    After reading about his upbring I have the most highest respect for him. It was like my upbringing. He's the reason that I like the Raiders especially when he was playing. I can go back and watch old Raider games. He was really cool and still is and he did a good job raising his sons along with his wife . Good job Howie!

    I grew up in KC, and we hated the Raiders. But on the sneak tip, I loved those old Raiders team -- Especially Howie and Lyle!

    I think Howie Long retired at the perfect time. After the 93 season the Raiders were a dysfunctional mess until John Gruden arrived in 98. I remember Howie Long saying in an interview shortly after he retired that "he didn't want to walk funny". I think that was in relation to how many surgeries he probably went through.

One of a kind Football Player, always for the Team. They don’t make Them like that anymore, Howie definitely deserves His Enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Howie was one of the greats. You asked if he made a mistake retiring when he did. He made the right choice. He watched his friend Lyle die so young. He also said when he retired it was taking him close to an hour to get out of bed in the morning. I've forgotten how many surgeries he's had to endure post retirement. I do know the last one he recently had to endure was to make his arms and shoulders the same length on both sides, so I'd say he was right.

    There is a gross inaccuracy in this presentation. Howie played Pop Warner football as a 10 year old. He was a guard and defensive tackle, playing on the 12 and under team. As a 9 year old, he pushed around a lot of 12 year olds on practice. I have a picture from the Charlestown Patriot with both of us in uniform.
    The atmosphere for school as Howie was transitioning to teenage years was horrific. Busing had come to Boston, and the schools were war zones. Sending him to Milford was the best move, but it was up to Howie, and he never looked back.

    Lyle AL -Zay- Doh is how you pronounce his name. I am wondering if Lyle introduced Howie to steroids. I am not implying he took steroids, it's just that Lyle is infamous for dying from steroid use and being very honest about it. Lyle showed great courage discussing his steroid use and trying to stop those who might have the same interest. Long gaining 40 lbs over one summer in college is almost unbelievable. Long was a menace to all he played against. He is a Hall of Famer, but his long-lasting second career is just as impressive. Five years is a long time in national sports broadcasting. How long has Howie been on air ? I'm guessing 30+ years. Of course, he made the right decision. He knew much like Travis Kelcie that he had a second career in entertainment. Playing his pro ball in Los Angles, he made a lot of contacts. At 6ft 4 280 lbs with no rolls of fat, there was a place for him. He started in movies but got onto being a NFL studio host. As I mentioned above, his long tenure and his down to earth way of explaining football will no doubt get him into a second Hall of Fame. This time, it may be a star on Hollywood Boulevard.

    Having the potential to play longer doesn’t make it the right thing to do. Injuries stack up and years after you quit those injuries will haunt you.
    There are plenty of limping, arthritic old men who never played pro or even college who suffer daily from old sports injuries!
    Long seems like an intelligent man who probably made the correct decision. Unlike his former Raiders teammate Lyle Alzado (who was a personal friend of mine) who lost his life very early due to using PEDs to play professionally!

  • @amelierenoncule
    @amelierenoncule 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Long is quoted as saying, after the '84 game against the Bears, that he was NEVER so beat-up. That he almost needed help, afterwards, to his motorcar. During the tape of that contest, one can see him tearing up...after Jimbo Covent 'destroyed ' him for the umpteenth time. BTW, this was the one when Ray Guy refused to enter & play QB.

    But you wonder what happens if Rozelle does not stop the Raiders from Trading Howie to the Bears and then using that pick to the Colts to Draft John Elway. The Raiders won a Super Bowl in 1983 with Plunkett, how many more could they have won with Marcus Allen and Elway. Howie was great, but Greg Townsend had better stats. Then again the Raiders could have Drafted Dan Marino.

    From about 1985 If he wasn't injured he had to be double or treble teamed on every play, or he would just break up the offensive backfield run or pass.
