Jupe survived Gordy’s attack because he wasn’t looking directly into Gordy’s eyes. A lot of species (including humans), consider direct eye contact to be a form of intimidation. The tablecloth was simply obscuring Jupe’s face and Gordy didn’t feel threatened. Because of this experience, Jupe felt like he was “special” because in his mind he thought that he had the ability to “tame” wild animals.

Fun fact that a lot of people missed: the reason Emerald took multiple pictures before “the perfect shot” was because if you flip those pictures fast, it will play like an animation or video. That is how filmmaking works, which ties into the start where Em mentioned the first ever motion picture was created by a photographer, who took a bunch of fast pictures and put them together to create film!
That’s also why when someone says “24 frames a second” it means 24 pictures per second

You asked about how Gordy tied to the alien. IMO it was showing how you can't really tame a wild animal. You have to respect the animals you are using on a set. They should have realized the balloons weren't a good idea. They didn't respect OJ and Lucky then Lucky bucked. Ricky/Jupe didn't learn from what happened on set. He was literally feeding a wild animal and in the end it turned on him. The alien costumes he made looked like the old fashioned camera from the set of his show. The reason Gordy didn't attack Jupe is bec he never 100percent looked it in the eyes. He was staring at the shoe at first. Then looking at Gordy through the table cloth. And, he was in a submissive posture. Sorry for the long comments. Love you guys!

    • @morrislary4576
      @morrislary4576 ปีที่แล้ว +82

Jupe mistakenly believed he had some special connection with Gordy that let him tame the wild creature, when in truth it was just that, as you said, he stared at the shoe instead of making eye contact and was submissive. He kept that wrong lesson to believe he could have a special relationship with Jean Jacket, which obviously wasn't the case.

The Gordy scenes also point out peoples’ fascination with miracles and the unknown, including the audience’s fascination. There is no meaning behind the shoe standing up straight, it just happened to and consider it some sort of miracle, a bad miracle, like a coin mysteriously killing a man. In the Gordy scenes we never actually see the full damage of Gordy’s attacks, it’s left unseen, which makes us even more curious about something we know we probably shouldn’t see. The Gordy scenes prime us for the concepts of this movie by giving us an example of how miracles and the unknown can be distracting, bad, and potentially dangerous. The alien is such a good threat due to people’s fascination with miracles and the unknown, they can’t help but stare in awe or terror, and they can’t simply let things go, they have to tame it, or get the perfect shot.

Something I missed on first watch was the territoriality. The alien had taken up residence in the Hayward/Jupe area and had been hunting. It believed this was its area and would defend it. We see the flashback to the dad talking about Ghost acting territorially for no reason. Ghost had sensed the ship as it had been there awhile. OJ works w/animals so he understands animal behavior, respects animals w/a healthy fear of them, and is thus able to take it on and not die.

I think there was a lot of inspiration taken from sea creatures with the design of Jean Jacket. Like how it unfurls like a jellyfish when threatened, and how it moves like a stingray or manta ray, and how it eats by sucking in its prey like some sea animals use a siphon, and even that clicking sound it makes reminds me of sonar that whales and porpoises sometimes make.

Maybe people went in expecting normal flying saucer and little green men stuff, and had to adjust to the themes about the animals and that the UFO itself is an animal, it'd probably go smoother on the second viewing for those people when they know what to expect and appreciate the details and how everything works together.

It’s sad cause if Jupe dealt with his trauma and actually tried to help people understand the ramifications of using spectacles to gain attention, he really could’ve been one of the heroes in the story. Instead he commodified it to make money and try to gain attention and fame from it like he had when he was younger which really is his and his families downfall.

Re: whether or not OJ lived I think it’s meant to be ambiguous- his being perfectly framed on the horse in the fog looking peaceful vs freaked out, anxious, tired, confused etc., under the sign that says ‘Out Yonder’ could be interpreted as a ghost saying a final goodbye from heaven (out yonder’). Personally, I like to think he’s alive ;). Also, the alien design is based on several sea creatures.

The whole thing with Jupe, Gordy and the shoe is just a commentary on spectacle, how people are attracted to weird things. While people were being mauled the only thing Jupe seemed to focus on was the shoe that was impossibly sitting on its nose. It has nothing to do with the alien, it was just something that kickstarted his obsession with spectacle. Which would later get him killed. He was saved from Gordy because he stared at the shoe during the rampage and then was looking at Gordy through the table cloth, two things that kept him from looking into the chimp's eyes. It was luck, or a 'miracle' which is how he saw the shoe. Later he looks directly into the eye of Jean Jacket and is killed. That's the point of that scene; people being attracted to spectacle even if it's a dangerous animal that can kill them, people focusing on the mystique and the amazement of it rather than the danger.

this is tied with Get Out for me as my favorite Peele movie, and Us is right below it. Jordan Peele never misses. as for the Gordy connection, the movie is about how humans will exploit any spectacle and use it for their own purposes, without really understanding what they’re doing or showing any respect. the title cards (aside from the movie title “Nope”) were the names of every animal that was pivotal to that section: the horses, Gordy, and finally Jean Jacket. everything about this movie is brilliant and has a significance, even the names. for example, the lead character is named OJ as in OJ Simpson, a man well known due to the spectacle around his trial. there are other little things too that you only really notice upon subsequent viewings. great reaction guys! ❤

Because I swear right after they show him under the table, he smiles just a little bit, and then it flashes to grown-up Jupe who’s sitting on his desk kind of with a little bit of a smile on his face. Don’t you think? So then that means he thought a good connection with this alien that he could just feed the horses and it’ll do what he says thinking it won’t do anything to hurt him 🙂just like Gordy

Others have said it with the Gordy relation and Jupe but there are a few other details: Jupe was so busy looking at the shoe standing up it saved him from looking at Gordy directly and being attacked. The idea of it being a bad miracle as it saved him but under terrible circumstances much like the conversation between Em and OJ. I think with Antler it's exploring the idea that it's usually white folks that end up stealing and taking credit for black talent. Much like Em & OJs great-great-grandfather not ever being credited for his work, he was forgotten (to this day, no one knows who the black jockey is in such a monumental piece of history). Also I appreciate the 'I see you' gesture from OJ to his sister. I might be reading too much into it but it feels like him passing the baton to Em and acknowledging her talents and leading the way to the future (literally on a futuristic electric bike while he's still on the horse). Possibly a wider comment on women of colour being the future of film and Hollywood? :) Sorry I wrote an essay!

Also everyone explained the Gordy the Chimp stuff but I wanted to add something not many people are talking about…Jordan Peele is friends with comedian Bobby Lee and at the premiere Jordan told Bobby that Gordy The Chimp connects to the alien like everyone explained already…but he is also meant to represent Jordan. So Jordan was a cast member of Mad TV (an SNL like sketch comedy show…that started based on a popular comedic magazine known for its cartoony art style) and so was Bobby Lee.
Basically Jordan had 5 days left on his contract with MAD TV and he was leaving the show…SNL contacted him and wanted him to come be a permanent cast member and play Barrack Obama. MAD TV refused to let Jordan out of his contract early even though they knew the opportunity he had and made his last days there miserable. Jordan also felt that MAD TV was all about exploitation making fun of terrible things and celebrities and pop culture/new stories. So the chimp is meant to represent Jordan and how he felt like they were exploiting him using him as a prop and not caring about him at all.
Also in the movie you can see a MAD TV magazine depicting the chimp Gordy’s Birthday incident.
Just wanted to share because I thought that was super interesting and you don’t really see or hear many people talking about this information. You can watch the podcast clip of Bobby Lee explaining the Chimp scene and what Jordan said he meant by it.

the main point of the movie as far as i know is showing what people would do to catch or/and see a spectacle.
for example the chimp or the alien and how we would even sometimes lose our lives like the documentary guy or lie to ourselves like jupe for it.
also i think its very very cool how when the chimp noticed jupe under the table the lamp in front of it spun and looked exactly like the alien so i think that shows how the two represent the same thing.

The Gordy's Home scene is necessary to show that Jupe didn't learn anything from the sitcom massacre. It is there to ground the story yet give it gravitas when Jupe's decision to do exactly the same thing he was helping with during his youth instead of learning and understanding what happened when he was a kid. He decides both in his youth and adulthood to do something regretful. But he isn't given long to regret his decisions the second time around.
He's giving small chuckles during his speech. He almost senses that what happened during the Gordy's Home massacre is going to happen again. Maybe not consciously, subconsciously. But every time he gives a chuckle he seems to be blind to what he might already know because of the Gordy's Home event. But it's just under the surface, which is coming out through the small chuckles.
He sent his kids to the Haywood's ranch for a prank to tell OJ and Em that he knows about the stolen decoy horse. What kind of person would do that? Instead of simply going to the authorities to get the metal horse back he sends his own children. They could have been killed doing what they did. It shows that Jupe's experience was hindered by what could possibly be considered psychopathy. He went through a lot during the Gordy scene and yet decided to do what he does for both the stolen horse decoy and getting back at OJ and Em, and setting up a show with something he doesn't understand. All he wants is a profit.
Sure, you can cut that "chimp" scene, but his character arc, or lack thereof, wouldn't be as devastating. The girl who Gordy put the brunt of his rage towards, who happened to be in the audience during The Star Lasso Experience, would have no merit. Peele seems to have wanted as much darkness and experience in these characters that without the "chimp" scene it wouldn't have worked. The fact that Jupe didn't learn anything about their experience and having invited Mary-Joe Elliott to the grand opening, he ends up bringing her back into the trauma. Does Jupe know that those horses are beamed up into a monster's month and belly? He mentioned that they haven't come out to greet him yet, so I'm not sure if he knows that OJs horses are no longer with us? Perhaps he longed to rekindle the tragic past? If the horses didn't return from the alien abduction like humans have claimed to, I think he might clearly know the danger but decides to write it off for a profit. Just like Mary-Joe and he did for the sitcom.
It all comes together rather nicely with perfect pacing to me.
Another thing. During Gordy's Home many think that the flying saucer played a part but if you remember that the alien eats electricity, and all the soundstage lights were on, it means that has nothing to do with it. The shoe standing on its heel is supposed to resemble a bad miracle and it is the reason Jupe made it out alive. Instead of locking eyes with Gordy, he was staring at it.
I absolutely love OJs character. His shut-up demeanor shows that he relates more to his horses than people around him. Some have speculated that he might be autistic. The way he behaved does suggest that. He is probably terrified but doesn't know how to show it. Some people are like that. People who have seen a lot of violence and those who are traumatized can act differently than normal folks tend to. The movie is about spectacle and it is ironic that OJ is very introverted about everything and everyone. He can't express himself like most do with dialogue. By the end he's talking a lot more because he is forced out of his shell.
Angel notices Holst, the cinematographer, popping pills, which is supposed to give the impression of a possible illness, which I think is supposed to let the audience know that whatever he's suffering from might be a terminal illness, so going out the way he did was kinda appropriate. That is why he decided to go out trying to film the impossible shot...but the film goes with him. It wouldn't likely make it if it falls from Jean Jacket and crashes to the ground. It would destroy the footage.
When OJ doesn't ride up to his sister and have her giddy-up onto the horse, and the fact that the sign OJ and Lucky are just below reads: Out Yonder tells me that OJ and Lucky aren't alive.
The end shape of Jean Jacket is supposed to resemble deep sea life, flowers and some say biblically accurate angels.
I think that Jean Jacket feeds on electricity. UFOs are said to mess with electricity and I think Peele was a genius in that we see the electricity being shut off whenever the flying saucer is nearby. If you pay attention during the scene when the audience of The Star Lasso Experience are being pulled into the digestive tract, you'll notice pulsing light coming from the insides. Having it feed off electricity makes it so that when the camera is showing what is happening to the audience, it can light the scene. Very disturbing.

I also love that despite the characters’ assumptions, it’s never confirmed to be an alien. In fact, considering it settled over a (relatively) small area because it was being fed, it probably doesn’t travel through space… plus it has to eat what twice a week? No way it’s an alien. It’s 100% Earthling! Which makes this much more terrifying
