    There was a US navy base in San Juan, the San Juan Naval Air Station in Isla Grande from 1942 and close in the 70's or 80's.
    Maybe your grandfather was stationed there or maybe he was in Roosevelt Roads in Ceiba. I remember the navy ships like subs, carriers and destroyers going in and out of the harbor.

      My Grandfather was in Puerto Rico in March 1945 aboard the USS LCS 3 #1. In a book my aunt wrote it's mentioned this was a pleasure trip. Three ships of the LCS flotilla first went to Bermuda before going into PR. He told a story of them going into San Juan Harbor and throwing coins into the water as young boys would follow the ships and dive for coins. He noted the poverty along the shore as many people were living in cardboard shacks.
