    When I was younger, me and my brother used to run around the streets of Brixton and felt perfectly safe😂 Loads of people judge it because of the crime rate, but it's a great community and you get to know everyone there so its not all that bad, the people are lovely

    I’m from Islington. A great place to grow up. Many generations of my family are from Islington including my own Children. We have a canal running right through and close to theatres and museums. We were very privileged to have all this close by for school trips and outings with our parents. We also have beautiful parks. It’s one of the most expensive boroughs because it’s so close to the city.

    Enfield is so green its peaceful and really cheap. It's only a little bit further up from when you used to live in Haringey

      Edmonton, in the southern part of LB Enfield, is awful.

    • @robhingston
      @robhingston 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Edmonton green is the muck at the bottom of Enfield's boot.. Edmonton green is not a great example of English suburbia..
      their is a reason why is so scummy it's called the people that live their ...
      but Enfield Council as tried and they have poured over a billion pounds into Edmonton green over the last 10 years building a new leisure centre new shopping mall and a complete facelift refurbishment like
      New bus station etc
      so it's not a bad looking place and I can think of loads of places in london that are much bigger eye sores then Edmonton green,
      but sadly it they can't refurbish its reputation because the same yobs and chavs are still roaming the streets so the atmosphere is not nice the place is a honey pot for scum and Dogy characters and I do my best to avoid it ...

      robert hingston Most London boroughs contain good parts and bad. In many parts of London you can walk a few minutes and go from a pleasant rich area to a poor high-crime area or vice versa.

      Russiangamer33 Stratford has two sides, E15 and E20. E20 is an expensive area to live in but it does provide a lot of working places and spots to, it has London Stadium, Westfield and the East Village, its by far the best area in Newham, (looks better than E14 Canary Wharf in my opinion) the other side is E15, it has alright apartment and houses and all sorts and it can be dangerous at night, both of them can get very pack up if an West Ham game is on, and don't forget the upcoming IAAF, it will get very crowded, overall, it's a great place to live in. It's the only place in Newham that I will consider someone to live in. The rest, NAH

    • @OfficialHappyCraft
      @OfficialHappyCraft 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Russiangamer33 in both sense, Depending what segment of Stratford, it's a place for rich (E20) and poor (E15)

    I understand that these are your "personal preferences", but I feel your suggestions aren't great for newcomers to London. i've lived here 22 years and Kensington & Chelsea/Hammersmith & Fulham/Islington aren't affordable for any normal person. You'd have to be a millionaire to afford a 3 bed house in any of those locations.
    Go South! Lambeth/Wandsworth/Southwark are such great places to live. Really well connected on the Underground/Overground, and way more vibrant than many of the suburbs in the North/West. Kennington, Balham, Battersea, and Clapham are safe neighbourhoods with tonnes of beautiful houses, whilst Vauxhall, Brixton, Peckham and Borough have great nightlife.

    • @JenDre
      @JenDre  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +vote clarkson who talked about 3 bed houses? I am more talking of rooms in shared accommodations.

    • @voteclarkson
      @voteclarkson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was using house prices merely as an example, as rental/resale are obviously linked. Also two of your "most desirable" areas are actually the most crime ridden - Kensington & Chelsea + Islington

    • @JenDre
      @JenDre  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +vote clarkson yes but the crime is mostly theft.. at least for kensington as it's posh so it's worth burgling houses. I looked more at stabbings and shootings, violence crime. Islington may have rougher areas but very much attracts me in terms of connecting a real london feel with a quite up and coming vibe.
      I just dislike southern london. Greenwich is nice and so are some other parts. but it really doesn't speak to me. no one I know lives there. it's inconvenient for me. as these are my personal recommendations I couldn't mention southern boroughs really. I love the north and west.

    • @mariamihailik5310
      @mariamihailik5310 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily. The boroughs around it (lewisham, woolwich, bermondsey) are quite poor, but greenwich itself is fine. Besides, london is very diverse and on most posh streets, you can probably find some sort of council estate.

    • @Sabotaz80xx
      @Sabotaz80xx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course, London is one of the most economically mixed cities in the world, and that's what I like about it. However this video is talking about boroughs as a whole, and the majority of Greenwich borough, such as Woolwich, Plumstead, Charlton, Abbey Wood, Thamesmead, Eltham, Kidbrooke etc are pretty grim areas with high rates of poverty. The only really nice parts are Greenwich itself, like Westcombe Park, Maze Hill, and parts of Blackheath

    Thanks for this video - and to everyone who made comments. As a single female, of course I want to live somewhere decent as well as safe, near public transport, etc. Especially in a city as expensive and spread out as London, it's hard to know where to start and I loathe moving from place to place.

    It does very much depend on what services you require, tube, overground railway, clubs, shops, libraries,schools, supermarkets, they all matter to different people..

  • @russetmantle1
    @russetmantle1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I live in Leyton in the south of Waltham Forest and I love it. It's just north of Stratford, where the lovely Olympic Park is, and the place has been gradually getting nicer and nicer since the Olympics, also because people priced out of Hackney started choosing to live in Leyton and next door Walthamstow, with the result that a lot of people have been setting up their small businesses there, and every few weeks we've been getting some nice new coffee shop/deli/gym etc. opening up and a few new apartment developments have been springing up. I can choose between the Central Line (Leyton) or the Victoria line (Walthamstow Central, a short bus ride away), or walk round the corner from my house to Leyton Midland Road overground station and be on Hampstead Heath in 25 minutes. Also, if you like Tottenham because it's on the Victoria Line, then Walthamstow is definitely better if you work in central London, because Walthamstow Central is the first stop on the line (but zone 3 and only 2 stops further out than Tottenham Hale), which means you are guaranteed to get a seat on the tube during the morning rush hour. Don't underestimate how much such a small thing can add to your quality of life! Also, Walthamstow Central is on the overground line to Liverpool Street, perfect for the City if you don't fancy the Central Line. (Waltham Forest comprises four main areas: Leyton, Leytonstone slightly east of that, Walthamstow slightly north west, and Chingford to the north of the other three - I wouldn't recommend Chingford because not only are the transport options there much more limited but it's also in zone 4/5, which will add a lot to your transport costs.)

    • @russetmantle1
      @russetmantle1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more thing, public transport strategy-wise: if, like me, you choose to live in an outer borough and you're going to be working in central London, an important question to ask yourself is this: "how will I get to work if my usual route is disrupted (e.g. line suspended because of a signal failure, closed because of a tube strike etc.)?" These things don't happen often, but they do happen. You can cycle, of course, but if there's a full tube strike on even that will take a long time because the traffic will be jam-packed. Certainly in the case of "minor delays" on the tube you just want to sit it out because it'll be resolved soon, most likely. "Severe delays" are trickier; usually I still choose to wait it out unless the driver specifically advises passengers find another route because I have often jumped off to take a longer route only to find it would have been quicker to wait. In Leyton, if the Central Line goes down I have the Victoria Line and vice versa. If both go down I have the option of a bus to Stratford and then a combination of Jubilee line and something else, depending on where I have to be. Even during a total tube strike I can get to my office just off Tottenham Court Road by a) getting up very early, b) getting a bus to Stratford before they get too busy, c) overground to Camden High Road - because Stratford is the first station on the route and therefore the only place you will have a chance of getting on the train at all during a full tube strike - and either bus towards Euston or else just walk it from Camden because I'll have got up very early anyway. You may deduce from this that Camden is an ideal place to live, and certainly, if you can afford it, it's great. I can't afford it, though. :-) Anyway, the point is, it's best not to live somewhere where you are totally dependent on one single route into the centre of town.

    I am trying to decide which tube stations to consider. I will work as a supply teacher all over East London. Commuting cost, accessibility and time need to be considered. Any ideas Londoners? Zone 2 would be ideal but I am open to zone 3 as well. The place I enjoyed the most when I visited last summer was Greenwich market(Cutty Sark). It felt safe, was charming and had a neighbourhood feel. I didn't know it was on the pricey side as it is not central. Sorry Jen, I just don't know where else I can inquire about this. x

    Islington is really expensive and always has been, north and west London are pretty much expensive and quite boring, East London is okay but would never live there, I highly recommend South London, Greenwich is a really great place to live, as is Herne Hill/Brixton/Clapham, south London is so underrated

    I have heard so many horror stories about Tottenham and even the Tottenham Hale area. I found a nice place to stay around there with good connections and during the day it seemed fine. Idk what to believe as some people say they've been threatened or even assaulted in one place while others say it's very safe. This all happened at night though. Are you generally someone who is rarely out past midnight?

    TBH, everywhere is unaffordable in London, compromise is necessary for anyone who isn't a gazillionaire. It is important to point out that all boroughs have both affluent and rougher areas. For example, I live in Greenwich- when I tell people this, people think of the beautiful Georgian houses, the meridian line and the greenness- however, the bit I live in is much less glamorous- Stephen Lawrence was stabbed only streets away. Also, I don't think there is any such thing as a boring borough!
