I don’t think I recorded self park before, but Ill do just that for the next one and compare them to these

I'm not that disappointed. Angled parking is the easiest kind of parking, and, until self-driving is fully autonomous, not having auto angle parking is fine with me.
I think that the autopark looks for something big enough for your model x to get into and be able to open the door? Shes a big girl and british carparks dont have massive spaces for her.
^^^^^This. It'll have a predefined size it looks for. Range Rovers behave similarly - to the point where a car designed and built in Britain will basically never be able to auto-park. In Britain.
I think Tesla Auto park system relies on other cars on each side and the System thinks angled parked cars was just a bad parking on a normal parking since they were not symmetrical on each side unlike normal parked cars. Tesla maybe not added that angled parking to the system or maybe AI? Or.. nah.. all I said is wrong... maybe..? 🤔

it's boring. Autopark has been around on many cars for many years now. Always has sucked, always too slow. Takes literally 3 seconds to parallel park a car yourself.
Also, my 2014 Ford had better automatic parking than my 2018 Tesla does.
@@leimeisei909 It may have been around for years but you can't doubt that it has gotten brilliant. Your 2018 Tesla, assuming its a model 3, has 8 360 degree cameras and 12 USS's. While your ford most likely had 2 cameras with 180 degrees both ways, without the Neural network and AI we have now.
I haven't done it myself, cause I would rather not spend a years salary, but from what I've seen in AZ it works great...

Hi 👋 just stumbled across my first video of you this one . Just watching think I would give it a masive A+++ cos it’s great to see in-depth Thankyou very understated the self parking on a Tesla !!? I must of missed something on video when trying to find a parking spot do you have to press a button ? Or something for car to look for a parking space sorry in advance
It’s awesome. Got me into a very tight parallel parking space today. I started it on my own but had a bit of trouble. There was maybe 1’ of clearance between 2 large SUVs, with city traffic. Better than any other car I’ve used that has similar functionality.

The car PROVED it doesn't use the white lines on the first parking. The car parked at an angle based on the other persons cars off centre parking
Also, while (as others have said) Tesla has not yet released an "Angle parking" feature and the software in the car now is not designed to deal with angle parking, I believe that if you hadn't chickened out but instead let the car finish it's attempt to park in the angled lot, you might have found that it parked just fine (although again, the diagram on the screen would have suggested otherwise). You're correct that the parking feature does not go by the white lines on the ground, instead it sees the sides of the actual cars on either side of the space it's trying to park in and goes by that. So if the two cars on either side were properly parked in their angled spaces & parallel to each other, your car would have likely slipped right in between them at a perfect angle while all the while it thought it was parking perpendicularly. I can confirm that this is what happened when I auto parked in a row where the cars on either side were for whatever reason both parked at the same slightly cock-eyed angle & going over the lines in what was supposed to be a row of perpendicular spaces.
The problem with angled parking is that Tesla doesn't use the front cameras to find open spaces but rather only the side cameras, and from that side angle it simply cannot recognize open spaces in an angled row as it creeps past them. It was only by some weird fluke that your car happened to recognize the one that it did (although some may argue that it only seems to be by some weird fluke that Tesla Autopark ever recognizes *any* open spaces).
(Once caveat: You're trying to park that big boat of an X into those tiny English parking spaces, I'm parking a 3 into big 'MURRICAN sized spaces, so your Autopark probably has it a bit rougher than mine does.)

If you look at the side mirrors as the Tesla is parking, you can see that it is moving. The car must be using them for a better view! Brilliant!

Does it have to park in backwards? It just seem that it would be easier for the self park if it went in front first (except for some parallel parking).
for some advice on perpendicular parking, find a space you like and pull the car out like you did at 9:56 and itll 9/10 times offer to finish the park for you. i always do this to speed things up, but become lazy for the second half lol.

Great video, I wanted to do *exactly* such a video as Autopark just doesn't work most of the time. It doesn't detect most spaces available and very often the car is too far from the sidewalk. Also, rotating the steeringwheel while standing still is the biggest complaint. It the spot is super super tight then yes it should do that but the Tesla only picks spots that are huge.

When I solely use my back up camera to park (in my non auto-pilot car), I park at a slight angle every time. I gotta use my mirrors for the final bit to line it up straight

just a thought... do you not have to have the indicator signalling on the side that you intend to park? how else would it know your intentions and where to look for a suitable space?
Really interesting video but I am intrigued with that parking space in the very beginning of the angled area that it was a parking space but wasn’t. I want to know what it would’ve tried to do.
The friction on the wheel turning because of the underplate might also have effect on why it doesnt turn fully.

In you description you should put the Year and Model Tesla you are using (also the Software version) since results can vary depending on the version of AP and software!

Interesting that it could not park in the golf club car park as this type of angled parking is so common in the US. Does not bode well for advanced summons based on this but I reckon this issue must have been addressed in later software updates.
I remember in India where the steering wheel is on the right side like yours.
You said that the first parking attempt was at an angle, but was it angled relative to the lines or the neighboring cars?

I read somewhere that the auto parking looks and only works with spaces where there's cars to your left and right and something like a wall or another car behind you. Otherwise it doesn't think it's a space. It is odd because the auto parking using the lines you would think would fix all that and improve functionality too. Not sure if you knew this or not, just stating what I read.
This was quite interesting. I have self park on my Seat Ateca. It wouldn't have hit that "tree" (it was a branch 😂) the rear autobrake would have stopped the car before it made contact.
Also, the Ateca will drive itself out of a parking space automatically as well.
It wouldn't, however, have picked up the space in front of the BMW. It needs to be able to measure a gap between two cars to be able to choose a space.
Samuel Bomorse When I was looking at the Ateca the sales guy tried to demonstrate self park and it parked in the middle of the two rows of cars so not in a space at all 🤦🏼♀️

As to the "angle" the diagram showed you parked at on your first attempt: very often when I autopark after the car declares itself "Parked" the diagram shows the car at a downright sloppy angle in the space but when I go out & check this is not actually the case, the car is perfectly straight in parallel to the vehicles on either side. I think if you had actually gone outside & checked you may have found this to be the case as well.

It doesnt angle park cuz i think the auto park only uses the side cameras and the pillar cameras to find a spot. If they used the front camera to also detect parking spots, that would be nice. During the autoparking itself it also only uses pillar, side cameras and ultrasonic sensors at the front and at the back
watching this made me want to never drive a car in my life until they are fully automatic
They should really add more cpu power or cloud power to the processing for the ai scanning for parking or self driving!
Auto park uses the ultrasonics, so no way to use the lines to park. It’s also why you need to drive past spaces close to the cars adjacent to the spot so it can measure the distance between the cars. So no way to park in an angled spot. Autoparking is completely useless in perpendicular situations, IMO, for both my Tesla and my Volt (and every other car that has parking assist I’ve been in) because of how far past the space you need to go past. In a busy lot, the guy behind you isn’t going to wait and will just snatch the spot. Parallel parking is useful for both cars, but a little slower than I do it myself.
Ok this was good but the manual literally says “Autopark does not operate on angled parking spaces” and that autopark is cancelled when “The parking sequence exceeds seven moves.” Pages 96-97. You make it sound like it’s a big mystery.
What about using "Summon" to get you out of a tight parking space?
9:30 you are going to quickly. The sensors especially if they are scanning a bit farther away then normal need you to take it slow. I have a Ford F-150 that has auto park features and it won’t scan if I’m going anything above 4mph. It will but it misses the spaces a lot if I do.
It Could be that the Tesla has written rules and timings for even auto parking to stop it when it either takes too long doing a parking or the angles of the parking space are different in it than seen as you drive up to it? Which is a good thing since it could hit a inside bay angle when parking or takes too long and stops for safety sakes! The parking must be based on the space size and ease of entry compared to the Tesla car your in? Nice to see a UK Tesla channel which looks at these features. You should try the motorway off slip lane changing it meant to do now in the newest update. Thanks.

Can you try use auto park to get in a small space, then is it possible to use summon and let the car get itself out of that same spot?? I love the real world tests that you do, it makes the tesla look like a MAGIC car compared to boring ICE cars we're used to.
Maybe a dumb question, but can it actually help you find legal parking? That is, does it know what's a parking lot and what are legal parallel parking spaces and residential/time restrictions they may have as well as fire hydrants, driveways, etc.

I suspect it's trying to read the open gaps perpendicular to the sides of the car as it passes them. With cars parked at an angle and looking only straight to the sides, it can't see the gaps.
