You know, that last line really made me think.
"So, If Fooly Cooly seems to you like an incoherent mess, just remember how you saw the world when you were 12."
I've had that exact thought before, and I'm starting to think I also didn't understand this show at all when I was younger. I'll have to re-watch it soon.
    Great video, keep making them.

I love this show sooo much, I've only seen it about 5 times. I think the age you watch it is a large part of the experience .
Like, I was actually 12 when I first obsessed over it, then I forgot about it for a while and came back to watch it again twice at 15 and I saw it a lot differently. But it was amazing both times, I was just seeing it through two distinct lenses and appreciating messages aimed at people going through those phases, its really cool how the creators were able to do that

I remember seeing FLCL for the first time on AS when I was like 7 or 8. It was so hypnotic and enthralling that I risked getting in trouble for staying up too late and watching TV just to see it again and again. And now, 15 years later, I can still say its one of the greatest anime I've ever seen. It accomplishes in 6 episodes what other series need hundreds of episodes to do: Its a legend.

you know what's weird about FLCL? i watch it at different points in my life and i always identify most with a different character every time. when i was a kid, i was attached to Canti. then when i was a nilihistic bratty teen, i liked Mamimi best. then college came around, and suddenly i liked Naota. it's like, i see each character and their motivations clearer each time i see it, depending on who I am as a person each time.

Great video (as always). One of the things I really liked about the show was it seemed like (though I know it wasn't) that each new playthrough of the show I would notice something new like it was added to the show. I kept feeling like they were changing one little thing and then putting it up on tv.
But the show was great, and the songs were pretty good to. I eventually bought them and listened to them in my car quite a bit (until I had listened to them way to much!).

In the past ten years, the role of maturity and growing up has changed.
Like how Scream 4 was created as a satire for modern horror films, a newer season could touch on society's forced views on maturity and nostalgia. It could be about someone who is older, like 14 or 15, another age where you have to show you need to grow up.
Maybe have a girl's side of growing up. I dunno. it just sounds cool

One of the most underrated channels on TH-cam hands down. He needs to keep doing broad popular topic docs, i.e. Pixar, C&H, Bman, Sman, to increase his sub base. Then once he explodes, which if there is a YT God he will, he can keep these smaller niche docs, i.e. FLCL, Adult Swim, coming. I personally prefer these niche docs, but he has to play the game to get that paper :D

Id certainly say so. Along with paranoia agent this is one of my favorites. Of course these kind of animes are about deeper meaning, and artistic allusions, whereas dbz and pokemon are a lot closer to the surface. Not to mean those are shallow, they are just more about situations, rather than character arcs, and underlying meaning that applys to YOU.

Thanks you for this. I saw this when I was 8 (just turned 21) and I lived it then. Didn't quite understand it but watching it now I get why it had such an impact on me. Great video and thanks for alerting ppl who may not have heard of it before.

Im 35 and misssed the whole "anime boom" of the early 2000's. The few I have tried to watch are just nonsense. They are either screaming or crying at nothing for 80% of the episode. I have seen a few seen a few DbZ episodes that were cool and recently watched the series "Attack on Titan" on adult swim that I enjoyed. Can anyone point me in the direction of good anime to start off with, similar to that?

Cowboy Bebop, if you haven't seen it. That is one of the pinnacle anime shows that many anime of today have an impossible time grasping. Hit me up if you're interested in others.

+tobanga feufeu it doesnt HAVE to be action, just something thats animated well, has a good story and like I said, isnt filled with nonsensical crying and screaming at nothingness.

I mean that's not even up to debate, everyone would tell you Cowboy Bebop. Timeless classic, space, action with just as good animation and soundtrack like FLCL

I can't really agree with your observation that Japanese animation is primarily centered around serialization, because the vast majority (probably 97 % if I had to guess) of works don't even get a 2nd season let alone a long running serial.

I finished watching the show not too long ago and though I couldn't explain it, I just got it I just couldn't put into words. KaptainKristian explain FLCL felt like something was drilling into my head pouring out these feelings and thoughts about the show that i couldn't quite comprehend. Im only 16 but this show is important to me i think even more important than if i watched it at 12. These vids are always a joy to watch keep up the good work.

let me tell you something about FLCL... this was gifted too me as a 13 year old boy growing up in a frustrating and fucked up world. It honestly is soo deeply embedded in my mind as a boy and even as an adult it brings a tear too my eye... just remembering the feelings and hard time i was going thru at those times... even touching on subjects i personally are having problems as an adult now. any ways.. just subbed after watching the futurama then this. and im blowed away man. keep it up. cheers.

Easily one of the best channels on youtube and greatly unrecognized as such. Keep it up man the amount of effort and soul you put in these videos is very refreshing compared to the rest of the "youtube drama" that this site is devolving into. it's amazing how you are able to fully grasp the hidden concepts on different kinds of shows and explain them in an interesting and grasping way. Man i love your videos! FLCL is my favourite anime (as it is for the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, if anyone is interested) and although i never quite understood it and it totally deserves several watches in which i'm gonna invest my time when i can, i always loved it for it's uniqueness. One of the things that i always liked and caught my attention about it is that they kept the music going (which was a loud and messy rock) even during conversations or when nothing crazy was happening, and that is a very weird thing to see in any show or movie. Maybe that was to transmit a sense of reckleness of youth, or i'm probably just overanalizing it, but i think it is still worth mentioning when talking about the style of FLCL, it's like they never killed the momentum, they just kept it going for the whole episode, and it really added up to the style while not interfering with what the show was about, and combined with the animation, use of colour and physical humour, i think it is one of the best marriages of sound and image i've seen on a tv show at least.

Dude, another fantastic video expressing my thoughts exactly (though you do it much better). FLCL came to me right when I was 12 too and like you said, I didn't get it but I felt like it got me. Wasn't till a few years later that I re-watched and got a better understanding. Thanks for another great video.
Also the soundtrack is mad good

I remember watching this show back in 2001 or 2002, don't remember. I thought it was weird, but it definitely resonated with me. Later, in high school, I downloaded every episode off of limewire on my Dial up connection one night. Waiting hours for each download, and watching the episodes with my friends. We all loved the show, and it's affected me since. It's such a perfectly concise representation of the mind of a teenager, and the mess that your life is at that point.
Great video, and great topic. Too many of my current friends have no idea what the show is, and this would be a great introduction to the show for them.

It's my all time favorite anime that I always suggest to people but no one ever wants to watch. The music, the colors, the emotions, the words, the people, the adventure, the calm, the disturbance, the everything about it is just perfect to me. It's so wild, but it has such somber moments. Great video btw, I had to subscribe bc all of your videos are about media I love and I'm really enjoying your takes. ❤️
