Jupe was suffering from PTSD, and if you look at the alien costumes his kids were wearing it goes back to the monkey incident. When they are panning on the Jupe set you see the cameras lined up. The sides look like the eyes on the costume. Jupe never learned from this tragic event, so he thought he could work with this animal, and learned the hard way. The shoe was the spectacle. The entire movie showed you not to directly look in the eyes of an animal. When the chimp came out of the kitchen Jupe was looking at the shoe, and also looking through the table cloth. He was crouched in a submissive posture and was non threatening, which allowed the chimp to come back to its senses. Sorry for the long winded comment. One last thing, I think the alien changes shapes to try to get you to look at it so it could eat you.

The entire chimp rampage scene may or may not be based on a real-life event involving a chimpanzee named Travis who was raised around humans since birth. Like Gordy, Travis was an animal actor who appeared in commercials and a few TV shows.
Despite Travis’s socialization around humans, he ended up brutally mauling a woman, and was shot and killed by a police officer. The woman attacked by Travis needed 7 hours of surgery to fix her face and hands, but she was left permanently blind.

@@st1nkydan My tips for someone starting would be:
Get an idea that you're comfortable and stick with it, something you can focus on and just go with it.
Write what you know, if you're lacking inspiration use the people and things in your life, past and present, as a basis for your initial ideas, a familiar basis will do more for you than any idea.
If you're coming up short with information, don't be afraid to research, whether it is poring over books of information, watching or reading something to see how they did it, learn from others.
Don't be afraid, or rather, don't let fear control you. A lot of new writers start off scared, scared of not being original, scared of making mistakes, and scared of being bad. These are normal fears, but these are also things a writer will experience, you will make mistakes, you will probably have a dud or two, and you will probably have similarities to other work.
This is all normal, but you learn by doing, it's like walking, you trip the first few times, but eventually you will be able to sprint.
And finally, have fun. If your writing is draining and you're miserable doing it, it's probably not for you. There is no shame in that, it's not for everyone. And this goes for your ideas, if you have a fun silly idea, run with it, own it, if it is what you enjoy writing, then do it.

The evolution of Jean Jacket at the end does a couple of things… For one, it’s a “dance” of sorts to get its prey to be fixated on it. It’s prey can’t help but be drawn in and look directly at it’s weird shape. Also, it’s “eye” resembles a hybrid of film and digital camera sensor. It’s flashing “whips” almost make me feel like it’s capturing images of what it’s looking at. Fantastic creature concept that further illustrates the themes of the movie.

The digestion scene was by far the CREEPIEST shit I've seen in a while. Especially the screams echoing in the sky during the night. Those people were stuck in Jean Jacket for HOURS, slowly being digested and crushed. And you can hear a child call for their "mommy" during the initial swallowing scene where it zooms on all the people being sucked up the esophagus. So unnerving and something I won't forget anytime soon.
Also, right at the beginning of the movie, the radio mentioned how some hikers went missing before. That is who you actually hear screaming right at the beginning and whose stuff was being shot from the sky, initially killing the dad. First time watching it, I was like "Why does it sound like people screaming in the sky?" during that first scene. Whelp, didn't take long for me to figure out I wasn't imagining shit.
Balloons are super bad around animals, whether it's startling chimps or killing giant sea-like aliens when they eat it. Good job seeing the UFO on the jacket, I noticed that first time too. A lot of reactors miss that! Even the logo behind the bleachers resemble the horses being sucked up by a "UFO"
And NOPE stands for Not Of Planet Earth.

So the big motif with this movie is "spectacle"/the things we do for entertainment, and the numerous bad ways that chasing down spectacle can end in disaster. The people who brought in a wild animal on a TV stage inevitably got people killed. The main cast are chasing down this giant monster that could easily get them killed. Jupe tries to give an audience a spectacle with Jean Jacket and gets 40 people killed. So there's a deep purposefulness to the fact that the way to survive an encounter with Jean Jacket is to NOT look at it.

So apart from using known creatures like octopus and squid as inspiration for how the alien looked, the crew also took inspiration, with the help of biologists and cosmologists consulting on the movie - from what scientists imagine possible life may look like on Jupiter. Jupiter of course, is a gas giant with no actual surface, so any life that would hypothetically exist there would always be floating through the clouds, held there by heavy upwind. This explains the very parachute like features of the alien.

One thing I love is Jordan peele pulled a note from jaws, though rather than never showing you the monster, he never showed you a death. He let you hear it, he let you see it before, but he didn't show you the death or the viscera beyond some blood. And yet, I didn't notice that watching because it was still so horrifying and beautifully done.

This was such a great commentary on exploitation and erasure, not just with people with animals. (The Haywoods never got their deserved big break). People on this earth can barely handle animals from here, there's 0 guarantee that we'd be able to handle something that wasn't. The chimp they used for Gordy's Home was never the same so they never established a real relationship and that incident that went so viral happened and Jupe never learned a lesson from those mistakes, and continued it with "Jean Jacket" until it was too late. Em and OJ know how to work with animals way better. (It even made itself bigger to grab more attention) And they made sure to get the "money shot" regardless.

@@indigozulu9 Exactly. "I will cast abominable filth at you. Make you vile. And make you a spectacle." Looking up at Jean Jacket proved to be the demise of those who only sought the thrill of a show. The exploitation of actors, male and female, who suffered horribly for decades in Hollywood. The exploitation of animals. The exploitation of people of colour - black, asian, native americans - and then their erasure. The exploitation of people's suffering - the famous photograph of the starving Sudanese boy, by Kevin Carter, and the couple who lost their infant baby at sea, by Jack Gaunt. All a spectacle, even if sometimes macabre, but always something we as audience often find ourselves seeking for more. There are a lot of themes about this film. I think it's Peele's strongest yet, and my favourite film from him!

what's interesting to me is that this definitely lays the foundation for Em and OJ to make their own park like Jupe did - they could probably even use his property directly, since it was so fundamental to them killing JJ.
But as for _if_ they actually would try to turn a profit from their JJ-induced trauma in the same way that Jupe did with Gordy, that's another matter. I'd think they'd at least have a bit more sense. Would they sell the footage, picture, and overall story, if possible? Yes. Would they make Jupe's whole park into a JJ-themed one? Nope.

    1) showing Gordi assault etc was about exploitation to make a spectacle, the chip didn't attack Jupe because he didn't look the chimp in the eyes, setting up a connection to Jean Jacket the Alien Creature
    2) the shoe standing up is a "bad miracle" representing the phrase "waiting for the other shoe to drop", which didn't happened until Jupe, believing he was "blessed" was sucked up and eaten by Jean Jacket, which Jupe had fed some of the horses (he bought from the main character) Jupe had fed those horses to the Alien creature thinking he had a special "connection" with, he was wrong
    3) the alien creature Jean Jacket swallowed the large Jupe ballon which it choked on and hurt it might of even killed it

A lot of the subtext is about how Hollywood uses animals (and child actors) for spectacle and discards them.
The TMZ guy showing up just happens to have a helmet that is a mirror- showing only the reflection of those around him, but not the person underneath.
Then there's Angel looking for something to fill the void he's got since his girlfriend dumped him and the dying cinematographer looking for that last validation on his life.
So many interesting characters to focus on and distract from the big questions of WTF IS the creature and where did it come from.
They made the cast so interesting that the creature is almost in the background.

This is easily my favorite Peele joint. Every time I watch it, I get more out of it.
The Gordy storyline sets up how Jupe didn't learn an important lesson. As a child, he witnessed first hand what happens when you try to turn a wild animal into cheap entertainment. As an adult, he makes the same mistake with Jean Jacket. The shoe standing on end is an indication of how trauma distorts memory. (Also, note how the alien masks that his kids wear resemble the three studio cameras when seen in profile.)
My favorite detail is how Antlers is seen reviewing stock footage of predators and prey in his editing bay. As Steven recognized, Antler's idea of the impossible shot is "what an animal sees when it is being eaten."

I had to watch this movie twice (at minimum, so far). The JP concept of spectacle & how to (try) to survive a predator attack is amazing.
Also, the "missing hikers" heard on the radio at the beginning was probably its first meal & it stayed because Jupe kept feeding it. Jupe whispers "you're chosen" to himself showing how misguided he was in making a show out of feeding a predator (and after 6 months still not understanding it was a creature, not an alien ship).

So, the design of Jean jacket was based around different things.
    1) biblically accurate Angels. the angels in the bible weren't pretty boys with wings, but massive lovecraftian kaiju with horrific shapes, some being depicted covered in eyes (so could see you looking from any direction. also the Angels in the anime Evangelion were based on that too and was part of the inspiration here as well.
    2) weather balloons. esp as they are unfurling. which are the default explanation skeptics give to hand wave away all UFO sightings.
    and
    3) there is a theoretical space ship design called a Solar Sailing Ship. its a ship that uses huge, but incredibly light and delicate sails that can propel the ship thru space on the solar winds. infact, there is an episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9 where the main character Ben Sisko and son fly such a ship, called a Bajoran Light Ship, whose design is very reminiscent of JJ's design here.
