  • "Death in the Morning" examines the standardisation of precious metal with the touchstone in the ancient world. This innovation stimulated trade from Greece to Persia, ultimately causing the construction of a huge commercial center and library at Alexandria which included Ptolemy's star tables. This wealth of astronomical knowledge aided navigators during the age of discovery 14 centuries later following the introduction of lateen sails and sternpost rudders. Mariners discovered that the compass's magnetised needle did not actually point directly north. Investigations into the nature of magnetism by Gilbert led to the discovery of electricity by way of the sulphur ball of von Guericke. Further interest in atmospheric electricity at the Ben Nevis weather station led to Wilson's cloud chamber which in turn allowed development of both Watson-Watt's radar and (by way of Rutherford's insights) nuclear weaponry. This is the best show ever conceived by human beings! I followed this when it first came out I've forgotten about it. We're on our way to see the movie: Oppenheimer which just opened yesterday, July 21 2023! Been to Nagasaki too few years ago.

what a marvelous communicator he is. a brilliant bit of story telling, plucking seemingly inconsequential threads from apparently nowhere and weaving them together which then leads to a completely unexpected conclusion. terrific TV.

Every college student should be made to read his book and watch the series. Today college graduates are ignoramuses.

This is the BBC at its best and I remember watching this on British TV, probably in late 1970s, or early 80s. The end is particularly poiniant with what is happening in Ukraine at the moment. The sound drops out in a couple of places, but stick with it - it is well worth it.

The first time I saw it Keith, I was 17 (in 90s). It was eye-opening. Really great stuff.

It was BBC, was on PBS, when there was little cable, in about 1980.

Burke, WAS, on single shows in the 1970s that were not "connections" and the 4 seasons, began "rerun overlap" in the 1980's, then after 1990, they become hard to find. His movie about the end of man on earth, is coming true, pretty much as he says it would!!! That one is the 2 hour conclusion to the end of all his T.V. work. (He was on the internet, but, it was an e-mail site, with a history???) The "4 series" are around, so where is the documentary??? It is called: "The Day After Tomarrow." @jamesmoore5630 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Right, connections was in the 1980s and there were 4 series. There was a movie(Documentary) "The Day After Tomarrow," that is like a calendar from 1990, to 2050!!! He not only nails everything, he uses the real tools and locations where they each took place!!! Brother James OSB

The worse of the BBC is not difficult to discover - The Burke Special, like so many other BBC programmes, was mostly destroyed through its 'wiping policy'. Cultural vandals the lot of them.

Burke is now 80, and "The Day The Universe Changed" is his last available series. (I do not know if The Day After Tomarrow was recorded). 4-19-22. Brother James OSB

Wasn‘t von Guerike the mayor of Magdeburg, not Regensburg. The vacuum experiment with the two half spheres was done in Magedeburg as well.

The Burke Special was superb, and like other BBC programmes of the time was wiped - four out of five series erased. I have an intense dislike of the BBC.
