He says that there's no passion in the design but I think the Japanese put their passion into the build quality, old Toyotas are just so reliable.

I had more fun in my 1994 1.3 Toyota Corolla estate than any other car I’ve owned. I bought it at 60k and got rid of it at 276k. Did nothing but change brakes tyres and oil and thrashed it every day I drove it. It never let me down and surprised many a boy racer. It was predictable handling, forgiving when pushed to the limit, fast, comfortable, spacious, cheap to run and ultimately the one I would choose of all the cars I owned. Yes the 1340 mini was more fun, as was the supercharged BMW E18 but I was constantly working on them to maintain them. The Toyota? Just drive it hard and put it away wet and it was always ready for more. So yes, best car ever.

My dad has had a 1986, 1987 and 1985 toyota corolla, my mother had a newer one and my grandma still has one. Hers is a 98 with over a quarter of a million miles on it, if everything goes right i will be getting her car because it isn't getting used anymore. I took it for a drive and it ran and transmission shifted just like it did years ago when i was in grade school, needs a little suspension work. None of the corollas my family had/has have given many problems, just normal things like oil, power steering hose and simple things like that. Why have a fancy car when you can get a simple one that will get you from A to B for many years to come?

Jeremy has said many times that he's the world's most impractical man, so of course he would hate the Corolla. I've had one, and he's right, it is quite dull.....but people don't buy the Corolla for excitement, they buy it because it's reliable.

When I become wealthy, even if I have a garage full of luxury cars, I'll still have a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic in the fleet.
Because those luxury cars will be money pits in 5 years, while the Civic or Corolla have a long life ahead. Due to friction and gravity, eventually some parts in the Civic or Corolla will break, but the fortunate advantage is that the parts are readily available, affordable, and I won't be bound to the mercy of the dealership for parts. Can't say the same with the luxury brands, for example: Mercedes Benz S-Class owners in Australia either can't get parts or take forever to get parts from Germany.

corolla and camry are the best care you can get - get them cheap, take good care of them and they will last you forever - and you wont have to stress about people denting your car and stuff. fuck cars, from childhood we are brainwashed by society that a car defines our worth - and in the end cars become one of the biggest wastes of money in our lives.

Superb transportation appliance. About as exciting as a washing machine.
It gets you where you want to go in a reasonable amount of time, fairly comfortably and cheaply, with no fuss, every single time. I love it. I hate it. I've owned two, and have one now. I'm almost 65, and it may be the last car I ever own.

Two of my cousins were sitting on a two lane two way highway trying to a take a left turn when a full size suburban rear ended them at 40 mph. Luckily my cousin some what saw it coming and was able to steer away from incoming traffic. That little Corolla left both of them with zero injuries while the whole trunk crumpled and took the impact. Amazing cars that saved two of my family members lives. Me and my brother also shared a corolla that was a generation before this platform and what a awesome car. 30+mpg, half million miles on and just wouldn't stop. Sold it to an idiot for $300 and he blew it up somehow. But I now have a 3rd gen 4runner (best SUV ever!) and 3 supras. Best of both worlds as far as toyota's go.

I have a 1992 celica GT convertible. It has a 2.2l 5SFE engine which is also in most Camry's and Corollas. It is designed purely for longevity. I love that it always works and I can work on it myself. in 2017, she will be a classic. A new paint job for her : D

Im pretty sure no Corollas came with anything higher than an 1.8 engine in its lifetime. I have a 1996 1.8L Toyots Corolla LE with 229907 miles on it (370000 Kilometers) and its reliability is never in doubt as I continue to beat on it in canadas harsh weather conditions, but man i always wanted a Celica lol.

Actually, you're not going to believe this!
Just yesterday, while driving in Vancouver,I spotted in the front of me.Tenth generation (E 140),Corolla XRS.
It had deep black paint and spoilers, all around the car,and set of nice aluminum wheels.
So today I went to check on "Wikipedia",to find out,is it really high-perfomance grade of Corolla,(Like XRS ninth generation),or just a badge.
The XRS (North American tenth generation,2006-2013),grade is equiped with the 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE I4 engine, the same used in the Camry.
      It has 158 hp @ 6 000 rpm,and Torque is 162 Ib-ft @ 4 000 rpm..

The only thing I hate about my 1996 Corolla DX: it is red. It is red and it's all mottled, faded and nearly down bare to the metal in numerous places. Oh, and the plastic (WHY?!) interior door handles have all broken... the headliner is in tatters with rotted gritty adhesive free to blow about all over, trunk lever snapped off, seat belt receptacle doesn't latch (passenger's is what I've used from 2008 and it's going too), basically all of the cosmetics/interior is deteriorated and falling apart in live time, the 15W factory speakers suck and have long since blown (and what the hell was with 4" speakers in the doors, man?) and she also doesn't see quite 32mpg anymore either... probably not even 26mpg... dunno, because the trip meter stopped working in 2006... *HOWEVER* I never, but I mean never ever, have engine trouble (*unrelated to routine maintenance as like hoses, belts and seals/gaskets, battery, PCV valve etc. etc. EVEN THEN, it's once in a blue moon). Not bad at all for $6,000 secondhand in 1998. Can't score like that anymore, tell you what. She blue books for MAYBE $800 in "pristine condition" today... but in reality, she's absolutely priceless. I have literally had people beating down the front door to buy her but I won't sell (I am no fool). I'm running her until she's legit totaled... but 218,000 miles and that is STILL green for these 7AFE's. Been best buds since I was 8 years old and the day she dies, that's the day I finally go in for two wheels (I loathe all cars made after 1998, you see. Case in point, ALUMINUM blocks? ARE YOU ******* KIDDING ME? AND FOR $20,000+? OH, HELL NAW!!!)... but I'll more likely than not be pushing 40 years old by then, no joke. OH! And we've put MAYBE $4,000 into her for ROUTINE MAINTENANCE... she STILL hasn't cost more than we'd bought her for. THAT is why you'd choose a Toyota... but a 1997 or earlier. New ones aren't what they were... still head and shoulders above the rest, but still not as good or better than they ought to be now, very sad to say. Toyota certainly has shifted focus over to eye-candy and needless luxury amenities, sacrificing some parts and build quality and reliability for them, same as all the rest of them. It really is a crying shame, that.
Look, you're still better off buying a 1990's and fixing it up than you are a brand spanking new model. By very far. It'll be a better vehicle and cost you less than the abomination they're asking for the newer, inferior model years. Believe it.

I don't know for sure about the UK, but here in Australia, that particular model Corolla seems to be much like a 1990s version of the original VW Beetles. They're quite compact in size, yet so many people have been keeping them alive and you still see so many people driving one, and it's not mostly just P-platers and old people that drive them either.

The Toyota Corolla was a boring square box. But then so was the VW Golf! Seriously, take a look at it, I always thought the Golf at the time was just an insipid box on wheels. So were many cars of that era. But over the decades, Toyota learnt and improved the shape of the Corolla and so did VW with the Golf. I now like the look of the modern Corolla and the Golf.

6:55 Clarkson actually do have a point on that question. Sure, I wouldn't mind owning a sensible and reliable car for everyday. But if it looks like that Corolla, I'll just pass.
I don't want to buy a car as just a mere tool of transportation. If I wanted to use vehicles as a tool of transportation, I would rather get a bus or an LRT!
