Abandoned - Nickelodeon Studios Florida

  • In 1990, in conjunction with the opening of Universal Studios Orlando, Nickelodeon Studios had officially opened to the public. But it's purpose as the new headquarters for the Nickelodeon network, where all future shows like Double Dare, Kenan & Kel, Slime Time live and so many more would be filmed, was quickly becoming unprofitable. Despite it being a popular attraction within the theme park, the studios closed and were left completely abandoned. Join me today as I take a look at what happened to this deeply beloved studio/attraction, and what ultimately happened to it's iconic facade.

Hollywood never likes to drift too far from the core. They struggle with studios in far away overseas lands unless they can use very cheap labour to make their stuff. Being in Florida would be akin to being in another far away country and you couldn't sap the cheap labor that they love to use.

    • @MrCobalt
      @MrCobalt 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

Far be it from me to care about some corporation, but did you even watch this video? It actually cost them less in terms of labor to have a studio in Florida, but none of the actors wanted to live in Florida, the weather created issues with sound stages (rain on the metal roofs), the constant flood of tourists walking through was more of a distraction for those trying to create shows (universal was having similar issues) and in many cases they had to pretend to be filming shows just to hold up their end of the contract. Because of compounding issues like this, they were running the place at a loss, where as in California, they'd have to spend more on labor, but wouldn't be buried under other unforeseen problems that filming in Florida as part of a theme park resulted in. That's what led to them leaving. Simple business decision to have to bail on the venture in Florida.

@@MrCobalt I get that but if you are repurposing the building to a production house (which is in the same realm as the buildings prior function), it is a unique/distinct feature of the building that adds to the charm current function. Thank you so much for this video! I was born in 1990 and my family went here when i was around 10 or 11 maybe (im unsure) We got in line here to see a show and a voice came over the intercom and asked if kids wanted to audition. I auditioned and got to be on slime time live. It was raining that day so it was all inside. I remember walking in and seeing Legends of the Hidden Temple folded up on the wall like an accordion. I remember thinking how small the set was even as a kid. We played the Slime Time Live game in a commercial break during a spongebob episode. The caller won the game and I was slimed. They gave us a towel to clean our hair but not a shower or anything. I walked out under those orange pillars and spent the rest of the day at the park. This video gave me major nostalgia and i admit i teared up a little just thinking about how much fun i had. Thank you for this video!

I was born in 2000 but i didn't grow up watching much nickelodeon at all. It's only in the past couple years that I've started to go through a lot of the Nickelodeon media from the 90s and 2000s. I will say I'm impressed with most of the stuff from these decades and understand why the channel and so many of the shows are considered culturally iconic. I love their use of bright, colorful aesthetics and continued embrace of the 80s-90s maximalist stylings long after most other channels have become bland and lifeless. Even today, they seem to have maintained a distinctive channel identity better than pretty much any other channel, and I'm impressed with how much positive messaging they put into interstitial spaces.

I think it's a shame they closed the Nickelodeon studios in Florida. I grew up watching the shows that were filmed there and I always felt like the fact that they were filmed there instead of California gave those shows a different feel and made them better. They had all those people in their audience that were on vacation from different places and they would interview them and have them participate in some of the shows and it gave them a fun, casual, relaxed vacation kind of vibe that came through even to someone watching at home. It seemed more accessible to regular people and didn't have that manufactured fake feel of Hollywood produced TV. I think it's good for there to be more national TV produced outside of California and New York City and it's a shame there's not more of it.

I saw the original version when it came out a decade ago, and I've been on and off watching your videos ever since. I've been waiting for a new version of this for a LONG time and now it's here. This puts a smile on my face... Here's hoping for another decade and the building to be turned into a Nick museum!
    Idea: Segaworld Sydney.

For long time back in 2016, i discovered this channel when Abandoned had only 17 episodes and the recent one at that time was "Journey Into Imagination". I think the first one i watched was on "Disney Skyway" and ever since i was watching all the time. I really enjoyed your way of delivering and building your content with that great research and simple yet effective style. Even as an person that isnt nostalgic to many of those places, i felt interested in them and i would enjoyed checking them out if i had been at those times. With other series like Bankrupt and Cancelled, this was the main if i wanted to learn something. Jake, you really made my day and i hope this will continue for many years. We are close yet far to the big 100 episode and i will be there to see it and support it.

I loved Nickelodeon studios, being a 90’s kid this hurts my heart. I feel an intense longing for the old Nickelodeon and the old studios. I was lucky enough to live in Florida in the 90’s and visited Orlando frequently. I hope one day they will alter their course.

I was 11 when I first saw your video in 2015. I went down a whole 90’s spiral lol. I marveled at how ancient, but recent the 90’s felt. I heard AdamTheWoo talk about Surge energy drinks in *his* video, which led me to wanting to buy some Surge lol. I ended up going with my family in 2018 to Universal, but unfortunately not getting a chance to even get a peak of the structure. I plan to visit it some day, and ponder at the 90’s Nickelodeon branding hidden underneath, the millions of people who passed by it, unknowing of its demise, the viewers of your original video *and* this one, and just imagine how that time was, a time which sadly I will never know.
I’m 19 now and still love your vids Jake. Thanks for providing quality. ❤

Back in 1992 my family took a trip to Universal Studios and we went to Nickelodeon Studios. It was really fun and interesting watching how things we filmed and slim was made. I was actually on a game show that never made it to air after it was filmed.
Maybe if Universal Studios would have put more effort into accommodating the staff and stars of Nickelodeon, maybe they wouldn't have left for California.

Really fond memories of my one trip there in the 90's. I remember we got to see the filming of Welcome Freshmen and it was really great to see all of the behind-the-scenes processes. I appreciate that these also serve as their own photo montage to places to remember the good parts of them. Great work!

I've stood in that que line from City Walk leading right up to the iconic stairs to get checked into the Orlando Informer Evening program at Universal multiple times now, and never realized its the old NIck studio. That's wild since that 90s facade is very memorable for a lot of people.

Thank you for this! Grew up in Central FL in the early 90s and it is still so odd to visit Universal without Nick Studios there. Dreamed of animating as a child bc of both Nick and MGM
Edit- okay, that actually hurts to see the studio left how it was. I imagine people there at the time didn’t want to change it or move anything, either. Entire industry left this area 😢

this was one of the first abandoned/urbex subjects i ever came across- when i was a kid i wrote a self insert fanfiction about being able to visit it with the invader zim cast before it closed, lol. your original video on it was also one of the earliest to get me into the defunct youtube rabbit hole. very sweet to see it all come full circle :) it's still one of my favorite topics- i really miss this era of animation production being so colorful and off-the-wall (and easier to get a job at too, haha)!

Yeah, the 80s and 90s were a golden age for a lot of things. It was in this odd transition period between the age of the internet and still being quite outdated. It just seems like most things since have just gotten worse.

Oh bro this is a huge nostalgia hit for me because I was on Slime Time Live in 2003 and have an oddly vivid memory of it. I went with my grandparents, my grandmother is no longer with us and she didn’t like roller coasters but Nick Studios was something we all went into together. I really treasure that memory and I had it reinforced by seeing the studio at the end of each show filmed there. Weird to feel nostalgic for a building
