

I feel ya, it's already starting too. The screaming children, adult tantrums and the GLITTER. It helps to pick out the nice customers day to day, and realize that everyone's stressed, even more this year.
That said, I do wear my 'Bah Humbug' sweater with a little too much pride on ugly sweater day.

Me too but from other reasons. I have a lot of bad memories from past Christmas evenings so now I came to really hate it. I freak out when the girls in my class start singing Christmas songs (like they start from November wtf?) But I’ve tried (well I still try and kinda fail but anyway) to accept the fact that I have these memories and not all people should be affected from it. People can enjoy whatever the fuck they want, right?
Man that sucks. I always try to be nice to retail workers, but I will especially this year. People really need to realize that retail workers are people too, even if you don’t see them later.
Reasons people love How the Grinch Stole Christmas:
1) It's Dr. Seuss. Our parents read his books to many of us when we were small, and they were among the first books we read by ourselves. His poetry was distinctive, as were his illustrations, and he knew how to make things easy to read without being dull. We associate him with happy parts of our childhoods.
2) The Grinch himself is sort of funny. So is the song. BTW, the singer was Thurl Ravenscroft, who was the original voice of Tony the Tiger in the Frosted Flakes commercials ("They're Grrrrrrrreat!").
3) Even in 1966 people complained about the commercialization of Christmas. The story makes it clear (without an explicit religious message) that Christmas isn't about material things. It's a good message, not just for children but for everyone.
I will add because of Chuck Jones, the director. He came from the world of Looney Tunes and his visual style and humor add a lot too it. Dr Seuss wrote the lyrics for the Grinch song.

When it came out in theaters, I went to see it twice in one day cause I loved it so much lol
“Maybe my perception isn’t the reality, it’s just a perception”. That singlehandedly sums up the overarching message/theme of the special, and I think it’s the key to why the special has remained a timeless favorite for so many throughout the years. It’s a mainstay for a reason ❤

Fun fact: This story is something Dr. Seuss based on himself-- he was 53 at the time and very cranky over the excitement and noise of Christmas (hence the line "Why for 53 years I've put up with it now"). But he came around and realized the sentimentality behind it, so he wrote a book about the lesson he learned. Dr. Seuss was the grinch.

I love it because of the fact that acceptance, forgiveness, and welcome are the morals of the story. Also, I LOVE Max the dog! You almost had to think the Grinch had some good in him because Max seemed to love him.
Yeah, we don't really know much about the Grinch outside of the Christmas season. He might be a laugh riot around Halloween.
So I'm a fan of the Jim Carey version, while not particularly a fan of most of Jim Carey's film work or that cinematic style of humor. When I watch movies more than once, I'm always thinking about the background stuff that's not on the screen, e.g. the Grinch gets everything through the trash, including the dog, who he kept, and didn't eat or let die; baby Grinch's basic needs are completely failed that first night in the tree, in the cold, completely alone. I'm on board with the consumer focused Whoville as a jab at a modern audience.

Love that film litterly made my childhood
I noticed that the Grinch was a bit more abusive to Max in the 1966 cartoon than in the 2000 movie. In the original he seemed to take his anger about the Whos towards his dog. He didn't in the 2000 movie. The worst that the Grinch did to Max in the movie was that Max was forced to have Mayor May Who kiss his butt!
Duuuuude Thankyou for bringing up Carrey’s. I also think this film is one of the final survivors of the CGI war. I loooooove the theatrical props, prosthetics, set. They really made a production and stayed off the green screen. Prob one of the last movies of its kind to do so!
I remember watching this movie when I was younger and almost crying because of the way the Grich treated Max. He was nothing but loving and supportive and deserved better. I don't even think he got an apology, poor puppy
As a kid I wasn't paying much attention to that part. But now as an adult I just feel bad for Max. Especially when the Grinch made him pull that sleigh filled with the Christmas decorations!
But he saved the dog at the end and the dog saved him. Max is the prime example of unconditional love.
I was watching the Jim Carey version with a friend once and they pointed out that Max was probably a discarded Christmas gift, since most of their gifts end up at the dump with the grinch. Otherwise where did he get Max and why would he keep him?
@carlee - In the newest Cumberbatch version, Max is not treated quite as badly, though there is still lots of room for improvement.
I think the Jim Carrey Grinch has a fantastic message about materialism. "I want a pony so I can ride it twice, get bored, and sell it to make glue!"
Also the scene where he rips the tablecloth out from under all the stuff and then comes back and knocks it off is like Napoleon Dynamite style comedy 🤣
The one lesson in this movie that stands out the most (at least for me) is "people can change. They just have to have the chance to do so." The original Grinch movie is one of the few Christmas movies that conveys this lesson without truly forcing it. Yes the movie revolves around the main character changing to be a better "person" but the change is allowed to occur naturally, instead of having the change being brought on by a plot device that the film makers threw in simply for the sake of moving the story forward a bit more quickly. Which is something that I absolutely love.
Personally, I thought this movie was about my FIL, who, every year, got drunk and waved the carving knife around while singing " We wish you a merry horse $###..." to his terrified children. After all, why should anyone be merry and joyful if I can't? It's all about me!!!" Right?

This whole theme of the Whos coming together Christmas moring despite not having presents and ornaments is the one gripe I have with Klaus from Netflix, they had the chance to show growth in the adults by having them console their children for not getting presents and maybe even encourage their kids to gift some of the toys they had gotten before to their neighbors... Genuine growth and maturity... and they blew it... I still love everything else about that movie, though...

Since the movie is for kids, I think its cool that they show mature kids. Like hey, this an example of a child who is still grateful for what they have, be like that. Not some scene of Calliou like kids throwing a tantrum- that would be annoying.
As someone who is non-Christain and born outside of America, Christmas was never a big deal. I first found out about How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2nd grade and every time I watch it, it still makes me cry. It's just so wholesome. It shows the true values of the holidays without ever being preachy compared to something like A Christmas Carol.

@@Stettafire it's not preachy. It's literally depicting a culture of people and era in time where Christianity was the dominant religion and belief. And everyone prayed. The movie doesn't tell you you Have to be Christian. And it's literally 2 or 3 scenes. Out of an entire novel/movies.

Alan is surprised there are fans of the live action Grinch and I'm shocked that there are people who aren't. If I want to watch Grinch, that's the version I'm watching, I wouldn't even consider watching either of the other versions. This version is the one I grew up with first but that's the one I think of as the classic and true version
If you do something about the Grinch and Max's relationship, don't forget to include "Halloween is Grinch Night" as part of your analysis!

To answer your question: everyone feels like an outlier. The social creatures we are, we want to be included. Universal representation there.
At the same time, everyone loves a redemption story. If the Grinch who did really bad things and we're told is inherently evil can be redeemed and forgiven, then it must be possible for us to be redeemed and forgiven as well.
Also "Mean One" is a killer song.
Lol "If people took the time out to understand each other", also "People like the Jim Carrey version of the Grinch?" Sir, he needed torture training to play the Grinch, we respect that movie, at the very least around these parts.

I thought Jim Carrey's Grinch held the same message very well, and I deffo related to his character as someone who was ostracized as a child, even from my friends eventually.
To be fair, just because Alan questioned the existence of a fan base of the 2000 film doesn’t mean he is incapable of understanding it.
I've always loved the music, Boris Karloff's narration and mood creation. And his personification of the Grinch. And Thurl Ravenscroft's bass voice. And the off-key singing of one who.
The whole story is a version of _A Christmas Carol_ without the ghosts: redemption and the beauty of a change of heart.
And if course, Dr. Seuss.

_A Christmas Carol_ (I almost said _A Christmas Story!_ ) has been done and redone through the ages from direct retellings to subtler retellings like the Grinch. It's a timeless story.

I simply thought it was a thematic thing, where original characters were going through the Dickens story in another way
So, George is an original character who is being taken on this past through future journey by Clarence the Angel instead of having three ghosts showing him different parts of his life.
Plus, George isn't in the time stream we're being shown because he wasn't born, per his wish. He's just seeing how important One Good Person makes in the lives around them because he can't see it while he's busy living said life.
So, as you see, I was viewing it from the thematic point of view instead of a straight alignment with the familiar Dickens story.
But, I really like your idea, too

@Naomi tehe A sensory processing disorder causes your brain to not process sensory input correctly, which mostly means you have a bunch of hyper- or hyposensetivities. One of the most noticable symptoms is a hypersensetivity to sound. In this sepecific example the whos don't experience their noise level as troublesome, even the dog doesn't seem to be all that bothered by it, yet the grinch's brain can't filter that input correctly and to him it feels like they are banging his head instead of the drums. (I really hope this makes sense and isn't to simplyfied.)
I just wanted to share my 2 cents about Alan's question as to why the Grinch has stood the test of time so well. I think a big part of it is definitely how universal it is. Regardless who you are and where you came from, the sentiment can translate seamlessly. What you perceive of something isn't how it always is and as the guys said so well, giving someone who loves that thing the patience and respect to understand from their perspective and learn from it can really make all the difference.
Another part I believe and in the spirit of Christmas is just how materialistic things (like what the Grinch stole) isn't what's most important. So for families who maybe couldn't afford or maybe even didn't celebrate extravagant parties under the name of a holiday
could talk about this story and what being together truly means. It's a little corny but I think that's something to be said.
I'm just having so much fun discovering this channel as a new sub. My only complaint is that the videos themselves aren't an hour long each. Everything they say is so insightful and interesting and I can't get enough. I'm so excited for this channel to gain even more traction and get the recognition it deserves. Keep it up guys! It just hit me after all these years of watching this every year. The Who’s capacity for accepting and enjoying an “imperfect” Christmas is why they are able to welcome an imperfect grinch with open arms and a seat at the table.
I remember the first time I ever saw this grinch. I was probably 3 or so and I remember sitting on my favorite blanket with a dog that looked very much like Max right beside me.
How appropriate that Max is consistently modeling loving accepting behavior for the grinch and towards the grinch while the grinch doesn’t even notice. Dogs are so awesome. 🥰
There's something timeless and charming about hand-drawn animation that gives it a longevity not really seen in other movies imo. There are many great classic movies from over the years that are not animated, of course, but watching one of these feels like watching an old movie, whereas watching an old hand-drawn animated movie just feels like watching a movie, no matter when it was made. There's also a lot of nostalgia wrapped in The Grinch as most of us grew up watching it every year at Christmas and it has become part of our Christmas traditions. The words and messages are still meaningful and relevant, and unlike many modern movies it's jokes have nothing to do with pop culture and therefore are not as prone to age poorly. Also, I disagree that the songs are goofy, I think they're absolutely iconic (and You're a Mean One absolutely slaps). So yeah, that's why I think The Grinch is such a classic.

Jonathan here. I liked it more than Alan did. But then, being a filmmaker himself, he's got a more critical eye than I do when it comes to the craft.
I’m not a fan because of all the rude humor and raunchy jokes. I recently realized why I don’t like a lot of adaptations of stuff like the grinch or the live action scoobydoo. It’s the way they force in crude adult jokes as if adults couldn’t possibly like it if there wasn’t a man making out with a dog’s butthole or enough burp and fart jokes to put you off your popcorn. I love the original grinch and the original scooby doo and they didn’t have any of that. It was a legitimately good story. The only exceptionI’ve found so far is the new jiumanji movie which was legitimately funny. The only scene that I really felt was ‘rude’ was the peeing scene and I think it legitimately added something to the movie rather than just being shoved in for forced laughter. I see why people like these movies but I also understand why therapist reacts doesn’t
Truthfully I do not think the story needs the charicters to be "deep". Their are two things a charicter can be. They can be a person or they can be a stand in for a thought. Kind of like the paragon heroes in old myths. They are not writen as a "real character" but as a personification of an idea. A lot of Dr. Suse's writting intentionaly has the charicters left vague so they can represent an idea instead of the circumstances of a individual. Personaly I think that by giving the grinch a standard back story it striped a lot of the meaning of the original by giving the grinch a "good reason" to hate the town. The line where it points out that his hate could be because of his shoes being to small or his head not being screwed on right is their because the personal circumstances of the grinch do not mater. What really matters is that this mindset he is in has limited his capacity for love. You do not always have to be brutily bullyed to let anger trap you. I mean how many times have you co templated punching something because someone is eating in a quiet room? Or how many people have you seen loose it in the starbucks line because it is taking a while and take it out on the staff? Whether they are doing it because they have had a horible life or because their shoes are uncomfortable is something we will never know and it does not matter. What maters is that if we are the towns people in the situation that we do not let others anger prevent our joy from shining and if we are the grinch in the situation that we not let our anger (justified or not) contort us into someone who actively tries to hurt others. By trying to deepen the individual charicters I think the original message is obscured by how we feel twords the charicter. Now in all fairness the live action movie completely gutted the origninal meaning and instead focoused on a "consumerism is bad" message... which would have been fine if they compleetely did their own film instead of trying to pass it off as a "adaptation" of a clasic.
While I love the Jim Carrey version, I can understand why others are put off by it; the movie has a lot of raunchy humor for something based off of a children's book (for very young children no less), the appearance for the Whos are unsettling (impressive as they are, Dr. Seuss designs are MUCH better on paper than in real life), and for me personally, I can't get over the little issue of having Cindy Lou Who be the "sympathizer" to the Grinch, but ultimately NOT able to recognize him through his piss-poor Santa disguise (cause, like, she's seen him in person, she knows how he acts and sounds, yet still sincerely believed that figure with green-furred hands was Santa and not the Grinch?)
And funny thing with regards to the depth, I actually thought the same for a long time: that the Jim Carrey version was better since it gave the Grinch a reason to hate Christmas. But then I read up what motivated Dr. Seuss to write the original story, and it turned out that the Grinch was based off of *himself*: a cynical man who lived on a hill overlooking a town/city that actively celebrated Christmas, and him despising them for it. So, that revelation at least made me see the original Grinch story in new light: that of an isolated grump who hates something he doesn't understand and tries to ruin it to make everyone miserable just like himself. While the Jim Carrey version is more of a criticism on the commercialization of Christmas, which makes the holiday more about the presents and decorations than "goodwill towards men"

I really like the Benedict Cumberbatch version; it did a good job of addressing how the holidays aren't happy for everyone (those who have bad experiences associated with that time of year, those who feel lonely, those who are overworked) and actually was a good interpretation/retelling of the original. Love the original though 😊 also I don't know what it is about the sound design in the original, but it's So good/satisfying.
I love that Film Theory said the poor Grinch hates Christmas all because he has misophonia. Such a fascinating and fitting theory!

I hate horror, but I don't hate people that like horror, I just run out of the room if they're watching
I also do not like horror. I find the best way to justify the existance of the live action version of the movie is to think of it as being like the alien from "The Thing". Thus I have catigorized it as a horror film and run from the room when it is on.... the other "adaptations" of the great Dr. Get the same treatment.
We've got enough horrors in the world without having to watch it on film!
@@melissacooper4282 I get why you would think that way but I think the horrors in the world are part of the reason horror as a Genre is so well loved. In a way you learn to deal with terrible situations when watching a horror movie or reading a book and it can make the every day horrors seem less bad. I also feel like all the pain characters go through makes the payoff in the end when the evil is defeated feel much more impactful. That's why I mostly dislike horror films that don't have any sort of happy ending.

I re-watch this classic each year because Chuck Jones was such a gifted artist, it is so faithful to the book (Dr. Suess was involved in the creation), Boris Karloff, and Tony the Tiger singing that great song-it's perfect. Really liked the deep dive into Dr. Suess's message.
It’s a classic because everyone’s the grinch sometimes! We just need to remember to broaden our views, and along the way there’s great songs and animation!

I feel like the scene with the grinch talking about noise noise noise (when taken by itself) can also be related to sensory issues if that makes sense.
I watch this one every year because it's just so wholesome. My Grandmother loved it. She passed this year so it makes me cry and smile at the same time.
I think it's just a perfect blend of mischief and heartwarming. We get to laugh at the mustache twirling villainy while also getting touching moments at just the right moments.

We watched the Netflix Grinch and saw it through the eyes of our autistic son. A community perceives someone that doesn’t think, feel the same as them needs to be fixed, they chase him through the streets to force him to be like them. My son found that scene quite confronting. The resolution of the movie is that the thing that makes him different is magically fixed and then he can be accepted in the community as ‘normal’ like everyone one else.
Try watching The Haunting of Hill House, it deals with mental illness, ghosts like guilt, fear, opression. It's a good show.

hill house literally sparked my absolute love for horror bc it deals with such human issues in a supernatural way. welcome to night vale also does that, and i recommend you take a listen if you like hill house sometime, it's great :)

There's a great scene in the Jim Carey/live action Grinch where he goes on about how "Everything comes to me in the garbage" and, speaking from my own experience, any "financially poor" person who's ever been reliant on hand-me-downs, thrift stores, garage sales, etc for anything--from a bed to sleep on, a pan to cook food in, to work shirts--can relate to this, and the feeling of being reliant on someone else's discards for basic things: there's a simultaneous feeling of, "Hooray! For this awesome find!" and "F**K my life that I work as hard as I do and can barely afford to pay for someone else's "trash""--nothing teaches you the value of things quite like financial poverty.
The backstory in that film also quite heavily implies how the Grinch ended up with Max: he was a Christmas puppy that a Who threw away--when he grew, became real work, whatever excuse--and even though nobody would mistake the Grinch for a model pet owner, he did take Max in when no one else wanted him, gave him a home, and loved him in his own way because. let's not forget, the Grinch was a discard himself (even watching the 1966 animated version as a kid I remember wondering how in the world he got to the top of that mountain he lived on).
The Jim Carey film, honestly, is a nice counterpoint to the original: it reminds us that everyone has a backstory and, in the Grinch's case shows him not necessarily in a villainous light--he is, however, a very angry individual and he comes by much of it honestly. The fact that he had a heart that "grew 3 sizes that day" is further proof that he did love and feel quite deeply or else he never would have been capable of growth and change at all.
I love this movie and watch it every year because it's message that Christmas is not about stuff. It's much more. There is also a huge nostalgia movie. In the 80s this came on CBS right before Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer (Frosty the Snowman came on before the Grinch) and that was a huge seasonal event at my house. The whole family would watch it together with snacks and popcorn. Being a typical 1980s latch key kid family time was an event.

When I was little, I looked forward to watching this movie on TV, it was and still is such a classic. And I have never watched the Jim Carrey version all the way through cause he just freaks me out. Earlier this year, I had done some research on some Tim Burton movies (not my favorite genre) to know what they were about so if it came up in conversation, I could contribute. And I have a cousin who's really into darker stuff and horror movies. So once, when she was visiting, I was asking her what she was into and what darker movies she liked, and because I had done research on the subject, I had knowledge of the stuff she was into, like "Corpse Bride."

When he brought up the perception of different things, my first thought was youtube and how my parents see it vs. how I see it. My parents see it as a bunch of lazy college dropouts and adults using their children for content where youtube for me became my home, my safe haven and they hated that and tried to get me away from it as fast as they could. They're always quick to beat it down but I try to defend the good side of it like how people use it to raise money for charity and raise awareness about psychological problems like this channel and so on but they never seem to listen. They're hardened in their perception and it sucks having to be around someone who won't change their mind for you but you're expected to try to get yourself into what they like and see the world how they see it

At the beginning, The Grinch is obviously broken. He seems to have suffered abuse, abandonment, and is alone with nobody that he can talk to and get feedback from. He is angry, and might have sound-related SPD. When he steals the Who's Christmas, he expects to hear crying and see sorrow or despair. His realization that his reality isn't the real one is profound and healing.
I don’t know if in this film but in the new ones it highlights how his past impacts his view. I would love y’all to talk about a new version or a different film that highlights that. Would love your take on that

I love this movie because I grew up poor. I enjoyed getting presents like any kid, but I like that this movie shows that Christmas is about togetherness above all else.
The grinch used to scare me when i was little and i thought the green light in the smoke detectors was the grinch watching me

When it first was shown in theaters it didn't do well at the box office. It wasn't until years later they started the tradition of airing the film on TV on Christmas Eve.

I thought the Jim Carrey version defeated the entire point of the story, that the Whos are so pure of heart that they give the Grinch faith in humanity. The Whos in the live action movie are absolutely awful people who gave the Grinch good reason to hate them.

This was one of the Christmas specials that was on only once a year as a kid, and became a tradition. This, Charlie Brown's special, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman. I teach kids English, and if I'm able to show this around Christmas, I will. Dr. Seuss, funny, the main voice actor is an early movie star (horror, not my thing either, but a lot of my kids like the genre), and people call others grinches, well, here's what a grinch is. I'll show Mickey's Christmas Carol, too.

Perception is something my therapist mentioned in our sessions, and “trying on different lenses” to see the world through. It really helped a lot. Thank you for your videos, guys! You have yourselves a new subscriber.
I watch it every year and what I love about it is how you see the Grinch start to see the Whos in a whole new light and everyone becomes friends in the end.
Well, the Grinch has done me a real service this year....in my efforts as a teacher. One of the learning disabled students I coach, we'll call him J., has some autistic features, and also simply wouldn't concentrate and focus on the work at hand....UNTIL, as he talked off topic about the Grinch, I created the character of Grinchey to help us in our lessons, using a funny voice to portray this invisible friend, Grinchey, who is hopelessly bad at reading. So with every task and question I asked of my student, I"d do the funny voice of "Grinchey". Grinchey would answer wrong or goof up in some way, and then my student, J., would interrupt and answer CORRECTLY. And, as my studentm J., lectured our freind Grinchey on how the Grinch must turn over a new leaf and be "nice" to people, Grinchey had an Amazing Grace moment! He decided that because my student, J., was being friends with him now, and because Grinchey had never had a real friend before, Grinchey would make a sincere effort to be kind and good, from now on, thanks to J's effort and example. So our Grinchey friend continues to show up for lessons along with my student J., still invisible and still having a silly, Grinch-like voice, but he is now a reformed character. And when Grinchey inevitably goofs up with his reading, and answers the academic content questions wrong, J. consols his friend, "Don't worry, Grinchey. Reading is really hard. It takes practice. But don't give up! You must never give up! You'll catch on if you keep trying!" And then J. gives me the right answer.....

The ones with kids movies and shows are my favorite episodes, seeing the deep meanings and lessons they can pull from more simple stories that children can understand.
I think when you grow up with something, like the Grinch who stole Christmas, you gain a love of the nostalgia that viewing it again brings. Suddenly, I am six years old again in the living room with my mom and dad watching it and just waiting until Christmas day.
