My Uncle's father was a Pacific veteran, He fought on the USS California a ship that was raised when it was sunk during the Attack On Pearl Harbor and saw combat at Saipan, While there one of his fellows was killed by a Zero fighter and shot dead in the torso next to him and came back home a police officer and plain clothes detective, He also had another uncle Jim who was in the Signal Corps in Germany post VE Day on occupation when the country was split. The Asiatic Pacific theatre was brutal and many soldiers and marines became hardened veterans facing the relentless Japanese foe unlike their counterparts in Europe
