i remember during my times of service
i was deployed in North-South Korean border, just under the MDL as a DMZ guard duty
all soldiers were given KAN/PVS-7 and PVS-04K to utilize during night time, and our posts had this IR floodlight to paint and illuminate the target
and since DPRK soldiers didnt have any NVG, me and my squadmates would play this super bright military-grade laser show that only we could witness :)

Sovereign Citizens can't buy it. CAC=/= access to GPNVG-18, AN-PSQ-10, or Steiner E-Optic LPNVGs. All of which cannot be exported (ITAR). In order to order these types of Night Vision you usually have to get a letter from someone way up higher in the chain of command that would approve the purchase and sale of such products. The government approves the sale for the company saying that they have verified and vetted that individual will not sell the technology to a foreign nation, illegal immigrants, terrorists. Its illegal (completely unenforceable) to allow a person who is not an American citizen to look through Gen 3 or Gen 3+ night vision. So even though the GPNVG is made by Eotech the government has a say in who can buy it due to the work being put out by contract like the Army NGSAW program.

Funnily enough, while most modern day games call them the "night vision goggles" , the original Doom games used to call them the "light-amplification visors" which I find to be really interesting, considering that is what the goggles actually are.
The technical jargon you hear most people call them by is NODS or "Night Optical Device" because the term goggles implies a dual pair of lenses.

IR light is just above violet in the light spectrum so it's actually a light desaturated violet that's why it looks pinkish it's just basically compressing it down to the visual spectrum

I like to remind everyone that the monocular he showcases is like from 1995, it is probably the best budget nods you can get without gimping yourself, they are super grainy but there are newer ones you can buy that are also white phosphorus and also super crystal clear, but they cost about 7-10k. The upside? super comforting to wear for long hours and has the best eye relief possible.

US Marine here. We have 31B's and they are binocular, use white phosphorus and they are truly day and night compared to the 14s. There is also an attatchable thermal camera that makes operating 100x better.

I use gen2+ PN14K’s and they’re pretty decent for almost anything. You can adjust the focus on each eye which is great for people who wear glasses. Only downside is the tunnel vision you get. I’ve found walking over rough terrain with them on is difficult and I find myself flipping them up and down as I go. Paired with an iR laser pointer though and you find you don’t have to ADS at all
8:18 I just want to add something. Night vision devices utilizing infrared illumination typically use frequencies of infrared light that is very close to the visible spectrum of light. On the other hand, the emissions produced by heat, belong to a frequency of infrared light that is very far apart from the visible spectrum. Hence the reason why those toy "NVGs" using infrared illumination aren't instant thermal imagers.
Night Vision goggles in Wildlands was so amazing and perfect.
Gen one and two NVGs actually make this sound when you initially start them. The sound is just much more quiet.

I bought a Armasight Sirius years ago, and I was later given an Ops Core BASE (non armored) and a helmet mount as a gift one year, otherwise? I don't regret buying it at all. Gen2+ tech over 45lp/mm is very capable on all but the darkest nights, good Gen2+ is probably 75% of the performance of Gen3 and is light years better than Gen1. Even with Gen3 you may have to use an IR torch occasionally. so don't feel the unit is crap if you need to use an IR torch to supplement it's capabilities, just make sure to exert good IR discipline, because CCTVs, digital cameras and other people with night vision are really sensitive to it. Don't wanna freak the neighbors out and get the cops called (I've had that happen...lol). If you look around on eBay? You can find some used, but perfectly serviceable Gen2 units with few hours on the tube for under a thousand bucks, even older Gen3 can be found under that price, but that's less common. Just do your research, and make sure that you're not buying a pair of "hot" goggles that "fell off a truck" from some military base, especially in the case of typical military issued units (PVS-5s, PVS-7s, PVS-14s)
because the feds WILL come looking for them, and the person who sold them to you and you will not get your money back. But, if you want something that is a fairly safe bet? Opticsplanet has a Gen2+ monocular from Bering Optics called the GT-14 that comes with a helmet mount, skull crusher, sacrificial lens, weapon mount and rubber eyepiece for under $1500. Hope this helps :)

I'm also NVG freak, love everything about NVG.
The guns in MW being canted to the side isn't just because the focus is more severely blurred between close and far, but also because if you're wearing night vision you'll knock the friggin things off your face because they stick waaaaaaaaay out. You can't keep the buttstock in the shoulder and also look through the sight. I came to terms with this and embraced the IR laser mounted on the handguard. If you tried to ADS with a reflex sight, you might be able to look through it but good luck when the charging handle flies into your nods and breaks it along with your face.

9:38 Speaking of light intensifiers. That isn't the only way to passively detect light during night time. Apparently digital night vision basically collect light, pass it through a CCD, or CMOS sensor. Which converts it into electrons. And these electrons get interpreted into an image, and passed on to a digital screen. The benefits of this systems is that you can have:
-High resistance to bright lights. You can use it during daytime. If you tried doing the same thing with light intensified NVGs, you would probably damage your eyes, and probably also the equipment as well *(which sort of explains why you were wondering why NVGs were still working in bright environments during your COD:MW playthrough. I think it was one of those night time missions.......although I don't really remember the quad-NODs being digital thou :/ )*
Anyways, the lack of light intensifiers in digital night vision explain why they are resilient against very bright lights.
-You can potentially have colour night vision. Which makes identifying important targets much easier, and faster.
-You can super-impose thermal imaging over your regular night vision
-You can zoom in, or out
-You can put in more information on your digital screen. Kind of like a HUD set-up

I tried the 2009 night vision goggles, they were awesome. we went into my garage in pitch blackness and could see perfectly. I don't know why they show it in green in the games; we saw perfectly in regular color as if the lights were on. there was a green mode and a color mode, and they were both perfectly clear. the garage is 20x20'.

9:38 Dude. Night vision can be so weird sometimes. Most NODs have light travelling linearly through the image intensifier, straight thru your eyes. But, oh ho......some night vision googles like the AN/PVS-21 have light travel through a really complicated, non-linear path before it goes into your eyes. Like, it does it by using mirrors to bounce images around. Kinda like a submarine periscope. Or, a better comparison would be those freaky goggles you see at the eye-doctor's place when you need to check your eyes.
Anyways, the whole point of this weird method of directing light into your eyes is to make NVGs very compact. Like they barely protrude off your face. Like only 1-2 inches away from your face. As far as I know, I think only the PVS-21 does this. But, I also think that the LUCIE night vision goggles do the same thing..........I think.
The more recent 7s do the same thing with mirrors. Sometimes when they come in for repair, they only need new mirrors because they're the most fragile piece in the entire device.

the most probable reason they can’t develop the goggles to near replication is because they’d basically be selling military grade equipment to civilians. the fact that the real night vision goggles costs so much and can’t be sold without a law enforcement background is because civilians will be free to use this equipment for any purpose they want, be it good or bad. so even if the technology develops even further, activision will never be allowed to sell goggles that are even near military-grade.

The military prefers this because it makes your eyes adjust from bright to dark light faster when you take off the NVGs.

It was a hard concept to wrap my brain around until I got my DTNVG'S and then I tried with only one tube articulated down and it was pretty intuitive. But I still prefer my second tube down with it most of the time.

Actually some goggles do make a faint high pitch "EEEEEeeeeee" when powered on but not like noise in the new MW game. It all depends on the light amplification tubes used in the NVG. I have a set of Anvis 6s that do that if they havent been powered on in several days/weeks only for a brief moment. Also makes a low audible but continuous high pitch noise when ambient light is very low. I have 4 sets so far
I think its older tube tech that uses an active cooling system. Feel like I read that somewhere. I have a set of pvs15s which have the mx10160 tubes that should be the same tubes as whats in your anvis 6/9 sets and they dont make any noise. Maybe its to do with the power supply?
@@thepewplace1370 I have a mx10160A and C's in the 6s also have m11769 series in a mod3. It is usually power supply in 10160s that make the sound. More so in the older gen like 10160A, think early OIF days tech. You can also hear it on certain mx11769 tube in pvs14s if you are around dark enough environment.
@@MrTimjames343 Makes sense. I'm not sure what tubes our 14s have, they're unfilmed WP (I'd assume that'd make them L3) and they're silent too, even in utter blackout, but they are damn near brand new.
