  • Festival Racers have catapulted in popularity within the past decade, but where did all of this craze come from? Today, I journey back to 2007, and to a game that i've never played before, Need For Speed Prostreet, to find out where the festival fandom came from, and to see if we can look to the past for inspiration in bettering the future of the genre!

True but thinking about it after replaying it recently.
Ray nearly murdered a few people and got away with it. Like that could just disqualify him completely like yea no fuck you ray you endangered lives of people on your way to race ryan and nearly hit the flag waver. Get your ass out bmw you're done.
It would be interesting alternative where someone else takes ray place after he disqualified himself for attempting assault with deadly weapon.
But overall. All the kings are easy to beat. Ryo he is bit challenging but easy. Although ai in the game is bs at times so much brake checks and trying to ram you off the road.

@@purwantiallan5089 Nate Denver being easy is an interesting part of him in itself. You try driving his GTO, you'll need both perfect tuning setup and very sharp skills to make that car driveable, nevermind competent.
All of the Speed tracks do a good job of making themselves geared towards a certain kind of car, like full low drag on Autobahn or a light essentially Grip car on Tokyo Expressway, but his muscle is not optimal for any of the tracks, it's just an oldschool choice, which makes me think he's an old boomer who's been doing it for so long that nobody from Nitrocide challenges him simply out of respect, and for whom his GTO is a car he is comfortable with or/and derives the most thrills from. But Ryan crashed onto the scene and didn't get the memo.
To redeem Ryan, you gotta use Nate's green beast against Ryo. No blueprinting, just setup (through race practice).

this game was definitely a product with quite a few growing pains, but as the progenitor of a racing subgenre, it sure did evoke so much personality that the roster of games you mention sort of fail to replicate
pro street was also a crystal clear example of a time when gaming developers were willing to put their creative vision to the test with new tools and toys at their disposal, and despite the numerous kinks this game might have to a lot of people, there's a reason it's being looked back upon as a game that a lot of people might've slept on, and gave too much unfair negative press, that is a testament to how a piece of media can age and attract cult followings

You do have to be that kind of player, but what gives me the perfect downtime between racing in this game is customizing cars and creating liveries. It's not mentioned in this video, but ProStreet has one of the very best vinyl editors in any racing game, ever IMO. It's only limited to 20 vinyls and 20 sponsor decals per car, but the amount of cool designs, the window stickers and the one-button mirroring make it such a solid package. And as you mentioned in the video, this game has such a great amount of soul in it, which makes the cars you make in the game so much more enjoyable to drive and look at.

Great video! The only thing I disagree with is your complaint of the lack of mini-bosses. In my view, you're almost constantly facing "mini-bosses" throughout the career - but they come in the shape of drivers that represent the teams of all 5 kings. For example, Gavin May, Henrik Dehn and Rudy Chen are all members of the Grip Runners and are, respectively, some of the tougher opponents to beat during grip races. The same can be said for the rest of the disciplines: Boxcut (Nate Denver) has JP Laurent who drives a fairly fast Zonda, After Mix (Karol Monroe) has Frank Book which usually dominates the 1/4 mile and Apex Glide (Ryo Watanabe) has both Paul Trask and Ivan Tarkovsky who are fast in both Speed and Grip.
I find the AI racers in ProStreet actually have very varied personalities and ways of driving and feel very characterful, even outside of the drivers I mentioned. You'll notice you race a separate set of rivals if you're in North America, Europe or Japan, as well as having them mix together whenever you're at a Showdown event.

I still remember my first track festival. It was the first time I ever saw and heard actually high hp cars going around a track in real life, not forgetting drifting. Just a bit after entering the venue and finding a place to camp, I approached the nearest corner of the track and I think it was some seriously tuned Audi that took the last corner before the main straight and at that point, hearing the sweet sounds of the dump valve and the car speeding away, I was like "Damn, ProStreet actually sounded like the real deal". I had played it for about a year at that point.

Thanks for the video, I love Prostreet, especially when it first announced, because I love the idea of grassroots racing. My game modes in this game are Drag and Speed race, for me they the most challenging game modes in NFS games. Prostreet is the reason, why I keep telling people, that going fast in a straight line or driving at high speed on a highway is not easy, it's a bigger challenge to maintain in control of a car in that extreme conditions at extreme speeds, because losing control has a dire consequences and damages.

The biggest compliment i could say about this game's atmosphere is...
I WANNA BE IN ONE OF THESE RACE DAYS SO BAD, EVEN AS A SPECTATOR. The announcers really add to the over all vibe too. To the point that i make sure that during my playthrough, i have to sit through what the announcers says in the race day menu before entering a race. And the hubs for these events look so cool too with their different themes. There's a lot of neat details that made these race days authentic imo.

I have replayed & finished (2,00,000 career money) this game as an adult and the experience was mind-blowing. I didn't understand the game as a child but as an adult and an aspiring interaction designer, I'm seeing how the gameplay is well-crafted for its period. Also as an adult, I started with common cars and built into race cars through progress. I didn't buy cars but used the won cars during race days which offers sample cars by event organisers. My childhood mind was obsessed with selling the first Nissan and wanting a Lamborghini immediately when I got a lot of career money.

Always glad to see a good Prostreet video. I have to shill two things related to this game: first is Austin Ogonoski's video - man has some takes sbout the setting and behind the courtains stuff I have never seen before.
The second is Prostreet Pepega mod. Despite looking like a joke mod at the first glance, it is a massive expansion to all of the ingame content, rebalance and tweak galore to handling and AI and features a new story.

The problem with prostreet was that it was a little ahead of its time which is a shame because it’s somehow gotten better with age. Prostreet has one of if not the best festival vibes for a racing game and perhaps the best vibes/atmosphere for an NFS game, only rivaled by NFS 2015.

One my favorite things about this game is all the cars the ai and bosses drive. The designs/liveries on them are really good. My favorite cars is Ryan Cooper’s 240SX, the Speed King’s GTO, the Drift King’s RX7, and the cover car. My favorite class is also drag. Drag racing is done really well in this game. I used to be terrible at it but I got better later on and used an old Dodge Challenger as my main drag car. Had some huge meaty tires in the back. Man that was scary to drive cause sometimes the car would just do wheelies off launch it was so unstable but also very fun to drive. I also loved speed class just cause of how insane the races get with both the speeds and the cameras going crazy the faster you go
You make a lot of great points in this video. From the development time to the definition of “vibes”. And how trying new things doesn’t always come out perfect to how most games always lose their “soul” mainly due to lack of creativity/inspiration. Some people might say these are just common things but I’d argue that most people just end up forgetting about them anyways. And you can just tell by looking at the current racing genre. Prostreet isn’t perfect. But you can’t deny the dedication and time they put into this game. Giving it a soul and help making it stand out compared to the older NFS titles. And if they ever make a sequel I’d be all for it.
Honestly this was a great review. Really enjoyed this one. I also liked the mic quality here. Very crispy and clear audio. Great work as always man

This game was way ahead of its time. The game is great but the only gripe I have in this game is the vinyl editor. Rather than showing all the graphics and decals ala NFS 2015 to NFS Unbound for you to pick, it was instead, shows you one-by-one and then pick one. So it's a chore to choose one vinyl for the design you want to do. But thankfully there's a mod for it now.

Its crazy to think that when a theme or genre got stale. The franchise would often spin it in a different direction entirely and innovate in a major way. Instead of what we have now where they just double down on a formula for a decade and if it stops selling they just deem the entire genre obsolete and shut everythign down.

The best part about Pro Street's story is the implication that Ryan Cooper may or may not be the driver from Most Wanted and Carbon. Nobody really knows till this day, it's kind of ambiguous, and people can interpret it differently. I choose to believe Ryan Cooper is the driver from the previous games, and that kind of adds a new level of background to this game that is awesome.

Out of all the Need for Speed Titles, Prostreet is my favorite.
It might not have cops, or illegal racing. but it's a nice break from the traditional formula.
The soundtrack is amazing, cars sound great, especially the Charger and Viper.
They also feel great to drive, all feel completely different from each other.
and so much detail was put into all of the maps in this game.
It's such a shame that it got panned at release.

    • @RooiGevaar19
      @RooiGevaar19 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

imo NFS's "traditional formula" wasn't (only) about cops and illegal racing. Old NFSes were just focused on fast cars, they served as kind of encyclopediae of fast cars, where you get all info about their entries and you can try them out. And I admired that car-focused approach, which can be felt in ProStreet even more than in MW or Carbon.

You have a garage full of cars but you can only race what u could bring to the track. Ome car for each discipline and an extra I believe. And the comment you msde about drifting not being as entertaining is why the modern games aren't as entertaining. You said the reason without noticing it. That is they gave you one if the best drift cars to start. When i switched to other cars it was more challenging because each car drifted differently.

This game inspired so many other current gen games such as GRID, FORZA HORIZON, etc. Oh, and most ppl dont know this but, CarX Drift Racing Online literally has so many Pro Street inspired aspects in their game. From the stickers to the maps such as Ebisu and Mondello Park. Hell, even the vinyl system screams NFS Prostreet, from reflecting vinyls to the ability to shrink and enlarge stickers.
What's my point? Regardless if you liked NFS Pro Street or not, thank the developers! They set the blueprint for so many other festival racing games that many people would not love so much if weren't for this "old" game...
The closest game that gives me a good festival vibe was Forza Horizon 1. I loved how the beginning of the game started and how you progressed.
Pro Street still takes the cake from the scenery, to the announcer screaming while you're weaving through your opponents to take home 1st place, or even running down NEVADA and making one wrong move only to see your car get TOTALED!
Even tuning was gratifying for making your car a MONSTER for knocking seconds off a lap.
I wish newer NFS games gave us back the whole team battles. I think its sick seeing a whole crew of cars representing their team with crazy vinyls and making cars we don't usually see seem "cool". Unlike new NFS games, the team's you have to battle in Pro Street symbolize something you are chasing: Being the CHAMPION and having the STATUS those teams once had.
Also, obtaining their cars they once had was the coolest way of saying : I BEAT YOU!
