I enjoy the 'sitting around camp' and talking about camping and gear.

I have a GFC Superlite rrt on top of a 4/Motion VW Atlas coupled with an ARB awning/tent. This combo is easy to setup but forces my vehicle to be locked into acting as part of our Basecamp. We're a family of five so alot of gear ends up inside these tents.
This has stopped us from venturing out from our sites more that ounce.
Luckily I didn't sale my Colman Octagon 8 tent (thought I'd never need it again) which now serves as a true Basecamp that we can leave on site as we explore our surroundings. You both bring up great points that are often over looked by newcomers... (Me) I now pay more attention to all the various goals and conditions that each camping trip presents. Having different camping setups goes a long way in ensuring a great stress free outing. You do not need to spend large sums of cash to get the most enjoyment out of your camp.
Cheaper gear is more that capable. In my case spending the extra caeh helps to get the entire family outdoors with less hassle.

Really good pro/con discussion guys - thank you! You didn’t discuss tear down, which I have to believe favors the Gazelle over the Smitty. A hardtop RTT would have the upper hand, but you’d now be spending in the $3k+ neighborhood. Another issue I have is storage of the tent when not in use. I don’t want to leave a RTT on top of my SUV all the time and I don’t have a good spot to store one. I’ve seen some people install pulley suspension systems in their garage, but that’s yet another expense. I can throw the Gazelle in my attic or even lean it in a corner of my garage. Last, I want some kind of shelter that I can stand in, as well have a chair and small table for rainy days. I can’t imagine being stuck in a RTT with no other place to go. I suppose you can add a canopy structure, but that adds more $ and set up time. That storage issue and being able to stand up and have a little space in the tent have me leaning in the Gazelle T4 direction, but the debate is a good one!

The great tent debate! I think we have the RTT v Ground conversation at every campfire ha ha! Peeing on your Rotopax is definitely a con to the RTT ha ha!

You guys are hilarious! I really enjoyed the video, a chilled camping discussion amongst friends. I have a T3 and I love it, although I have a tent thing meaning I have several. The reasons I would not get a roof top was mentioned, I’m a woman and if I need to pee which happens often at 65 I’m “screwed” lol. I also have 2 dogs, a 35lbs and a 70 lbs pit, no way I’m carrying them up and last but not least I mostly go solo with my dogs for several weeks at a time, I need a tent to hold my space when off roading or getting extra supplies. I’ve really enjoyed the video! Thanks.

I bought a Gazelle T3X instead of a rooftop tent. I think it’s the best medium between the 2 styles. Personally, I think the only benefits of a RTT is being off the ground & stowed bedding, and those are of very limited value to me. With a RTT, I’m more or less locked in to just one of my vehicles, must have a separate ground tent & bedding if I happen to roadtrip with friends in their vehicle or if I want to drive my other vehicles, must buy a separate shelter or RTT annex if I want a legitimate roomy hangout space for inclement weather, limited to where I can setup because a vehicle may not fit in the most desirable spot, difficult to have pets in a RTT, must buy a rack on which to mount the RTT, difficult to hold your campsite if you want to explore in your vehicle or need to depart for provisions, etc. At immediate face value, a RTT seems great but there are just way too many cons in it for me when I take all things into consideration.

LOL Just checked & All Gazzelle Tents are all Sold OUT.
Every time I crack the screens on my tents usually have little condensation unless the humidity is extremely high.
Who the Hell are the people figuring out the number of people that fit """Comfortably""" in tents. 2-3=1 3-4=2 & that's with OUT bags & such.
Best selling point for ground tents is they can be Air Out when done without taking much room at home, & most can be moved after being set up Easily. Worst part of ground tents is water on ground & pokey thingies.
