- In this one, I detail the five steps of rock tumbling quart types. I loaded up my tumbler with agates, jasper, petrified/agatized wood, and more! The end results look great, so I hope you enjoy and will have another one out soon!
Make sure to follow me on social media as I am always posting random rock, fossil, and shell related stuff, current projects, sneak peaks of upcoming videos, or anything that doesn't make it into a video!

I’ve watched at least 6 different intro to tumbling videos, and honestly yours is the best so far. You show everything and explain everything, and you’ve provided more info about the mineral side of things than anyone else I’ve watched. Thanks!
Thank you so much! That truly means a lot! 😊
I agree with you so much. Thanks for taking the time to do this video
a tip if you like, take the plastic lid(s) off of butter tubs, cottage cheese tubs/etc,cut out a circle that is slightly smaller than the metal lid and poke a hole in the center.put the plastic disc on the top of the lid, then the washer and nut will lock it down.this is an easy way to make a wear strip to help save the lid from getting a groove cut into it.i have just made 5 or 6 and it took about 10 minutes.i used my drywall circle cutter but i think cutting them with scissors is just as easy.
I just love seeing the transformation of rough rocks...just beautiful! Thanks for the tips👍
“If you watch a lot of my videos” 😂😂😂I’ve seen so many were practically dating. Lmao
Thank you, motivating my tumbler has been sitting around mainly because I wasn’t seeing results and didn’t want to ruin a beautiful specimen but you’ve taught me such a simple way that I’m going to start polishing them. Again thank you and much ❤️
Thank you for sharing such a thorough video. Your results are amazing!😃👍
Thanks for sharing! How amazing! Can’t wait to get a tumbler! I live in Northern Nevada where rocks are everywhere!
Thank you, I will "try" to follow your timetable for tumbling. I'm always anxious to get results in a hurry!
Wow, those turned out great! I just love that process of taking a rough stone and making it smooth. My problem would be in waiting for several weeks for the finished piece! I'd want to have several tumblers going at once, I think, with rocks in different stages, so each week or so I'd have something finished. Anyway, this was quite enjoyable. Thanks for showing the before layout and the after layout, that was very helpful, too.
Very helpful, thank you. Such a transformation 😲 x
Very glad to hear that I could help! 😊
Super helpful. Thank you so much
Great video Theo. Got the spanking new tumbler for Christmas ad betwee Michigan Roc’s, MeMiner , and You I’m gonna go for it... Thnks for making it plain Bro
Love the petrified wood
Excellent tutorial my friend!. That is as a complete tumbler tutorial as I have ever seen. I have seen a few that used a vibratory after steps one or two and they did not take as long to achieve a bright finish as using the tumbler. Good job Theo. Havagudun and stay safe.
IMO, an easier way to clean your tumbler and rocks, is after each stage, clean the rocks and tumbler. Then put the rocks back into tumbler and add 1 1/2 tablespoons of Borax. Run it for at least 30 minutes, if not an hour or two. This will get all of the grit out and will give smoother, shiner rocks. Hope this helps.
Great Video! I am running my very first ever batch. I am starting with Crater of Diamonds agate and jasper. Thank you for the informative video!!
Thank you so much! I'm very glad to hear that you liked it! I bet they come out looking great! Crater of diamonds agate is some awesome stuff!
Really enjoyed watching and all the tips. I will admit I get confused by so many different videos and so many different ideas on the best results. I did shaved bar soap but only two hours when the tumbler started acting up on me. So I really don't know if it helped much at all. I will be giving dawn soap a try on my next run. Thanks for sharing !
I agree completely! It can get confusing when you do some research and see how many different ways there are to go about tumbling, this is just what I have found to work best for me through a lot of trial and error! I hope this helps at all, and I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed! 😊
Wow that septarian nodule was miniaturized after you took it out lol. Thank you for making this guide! This is exactly everything I wanted to know, I just wanna tumble agates jasper, quartz and pet wood mostly. Im getting a lortone double barrel tumbler soon, its my first tumbler. i didnt want to get a piece of crap that wears out in 3 months lol. Thanks again Theo, you helped out a noob rock tumbler big time!
I like all the helpful information ....
But im LOVING your laugh lol...☺🥰
Thanks. Great tips!
I’m going to start this. Question: What do you do with your polished rocks? Sell? Make jewelry? Put in an aquarium?
Great video. I'm new at this. Someone said that after each cycle, you should drain the tumbler, wash off the rocks and then add water and 1 1/2 teaspoons of Borax and tumble for about 10 minutes to clean everything. What's your feeling on that? Thanks.
Thank' s for that video.
Good job bro! Thank you!
Glad to help! And thank you so much for watching! 😊
This was a great video thank you!
Thank you I have never tumbled before.
Great! I’ve never tumbled before!
Thanks for the training for the overall process. I’m currently on live in Northern CA , but my first wife was from Clyde Park, unfortunately it remains her final rest spot .
So helpful Thank you!
Thank you for the advice ❤
This is a great video. I want to start doing this with my kids . Can you recommend a kit for us to do this? Thank you👍🏼
Great job mijo....I can't paint them shine easier 😍😂😂
Great video! I've just started my second batch of tumbled rocks including my first Montana moss agate and a collection of jasper from flathead lake!
As someone new to collecting and tumbling rocks, I have a very hard time identifying what I may be working with, and have as such lost some good pieces to tumbling. Do you have any suggestions for determining hardness when you can't correctly identify the rock?
Since many of my river and lake rocks are already rounded from natural tumbling, how should I adjust the tumbling schedule?
The 5th step secret step was that just washing up liquid soap and also if it is can you use that secret step on all tumbling rocks or just quartz based ones
Nice video, good tips. The big surprise for me was you using Dawn, instead of a flaked soap. Good job.
TALKING ABOUT PETRIFIED WOOD, HOW ABOUT, AMBER,?!?!? I PERSONALY LOVE CARNELIAN, JASPER, AMBER, CHALCEDONY,PIRITA,....THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING, THE VARIETY, AND PROCESS OF MAKING THEM SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!.
That was super helpful! Thank I!!
Amazing video thank you!! I've been chewing threw rocks and months and it's been annoying... Can I learn the secret fifth step?
Of course!😄 the extremely super secret fifth step is 48 hours tumbling in soap😄 it REAAALLY helps bring up their shine😄
Awesome, thanks
that crystal pocket one you said was not good for tumbling was beautiful. I live in NW Oregon but I find it hard to find agates like that
That sounds like a circus act:
Jasper and the Tumbling Agates.
I'm a newbie to tumbling so I have lots of questions as I learn. I was wondering why some people only use about a half cup of water in the tumbler but i see some use much more? And same thing with the media, some use it and some don't. I dont want to waste my time doing it wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I love your videos.
This is an awesome video. Really enjoyed it. I'm a newbie into rock hunting, cutting, polishing and tumbling. This video is very helpful. Thanks for taking the time you show us your process! Do you ever burp your containers?
You can buy grit from Harbor Freight? Are there different kinds? I’m new to rock tumbling. Finding it very difficult to identify rocks
What grit is your pre polish?😊
My son is looking to get into the hobby, and I was wondering what advice you can give him starting out. Also, he is looking at getting the Lortone 33B. Would you recommend this tumbler? Any other tumblers you would recommend? He would also like to know what companies, websites or stores you would recommend for sourcing rough stones to tumble? We are in Northeast Kansas, and I am unsure if there are any type of rocks in our area that are worth hunting for tumbling.
I am SO sorry for not seeing your comment sooner! I was not notified for some reason. The lortone 33b is a fantastic model! You are pretty much sureto get a great quality machine with any lortone tumbler, but the 33b is a wonderful model to start with! As for sourcing tumbling rough, I would absolutely recommend the Rock shed in South Dakota! They have an outstanding selection, ship extremely fast, and have very good prices! I am unfamiliar with Kansas geology but I would be more than happy to see what I can sleuth up for you! 😊
So on a typical four step tumbler add the pellets AFTER the first two stages are done?
I do not know why I didn't get a notification for your comment but I am so sorry that I did not see it sooner! Yes, you add the pellets when you move from fine grit to pre polish, and then every step after!
Can you reuse a grit on a different batch of rocks as long as it is the same stage. And if so how many times would be feasible?
I got some quartz dalmatian jasper and a few other agates in my first run of coarse grit. They were fairly smooth already I think I should have started maybe on stage 2 or possibly 3. I'm talking river pebble smooth to start. I'm mainly looking for a polish. I dont see you guys using foam blocks mixed in. Do they not help
What machine are you using for this?... there are so many on the market.. but a lot of negative reviews regarding motor failures and melt downs.
I use my trusty lortone. They are a little bit more expensive but they are amazingly reliable. I have burnt out many tumblers before getting my lortone and my only regret was not getting one sooner. Mine has been running every day for 3 years straight and still runs like it's brand new!😄
Also can you explain what you think the last step (soap) actually does? I’ve tried to tumble but they come out very dull. Mine are smooth like yours but not shiny
It is often referred to as a burnishing step. After the stones come out of step 4 they are technically polished, but the will still have a microscopic texture. This texture holds onto the polish powder and dilutes the overall shine because it is basically still dirty. The fifth step is to allow the soap the truly penetrate the stone and clean all compound off of any surface of the stone. So in short, the soap step is really the Rock tumbling equivalent of putting your Stones into a dishwasher to make them sparkly clean. Hope this helps! 😊
I'm about to start tumbling, and I do have one question...people say run loads of similar hardness. OK, that makes sense...but how much tolerance is there in 'similar?' For instance, apartite is 5.0, and lapis lazuli is 5.5-6.0. Can they be run together, or is that too much difference?
Great question! From my experience, I've found that it depends on what hardness range you are running. If you're running harder Stones like quartz, which is generally around 7, you will a higher tolerance with mixing, so you can easily get away with mixing hardnesses of 6-8. Whereas if the batch is softer, for example around 5 or lower, you will have less wiggle room as far as how much the hard Stones will affect the softer Stones and only have about a range of 1 on the hardness scale, so between 5 and 6. So theoretically, there should be no problem with running Lapis in a batch of apatite, but I would not put anything harder than the Lapis in the batch. I hope that makes sense and was any help!
@@TheoKellison That did help, thanks!
Do you find the rocks yourself? Or do you buy them?
The stone in the video
Time 16:07
What is it called ?
Is it expensive ?
Thanks
What’s the purpose of the dawn soap
👍
*me transforming into a rockhound*
Do you have store?
Do you sell untumbled agate stones?
Please tell me the name of the necessary materials, thank you
Hola soy de argentina, si podes y queres, como se hace el proceso, espero tu respuesta , sino me podes dar la informacion no hay problema
I hope that sink isn’t part of your home’s sewer or septic system. The residue from the dirt and grits will mess up your plumbing.
That noise in background is not loud

you use way too much grit
Great video thank you!
