Your pronunciation is perfect and you got the two dialects correct. I applaud you so much for taking time out to do this. You seem like you've invested so much interest and passion for another country and that truly is admirable. Thank you for that, your work is much appreciated :) - A Viet Appreciating your Work
I appreciate these videos... I am working front of house at a pho' restaurant, and like to tease the kitchen with a word or two of Vietnamese each week.
Mark is a natural born teacher. I like his presentation. I like the way he explains all the little dots and strokes above and below the letters. I like also that he gets compliments from native speakers on his pronunciation. G'donya Mark. I hope you have part III in the pipeline.
Thanks for the interest guys. A new language class has been added - more about food with occasional detours into other random subjects. Hope you enjoy!
Wow, great lesson in Viet pronunciation & pointing out Viets’ reverence for foods/eating by way of its language usage that I’ve never noticed before. Thanks!
These lessons are wonderful, having the subtitle added is such a big help because the way I’ve been learning is by sounds alone and having the text along with it is fantastic because it’s getting a better grasp on what the word is. Thanks VERY much for doing these this way
Thanks a lot Mark . Th'at's a great way to discover vietnamese . I have a lot a fun discovering this language , and this culture with you . You're a good teacher . Your videos are helpful .
Mark!! I love your videos so much! I really appreciate the time you've taken out of your daily activity to make an upload these; you have an amazing accent and you put a coolness into learning Vietnamese. Thanks again!
Hi Rusty! I LOVE your language videos (all both of them! 🤣) It is especially pleasing that you add history and culture. I am traveling to Vietnam from the US in December and would welcome more of your lessons (even though this one is quite old). There's nothing else I've found that compares. Many blessings 💜
Hi Mark. Many thanks for the excellent videos. You are an excellent teacher. I have been trying to understand the intonation for some time now. You made it clear in just a few minutes. Many thanks again.
Thanks for the very interesting video Mark. Besides learning Vietnamese, I also enjoy the Vietnamese culture insight. I just started to learn a few words of Vietnamese lately for my trip to Vietnam in march, I appreciate it you break down the example sentences giving the meaning of the smaller parts. Cam on!
Ít is a real pleasure to watch your videos - you have an very engaging and light-hearted way of being. And all the background knowledge makes the learning so much richer. Cám ơn, Mark :)
It's really interesting to watch a foreigner teaching Vietnamese on TH-cam :) and i should say your Vietnamese is cute, both pronunciation and the way you use it
Hi Mark, thanks a lot for your vid's about the Vietnamese language. We, my wife and I, will come to Vietnam in April and travel from Hanoi to the south. I want to speak the language as I I can and you have helped me lot. Not only about the language, but also about the background of the culture. Tôi là Eric, cam on!
I just stumbled across this video and subscribed to the rest. As a part time resident in Vietnam (6 months a year) I enjoyed your (mostly) southern accent!
Your pronunciation is very good :D I'm studying abroad in Canada now, and lots of people ( I think all of people except Vietnamese) can't say my name. My name is Nhi, but they always call Ni. That's why when someone askes me about my name, I will say my name's Ni, lol.
Thanks Mark. Another brilliant video and very useful. I can't wait to go back to Vietnam next year around Tet and try out my Vietnamese. Hopefully I'll get to Hue this time. Keep up the good work.
Lovely work Mark. I love your comparison between NGON and the liaison in HANG ON. Absolutely accurate. I use SINGER to compare and instruct my students how to pronounce NG sound but they struggle a lot. Thanks a lot for your hint. Thank you for spreading the Vietnamese language.
Only ever heard Nguyen as Win and Vietnam as in ham no narm. Been to Vietnam a dozen times and certainly don't speak fluent Vietnamese but these are two words I have taken notice of. By the way been to Hue three times and it is beautiful and food sensational.Keep up your good work
I'm preparing to teach Vietnamese for foreigners. Watching your video really helped me a lot. Now I know what foreigners are thinking and feeling about Vietnamese. Thanks to you I know some tips to make people pronounce "ng" sound (which you said that's probably the most difficult sound for foreigners) Thank you so much and I hope there'll be more videos about Vietnamese made by you again. Thank you for loving Vietnam.❤️
Tremendous video Mark. I have learned more practical Vietnamese in your few videos than many of the paid programs i use. I hope you can product more. Regards, Chris
Thanks Mark, this is the best way for me to learn some Vietnamese as I have been here for a year and have found learning foundation quite useless - your videos really do arm me with useful knowledge
His explanation is excellente, so much better than other vienamese video. I could understand cleary. If he has online-edu web-site, although not for free, I would apply for that for sure.
Your Vietnamese is so good!! I've tried to show some English teachers how to pronounce "ng" so they can call the name of their students correctly (for example "Ngọc", "Nguyễn", "Ngân"), but they couldn't I really like this video and the way you speak our language ^^~ Thank you!
I'm heading to Vietnam at the end of July and I find your videos very helpful and interesting! I think I almost got the 'ngon' pronounciation right... ;)
Thanks for videos. Would be interesting to see you do a language lesson with a local Vietnamese (like your casual teaching style that does away with the boring classroom setting)
Should be title "Part II, Pronouncing Ngon." Very helpful with the "hang on" tip. I practiced out on my run today, and think I've got it! Based on other countries I've been to, being able to say "it's delicious" is at the top of my list.
Thank you for this video! I've been in Viet Nam for over three years, thought Hue was really interesting (especially the Citadel) and find the language difficult (at best) to learn, yet your videos make it easy. I know that regional dialects impact the language, almost to the point that a citizen from one region may not be understood in another. How universally understood and used are the phrases you cover in this video? Most of the other videos on TH-cam are difficult to follow, I wish you made more. Do you have a source you recommend for learning the language?
You are awesome. I am Vietnamese, and I always have to find the way to teach my American husband some of my language, and I guess I can let him watch your videos instead. lol.
Thank you for your videos! I've been in Viet Nam for five years and haven't been able to adopt the language. I've watched other teaching channels, but gained very little. From yours, however, I've been able to retain quite a bit more. Regarding hesitancy to express dislike for any food, what I've experienced follows: A Vietnamese friend in Vinh, Nghe An joined me at the province's best restaurant, American Steak, for a meal. He struggled through the curry, but refused to admit he didn't like it. l told him I'd eat it and he could get something else, but he insisted on finishing it. Me: You don't like that, do you? Them: Yes, I like it a little bit.
Cháu là người Việt, bác phát âm chuẩn, hay bác ạ :D hehe. Cháu chúc bác tiếp tục phát triển khả năng tiếng Việt của mình và công việc dạy học này nhé :)
The thing about the Nguyen name is that nowadays people who have that name are NOT related to the Nguyen royal family (that would make 40% of the population noble, which is ridiculous). Back in the days, people with the last name Nguyễn Phúc or Nguyễn Phước would be related, but one of the emperors decided to change their names to just Tôn (or Tôn Nữ for females) so it's different from the general population. It's rarer to run into people with the names Tôn or Tôn Nữ, but they would be ones whose ancestors had royal relations.
How long have you been in vietnam and learning vietnamese? I personally think Vietnamese is not easy to speak (especially to American) , but you know what, you have been doing it very wonderfully !
Omg i think your right about the Vietnamese and good because my fiancé who is Vietnamese she looks so happy when she eats even just a simple meal she becomes very happy,,, By the way she’s the reason I’m learning to speak Vietnamese to talk to her and to officially ask her father if I can marry her in Vietnamese cuz no one but her speaks English in her family and I’m traveling to Vietnam next year to meet her family and I was wondering if you had a video explaining how to go about doing that
man this guy has the Vietnamese accent for a foreigner, a talent that not many possess.
From a friend to another. Get a Vietnamese wife! Listening to her all day, the accent will be yours to possess. :))
Your pronunciation is perfect and you got the two dialects correct. I applaud you so much for taking time out to do this. You seem like you've invested so much interest and passion for another country and that truly is admirable. Thank you for that, your work is much appreciated :)

Mark!! I love your videos so much! I really appreciate the time you've taken out of your daily activity to make an upload these; you have an amazing accent and you put a coolness into learning Vietnamese. Thanks again!
Another aussie to visit this wonderful country for the first time with my partner. Miss the place already. Many thanks for the great tips.
It's common in Thailand as well to ask if someone has eaten yet. Thanks for the language and cultural education, very useful!

Troi oi Mark, you speak Vietnamese so well, you are a good teacher. Great video !
Hi Mark. Many thanks for the excellent videos. You are an excellent teacher. I have been trying to understand the intonation for some time now. You made it clear in just a few minutes. Many thanks again.
Wonderfully presented! Your explanation on how to pronounce 'ngon' using "hang on" was exceptionally helpful. Thank you.

How the hell do you transition so effortlessly between fluent English and a pretty darn well pronounced Vietnamese accent?
Only ever heard Nguyen as Win and Vietnam as in ham no narm. Been to Vietnam a dozen times and certainly don't speak fluent Vietnamese but these are two words I have taken notice of.
By the way been to Hue three times and it is beautiful and food sensational.Keep up your good work

it's nice to hear a foreigner speaking Vietnamese. I bet there is no one can speak Northern Vietnamese better than you. Great job! :)
I will be travelling to Hue next week and so this video is just what I need.
I never thought about my other language in this way. Thanks for the new perspective.

In Korean, 'have you eaten rice yet?' is a way of greeting too!
Thanks. Fourth time back since '68.
Oh I just watched it again, you really did well at the last time lol. Hope you have more interesting videos in the future like this! I like it :)
Có lẽ chú rất yêu đấy nước của chúng cháu! Cảm ơn chú nhiều ạ!

Hi, great videos!
I first watched Mark many years ago. Good value, but unfortunately mostly northern diaglect when I live primarily in the South.
Awesome man, thanks!
a great VNmese Poet, Xuân Diệu: "Tháng giêng NGON như cặp môi gần" or "The January's as delicious as the inviting lips"
January is the Tết
I don't know what to do when there are two accents above a letter... Like with the words Nguyễn... There is wave but also roof
ngữ âm,ngữ điệu của anh tốt quá ạ ! Very nice
I like the way you pronounce a same word but with different northern and southern accent.
Your pronunciation is very well.
That's really great .. But where is the third part ?? :(
The thing about the Nguyen name is that nowadays people who have that name are NOT related to the Nguyen royal family (that would make 40% of the population noble, which is ridiculous). Omg your Vietnamese is amazing
