Hi. Do you have an email I can contact you at? I have a 4-53T Silver that has been sitting around for a while and I am trying to get running. One of the cylinders has a stuck valve. Do you have any tricks to freeing it up without removing the cylinder head? Thanks in advance! Pat
Sure, emerald310@gmail.com. I'd use a penetrating oil on the stuck valve, remove the exhaust manifold as well and spray from the bottom up. I like to move the rocker arms away from the valves and tap the valve with a soft hammer. Can rotate the engine slowly with a bar to push the valve back up. A few times like that and it should free up.
Yeah, it's loud.:) I have a nice intake silencer for it, just have to fab the piping.:) Noise level is around 110 dbs over the blower at 2000 rpm. Double hearing protection is a must.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 that is a good swap I know where there is a clark fork lift with a 3/53 in it the motor is really tired have had my eye on it for a bit now I think it's a 15000 lb
I love Detroit engines, all the way through the Series 60. Don't much care for the DD13 & DD15 of later years; I'm sure they are good, just not a Detroit to me. As I have gotten older, (63), I find the noise is a little much anymore. The last 2 strokes I overhauled were 8v92's, they were actually pretty quiet compared to that 2-53.
The DD13/15/16 are basically rebadged Mercedes-Benz OM471/472/473 engines, respectively. Maybe a few differences here and there, but for the most part, that's exactly what they are, so yeah...not real Detroits. I'd take a Series 60 over any of them, but one of the 2-stroke OG's over the Series 60.
@@detroitgarage9430 Though we never had 'em here in Brazil, the 60 Series was my go-to when driving in American Truck Simulator. I know it's just a game, but hey...sometines it's the only way to be a little closer to our childhood heroes, hahah! 😅 A Freighliner FLB with a 550-hp DD60 was my truck of choice for many years. 😁
I’m building a 4-53t for my square body Chevy, I have 3 engines hopefully to Make one good one, the engine I’m currently tearing down now is a 4-53 na out of a railroad machine. None of them are silver series. But was wondering if theirs a difference in the rods a cranks from non turbo to turbo? I’m assuming the blocks don’t have anything different to them. Also noticed that this block is a Mexico block the other 2 are Brazil blocks and the Detroit logos on them are the circle arrows with the Detroit diesel in the center vs this Mexico block just has the 2 arrows in a circle with no lettering in the center must just be a older block? All 3 engines are 4 valve engines. Any help is appreciated thanks.
Yes there's a difference in rods, cam, pistons and block. The pistons are 18.7:1 ratios on the T engine and 21:1 on the N engines. Con rod piston pins are larger in diameter on the T engines, 1.5" compared to 1.375" on the N. Block on the T engines are built stronger and the rear is closed off in the airbox section. You can build a T engine with an N block by changing rods and using the N cam. Blower is also 15% larger on the N engine, which also can be used on the T. I think you can still buy 1.375" wrist pin T pistons, but I've never looked into it. I converted an 3-53N to a 3-53T and it runs very nice, just changed the rods and pistons, kept everything else.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 ok thank you very much!!! , Are the heads any different from all the 4 valve heads I know they made aluminum versions at one time but besides that are the heads the same from the NA to the T and the silver ?
@@kalebhanson9808 The N and T heads are the same with the T heads having T valves. Most of the new valves are all T valves now. The Silver head differs as it's cast with dog bone cavities in it. This prevents cracking that plagued the N and T heads. I'm picking up another Silver 4-53T this weekend and with any luck the owner finds the head. I'll be making a video on the differences between N, T and Silver versions of the 4-53 series.:)
Thanks for taking us along for the ride, that little forklift is just too cool!
Thanks, sure is a hoot.:)
Love that little 2 53 in that unit, just amazing how well it works... Great job doing the conversion...
Thanks, sure is running nice.:)

I think the blower is louder than the exhaust! At least to the camera mic!

Have you ever considered getting a stepvan and mid mounting a 8v71t in it
No, but I do have a 6V71T that I plan swapping after the Diamond T build.:)
is that a Aprilia hanging on the wall? the silver 2 stroke street bike?
No, it's a 1997 Yamaha R1Z250.:) Was built until 1999 and then discontinued, last smoke for Yamaha.:)
That is a neat little lifter image had a few detrouts in my day
I guess I can't spell lol
Yeah, coming up on 50 hrs since I swapped in the Detroit.:)

Very true, this is by far the loudest Detroit I've ever run.:) My Silver 4-53T is half the noise.:)
