    I remember getting my Index, one of the things that really stood out to me was how they boxed and presented everything in said box. Neatly packed and ready to go back in at a moments notice. Valve really out do themselves with packaging. Now if they could just get to new games I think we'd all be even happier.

    The Steam Deck is honestly the best gaming related device in my house hold, I play on it more than my PS5 or desktop. I was playing Ocarina of Time 3D in my backyard enjoying a nice evening, it started to rain a little so I went back inside, docked it to my monitor and continued playing, also I used the Deck's screen as the bottom DS screen, and my monitor as the main screen. Linux and amd have been critically underestimated . Paired with gradual product development at Valve…no wonder its a smash

    • @kikixchannel
      @kikixchannel ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@LTV746 AMD is not underestimated, and neither is Linux. Both of them suffer from the same things. Studio support. AMD has far more issues with games not because their hardware is bad, but because game companies actively support Intel/NVidia while botching their AMD support (or not giving it at all). Similarly not many bother giving support for gaming on Linux.
      Linux is far safer and more reliable system than Windows and almost every professional will tell you as much. That is why Linux is the #1 operating system for professional, specialized uses (like servers), where the 'users' don't care about the worthless crap added in Windows (an OS that has higher requirements than games and programs that run on it...seriously?!).
      Similarly AMD, when it is supported, it regularly shows greater performance at the same numbers. But if a gamer just 'wants the game to run', AMD falls behind. If a game has CPU/GPU-specific issues, it's usually with AMD, not Intel/NVidia. Because Microsoft and NVidia do a LOT to incentivize developers to fine-tune their works (if there's any fine-tuning to be done, that is...) for their hardware. AMD just hopes to compete with quality goods...which just doesn't work in a world where the person yelling loudest, not the smartest one, is the person in control.

    The steam deck really feels like lessons learned from previous hardware endeavours by Valve. Market as a simple to use machine with 3 very simple and easy options (lessons from the steam machines). Portability with the ability to connect peripherals and stream games from your PC (steam link). Optional trackpads but still a focus on traditional controls (steam controller). I feels like they took the positives and lessons and put them all into a strong, portable system. I've had mine for about a month and I'm still just blown away with it (mind you, I am a bit biased).
    I know it's a bit of an issue for many, but I do love where the controls are as my hands and fingers are quite long making it fit perfectly in my hands (though the buttons on the back can be a bit odd to press at times).

      Yes. With how one of them is better than the other within a single device, it's pretty clear that it is a defective unit. Not a defect that would warrant replacement generally, but it's not 'as designed'. However, it's good to know that such units are shipped, so someone that is nitpicky about that stuff may get ready for possibly requesting a fix/replacement.

    I've had mine since February. I was in the second batch. It puts a huge smile on my face when I see people getting theirs because I know how much fun you're going to have.
    I've had it long enough now for it to settle into it's niche, but the "new toy" feeling still hasn't gone away. I've finished more games on this thing than I have since middle school, before I had a smartphone (I'm 31).
    This thing kicks ass. When I say it found it's niche I mean that it's completely replaced my desktop PC and consoles for everything but Plex media server. SteamOS and portability makes it so fun to rediscover older games and is somehow helping me blow through my back catalog.

      Yep what's great about 40fps is that it's literally 50% better than 30fps. The math doesn't seem to look that way but 1/30 is 33.33ms while 1/40 is 25ms, 1/60 is 16.66ms. So 40fps is literally halfway between 30 and 60

    It's also a reminder...(and we don't get these often anymore since Valve hasn't put out new games in so long) that Valve really does a very thorough job in design and QA for new products.

    The steam deck (SD) has dramatically shifted the market. People who bought other handheld devices a month or two ago got screwed, as now those some companies are releasing much better, stronger and cheaper devices.
    This all due to the SD and the attention it brought to the handheld market. Look at aya alone, the AYA NEO a 4500U handheld with vega graphics used to cost a 1015$, the aya neo next has AMD Ryzen 7 5825U and vega graphics for 1565$.
    Now look at aya afterwards:
    1) Aya neo air plus Mendocino apu 270$
    2) Aya neo Lite Ryzen 5 5560U + Oled screen 500$
    3) You also have the aya neo 2, aya neo 2 geek, Ayaneo slide, Ayaneo Flip which will all use the Rembrandt apu with the RDNA 2 graphics plus Zen 3 and should even be stronger than the steam deck. I don't know the pricing for most of those but the geek's 6600U model is 619$ and should be as strong or stronger than SD (IDK no one benchmarked it)
    Some of these devices are even encroaching on SD territory and god damn everyone who bought the earlier devices got burnt as RDNA 2 stomps vega. If you've been following the scene you also know about the ayn loki and onexplayer and gpd are probably jumping on this cash cow soon.
    SD is literally making the handheld pc market mainstream. I don't think it's too far away from Valve releasing steamos 3.0 for full public use and these devices ditching windows for steamos 3.0

      Not really... You do realize GPD has been making handheld PCs for the last 5 years right? Ayaneo and Onexplayer were making handhelds almost a year before Valve even announced the steam deck. Valve has had some impact on the market though. But in reality the cheap handhelds that they'll push out later this year have the same paltry storage options steam deck has.

    • @khaledm.1476
      @khaledm.1476 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@businesstron Yes those handhelds existed before but they were quite niche. The difference is Valve has now brought alot of eyes to a previously niche market.

    Just noting that also after the recent Proton 7.0-3 update, a majority of the games that had issues with cutscenes are now working. For those who want to play the Falcom games like YS and Trails of Cold Steel. Even though they are all listed as unsupported, work completely fine now. (Haven’t testing all the YS games yet. But “Memories of Celceta” works great. Just make sure to turn HDR off. It tanks the FPS for some reason.) Falcom does have this launcher to alter the graphical settings before you boot up the game that you have to deal with in all their games. But it’s completely playable. Just noting that if you want to access the graphical settings again. You’ll have to launch it in desktop mode so that it’ll give the option to run the launcher. For some reason after the initial setup in some of them on game mode it won’t let you access it after the first time. So if you wanna keep going back to adjust the graphics, you have to quickly switch to desktop mode. Then once you’re done, go back to game mode if you want. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

    48:26 the reason steam deck performs so well (its opengl, not vulkan btw) is because of the open source amd drivers on linux where the community has worked a lot to bring opengl performance to fully utilze the hardware compared to proprietery drivers on windows which have abysmal opengl support. Plus, cemu is not available on linux yet(the cemu team is working on it though), so you were using the windows version on top of wine/proton which might affect the performance a bit considering how demanding wii u emulation can be in weaker hardware. I think that issue will be resolved once the linux version comes out. Really in-depth review btw!

There are a few things missing yet like HDR support and a few other things but development has been so rapid since the deck came out with not only the Linux kernel but also stuff like Proton, DXVK, Mesa and Vulkan. Most of the incompatibility issues are just DRM/Anti-cheat related and it's more up to the game devs to enable that stuff. Some devs like Bungie hate linux and will never enable linux support sadly.

    Regarding the deck's upcoming dock: unlike the switch, it wont have any additional processing power for extra performance on a higher res screen. Valve has stated themselves that it will just be a deck branded thunderbolt hub, and nothing more.
    As for the desktop experience, it just runs a standard KDE Plasma 5 interface, which is not developed by valve, and has been one of the goto interfaces for linux operating systems for a long while now. For this reason, I dont think you should hold off on reviewing the desktop aspect, as that side of the experience is already as refined as its ever going to be on the deck.

      I think the mk2 of this; after all the success will see mass adoption of this. As an emulator I have everything, EVERYTHING! before PS2 loaded. With video previews and ratings, updating constantly. It’s just out of this world.

    As a long time Linux gamer, I love to see how Yong is getting into the nitty gritty a little bit. Linux has a learning curve (to be fair, so does Windows), but once you're used to it, it can be very flexible and user friendly. I'm at a point where I struggle with Windows. Something that I can fix in minutes in Linux, may take me days and several sketchy scripts to do on Windows. A technophobe friend of mine actually got addicted to the Linux terminal in mere days, to the point that Windows became frustrating to him within a week of learning Linux. I get that the terminal seems daunting, and Linux is at a point where you don't really need to use it anymore, but it's actually really useful. Having had to mess with CMD on Windows for work recently, I certainly know which I prefer.
    Be careful Yong, Windows might start to feel highly restrictive.

      Switched over to (Garuda) Linux a few months ago partly thanks to excitement for the Steamdeck (and to get away from Windows) and haven't regretted a thing, only a handful of games in my 150+ game library don't work yet, and I have access to much of the same open source software like Gimp and Blender so it's been fantastic

      It can be for sure, Steam Deck 2 will be quite a few years away though. I think of it like this, Steam Deck is basically in a beta right now, we're testing the waters of what it can do as is, with upgrading it and with the various accessories people have bought such as mobile battery banks,silicon skins,etc. I can accurately predict that Steam Deck 2 will likely feature a OLED display, hot-swappable analog sticks, more battery life and a slightly better cpu/gpu combo with a better cooling solution.
      So an overall upgrade but not one to get too crazy about it. If you want a mobile handheld linux based gaming laptop, it's a sure fire way to go. Cheaper than more bulkier laptops at the cost of battery life and a lesser resolution display. I bought mine a few days ago and it arrives tomorrow.
      I personally treat it like a phone, it'll last me for whatever I throw at it, but if I ever break my Deck later on and the Deck 2 is out, I may give it a shot.

    • @LyricalViking
      @LyricalViking ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TiCail50 I predict we'll see the Deck 2 come around around 2025-2026. I don't think they'll change the APU that much but the CPU might get a nice upgrade, The CPU of the deck is the only thing really holding it back.

Put a protective glass to keep the screen protected, just ordered a case for the skin, looking for the official dock... Already decking out my deck...
    Need to get Emulation Station soon, should fit just fine on my the 1 TB SD Card...

    i seriously think the steam deck is perfect for indie games also, since some indie games are in 2D, platformers and their graphic level is basic. Its great to play on something like steam deck. Especially the platformers or games like harvest moon and etc.
