As a child. I would go get silage with a International M with a tarp heater cab covering the engine with a windshield. Load the wagon with a scoop shovel. Then drive it to the cows and unload it with the scoop shovel. Of course in Western Ky. We didn’t have the extreme below digit temp’s. The temp’s would be down in the 20’s. You learn a lot about yourself working in the cold. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
They used to say don't talk bad about farmers with your mouth full, I imagine if more people saw what farmers had to do just to get by they wouldn't grumble as much as they do. Thank you and the others that push and push to do what you do without much gratitude. Some of us are very thankful. Merry Christmas to you and your family !!
We only fed 5 big bales today, a wee bit warmer here... But a cab tractor would have definitely been nice!! 20° and wind chill of -1°... If the humidity is just right, a few days after cleaning the feed barn we have a different smell here. Like a sweet/rotten smell. When the vultures are around, it attracts them for miles... Maybe your smell is something to do with the hay and straw underneath everything?? Time to get a truck out and haul some snow off.. Looking back, yup...we have it so easy now.. Keep them fed and bedded!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!!!
My grandfather was born (1897) and raised in Gardar, ND Pembina County. He would tell me stories about taking care of the animals in the conditions in this video. He was tough as nails. I'm down here in Georgia today feeding my registered Herefords in 20 degree weather trying to keep it in perspective.
I have a friend that grew up on a sheep farm in North Dakota. He said that they often had to dig the sheep out of the snow after a blizzard. You guys sure earn your keep. Hang in there and try to find a warm spot.
Man your getting hit hard this year with the weather your doing a great job taking care of your animals some people don't know what there talking about, I really like your videos
Looks pretty chilly for sure. Thankfully we missed the snow out of this deal. We aren't set up for that kind of snow and this much cold. We can usually handle one or the other okay. We've been down around negative 5 to 10 with a windchill of negative 35. That's plenty cold for us southern boys. Hope everything makes it through okay. Atleast you have a decent set of wind breaks up.
We r getting the same kind of weather up here in Saskatchewan Canada...its hard on the cows but we do the best we can for them...merry Christmas and happy new year to you and all your family
For perspective the coldest weather I’ve ever experienced was -45C around the clock in Fort MacMurray Alberta in January. We left our trucks plugged in and running around the clock for two weeks straight.
As far as that smell you mentioned… I got a spot near my barn that stinks like death and mangy dirty wet dog… I keep my eyes on swivel for a bear when I’m over there, cause that’s what bears smell like too… only 1 spot on my property I can smell the smell, maybe a bear moved then my property and slept near the barn for a night, maybe it’s holed up somewhere in the rocks…
I could but the problem is they rub on everything and would break the running lights. Happened before. I have three different windbreak areas, more than I need. I put straw down regularly but not during a blizzard. It just gets covered so I wait until it’s over. Today is way better. They all look well. Thanks
Man it’s 34 here at night where I am, I get butt hurt when my 4 dexters can’t make a square bale last 3 days… I couldn’t imagine having to feed 9+ round bales in a day….
Think this is worse than the last blizzard a week ago... less snow, but it's miserable. I don't remember a time in my life it being -20, with wind, and fresh 6" of snow. Dad says he remembers something similar back in the early 90s and 80s, but it's been a while. Just hoping the critters do good, and nothing breaks or freezes up is about all. Been covering up the water fountains with a blanket and wooden insert overnight to seal them off until morning.
3 things cows need - wind protection, water, and food. With cattle, their digestion generates a lot of heat so when they huddle together they essentially keep each other warm. When I stand amongst them, can really feel the heat. Baby calves on the other hand is a different story, they need a warm dry place.
Actually have 4 barns now. Use them during calving for the baby calves. Two are full of equipment now and the other two are being used for our yearling calves. Cows have three windbreaks. They do well. Thanks.
My dogs get to stay in our heated entryway. When I go out they want out to run and go to the bathroom. And yes they have fur. There good and spoiled. I would never hurt my animals. Thanks for your concern. Merry Christmas.
Wow that's cold...can't believe your dogs wouldn't have gotten forst bite on their ears and feet...this week I have your cold....bronchitis and it's hit me hard.....stay warm....omg you my have to invest in some big winter shelters...with roofs...but yes that would be expensive.....yes 100% those old time men and women....had to be tough....my dad was born in 1935....#7 in the line of 13.....and his dad had double pneumonia....the doctor came over and cut two holes on his back and fished tube in to drain out the liquid....while awake.....I did say awake....!!!! Omg and they heated/cooked with wood....the kids except for the last one had all been born at home....and they had a dairy farm.....they boys would get a saw or an axe for Xmas.....dad said the people in his dads day were so tough the ate raw meat then sat in boiling water to cook it....😉😉😉😉
You also are a tough man. My hat off to you. God bless you and your family during these tough cold times.
Well we are in N.E. Tx and last weekend was rough............you guys up there are the real deal, God bless.
I respect you for being diligent in providing for the livestock, which in turn is a provision for many people! Merry Christmas! Blessings.
Thank you. I guess it’s how I was raised. It’s what I know. Merry Christmas to you.
You have awesome dogs Greg

Agreed 👍
Great video
I still use an open station 1959 560D Turbo Farmall with a Westendorf 21 loader to feed my cattle. Yes, it is cold. -21 today.
Oh boy. It’s so cold to be out. Stay safe.

Merry Christmas to you, too.

Thank you. Merry Christmas
Near Regina Sask. here. I can relate to the cold, similar weather. Just on an acreage watching the snow go by.
Oh boy. I’ve never seen a bear here. That would be something. Stay safe.
OH MY GOSH. I couldn't handle that kind of cold.
Stay safe it Thursday here in Kentucky just now hitting us here
Good luck. Hope it’s not as bad for you.
can you use the trailers as windbreaks?
I could but the problem is they rub on everything and would break the running lights. Happened before. I have three different windbreak areas, more than I need. Whew, too cold. Which part of ND are you? Stay safe and Merry Christmas!
West Central
@DiamondHeartRanch Thanks. My grandparents homesteaded north of Belfield in Zenith.
❤️🎄☕️
Looks really cold there
Lol. Right! Is it warmer by you. I didn’t know if 5 miles makes a difference.

I don't know the first thing about cow's so i don't know how they keep from freezing to death from constantly being in that cold like that.

Poor cattle. Perhaps this summer you can build a barn to help protect them

Why on earth would you have your dogs out in that weather? Stay safe.

Dont care if dogs have fur they can get frostbite real fast when its that cold really sad
