I have vivid memories of two holidays with my Mum when I was about 8 years old, staying in some of the great B&Bs, donkey rides on the beach and visiting Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole. Tim's visit to the bathing area by Knightstone Island brought back particular memories of the last day of one of our holidays, munching chips on the beach and catching crabs along the walkway with kids I'd just met :)
As a local it’s nice to see an outside perspective on our town. The Tropicana (now a funfair in summer and ice rink in winter) used to be an outdoor pool with the tallest diving boards in Europe and later became a fun pool which I remember from my childhood, however it never did very well due to the weather and expensive maintenance costs so the council closed it. The Grand Pier has actually burned down twice and the theatre was lost in the 1930’s fire so doubtful many alive today will remember shows from that era, although it’s possible there was a theatre there in the 50s but not 100% sure. However the main space in the pavilion is also used for shows and dinner events, they move all the arcade machines from the main floor when they do this, have been to a few Christmas parties there! In the first few years of the Grand Pier’s life they extended the jetty out the back by 1500ft so steamers could land and compete with the old Birnbeck Pier but the currents were so strong they weren’t able to safely land so it was demolished except for a stub which the function rooms are now built on. I was also in the last couple of people to leave the pier as they were shutting it the night before the fire, didn’t realise then it would be the last time we’d get to go on the pier we’d grown up with and as good as the new one is, the previous one was better in my opinion
I have a vague memory from the mid 70s when I was about 10 of going up to the high board and it seeming a damned sight higher once you were up there, turning around a bit sharpish and diving of the lower board.
@@paulhanson5164 I would love to have scene the iconic diving boards but sadly they were demolished the year before I was born. Apparently they had become unsafe due to the sea air corroding the concrete and rebar and despite being a listed Art Deco structure the council was granted permission to demolish them
The old pier had so much character and as a kid I remember being scared to walk on the planks, don’t like the rebuild at all when u get in there it’s just another arcade, the new owners wanted to change the old look but were denied then we had a fire 🤔 coincidental I don’t think😔
Fantastic place, something for everyone, mix of traditional and modern, and the grand pier is incredible, it's like a TARDIS, doesn't look that big from outside but inside its vast, only been there once, watching this I want to go again.
Tim was a TV Presenter on Channel Four and on Sky before launching independently on TH-cam. His videos are excellent 👌. Thank you Tim for great content!
Was born in weston, but moved away about 18 years ago, i go back when I can to see family, I do miss the beach and the sea, the pier was free to go on before the fire, not so keen on the rebuild pier, I do miss the old one, so many memories growing up. And the Tropicana was an outdoor swimming pool loved going there as a kid. Weston has changed alot over the years. Loved you video. And plus evey year you get some stupid people get they car stuck in the mud 😒 🙄, even tho they are signs everywhere lol.
Grove park and the quarry are amazing places that most people don't find. Also explore all of grove park as it's not just the cafe. Bluebell woods near uphill is also a great place to go for walks
This is the nearest beach for me, a hour on a direct train, which GWR do run more direct trains in the summer from London all the way there & luckily stops at Swindon, when the weather is good everyone just goes down for the day ❤ been there 3 or 4 times this year already, I love it never gets old, I actually won a history dvd this year on the pier which shows the history from the first fire, to the 2008 one and what it is now got to see it get rebuilt to what it is now, some of the original structure is still there, deep in the ground, but had to replace most of it. Believe it or not, the sea does come in on a rare occasion and I've actually been in the sea there but if you go down to the right of the pier they have built a all year round pool, with a bridge over it, I have a short of it on my channel Love western super mud (I've seen people get stuck before, but the emergency services was fast to respond)
Brilliant video. I was born in Weston & have lived. Here all my life….. I remember going on the former Grand Pier b4 the newer one. They had a really cool big wheel. Which we went on…. And Tin Can Alley which was these Cats. With Bins that opened out & you had to throw the balls in. Great fun. The Bumper cars were good too. But sadly in 2008 I believe…. The Grand pier as it was caught fire. I remember going down that day to see what happened. There were thousands of people down there all crowded along the promonade. Some crying in disbelief. The prom covered in 15 fire engines. Sinse then though. Our Pier has risen again & bought joy to our town. We like the cafes & love Penny arcades. Dismal Land was one of the Best Events our town could wish for. We were lucky enough to go. We often visit Sandbay too. Kewstoke. Next door. There’s lots to do in Weston.
@@WalkWithMeTim there's good bits and bad bits. They tore down the bowling alley years ago to regenerate it but then left the area a waste land. The council charges too much rent (more than Bristol City centre) for shops in the buildings they own so we're losing alot of our high street as well. It's nice having the beach on your doorstep though and residents could apply for a card so they don't have to pay for the pier lol
Weston Super Mare is the closest seaside type place to myself in Worcestershire so I have been on many occasions. I will do overnight stays with my daughters and they enjoy the Grand Pier. I have had some nice meals in The Old Thatched Cottage in the past, so if it is still the same owners, I would recommend. Great Video Tim. …. Smithy
Ooh my childhood holiday destination When I came back to uk in 2014 about 20 family members all went for the Day Loved it. I live in Perth Western Australia now, but still love WSM 💕
Weston was my teenage years in the 90s, it's the closest coast to where we live, and we used to come down in our cars and drive about Weston in the evenings 😂 the pier was always visited. Compared to a lot of seaside towns Weston is quite drab looking, but it'll always be a place close to my heart.
Funland is built on the old Tropicana site which was a outdoor swimming centre . If you look near the back on the wall it still has the original beach mural painted on it 🌊⛱ (great vid by the way👍)
Loved this as not been since the last pier fire, 28/07/2008 and I did go to a show on the pier, I will always have a soft spot for this seaside. Great vlog and you definitely covered the neg as well as the positive, it’s for sure old seaside with a hint of modern, the knickerbocker glory cafe that I visited as a child some 40 years ago is still their.. Thank you so very much
@@WalkWithMeTim yes… your vlog has made me want to visit Western super mare again. I was feeling nostalgic and your vlog definitely brought back, treasured memories as lived in London, for over 25 years and of course, love it… thank you 😊
I live 15 minutes away from Weston. And alot has changed since 2021 I must say I go there every now and again and the high street is something else. While places like Worle, West Wick, Locking, Uphill and Worlebury and Kewstoke aren't actually as bad as people say they are. A few of my friends and relatives refer to Weston as "Weston Super Mud"since the beach isn't good or the sea! Keep up the good work Tim! 👍
I love Weston .. I live near Bristol so I come here often .. I like Clevedon and Portishead too which are coastal towns . If u like Piers , walk along Clevedon Pier , also Clevedon is where some filming was done for the Itv series 'Broadchurch' ... and Weston is famous for Guy Fawkes illuminated Carnival , which I think u should come and see . (FRIDAY 10TH NOVEMBER if your free)
Thanks for your Weston Super Mare video Tim.I along with my parents and my grandparents on my dad's side stayed there in a hotel called The Willow, oit was really awful, the landlady couldn't cook, the eggs were always undercooked,my dad was always complaining about it at breakfast every morning he came down for breakfast I remember the landlady was having a new swimming pool installed but she wouldn't let the guests use it but she let her kids and their friends use it,which was very unfair. We said we wouldn't return to Weston and haven't been back since.
Weston Super Mare is a great place to go. It's only a train journey and an hour from Cardiff. 10:00 It's now called Split Rock, to the right is Flat Holm. Thank you Tim for the tour on Weston Super Mare.
I didn't get to see your vid as it premiered, Tim However, I was doing my own Walk With Me today, visiting my daughter down on the Kent coastal village of Dymchurch. It's definitely not the breathtaking sweeping shores of Norfolk but has a quaint olde worlde charm of a seaside resort from times gone by. Ate my weight in good wholesome seafood too. 😀👍
Thanks so much! My family and I plan to go next Saturday. You helped out so much with the best tour on Weston super Mare. Nothin' else on TH-cam explain'd it as you did. Thanks again!
A very interesting tour Tim. I now have come back to live in one of the old Victorian buildings at the back of the pier, it’s lovely. I watch the bods on the beach and when it’s windy, out come the wind surfers. And then there’s the enduro to watch once a year. A great place to live
We went to Weston super mare quite a few years ago before the Pier fire. I remember walking along Brean Downs which overlooks the bay, quite a view from there. Great video Tim brings back some memories.
Another big wheel Weston super mare a resort I have been too many many times never changes when you were in the area if had time a visit to cheddar gorge would have been spectacular 👍👍
Another excellent video Tim! There is a brilliant urban explore video of Birnbeck Pier! Well worth a watch. Closest I've been to Weston is Minehead (Butlins - not owned by Britannia Hotels Group!!!!!), and I have a friend who lives in Clevedon, but I have to say the new pier looks amazing inside!
I was there in July and I enjoyed it even though it was a very hot day, I know that Oasis had a photo took on Weston beach for one of their albums Roll With it, I enjoy going there.
Hi Tim really nice beach. We drove on a beach in North Wales on a beach called Black Rock Sands. Thankyou for sharing with us love to you as always Tracey 💕 xxxx
A really enjoyable video it’s really nice is Weston we go a few times of the year for the day as it’s not far from where I live thanks for showing this until the next one 😊
Great walk Tim, only ever been to WSM once and that was at night last year but we did get to watch the sunset behind the walkway across the pool and it was simply stunning. Your video as reminded me I need to go back 🙂👍
we used to go on Birnbeck Pier and there were loads of pool tables in the main building as well as a cafe. There used to be a few shops at the entrance as well but thats all gone now sadly.....Like a lot of seaside places its suffered with under funding, unemployment and homelessness which makes the main shopping area a bit rundown and unkept. But it does have the best fish and chips restaurant and take away we have ever been to called Papa's on Waterloo Street, we stop there on the way back from Devon or Cornwall its that good...
The Funland park is no longer there - it was a temporary use of the Tropicana building for a couple of years (same space was also used for Banksie's Dismaland. Being converted into a music venue this year. It's a real shame the sand sculpture festival wasn't there when you were there, has been there for years but gone now. Marine Lake is lovely when it's fully functioning especially at night with the lights reflecting on the water :)
Weston has 3 piers, the 2 you mentioned plus that diamond shaped short pier which used to be an aquarium. Funland was originally the open air swimming pool called the Tropicana and was recently used as the BANKSY Dismaland art installation - the area is now a multi-use platfrom. The new pier was going to have a sky tower at the far end but the company building it went bust or something and I believe they could not find another company either willing or able to complete it.
My mom worked here in the 60'sto learn english. She worked in a posh hotel as a maid. Unfortunaletly, I don't know the name of the hotel. But it was fun to see what this town looks like.
I was there for a day out in August for the first time in years. I was impressed with the new pier, I could have spent a day or two in there when I was a kid ( as long as my parents had won the lottery )
Old pier definitely better 👍 was a good value day out 👍 the new pier was a scale factor of 10-20x more expensive than the old one when it reopened. When I was a kid I wrote a letter to Anekka Rice to try and get her to fix Birnbeck pier on Challenge Anekka 😁. Has been a state all of my 33 years!
Visited in 2014, loads of us got on the Wheel it started up, I had a panic attack, my bro in law had to get them to stop it and let me off, oh my Days ( I got so scared ) 🤣🤣🤣I did go to one of the Radio 1 beach concerts as a Teenager, the best. I live in Australia, but I love Weston super Mare 💕💕💕💕💕
Tim often to get up to the pier. a little train thing, often runs peoples back and forth, Nice to see Funland, as the Tropicana building had beeb empty for years
Great vlog Tim. Not sure if you’re aware, but the’old pier’ is now owned by the local council and talks are happening to revive it. Who knows? Maybe we will see another fun pier in Weston to compete with the likes of Blackpool or maybe a museum?
I was born in Bristol myself but I grew up and still live in Weston-super-Mare. In regards to the Grand Pier's £1 entry fee, I have HEARD that you can get on without paying it *if* proven that you live in the town (though I have a feeling it's £1 to get on either way so don't take this as granted) even though I swear deep down that it used to actually be free until recent years. I just ABOUT remember the old building before it caught fire in '08 (and also remember the brief part which re-opened shortly after the fire happened). Weston was also the location for the "T4 on the Beach" event that used to air every summer on Channel 4 during the mid-00s and early-2010s. Another thing is that right near my family home, there's a plaque for the country's First Lord of Admiralty during WW2, The Earl Hillsborough (who was born in the town).
I've glad you included the old pier birnbeck in your video it's in n danger collapsing into the sea in near future if nothing is done to save it the council are battling with the current owner to get it back from them and let the rnli run the pier the council are hoping to issue a compulsive purchase order to get the pier back and save it
Can you please do a video on my home town of Barry island please that would be lovely to see I’ve just started binge watching your videos and love them
I can remember Weston super Mare with my family, one time we actually saw a car getting caught by the tide. There was also a lovely outdoor swimming pool just by the beach, so if the tide was out we could still have a swim in the pool.
Hi Tim. I liked your vlog on western supernate. Piers were interesting. But I take it you didn't go for a paddle considering the long tiring walk down the beach to the sea. Marie
What a lot of people don't know is that where you've parked was actually a gift from the Queen hence the name Royal Sands. Sadly, our council still charge the earth for what should be free.
The name Royal Sands was given to the building when it was developed into apartments after being derelict for a decade, prior to that it was called the Royal Hospital, a name which it gained sometime in the first half of the 20th Century when we had a King on the throne. When it opened in 1871 it was known as the West of England Sanitorium and like many buildings in Weston was designed by local architect Hans Price. You might be thinking of the Queen Alexandra Memorial Hospital which whilst not a gift from royalty was funded in part by Thomas Knyfton who owned Uphill Manor

Thanks for watching Debbie and Patrick is it spring in New Zealand
A really enjoyable video it’s really nice is Weston we go a few times of the year for the day as it’s not far from where I live thanks for showing this until the next one 😊
Glad you enjoyed it June!
Great walk Tim, only ever been to WSM once and that was at night last year but we did get to watch the sunset behind the walkway across the pool and it was simply stunning. Your video as reminded me I need to go back 🙂👍

Glad you enjoyed it
It's got the worst online abuse in UK a Gangstalking town !
Radioooo One On the Roaaaddd !!! Smiley Miley Time lol
Lol
Great footage 👏 going next week. You have a new follower.
we used to go on Birnbeck Pier and there were loads of pool tables in the main building as well as a cafe.
I'll have to check it out
The Funland park is no longer there - it was a temporary use of the Tropicana building for a couple of years (same space was also used for Banksie's Dismaland. Being converted into a music venue this year.
It's a real shame the sand sculpture festival wasn't there when you were there, has been there for years but gone now.
Marine Lake is lovely when it's fully functioning especially at night with the lights reflecting on the water :)
Gangstalking goes on here!
Thsnks Ian for the info
Christ Tim, had holiday with family here 1981 and 82. Remember walking along old pier too. Shame looks like it will be be demolished.
yes lets hope it doesn't
My mom worked here in the 60'sto learn english. She worked in a posh hotel as a maid. Unfortunaletly, I don't know the name of the hotel. But it was fun to see what this town looks like.
:-)
Never been to Weston Super Mare so really enjoyed watching. Thanks Tim😊
Hey bridgette, thanks .. yes this was my 2nd ever time
If you have any class at all ? Don't come here.. Worst online abuse in the UK! the locals here are like sad petty little kids !
I was there for a day out in August for the first time in years. I was impressed with the new pier, I could have spent a day or two in there when I was a kid ( as long as my parents had won the lottery )
lol
Wow looks amazing 🤩
Wait and see 😉

Tim often to get up to the pier. a little train thing, often runs peoples back and forth, Nice to see Funland, as the Tropicana building had beeb empty for years
yes it wasn't running that day .. and I paid £1 lol
Another great video Tim.
Thanks again!
I like it old, childhood memories, I have just applied for a job there
Great vlog Tim. Not sure if you’re aware, but the’old pier’ is now owned by the local council and talks are happening to revive it. Who knows? Maybe we will see another fun pier in Weston to compete with the likes of Blackpool or maybe a museum?
That would be good
I was born in Bristol myself but I grew up and still live in Weston-super-Mare.
Great informative vlog 👍 just down the road from us, what a lovely day you had too 😎 thanks Tim 😊
Thanks Alli.. where are you then?
@@WalkWithMeTim we are in Bristol 😊
oh ill google it
If you have any class at all ? Don't come here. Worst online abuse in the UK the locals here are like little kids !!
I was there 2 days before this video. Ate at the Thatched Cottage which was good!
never eaten in there!
It must be so helpful when editing video shot on a nice sunny day, some of those shots with the sky behind are lovely very poster like
it does start to hurt my eyes lol
I've glad you included the old pier birnbeck in your video it's in n danger collapsing into the sea in near future if nothing is done to save it the council are battling with the current owner to get it back from them and let the rnli run the pier the council are hoping to issue a compulsive purchase order to get the pier back and save it
yes that would be good to see it looking good again
Build Back Better
Who is the current owner?Y don't they do something?
That looks nice I will go there now
Go for it
It's suicide central here! Worst online abuse in Britain !! And gangstalking !!

I can remember Weston super Mare with my family, one time we actually saw a car getting caught by the tide. There was also a lovely outdoor swimming pool just by the beach, so if the tide was out we could still have a swim in the pool.
My dad did a course in Weston super mare & it’s changed so much 🤔
Was down here last week myself 😎
hope you had a good time
Often went into Weston on my day off when I worked at the UK worst holiday park, it was a long time ago though 😂

Absolutely
It's suicide central here ?? Worst online abuse in Britain !
What a lot of people don't know is that where you've parked was actually a gift from the Queen hence the name Royal Sands. Sadly, our council still charge the earth for what should be free.
I did not know that .... thanks tim
That looks interesting Tim.
lol its a great tour!
Often went into Weston on my day off when I worked at the UK worst holiday park, it was a very long time ago though 😂
