A History of Nickelodeon (Through 2007)

- This is a basic history of Nickelodeon, and the controversy behind why certain shows were cancelled.
Check out my channel. I have lots of random (but mostly stupid) videos. I also have a website: zeehive.net
Corrected Paragraph: "In my opinion, the television programs that made Nickelodeon go down the toilet were Tak & the Power of JuJu, Power Rangers Samurai, Dragon Ball GT, Back at the Glarnyard, & The PENGUins of Madasgacar. The good television programs that used to air on Nickelodeon include: The Fairly OddParents, The Ren & Stimpy Show, The Amanda Show, The Drake & Josh Show, Kenan & Kel, All That, Double Dare 2000, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Nickelodeon Guts, Get the Picture, & Double Dare"
Thank you for not deleting this video, all of my favorites from this era are all gone
I've been watching this video like crazy when I was 7. Going back to it now is like a nostalgic smack in the nuts.
hey any of you guys know about my grandpa? he watched nickelodeon and he liked back at the barnyard but he called it "the bull with udders show" crazy right?
Tiny Toon Adventures, Pinky and the Brain, and Animaniacs were 3 of the cartoons shown in syndication on Nick. Others including the majority of the Jim Henson portfolio (Muppet Babies, The Muppet Show, Muppet specials, etc.) Inspector Gadget, Yogi Bear, Looney Tunes, Gumby, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts specials.
I'd say that Nickelodeon aired more just a handful of reruns of existing animated and live-action shows. There was The Alvin Show, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Gumby, Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, Bananaman, Beetlejuice, Tintin, Garfield and Friends, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Underdog, the Filmation Star Trek animated cartoon, Land of the Lost (90's version), Ship to Shore, Belle and Sebastian, The Adventures of the Little Prince, Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea, The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Maple Town, Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, Adventures of the Little Koala, Doctor Snuggles, Noozles, Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, The Littl' Bits, Lassie, Dennis the Menace, The Monkees, My Three Sons, The Donna Reed, I Spy, The Bad News Bears, Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp, The Patty Duke Show, Mister Ed, Mork & Mindy, The Adventures of Superman, F Troop, Ace Ventura, The Wonder Years, The Brady Bunch, Hangin' With Mr. Cooper, Clueless, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Men in Black: The Series, and there was a cartoon packaging called Cartoon Kablooey, which I believe showed classic Paramount and UPA cartoons (the same cartoons were featured on season 1 of Weinerville.)
In addition, they had a ton of acquisition cartoons, live-action, movies, and TV-movies on Special Delivery which changed every week- some of which were "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", "The White Seal", "Pssst! Hammerman's After You!" and "Wren & the Bear".
Largely a good summary, but one major thing: no mention of Double Dare? There's a good chance we'd have no Nickelodeon today if it weren't for Double Dare. Nick struggled in the ratings until Double Dare premiered, then there was no looking back.
I haven't saw Chalk zone in FOREVER!
I LOVE Zoey 101
tori berry I love the mighty b! And chakzone!
I liked Back at the Barnyard. When it first came out. Stopped liking it. Yeah. And did anyone catch the change to the face at the end of the frame?
Really old, but ahead of its time with the presentation and editing!
Me in 2008: 'Orange slime logo we still see today..'
Me in 2020: 'Yeah...About that...'
Those "upcoming shows that was bound to happen in 2008 have been already cancelled at an average 3 years after their debut. Little did he know 2008/2009 was a dramatic change in Nickelodeon. Logo Change! Zoey 101 ended and very well missed! Lots of shows have been long gone tbh. Nickelodeon's biggest mistake was this logo change. This new logo makes me not wanna watch tv no more. Such sad
This is a cool, and nicely done video. You have a clear voice and get the message across.
Gosh, watching this was so nostalgic, I miss so many of these shows and the new one's are so lame. I'm surprised you didn't mention Fanboy and Chum Chum...I seriously can't watch that show without falling asleep, it's so bad -_-
I must admit...I screamed for joy when I saw Face! I loved him when I was little and was crushed when they took him away :(
He didn't mention it because it wasn't heard of yet, until the following year 2009 when it premiered.
Awesome commentary! I'm thinking about doing a history of Nickelodeon segment too!
i liked back at the barnyard
@Johnnylightning93
The show started in '77 as pinwheel, but it was relaunched as nickelodeon in 1979. The time of 77-79 was basically the pre-history of nickelodeon, if you will.
I agree. The new logo is HIDEOUS
4:44 Oh, I remember that episode. It creeped me out as a kid.
I remember watching Snick as a kid. Those were the days!
Global Warming Skeptic I don't remember Doug,but I do remember Jimmy Neutron,Mlaatr,etc.
everything in 2000's
No worries. You can go to your nearest DVD Video store and buy all three seasons of "The Angry Beavers", "ChalkZone", "CatDog", & "Invader Zim." As an additional suggestion, you can sign up for NETFLIX & Zune Video via for your XBOX from Microsoft video game system and watch "The Angry Beavers", "ChalkZone", "CatDog", & "Invader Zim" on those subscription TV services, which are provided for you via Microsoft Corporation, LLC. which was founded by Willard C. Gates, Jr. back in the year of 1987.
THANK YOU! YOU ARE A GENIUS! I LOVE YOUR VIDEO!....you don't know how many questions you've answered just now! i noticed tht Cartoon Network is going thru the same thing. But anyways, i was on a foreign nickelodean website (i think Japan?) and they show only popular nick shows tht r usually old (hey arnold, doug, etc) which r more successful than ours 2day bc they notice the ratings.
Any chance that you've ever considered doing a more up to date version of this? I mean, don't get me wrong, this is great and all, but, it seems that ever since 2008, things got a whole lot worse. Remember when they changed their logo? Or better yet, remember how they stopped airing classic sitcoms on Nick at Nite in exchange for ones that are not so old? Those guys at Viacom are just missing the point of Nickelodeon's true purpose: To Entertain Kids.
Great vid, but consider an update.
Nick used to originally switch to nick@nite at 8 on weeknights but in the mid-to-late 90s they extended regular programming til 10 with a two hour block called the nickel-o-zone which was similar to teenNICK in the sense that it was geared towards older kids.
At 3:25 that was Ren & Stimpy: APC (Adult Party Cartoon). That show was shown on Spike from 2003-2004.
I actually grew up during the pinball era of Nick! I would love it if they created a RetroNick (80's-90's) with shows that I grew up with like Mr. Wizard, YCDTOTV, NickRocks, leading into the 90's with shows like Doug, CatDog and Ren and Stimpy. If some TV executive with a brain comes up with this it would be great!
Lord of Savior in heaven, please give me my wish that I will be reborn as my new life back in June 19th, 1997 to prevent autism by watching educational channels on tv, learning about spelling my name with words speak with my first words and playing toys, interventions and games, when I can be a 2 year old in 1999, spend more times with my family in Sterling and new friends in Sterling Elementary School when I can be a 5 year old in 2002 so they can draw and paint a picture, write on a book, making arts and crafts and play and exercise inside and outside in the community with me and get IPhone 1 when I can be a 10 year old in 2007 as a second chance after you give my sister, Jennifer and her friend, Dylan Lewis their wish that they will be reborn back in June 20th, 1993 and altered the past back in 2001 so the 9/11 terrorists attacks on the World Trade Center has been foiled forever.
Random Cartoons was never released. It saddens me to see Nick come so far and fall.
very nice sum up... gonna miss those shows
@TheNatkidd
Bit whoop. When I made this, it's beyond me why I forgot to add spongebob in, however, I am dissappointed in the idea that nickelodeon feels it necessary to mass all their strength behind it. Great. Spongebob is the ONLY nicktoon remaining from the 90's. But notice that people want to watch all the other shows. That signifies that Nickelodeon chose to make the decision on their own behalf to ONLY continue spongebob. They abandoned the old cartoons.
@lilpopful1
Actually, as it turns out, this show was turned over to the Nicktoons channel. They aired 13 episodes. The show was cancelled, however, two of the shows within were turned into series, those shows being Adventure Time (On Cartoon Network) and Fanboy and Chum Chum (On Nickelodeon).
@kirbyfan4 YES, very much so... it was a huge part of my childhood. I saw it everywhere! On TV, at Universal Studios, on the back of video tape cases (orange tapes, remember those?), even on billboards... it's embedded in my childhood as much as my old red schwinn bike (traded in 4 a fixie), drinking capri-sun pouches ( i always had trouble putting the straw in the little hole), and pizza fridays in elementary school (even though the pizza SUCKED)... *sighs* memories... hope it comes back...
oh yeah cartoons is the history of fairly odd parents and it started as oh yeah cartoons as season 0
I visited Australia last summer and i gotta admit, I was just shocked! They STILL have Aaahh!! Real Monsters, Catdog, Clarissa Explains It All, Doug, Hey Arnold(my favorite), Zim, Kenan&Kel, Ren and Stimpy, The Wild Thornberries and more! Those guys down under are truly lucky, but if most of the world gets the good shows, why the hell can't we have those shows here?
Nickelodeon sitcoms from the mid-late 2000's weren't that bad
E Agreed!
thank you pinwheels for making my childhood epic!
Drake & Josh is and always will be the BEST live action show that nick has ever made.
On TeenNick there's a block called 90's are All That that used to air on NickToons. It have's all the old Nick shows on the block it is at 12:00 midnight and everybody likes it
R.I.P. Nickelodeon
December 1, 1977- November 7, 2009
A once legendary, badass T.V. channel of epic proportions; died during the premiere of Fanboy and Chum Chum
"Will be sorely and fondly missed"
the "Mr. Meaty" was originally a short that played small episodes about in 2005-2006
lol, i like Catscratch, Back at the Barnyard, and Penguins of Madagascar alot too, so lol
i miss the old 90's nickelodeon. i can tell u miss them too.
Some guy who came to my school a couple of months ago was on Are You Afraid Of The Dark?! Also I think they need to bring back The Amanda Show, too. I used to love that show!
I miss all the old shows
6:33 wth is Diggs Tailwagger
th-cam.com/video/09ZtAaW3UFk/w-d-xo.html
5:45 the fairlyoddparents is still running,
Not only is Doug one of my all-time favorite cartoons, but it essentially is what Nickelodeon was from the very beginning?
Holy sa-mokes!
1:53
Where the hell did you get that image from?
@ruddicker
No need. Special Delivery only broadcast imported shows, which were covered in the first 30 seconds of the video.
it used to also be on life support with jimmy nutron, fairly odd parents, neds declassified but they got canceled too
3:29 my fav shows, All that, kenan & kel, and the amanda show
they shown re-runs of kenan and kel and the amanda show lately in the uk but, THEY TOOK IT OFF!!
Check out the first 3 seasons of "The Amanda Show" on Zune for XBOX360 (newer systems only). Also, if you don't have the new XBOX360 operating system then browse TH-cam for any classic episodes of "The Amanda Show" that you can stil find hanging around this website. If you can't find any full episodes of, "The Amanda Show" here on TH-cam check out your local DVD Video videostore. If you can find any of the first 3 seasons @ Hollywood Video buy them if you've got enough money, and enjoy them.
born 95 still remeber each one of these shows Nick fucked up doing what they did
You came into the world the year the corporate slimeballs known as Viacom International outbid MCA/Universal to purchase Nick a year after it divorced MTV Networks.
Thank you so much for making this video, it was very informative, and I like so many others miss the old nickelodean! I miss shows like the Secret world of Alex Mack, The Journey of Allen Strange, Hey dude, Salute your Shorts, My brother and me, All that, Keenan and Kel, Are you afraid of the dark Doug, Rugrats Catdog Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnold, Roundhouse, Eureka's Castle, You can't do that on Televison, What would you do, Double dare and Wild and Crazy kids and I could keep going I miss nick
wanna bring back 90s nick? 90s are all that. watch it. even a new channel is coming (called "the splat") that only broadcasts 90s nick shows. heck, even a new movie is being made called "nicktoons"!
@MrShagnasty23 are you talkin about (Are You Affraid Of The Dark)? And there is Salute you shorts.
I miss the old nickelodeon shows in the 90's... who's with me?
RIP NICK SPLAT 1999-2011
i mean 2003-2009 only six years why nick why you kill slime splat completly
*1985-2009
+The HanBaniverse *1984-2009
*2009
oof 1984-2009
Quick Trivia Question:
Around 3:08 is shown an classic nick teen sketch comedy show that premier before AllThat! What is the name of that Show?
Good video. I am doing a speech on the History of Nickelodeon for my communications class. Do you have any good sources for it?
@thekrisskat1
I think it happpened around 2006-07 because some later shows like Avatar, Drake and Josh, and Ned's Declassified School Surivial guide were good.
Nickelodian started in the capitol of my state.. OMFG! I could cry...
I absolutley miss the old nickelodeon
I do. If you mean "Nick Jr AM, "Nickelodeon Afternoon", "TEENick, & "Nick@Nite" then "yes" I remember all of those programming blocks which were actually used on the Nickelodeon West Coast & East Coast cable & satellite television networks.
There wasn't so many cartoons on Nickelodeon not until the early 1990's. There was Danger Mouse and some others on Nickelodeon back in the early 1980's, but not until Nicktoons debuted on Sunday, August 11, 1991 at around 10 am in the morning with the first Nicktoons Doug, Ren and Stimpy show and then Rugrats. Right now in the 21st century there aren't as many cartoons on Nickelodeon as there was back in the 90's.
Alot of the stations started out great. On MTV you had videos, Sci-Fi -Lost In Space, TVLand -Adam-12,Dragnet. Cartoon Network had old Flintstone's episodes. Then they start getting stupid about 5 years or so.. Besides most of the shows even on Disney where there are teenagers. The parents are out of the picture or they are "buddies" with their kids instead of being parents.
acually heres the new nick history nick was warm hearted then made it for entertainment 1994 nick was great people loved it , 2005 nick was runing out of ideas but managed to be still funny then later as we know it 2011 the nick founder became greedy and released shows and didnt even care about the plot then didnt even add punchlines then while a writer smoked and took drugs he wrote sunjay and craig the brain rotting show we know now
I thought the first show shot under the new name "Nickelodeon" was one of the Double Dare titles...not Doug. Or was that the first shot at the studios in Orlando?
Does Anyone Remember Sister Sister?
@kirbyfan4
Yes, I do.
(I read somewhere online, that Nickelodeon changed their logo in 2009 in celebration of their 50th anniversary)
@Emma70v3 That was actually the scariest episode. It felt like a real horror movie. Zim is at school taking human body parts to look human. But he still looks obese
@sanantono Are you talking about DragonTales? Because I always thought they were dinosaurs, too
I want the old shows back :(
@StimpyTheIdiot
I'm with you, I guess we should have a little hope in Nick. If they could make all those legendary shows, they could undo all this crap they've been doing to themselves lately. Maybe they're relaunching more shows after this Zim marathon, and maybe even a whole classics channel! But who knows, maybe I'm over-estimating the intelligence the new management that Nick has.
Hey, where did you get all this info on Pinwheel and everything? I've scoured the web and found nothing. Except your video, of course.
Wikipedia
@emilythefoxsparks12
INVADER ZIM is now on "nicktoons" weekday evenings from 5PM until 6PM EST.
Hey guys, did you manage to tune in to see Rocko's Modern Life on the Nicktoons channel last Wednesday? It was late in the evening, and as usual, I didn't want to see 30 reruns of George Lopez on Nick, so I watched this. I don't think they'll show it again, though.
@lilpopful1
I can only assume they cancelled it. I made this video years ago, and haven't bothered keeping up with Nickelodeon since.
R.I.P. old Nickelodeon
Jokes aside: It is interesting venturing back to before 2010 when Nickelodeon was in its rut and a time when shows like Icarly and Drake & Josh were criticised. Also The Penguins of Madagascar just being called Penguins and Amy Poehler beforw Parks & Rec and Inside Out.
It's just facinating to see how attitudes have changed. 😊
what do you think about The Wild Thornberrys
Is there a reason why you forgot to mention the weekend show Special Delivery?
when did random cartoons come out cuz its not here today
Reason being is that the creator wanted to end spongebob after the movie, but instead he gave the project to another person, and thats why its not the same
good job i really want these shows to come back...
but another thing i noticed u crossed out fairly odd parents and i belive they are showing a new movie called fairly odd baby
just thought id point that out =)
@KarlyKom. |
"The Annoying Orange" are currently broadcasted on "CARTOON NETWORK."
I like it when the channel changed its logo in 2009.
almost all of the shows you scratched out are still being shown on the nick station called nicktoons network
Avatar: The Last Airbender was one of the greatest shows ever to be featured on Nick during its later years.
@rikuvssasuke
Did you read about "Disney JUNIOR" on (Wikipedia)?
@hypnoticart
hey man i need someone to confirm something like a month back i saw a commercial on nickalodian that said back by popular deman old nickalodian was supposed to show on nick at night i dunnif it was supposed to be only every monday or what but ive only seen that commercial once and ive been looking out for it even induring the shitty shows like i carly to see if they really ment they were going to bring back the old cartoons but i have yet to see them on nick@night or the commercial
They should dedicate a whole 2 weeks to all old new shows...just play reruns for at least an entire week or 2...like A CLASSIC NICKTOONS MARATHON.
Only 2 or 3 shows on the list at 5:43 are still there. all the other ones are gone.
Hey I'd been interested in learning the history of Nicka t Nite (though I do know a lot about its history).
I remember this video!
Also RIP orange splat
so tru... Thanks for this in-depth report
shout out to all the 86 kids out there do you miss our childhood shows?
Nickelodeon went down hill so much with their newer shows and getting rid of their studios in Orlando. Late '80's-90's Nick was the best thing ever. I would sometimes even play sick so I could stay at home and watch Nick. haha. It was really that good.
@purplefurby2 I know. Butch Hartman is like the only creative person left at Nick. His ideas are all original plus he sticks to his show unlike Stephen Hillenberg (sponebob).
also, i found it funny as random cartoons made a show called "adventure time" for cartoon network, rather than nick itself
I'm seriously pissed that Invader Zim is gone. Along with Rugrats,Hey Arnold, and CatDog.
bring back the 90's Doug, Rugrats, Rocket Power, Hey Arnold, and shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark, All That, and KEENAN AND KEL
thank you, i always wondered what went wrong with them!
