    I always assumed he wore a cape because he was a nobleman, a Count. So, naturally, his manner of dress would be a bit fancier than most everyone.

      Me too. Like you pointed out, he's a Count. A Boyar. So Counts can't look cool? Counts can't have a sense of style?

    Yes in the 1931 movie during the London sequences Dracula, who only comes out at night, is in evening dress and with evening dress you either where a formal overcoat or an opera Cape which is lined in white by the way not red to match the black and white colours of your full dress Eveningwear. European X Patriots of the time, if they had been awarded a neck order would sometimes wear them because this is commonplace with civilian for full dress. And a long black cape let you play with that swirl it around and use it like batwings. Predatorial animals naturally have long incisor canine teeth so it was logical to give that a tribute to later vampire make ups. And I can tell you from having worked in funeral homes around a lot of dead bodies in the embalming process, dead people look very pale because the blood sinks to the bottom of the body and has to be pumped out and replaced with embalming fluid which contains a red dye to bring some colour and natural life like appearance back to The corpse for the public viewing. This is all very understandable of course. So a vampire who is supposed to be the undead is portrayed as having rather pale skin. Most Victorian men wore their hair combed straight back held in place with a variety of oil or beeswax pomade type products. Remember in one of Draculas hideouts they find his hair brushes and other toiletries in London. I think you could pretty well ignore all the other silliness in the caricatures and cartoons concerning the character. We can only guess what a rich man in the Balkans living by himself would have used for clothes at his home like castle Dracula. He probably wore Black wool trousers a high buttoning black waistcoat a black morning coat but probably a white shirt with a stiff collar. This is basically what Christopher Lee has on except they gave him of four button sack coat instead of the morning coat or frockcoat. I work with these things all the time collect them make them use them And film them and when you do living history and historical interpretation you come to understand how everyone is going to look and behave and it takes the mystery out of it.

    Correct me if I'm wrong - but Bela Lugosi's iconic widow's peak is kind of like James Cagney calling someone a 'dirty rat' or Humphrey Bogart telling his piano player to 'play it again, Sam.' If you look at pretty much any scene of Bella as Drac - he actually doesn't have a widow's peak.

    • @CobCrawler
      @CobCrawler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could it be that it was rather taken from Grampa Munster whos design was either ispired by "Werewolf of London" as well or took Lugosi's look in more grotesque/ comedy direction?

  • @andreykuzmin4355
    @andreykuzmin4355 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    He wears a cloak because he is a Boyar, a Vallachian nobleman, a warrior-prince. Also flowing cloak boyh resembles wings of a bat or a preybird, and adds dynamic to his movement. If we look at every depiction, Dracula does not wears a cloak in every scene; Count Orlok doesen't wear cloak at all! I guess cloak simply was too memorable, so we remember it from all of Count's outfits.

    The reason Dracula has blue skin is because that is one of the colors of a dead body. Also Drac was supposedly undead half supernatural and human. When a vampire feeds on its victims blood...the natural color somewhat comes back as to fool the living.

    While it might be apocryphal, I have heard the high back collar on the cape came from the stage play where it hid the actors head so when he turned around he could drop through a trap door leaving he cape behind and appear to simply disappear with only his cape left to collapse on the stage floor.

    • @madillj
      @madillj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Steinmeyer, in 'Disappearing the Elephant. . .' credits a NY magician [whose name I can't find at the moment] for the NYC premiere, with assisting with the physical supernatural staging and the cape was used as you said-- a brief wrestling struggle U/S in the Library with the two men and the long cape also having the shoulders shaped on a lightweight wire form inside it, I suspect also helping to hold the collar up, could be dragged about, assuming 'Dracula' is facing U/S with some anatomical volume, while the actor drops through a floor trap [probably not a 'Vampire Trap', from 1820; that was a new improved vertical scrimmed double-leaved, spring-loaded door in the bookshelves that allowed 'Dracula' to be seen before he entered the room, from a black-draped green-lit alcove offstage; by re-balancing the lighting as 'Dracula' passes through the painted books and shelves he appears to pass through solid objects]

So in my opinion his Cape gives him more of a shadow of Darkness look, since he is the lord of darkness.
