    Steph's story completely mirrors my own, it was such a relief when I realised there was a word for it. I've been cursed with working next to some incredibly loud eaters in the past and my co-workers would question why I'd put headphones on and 'ignore' them over lunch. Thanks for raising some awareness.

    OMG my family needs to hear this. SO BAD. Just the misophonia part. The "just get used to it" mentioned hits so at home. That's what they told me. They always called me overdramatic for covering my ears. Eventually I got into the habit of eating as fast as possible and "using the bathroom" where I just ran downstairs as soon as I was done and stayed there until it was all over. They were worried about the bathroom thing, never considering the fact that I couldn't just "get over" the sounds of a certain person eating. They didn't even put two and two together when I would remain at the table if that person wasn't there...

    After hearing Steph talk about her experiences, I’m convinced I have misophonia as well. I had EXTREMELY similar reactions whenever I’d hear my grandfather eat. He was so loud and there was one day where he ate soup and the slurping noises were so intensely distressing to me I literally went to the bathroom to cry for 20 min. I couldn’t even finish my food that night. Over the years I have been able to *kind of* tune out other peoples eating sounds but not usually for very long, especially if they’re in close enough proximity to me. It’s a relief to know I wasn’t crazy for how I feel about these sounds and have been able to find a partner who does his best to avoid those noises when we eat together.

      The only issue with Misophonia is that because we know so little, and it’s self diagnosis, many people misdiagnose themselves. No one likes the sound of chewing. These aren’t just minor annoyances. As someone who has a pretty bad case of misophonia it’s kinda frustrating. I had friend once who wouldn’t stop making one of my trigger sounds. I had asked him to stop, he didn’t. I wasn’t aware of misophonia at the time, but as Steph describes it, I got exponentially angerier. I couldn’t leave the situation. So I tried to stop the noise. I pinned him to the ground. I got in trouble of course and luckily we’re still friends and we are both aware of my misophonia. The entire ordeal took about 15 seconds.
      Edit: Sorry if this isn’t super coherent I’m pressed for time.

    Steph's description of misophonia reminds me a lot of my dad. He's really sensitive to eating noises too, and will often tell us to "stop chewing so loud". These comments were said to me most often whenever I ate something crunchy like chips, because it seems that, even when my mouth is closed, I'm the loudest eater. At least now I know I wasn't annoying dad moreso it's a sound sensitivity on his end.

  • @lionwarrior7652

    As someone who has misophonia, it’s not the repetitiveness of a sound that bothers me, it’s the type of sound that causes you to feel uncomfortable and have certain emotions. For me it was a soft noise like a whisper that would make me feel uncomfortable and angry, and sudden loud noises like flushing a loud toilet would trigger me for a few seconds. It’s hard to describe it, but a person with this has certain triggers that causes people to feel this way, and we don’t get to choose what those triggers are. Chewing doesn’t bother me at all even though it’s a repetitive sound

    I cannot guarantee this would be the case for all people with Misophonia, but my belief is that people who went through sevear trauma then get super sensitive around noises and anything else that reminds them of that awful situation. The inability to escape that noise then triggers all the feelings of anxiery and anger - because what we do with our lives is generally to try to escape anything that is similar to what has happend. It is possible that something happend when you were so young you have no memory of it, but your nervous system remembers all to well and panicks when it hears a sound that seems like it might happen again.

    I have a theory idea: In the movie The Polar Express, the train has to get from each kids house (assuming they all live in different areas of the world) to the North Pole in one night (the conductor says near the beginning “tonight is Christmas Eve!”). So how fast would the train have to be going in order to get to the North Pole and back and drop off all those kids?? I have Misophonia, and Stephanie's Rendition of it is Literally the best way to describe how we feel during these sensitivity responses. The ear covering impulse, playing music to attempt to cover it and feeling panicked and angry in the shortest amount of time. I am grateful that my family is very understanding and wearing headphones help a lot for me. Also family members who tend to ear louder sit farther away from me to help as well. Chewing noises are my major thing, but I actually wonder if I have other sensitivities to different sounds besides just chewing. I find if encouraging knowing there are others like me. I know this is an older film theory, but I just wanted to write all this out to hopefully help others.

    • @dragonblast4854

      I don't know if it is Misophonia, but I feel the same kind of impulse to cover my ears, feeling annoyed and eventually feeling really panicked and angry, when it comes to talking or music that is slightly louder than normal, but only after I already had some other irritant or slight stress, like having to solve a problem unexpectedly, or someone being annoying.
      Like I am happily doing work in a crowded place, I am very calm, then I am told to do something, but the person didn't explain it fully and there is basically no information to make an informed guess, and suddenly my ears tune in and I can hear everyone talking, and it won't stop, and I just want to cover my ears and leave, but I can't and I start panicking because it feels like I am surrounded by this terrible annoying noise and there is no escape and a sudden rush of anger gets over me.
      And just wanted to ask if it feels similar to your experiences ^^

    • @saraonieo5219
      @saraonieo5219 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dragonblast4854 it actually is very similar. Misophonia can be triggered very suddenly by stress as well. There are many times where these noises seem to happen and I pay them no mind, but other times it feels like they are the only thing I can hear. It's certain though that everyone with Misophonia experiences it differently. Whether it's different triggers or different responses altogether.

      I get the same impulse to cover my ears, and I will turn up my music impossibly loud to cover up people talking. I also get very panicked and angry when it's loud, or crowded, or anything like that. The weirdest noises make me want to flip the table. I don't know if I have Misophonia, but I may bring it up with my grandmother because the comments and this video are making me think I likely do.

      @@gamerninjask6746 an interesting fact is that many people without knowing it have a small form of Misophonia. Sounds like nails on a chalkboard for example many people commonly associate with anger and frustration. This is a small piece of Misophonia everyone has. Some like us though have it more often with common everyday things. Chewing is a common one, others have uncommon ones like Thunder for me.

  • @wiingdings
    @wiingdings 4 ปีที่แล้ว +133

    Stephanie describing misophonia is exactly how I feel when I hear an insect. That awful whining and buzzing sound has kept me awake/woken me up at night, caused me to literally run away in a panic if I'm out walking, cover my ears, etc. and it's not the fear of the insect itself - I don't care if there's a mosquito in my room, but as soon as I can hear it, I freak out. Even hearing someone else imitate it can make me anxious. So thank you - I think I learned something new about myself!

    The one thing that debunks this theory is on Christmas morning, when the Grinch had stolen all the stuff, he listens for the sad sounds of the Whos. Instead he hears singing and church bells. He realizes that he can't stop Christmas by stealing all the Whos Christmas things because Christmas is just about all the mushy heartfelt stuff associated with the season. His heart grows three sizes, learns the error of his ways, and celebrates Christmas with the Whos, not stopping the noise at all.

      There actually is another disorder similar to misophonia but for visual triggers. I don't know too much about and I don't remember what it's called, but I saw it on a site that talked about misophonia so I might recommend doing some of your own research. It does happen to me, for instance, one of my misophonia triggers is chewing, so now I can't even see people chewing without having that kind of a reaction.

    I wonder if you can acquire a milder form of misophonia later in life. In my early college years, I had this small wooden clock that would constantly tick. Eventually for some reason, I wouldn't be able to filter out the ticking noise and got so annoyed that I just of rid of it...nowadays sometimes I become too consciously aware of my own heartbeat. But apparently that might be some form of sensori-motor OCD which could also explain why I often become consciously aware and distracted by my own breathing. Maybe there's some link between misophonia and sensori-motor OCD...

I didnt get misophonia until is was about 9 (still not as long as you, but it's not an at birth thing (usually))triggers can come in many different ways, and they usually happen when you hear a noise repeatedly. There are theories it is from trauma, but I personally dont know about tha ft.

    Well for the question of "Have I learned an Instrument growing up?", yes, I have.
    I played violin and piano. Still am playing Piano nowadays, but mostly during family outings :3
    Misophonia is not funny. I have that and my little sister has it. Two out of 8 children in our family and two out of five from our entire family tree even.
    I have Misophonia for noises connected to scraping on metal. Most intense with Stone scraping over metal, like when you cut rock with a rock cutter blade. I came to this when I was 18 years old and had to go abroad for studying in Art. Our classroom was across from a shed for a sculpturing class, which used these sort of machines all the time and it was painful. Even when all windows were closed I could hear the noise getting louder in the back of my head. It got to the point were I battled myself through a class once and passed out in the middle of it, due to the stress.
    My sister's Misophonia is the same as Stephanie's. She hates eating noises, even her own. She gets really mad and angry about it, even though she is an Anti-social, anxiety filled bag that battles with fits of depression. She never gets angry at all, unless it really upsets her. She shrugs off insults, critiques and harassment like a brick wall, but try eating chips in her vicinity and she will take the closest leap out of there.
    It's one of the things that is just fascinating yet so aggravating. Especially when nobody believes you have it at all. One of the issues me and my sister faced for 10 years straight, before I got so fed up with it that I got us both to a doctor who diagnosed us with it, finally.
