    In this video, Scott demonstrates 4 simple embellishments that you can use to improve any melody. By adding these simple ornaments to a melody (and solo lines) it gives it more motion and expression. The four embellishments are: grace notes, scoops, turns and falls.

    Scott - You're videos are excellent. You are able to get across some useful ideas and techniques very easily by explaining them clearly and then showing how it's done, drawing on your obviously vast musical knowledge and experience of playing this wonderful instrument - the saxophone. Your graphics are also brilliant in reinforcing the learning. I learned the sax when I was sixteen at school and have picked it up again many years later at the grand age of 68. They say you can't teach an old dog news tricks but you have proved this wrong. You're teaching style is enthusiastic and informative and gives one great motivation to have a go and improve. I will watch all of your videos - they are infectious. Keep them coming. Thank you.

      Hey Patrick what's with the word "Tricks?" It seems these days whenever someone is talking about a "technique" they use the word trick instead. I feel like it's a marketing conclusion that people are more responsive to a trick as it implies it doesn't take any work you just open the can and this trick pops out, no work necessary.

    Fantastic tutorial. My what a difference the embellishments make
    When I played summertime on tenor sax it sounds quite flat.
    Something I can work on to improve the sound.
    Many Thanks.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Yeah, those embellishments really bring thing song together. Later this week, I'm doing a video on embouchure. That might be the fix you need to get a bigger less flat sounding tone.

  • @coajrmusic
    @coajrmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Scott I've been playing a while and do all of this stuff, and to your point, have to be aware not to overdo it (I was in fact thinking that very thing earlier today). But I must say, you sound fantastic. You have great technique, and your tone puts you in the world-class category. There are some players you can recognize quickly and you are becoming one of those guys for me. The sound is drawing me in, so I'm about to search for a live setting and really hope you have something posted....and I subbed...

    Hi Scott, this are by far the best sax teaching videos !. A question: how do you deal with the middle C# that is in the melody?. It sounds nice you you play it. In most alto sax models it sounds thin and out of tune. Do you use alternate fingerings there ?.

    • @rebornnate7010
      @rebornnate7010 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nestor Fernández if u press down on the third finger key on ur left hand while playing C# it comes out more in tune

      Looking forward to it! One lesson suggestion might be to do something on playing in a Rock style, a little like your very concise lesson on funk. I tried to play in a cover band a while back, but I: a) hadn’t counted on those tough guitar-oriented key signatures and b) couldn’t drop my jazz-standards phrasing or my “stock” phrases.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Yeah, those key signatures are tough!! Now I'm super comfortable in C# and F#, but when I first started playing in that style it was a bit of a struggle. I'll put rock style on the list. Thanks.

  • @rk702

    Hey Scott, just curious if you change the audio settings on the recording when you talk vs. when you play? You have a great sound, very free and effortless in all registers. Keep up the great work.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have 2 mics. One for talking and one for playing. My sax is much louder than my voice so I realized early on I need 2. In my early videos I did everything on a go pro, and the sound was kind of weird.
