    "Gold" notes, perhaps. I always think in colors. You are a colorful teacher.

    Your content is amazing I’ve been implementing sub tones, ghost notes as well as articulation, and dynamics towards goal notes and my playing is greatly improving due to these key things.
    Thanks Scott

      @@ScottPaddockI’ve put a lot of though into it and most likely will go for it in the near future. Keep up the great work. Your methods for teaching are simple and effective. I lack in almost every area but feel I can own it. I’m hit or miss. I’ll start putting towards it. 👍

    Dynamics...articulation...goal notes...that's why the tunes I play sound boring or major part of the reason...great point of how the vocalist sings the same 1-2 notes in the measure...I try to switch up the notes that fit into the scale of the tune and use articulation with it to make it not sound boring...lol...thanks for the vid...definitely gave me some insight of how to make a melody sound more alive...

    Hi Scott....nice lesson. I think you can also apply this to Jazz standards as well. Listening to how a singer phrases can really help.

    Thanks Scott.....excellent as always. Did you have a great teacher, or did you come to work out a lot of these tips yourself?

    • @ScottPaddock

      My dad was a jr. high band director and I grew up listening to the basics of music explained my entire young life. Then I had a great teacher in high school/college. But most of my techniques and breakdowns are things I came up with along the way.

    Hi Scott, can you please do a video on how to improve on the middle D sounding stuffy. Also on the difference between playing high and low notes, on embouchure (how tense/loose and big/small our mouth cavity should be) and throat (open/closed). Hope that wasn't too incoherent. Cheers

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ming! The stuffy D is probably more of an equipment thing than a standard way to fix it. Try some different reeds, or possibly a trip to the repairman. I already did a video on embouchure and tongue position. Here it is: th-cam.com/video/CZ7_zK2dssY/w-d-xo.html

    • @johnm3844
      @johnm3844 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! After some experimenting I found that the middle D sounds less stuffy when my tongue was in the low position (which is odd since it should be in the middle), could this be an exception since air has to travel all the way to the bottom of the sax?
      Also after some googling I found that the stuffy D is a common problem among beginners. Could you maybe do an in-depth video on this please. Thank you again so much!

      Yeah, it's pretty crazy how easy it is to make a melody sound better just with some simple shifts in articulation.

  • @ghulamyar5402
    @ghulamyar5402 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was really useful - thanks! Can you apply the same to jazz or is the approach to articulation different?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can absolutely use it with jazz (or any music). Finding the goal notes will be the same but your articulation might change to fit the genre of music that you are playing. I did one on jazz articulation. Check it out!

    Is there a vid where he helps you determine which notes are goal notes?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I talk about it in several videos on TH-cam, and I do it for every song I teach in my Sax School.

  • @davidcox8961

    I like to have lyrics when I play a tune. It helps me remember the emotions the song is trying to convey. The words are my target notes I suppose. I watched a video recently where Benny Golson explained the tune 'Killer Joe'. He kept seeing these dudes come into the club with a couple of beautiful women and lots of spending money. Then he learned they were pimps and the song was born. Just having that image in mind helps me improvise.

      Scott love your lessons! I find myself having to lower the volume on your signature screaming lick that precedes each lesson... maybe find a more inviting and gentler sound to start off each lesson again I love your lessons

    love on top is kind of fast, what about slow song such as my heart will go on?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ballads use goal notes too, but the articulations are completely different because the notes are all longer. So you're not going to dot and marcato notes as much.

    • @dr.kennyp1754

      Can you show us how to articulate or make ballads such as my heart will go on like what jackhsu87 said sound more amazing?
