Alpaca Male You referenced one piece of an extremely well put together video. Don't pretend like you could just as easily pull off his Rorschach style image fades, his panel stenciling, his color transition during the primary vs. secondary description, and I could go on and on about the technical details put into this video, but the truth is, it comes down to the amount of passion and research he puts into the topics. I actually learned something. And he did it in a fun and interesting way. That takes talent and it's obvious that his style of editing shows it.
Great video bubson. I read Watchmen in high school after seeing the trailer for the movie and I thought it was amazing (the book). So I gotta give credit to the movie for getting me interested, even though it was a pretty much a complete shitshow, spare some really well done scenes - like the intro fight with the comedian and Dr. Manhattan's transformation.
"An adaptation should never replace the source material." That's why I have mixed feelings on the Frankenstein films. They were important to the development of cinema, but they have totally replaced the image of the original novel in the public's eye. People think of the monster as Boris Karloff, not the intelligent but murderous character of the source material.
The same could be said of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Almost all adaptations have Jekyll as a scientist who accidentally cursed himself to becoming a big, horrible monster. In the book, Jekyll deliberately enjoyed transforming himself into Mr. Hyde, who was an intelligent, short but remorseless man. Jekyll liked becoming Hyde because it freed him of moral and social burdens, and his addiction eventually consumed him. As a result of modern adaptations, most people think of what was supposed to be a cautionary tale about human behavior into a less interesting version of the Incredible Hulk.
I disagree with that statement. You should always strive to make the best text possible, even if it means replacing the source. If this had resulted in the film being better than the graphic novel, then we would have gotten a great film.
farmzombie I don't completely agree. If you are going to adapt something into a movie and adapt it EXACTLY like the source material, then what's the point in making it? However, you can't change the source material to the point where the spirit of the story is gone. Basically, when making an adaptation you have the job of making something original and necessary (so that it doesn't feel like milking the og story) but at the same time knowing which elements of the source material don't need changing so that the essence of the story is still there.
@Jacob Wood How is the movie garbage? It's pretty good as a film. It's not As good as the graphic novel course but however it is still a very good deconstruction of comic book tropes in superhero cliches. It also does a better job at executing most of the scenes from the comic better then the original pages in my opinion.
@@ToshiUchiha7 read the comic years before the movie came out…comic was so good that the movie low key disappointed me because they changed things that I didn’t understand
I've noticed these kind of channels appearing/growing lately. Channel Criswell (cinema), Game Maker's Toolkit (games), RC Anime (anime, of course), or Historia Civilis (history and military battles), and some others. Most if not all of them are supported by patreon.
limelight productions which seems crazy since he is much older, shorter and slimmer than Rorschach. That’s what acting is supposed to be: changing your appearance by using your personality
Rorschach actually needed to be shorter and slimmer as a way of making his Kovacs persona as dim and unassuming as possible for the sake of the dramatic reveal. Good choice.
The movie Watchmen made me wanna read the comics. So, yeah, the movie did its job. And even though it gets its fair share of criticism from people who love the comics, I think it's one of the best comic book movies ever made... And that's saying a lot.
You are wrong. Sin City is the best adaptation. I notice people who have seen the movie (WATCHMEN) first before reading the comic rarely get the importance of the books ending and it homage to the comic storytelling method.
Kill2Hard101 Oh no... Plenty get it, it seems you're the one that doesn't. The Watchmen comic is a commentary on comics, the Watchmen movie is a commentary on movies.
@@jthodges4741 Yeah not really, point is it was a great adaptation into a different medium. You can't adapt symmetrical panel spreads to a screen that only shows one "panel". It was also by design the movie had lots of action and gore throughout and a rather bloodless climax (energy explosion), which was commentary on the action movie genre in general and audiences desires, not just comic movies. Comic movies weren't quite as prominent back then compared to now.
It was actually Fearful Symmetry, but I'm glad you pointed out this chapter. It's right in the middle of the graphic novel, and if you look at it closely, the entire chapter is completely symmetrical, from the panel layout to the motion of the characters action and even the colors. It's the most brilliant and overlooked thing ever done in comics. If you have the comic, I'd recommend going back and finding the exact middle of the book, then turning each page forward and backward to the beginning and end of the chapter (all about symmetry), and just be blown away by the genius of it.
@kaptainkristian Big fan. Your editing is incredible. Question -- How do you obtain the pages of comics for your editing? I want to edit essays on comics, but I'm not sure how to find high resolution comics for the video. Would love some advice! Keep doing what you're doing. Thanks.
I love the movie, and I love the book. Both to death. But I never expect or want a comicbook movie to be a DIRECT adaptation. I appreciate the changes Zack made, and I visit both of these works of art on a regular basis. I cant say which I think is better because they are two different mediums, but I certainly dont think the movie is a step down from the book, and definitely dont think Zack missed the point of it at all. The movie and the book are both polarizing, even while being cult classics. Its a story simply not for everyone, but I love that its one for me.
The ending of the movie irrevocably ruins the essence of the WATCHMEN story. The graphic novel ending is about PEOPLE dying - notice how every single physical structure is in tact. The movie forgets this detail completely and goes with nukes. It makes no sense.
Thing is, I never really understood why people called Watchmen "unadaptable", I thought it was pretty straightforward. Of course, that would mean they'd have to cut out a lot of elements, but I thought it could be done and Zach Snyder proved it. But then after watching this video, this guy has really opened up my eyes. It now DOES make sense why they chose the 9 panel comic layout, and why the colours were chosen, and many other things. Great video.
I love avatar! That being said, it seems kaptainkristian tend to look at works of fiction that were genre defining or changed the game. While Avatar is a great show, I don't think it really changed much and I doubt he will be doing a video on it. Though I would watch it if he did make it
If it were me, I just talked about what made the first three seasons good and then talk about why the movie is a shit stain in comparison and how Korra is good *but not as good as Aang's story*
I think that comic as an art is underrated . Comic must be greater than a film if is well done because is more intimate experience. You can watch a film with your friend. But when you are watching and reading a comic book, you are alone and you are more catapulted in the world of images 'cause you have all the time to read and think and see the details. In a film you do not have that "space" in which you can think about and the entire scene could be lost, passing fast away. In every comic you make the time , the reader is in some way a part of the "direction". But in the fast internet era everything is lost in a blink of an eye. No time to think about it, that's what is the real "mainstream": fashion without thinking. That's why I love comics.
Has kaptainkristian ever said who he is on his twitter account or something? I'm just completely perplexed by this channel and how it seemed to pop out of nowhere and keeps producing one amazing video after another.
+Mello Milan he did an interview with theverge from where I pulled this from, "KaptainKristian is Kristian Williams, a former film student who dropped out of film school when he "realized everything they were teaching was available online." He took to video blogging after being frustrated by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this spring..."
Word of caution. The graphic novel has to be read slowly and carefully. It is absolutely chock-full of tiny details, and they all mean something. It is meticulously designed. I've read it 5 or 6 times, and I catch something new on every re-reading.
Great video. I'd be lying if I didn't say I love the film regardless. Not only do I find it to be a great film, perfect to my tastes, but I owe a lot to it. Were it not for the film Watchmen, I would never have read the comics - and I mean any comics, because of this film I went out and I got every comic I could, just never considered them as something I needed to try til I saw this film.
Snyder's Watchman is just okay, it doesn't have the subtlety and grandeur of the Graphic Novel, but no true adaption should shoot it word for word and scene for scene. The whole point of adaption is the adapt to a new medium and in this case it's film. Though I do admit I did like the whole Nite Owl beating the shit out of Ozymandias scene since that's what I wanted to happen after Rorsach died in the comics... the asshole who caused it to happen to get a smackdown. Though it's better in the comics with just Ozy asking Dr Manhattan if he did the right thing and the good doctor telling him nothing ends.
I really loved watchmen movie, how the visual novel was a meta narrative tackling and focusing on things which are usually not cared about,Snyder creates a meta fiction where he tackles the usual norms of superhero movies,it was interesting,if you can't adapt the source, adapt the idea behind it and make it unique
Snyders movie also doesnt respect the build up at all. We never get a complete origin for Rorschach for example but the opening titles show young Kovacks before you as the viewer are suppose to even know Kovacks is Rorschach. He also shows Veidts plan in the first 10 minutes of the movie..revealing KARNAK before you are suppose to know it exists. Its one big spoiler!
How do you propose to put all those issues in one movie? I found watchmen very good and a fresh take on film making.(never read watchmen) I read the first few pages of watchmen and I like how detailed the first night owl was with his life, but you can't, you just can't put that in a 2 hour / 3 hour movie. He took the concept and put it in there and I loved it. Loved how the criminal was so close to them and how theatrical it all seemed.
I'm sorry, I read how his(Gilliam) movie would've turned out. He wanted Dr. Manhattan to turn back time and stop himself from being created and then have the characters turn into comicbook characters? to what end? Snyder's ending was both meaningful and beautiful. His execution unique and powerful. He's in a very unique position as well. His art is very divisive, normally people shouldn't like these kind of art in the first place and over time develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of them. The more I think about his films the more I understood why the divisiveness. His style is both generic and unique where most "unique" films focus on depth and the meaning of it's art, the more generic films focus on spectacle. Which is exactly how Snyder directs his films, both with substance and actual entertainment. A good mix of both, very unique. Unlike Nolan who can't seem to keep a good balance of both, but rather have very interesting stories to tell. Snyder knows how to incorporate beauty with meaning. In short, the myth that Snyder is all visual no substance is a lie. Any person with a brain knows this to be true. EVERY Snyder movie has substance, he's just so good with making his art look good that people take the meaning for granted. It's just that undeniable that he makes beautiful films. He's the perfect director for watchmen, just look at how he sequences it. Even in MoS his sequencing is awesomely unique. It's undeniable he is a true artist.
MrSquifler "Can't make a meaningful film" Now that's just spite. So you're actually staking your intelligence on that? There's no meaning behind how his Watchmen changed the ending? How the violence is so vulgar in the early stages of the film and then how the climax was so ironically abrupt? How MoS's sequencing is pure art where his flashbacks are in conjunction to certain events? How Krypton's fate foreshadows earth's? And how it is used to make across the point of traditionalism and radicalism? Please explain.
I love the work channels like yours and The Nerd Writer do. Such a huge level of respect for the time and effort you put into these videos and it really shows. They're all amazing.
This was the most respectful analysis of the film and the concept of adaptation that I have viewed on this website. That is something I can always admire in a TH-camr like yourself. Kudos. Most try to ascribe one as being inferior to the other or trying to reach a middle of the road compromise that seems resigned. You gave more consideration to both mediums.
Thank you for bringing up the panel arrangements. Watchmen is constantly lauded for its writing (which it very much deserves), but I don't hear as much praise for the visual composition of the art, which is just as complex and important -- if not more so. Each panel frames a moment in a purposeful way that carries dense symbolic meaning and it's this that keeps me coming back and discovering new connections with every read.
First I want to say that I watched the movie first... and it is really good. I read the comic later... and it is significantly better. Secondly I completely disagree with "an adaptation should only be seen as supplementary." I think an adaptation should stand on it's own and needs to make changes to adapt to a new medium or to add new or different ideas. Look at Disney adaptations.
binge watched Netflix shows before but this is the first time that I binge-watch a TH-cam channel from oldest to newest and is Awesome. Keep up the great work !
I bought and read Watchmen because of this video, last year. It was incredible. So many references I now understand, and it's clear how much of it casually seeped into public psyche. I feel like I need to read it again to truly appreciate it though.
BUMI All other comic book movies are mainstream garbage, cookie cutter bullshit, designed to rake in as much cash and views from the masses as possible. So its a no wonder you like most comic book movies lmfao.
Yeah I felt the movie ending made way more sense, would they really be able to figure Jon was the cause of the creature coming from another dimension? It was surprising and awesome but the explosions make better sense, every survivor would recognize what, who, done it. This movie is so under-appreciated. I read the graphic novel just before it came out and the movie blew me away.
***** And that was a stupider idea than the one from the movie. Uniting the world against a known threat is easier and makes more sense, than inventing a new fake one that no one has ever seen before. The movie just did this particular bit better than the comic. Its not a personal attack against anyone, it just fits the world better.
To some extend, I must respectfully disagree. I never liked how every movie adaptation is judged in categorys of "that is not, how it is in the book, or comic, or whatever". Those are just different mediums, having different strengths and rules. You are absolutely right, that a comic has a way of telling a story, that is way different of the the way, a movie can. But that way is not by default better or worse. It is just different. So it just makes sense for a movie to step away from the source material at some points, to tell a story that does work on film. And for that reason I don´t think it makes sense to compare a comic/book with a film. The question should be "does the movie work as a film?" and "does the comic work as a comic?"
David Schuster The plot came up short with Zack Snyder's adaptation and he missed a few key details and some symholism that was presented in the novel. Also the mastermind behind the whole plot in the story was, in a way, very fatherly and loving and wise. In contrast, Ozzy in the movie looked like he would stab the heroes in the back at any given moment.
Yeah, things is watchmen's directing is terrible. It manages to essentially copy paste the plot and yet be so tone deaf in its aesthetic that it misses the point of the original entirely, while owing every single quality it possesses to it. That's just a bad adaptation all around. It' not different enough for the ideas change, and it's not well made as far as portraying them goes
They made the vigilantes seem like they had superpowers. That fundamentally changes the source material in a way that warps the message. Different medium or not you shouldn’t change a central tenant of the property for no good reason. Coulda done those fight scenes without the over the top flare
Snyders Adaptation of Watchmen is a "superhero movie" about Superhero movies. it shows this extreme violence that was becoming popular and mainstream at the time and it asks us "do we really like this" we see him "parody" and give those inside jokes to show how we look at cape films. snyder uses the same concept moore did with the "graphic novel and how its laid out" idea and adapts that to the film.
I would agree if his recent films didn’t show his obsession with teen angsty melodrama and over the top violence purely for the spectacle while trying to impose some nonsensical “deep meaning” to it.
I keep imagining what a good and proper film adaptation of Watchmen would even look like? Who would direct it? Who would handle the cinematography? Who would be casted as whom? What changes would this adaptation feel needs to be made? Will it have the inverse politics like Snyder's did? What would even be the appropriate runtime? Should it expand across more than one film? Will a faithful adaptation even happen in my Moore's lifetime? Will it happen in mine? Will it ever? But the most important question I find myself asking is - Where can I get my hands on this near perfect graphic novel and read it again? Great video dude.
I have now watched every video on this channel. The quality is amazing and consistent with the level of thought I never thought a video essay on youtube could have. Keep up the good work! Just don't ever rush yourself.
Total opposite for me. I did not care about the book or the characters until I saw the movie. Rorschach's death blew my mind. The deconstruction of the superhero blew my mind. And nope, I didnt even know this world existed until the movie. I respect both, but I own the blu-ray and watch it at least once a year. Cinema and comic book lore merging together allowing me to have sensory feast consisting of larger than life characters playing out a story in live action! That's all a dude like me needs. And I'm good. I appreciate getting what I would've never dreamed I would get. That's my opinion. Thanks for reading.
Ahksquiat Just watched and like a lot. I've seen many of the differences (cinefix) and prefer the movies ending and the final death scene. I'll stick to just the movie and I'm fine with that. The characters are still flawed and even though there aren't many great details, if you look you'll how awfully damaged they are.
I can't express how much I love your channel. I read Watchmen for the first time, and thanks to you, you have completely changed my view toward comics and superheroes as an art form. Keep up the brilliant work as always :)
Such a great channel, thanks ro Philip Defranco for sharing your link! I love film review channels and seeing different approaches to them and you are amazing, and kudos to your editing it's so good! Can't wait for more videos 😊
I saw that he had trouble with it before so he must of unlisted it for the time being I just happened to fine it when I googled it and one of the sites I went to talking about the video had it linked still.
Great video! I agree with almost everything, 2 issues I have. 1) there is blood and gore in huge detail hanging off the ceiling in the comic when Dr. Manhattan vaporizes then men in the restaurant so I'm not sure Snyder's violence was overdone in respect to the comic. 2) the suit Ozy wears in the film is in fact a parody of Batman's suit, you're right on that but costumes in the comic were often meant as parodies of comic book costumes. So isn't the films version a parody of comic book film costumes perfect for a film adaptation? I think al lot of the violence and costumes are meant as film version parodies the way the comic was a parody of comics. What do you think?
I also think this as well. And the change from an interdimensional monster to Doc Manhattan's simulated explosion, makes it simpler in a better way. A way which is more effective.
Your videos are like an amazing essay, not a crappy high school procrastination filled essay but a 2 years in the making Masters degree thesis essay, your videos are so well made and captivating it's insane!
my god i love this essay form of vlog, i cant get enough of nerwrighter, vox, film/game theorist, extra history (although they may be a step above, they add quite a bit with their animation, particularly love extra history). even mothers basement's over analyzing OPs is just an amazing way to present your work. and you are doing it amazingly!!! every subject you present i can feel the grandiose weight you are trying to portray! you are right up there with the nerdwriter for me man, keep this coming!!
I passed over it because everyone insisted I had to read it. Fuck everyone. Now I know I missed something really special, but I can deal. By the way, still waiting for film adaptations of Monster Hunters, Scary Tales, and other lesser known Charlton greats.
***** It's an old documentary on the hardships faced by the impoverished massess. You can try checking out Samsara, a much more recent docu with a lot of striking visuals.
Two videos in and I'm LOVING this channel. Started on Godzilla after a recommendation from a friend. Love the detail. Editing. I don't even know half the terms for what you're doing, but I see it and I really enjoy it. Great work kaptainkristian!
I remember seeing the trailer for watchmen in theaters. I clearly remember the trailer stating "the most celebrated graphic novel of all time" and my friends and I laughed, saying "how can it be the most celebrated if none of us have ever even heard of it!?" We were around 18 at the time. I went to see the movie in theaters and absolutely loved it. I read the comic in a single sitting a few days later. If it wasn't for the movie, I would have never known about Watchmen. I clearly appreciate it as a masterpiece now. Mind you, I wasn't a huge comic book nerd or anything but I'm half japanese and have been reading manga all my life and have been to my fair share of comic book shops. edit: forgot to make my point, the film may be flawed from those that loved the comic from before. but it absolutely did a terrific job of reintroducing the watchmen to a new more desensitized generation and getting people like me to seek it out. Spoilers: This is an unpopular opinion but I prefer the ending of the movie over the comic. It made more sense to me, and I thought the story flowed a lot better that ozymandias would use doctor manhattan's tech and energy to destroy NY (and other major cities) rather than introduce extradimensional beings at the very end of the comic (only in NY if I remember correctly). It really threw me off when I saw that squid monster at the end of the comic. It felt like it came out of no where rather than seeing John constantly working on the machine that was used in the climax of the movie. It also made more sense to me that doctor manhattan could no longer stay on earth because of what adrian did in the film rather than just not wanting to be on earth anymore. Still love the comic as a separate thing from the movie though. Just my two cents as a person that was introduced via the movie rather than the graphic novel.
I absolutely adore the movie AND the book. I feel like they each get something right the other one wasn't able to, one not really bring objectively better than the other
No The Dark Knight and Logan and Captain America The Winter Soldier and Civil War and The Avengers are the greatest superhero movies ever made not this insult to a great comic
Captain Jakemerica All of those movies have conventional story structures and plot holes. Predictables and not really thought provoking. Not saying that makes them bad but this movie was something else. An amazing feast of deep story, visuals, sound and music. A good adaptation. Better probably than what most could have done in a movie.
Watchmen isn't a good adaptation Watchmen is unadaptable like what Alan Moore said the comic is and will always be superior and the movie didn't have a deep story like all Hack Synder movies it had a complete clusterfuck of a plot I can agree on the other things but the visuals were really the only great thing about it
Nah, it is a good adaptation. It is adaptable, there's the proof and more now that they are making the series. If you think it didn't have a deeper story and a complicated plot, then how do you even read and understood the comic? And no, not just visuals. The acting, the editting, the rhythm, the soundtrack, the sound design, the costumes, the cast, the sound mixing, the sets, etc. were also great.
Had to come back and re-watch this cause opf the show. Great work, man. I hope in the recent years, these videos have paid off for you cause your editing/story telling is top notch.
I just discovered your channel and it is already one of my favorite relatively smaller channels, can't wait to see what comes next I'll be looking forward to it
Okay, I'm not the biggest Snyder fan, but after watching BvS twice and MoS twice I have respect for him. Regardless of the intent of this video, if there was any, I have somewhat more respect for him in recommending the original comic to people who watched his film. It wasn't a perfect adaptation, but then again, could it be filmed? This video seems content to prod him for missing out on colour schemes, but it's because of him a generation of film-goers got to see a relatively close adaptation of Watchmen. Again, isn't the whole point of this video that the film was actually unfilmable? Considering that, I think Snyder is at least reverential of the source material which means he at least tried. To be quite frank, the guy at 6:05 reveals that he's simply ashamed that Snyder attempted a decent adaptation of an unfilmable work and made a good film in the process. An adaptation should ALWAYS adapt the original to the medium in which it's applied, which is why this one works so well. 20-30 years from now, this will be seen as one of the best 5 comic adaptations ever made. Period.
A few things: 1.- It didn't introduce the comic to that many people. The movie was a financial failure. 2.- It won't be remember the way you think it will. The people who think this movie is "DABEST EVAR!!1!" are a very vocal minority.
A few other things: 1. -When the trailer for Watchmen was first released it sparked so much interest that the graphic novels became bestsellers more than twenty years after their publication. 2.-It grossed over its budget (you have to take the international box office total into account) and that is just its theatrical release, we are not including merchandise, dvd's, and other sources of revenue for films. 3.-Box office revenue is not necessarily linked to a film's legacy. Blade Runner bombed when it first came out, now it is a cult classic and studied. The Transformer movies keep on getting made because they keep on making money, that does not mean that people will remember them 20-30 years from now or that they will have a cultural impact at all.
I don't really think people understood what Snyder was going for. He was making a comic book movie about comic book movies. Just like how the comic was a comic about comics.
THIS^^^^^^ It wouldnt have been in the spirit of the original work to make a comicbook movie about comicbooks. Much like WATCHMEN (the graphic novel) isnt a comicbook about comicbook films. Thats why it is called an adaptation
I'm always gonna love Watchmen (film) soley because of Rorschach. Talk about perfect casting. Can't see/hear anyone else. The moment he loses control and butchers that creep felt real (and SUPER satisfying)! Everything with him was outstanding. Movie gets a lot of (valid) shit, but Snyder did some good. I instantly felt the history of partnership between Rorschach and NightOwl II
Why not talk about the ending, which is the biggest difference between the two and the one aspect that most fans would agree it was better handled in the movie than in the book? Or the Tales of the Black Freighter and Under the Hood supplementary mini-movies? Or how, even with all the small changes the movie made, it's still one of the most, if not the most faithful adaptation of any source material ever made? Oh right, it's because you like to skew your opinions against Snyder.
The thing that irked me about the movie's ending is this: why would framing Dr Manhatten cause world peace when since he was the US' ultimate weapon it might humiliate the US further. In fact it might have given the Soviets an excuse to call out the US out even more and blame them for the destruction.
1.- No one has ever said they prefer the movie ending. It's one of the most criticized aspects of the movie. 2.- It's not the most faithful adaptation of anything, watch more shit. Scott Pilgrim alone is more faithful than this wreck.
Unshaved Malevolence Your hate for Snyder becomes more apparent with every sentence you make. 1. You are very disconnected with the world because a lot of movie sites, comic book sites and people in general said they prefer the movie ending. The op said he prefers the ending of the movie so thats already one person who likes it. 2. In your opinion it's not the most faithful adaptation, in hus and others it is.
I'd like to take a moment here to say that I really appreciate your videos! They make me appreciate the things you talk about much more then I used to. Please keep on doing what you're doing!! You are AWESOME
Wow this was a truly amazing video. You've somehow managed to take all those strange thoughts that I've considered when comparing the different medias to the Graphic novel and expand upon it exponentially. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say how amazing a movie is put refuse to read the source material and see /feel more than what can be filmed. Rarely can I watch a video similar to this and agree with the entire thing, but you Sir are my exception. Well done, you've done Watchmen fans proud.
Do you realize that SO MANY good films are adaptations? And far more than just "supplements" to often inferior original works? Great video, but that point is just...nah.
@@jthodges4741 The movie glorifies violence where the book paints it in a negative light. The movie treats the heroes like super powered gods among men while the book treats them like normal people with mental illnesses.
@@mphylo2296 I think you might missed the point. As visually similar as the book and film are, watchmen the movie tries to do the same thing for movies that watchmen did for comics (specifically action/superhero movies of the time). People at the time were fans of the glorified violence and big explosions? It made the violance overbearing and the explosion dismal and punished a standard viewer for wanting those things. This can be seen in many things, from the visuals, costume design, and some of the dialogue that was changed. Those things were done in order to translate the thesis of the book into the medium of film. Also, how did you see that the movie painted any heroes besides the minutemen and dr. manhattan, which the book also portrayed as roles models and gods, as gods among men? I watched the film and saw that these were very, very damaged people
I still say the whole "It would take thirty minutes to explain the squid" thing is garbage. Here, I'll do it in a very quick line of dialogue. Oz: Did you know my pet is a genetic hybrid? My company put a lot of stock into making that a reality. So when I stupid Manhattan's powers to fix the energy crisis, I made sure to fold that into my other work. A little reconfiguring and I managed to cross several undersea species into one giant new creature, alongside giving it the ability to teleport. Of course, the strain of the teleportation will kill it, but the psychic backlash of its death cry will essentially kill millions of people in close proximity. Unfortunate, but neccessary. There, done. You tie it back to Manhattan, so that foreshadowing from before isn't wasted and you bring the tiger thing we all saw and bam! You have the squid and the stupidity of America and Russia thinking they can survive against Dr. Manhattan is done away with. Because we can probably fight aliens, but Dr Manhattan? The fuck are they gonna do?
They were not trying to fight Dr. Manhattan you idiot, he was used as a fake totalitarian like figurehead in the movie. Not mention how utterly stupid the squid was in the novel, completely ruined it for me.
Read it in middle school. Absolutely loved it, and totally got it. My mom kept on telling me to watch the movie and when I finally did, I was disappointed. But it just made me love the comics even more.
The definition of adaptation is changing it to be your own thing, Snyder has done this exactly. I love both the graphic novel and the movie, the movie has more violence to make us feel uneasy and feel remorse for the characters, it's not trying to glorify it. By the way, this video is great! For a small channel, you're awesome! Keep it up!

Read the comic of V for Vendetta.
huh
Holy shit dunkey's here... play it cool, play it cool... I love you dunks
+Daniel Blanco I already shat my pants
Complete shitshow is an accurate description of every Snyder movie
"An adaptation should never replace the source material." That's why I have mixed feelings on the Frankenstein films. They were important to the development of cinema, but they have totally replaced the image of the original novel in the public's eye. People think of the monster as Boris Karloff, not the intelligent but murderous character of the source material.
So, it sounds like the monster in "Penny Dreadful" was very close to the literary character.
+Martin T. Considering the title of the show is literary, they better have been faithful!
Watchmen is one of the best examples of near-perfect writing that I have ever seen
SAdly people were not ready for it. It was way too advanced.
@Jacob Wood How is the movie garbage? It's pretty good as a film. It's not As good as the graphic novel course but however it is still a very good deconstruction of comic book tropes in superhero cliches. It also does a better job at executing most of the scenes from the comic better then the original pages in my opinion.

The comic is better

Damn dude, you just made me want to read Watchmen.
THANK YOU FOR EXISTING.
It's a fantastic read, too.
you should, it's absolutely incredible!!
You should have done it before you knew the major plotpoints. It will still be good though.
One of the first and only instances of a channel coming out of nowhere and totally amazing everyone good video, good channel, good luck.
Every Frame A Painting also came out of nowhere and surprised everyone. You should check it out if you haven't yet.
What about the Hydraulic Press channel, can't get more educational than that....

And that's saying a lot.
nekezajebancije it's definitely up there with the likes of The Dark Knight and Logan.
@@SA80TAGE comic book movies, to be more accurate

Find someone who loves you as passionately as Alan Moore hates adaptations of his work 🤗
@kaptainkristian Big fan.
Its a story simply not for everyone, but I love that its one for me.
agree completely.
Well said
This guy gets it 👌🏻
The ending of the movie irrevocably ruins the essence of the WATCHMEN story. The graphic novel ending is about PEOPLE dying - notice how every single physical structure is in tact. The movie forgets this detail completely and goes with nukes. It makes no sense.
Dude really? You wanted Aliens over a more realistic ending? MAKES NO SENSE? Really Aliens dude? Gtfo.

Nice song choice!
Yours and Every Frame a Painting's uploads always make me feel like it's christmas

I love avatar! That being said, it seems kaptainkristian tend to look at works of fiction that were genre defining or changed the game. While Avatar is a great show, I don't think it really changed much and I doubt he will be doing a video on it.
Though I would watch it if he did make it
Do you know a couple? Would love to watch
If it were me, I just talked about what made the first three seasons good and then talk about why the movie is a shit stain in comparison and how Korra is good *but not as good as Aang's story*
Every time, so well done. Fantastic!
Your editing skills are amazing, great work! Looking forward for the next episode
I absolutely love your stuff. Your attention to detail and ability to see beyond what the story is telling the audience is incredible.

Great editing, great commentary, and a clear message. How do you only have around 165,000 subscribers? It's insanity!
For me, Watchmen is one of the best movies I've ever seen, so hearing that the comic is a lot better makes me want to read it. Thank you!
If you loved the movie then ABSOLUTELY read the comics
Much as everyone will probably post, definitely go read the comic. The story isn't 100% the same, but it is fantastic.
Word of caution. The graphic novel has to be read slowly and carefully. It is absolutely chock-full of tiny details, and they all mean something. It is meticulously designed. I've read it 5 or 6 times, and I catch something new on every re-reading.
***** This.
It is top 10 maybe top 5 for me. Seen it countless times.. All 3 hours of it.
^^^
Snyder's Watchman is just okay, it doesn't have the subtlety and grandeur of the Graphic Novel, but no true adaption should shoot it word for word and scene for scene. The whole point of adaption is the adapt to a new medium and in this case it's film.
Though I do admit I did like the whole Nite Owl beating the shit out of Ozymandias scene since that's what I wanted to happen after Rorsach died in the comics... the asshole who caused it to happen to get a smackdown. Though it's better in the comics with just Ozy asking Dr Manhattan if he did the right thing and the good doctor telling him nothing ends.
kek
I found watchmen very good and a fresh take on film making.(never read watchmen)
I read the first few pages of watchmen and I like how detailed the first night owl was with his life, but you can't, you just can't put that in a 2 hour / 3 hour movie.
He took the concept and put it in there and I loved it. Loved how the criminal was so close to them and how theatrical it all seemed.
I like how your video is created back in 2016 but still hold's up to this day and great video man :]
Just discovered you and now binge watching all your stuff....great videos and amazing content!
Even though it's not perfect, I think it's the best adaptation we could ever get.
What it did to the ending was unforgivable though
The best adaptation is the first SIN CITY movie imo. WATCHMEN the movie just distracts from what it is suppose to be.
What was it supposed to be kill2?
MrSquifler
"Can't make a meaningful film" Now that's just spite.
I love your videos man makes my day everytime I see a new one
Dropped a like before I even watched, just know it's going to be good
I love the work channels like yours and The Nerd Writer do.
I love Zack Snyder and the movie trailer did get me to read the graphic novel. I think that both the graphic novel and the film are great.
Agreed
First I want to say that I watched the movie first... and it is really good. I read the comic later... and it is significantly better.
Secondly I completely disagree with "an adaptation should only be seen as supplementary." I think an adaptation should stand on it's own and needs to make changes to adapt to a new medium or to add new or different ideas. Look at Disney adaptations.
I just happened to stumble on this video by chance but these are some of the best video essays on youtube. Bravo, sir. Bravo
binge watched Netflix shows before but this is the first time that I binge-watch a TH-cam channel from oldest to newest and is Awesome. Keep up the great work !
I bought and read Watchmen because of this video, last year.
It was incredible.
So many references I now understand, and it's clear how much of it casually seeped into public psyche.
I feel like I need to read it again to truly appreciate it though.

+BUMI Yeah. He must be a sad little man because he has a different opinion than you. Get the fuck out of here.
KillJoy different opinion than me and, like, the rest of the population
BUMI All other comic book movies are mainstream garbage, cookie cutter bullshit, designed to rake in as much cash and views from the masses as possible.
So its a no wonder you like most comic book movies lmfao.
BUMI Yeah. He must be a sad little man for having a different opinion than most people. Seriously, shut the fuck up, you entitled brat.
I still prefer the graphic novel, but I liked the movie ending more.
I agree completely. I think there's is actually much that the movie just does better.
But there were things that the movie did not do so well.
It is true, but I think it's the only thing the film does better than the comic.
This is one of the greatest channels on TH-cam! I honestly wait in anticipation for kaptainkristrian videos.
I keep rewatching because the editing is so good. The video is just satisfying to watch
The source material doesn't matter if the director has a vision
Just discovered your channel and love it. Thanks for the content!
Your content is always top quality, congrats :)
The film dumbs down some of the things in the comic. Turns them to cringey or unnecessary.
Lol someone missed the point. "unnecessary"
the film tells a story of how much man is capable of and then comes god. That's all you need to know.
The movie is nowhere near the comics
Oh man!! I don't know anything about this!!!! Lol excited
Read watchmen, trust me its an amazing book !
Watch the movie first. Then read the book. That way you will enjoy both.
Agreed. This is the route I went, as I'm not too big into graphic novels/comic books.

+Chris Amos if you search "Kaptain Kristian you can find a Playlist with the Calvin and hobbies video in it.
What do you think?
even with all its fauls, the movie was still pretty good
I also think this as well. And the change from an interdimensional monster to Doc Manhattan's simulated explosion, makes it simpler in a better way. A way which is more effective.
It really wasn't.

I bet his next video will have a green thumbnail.
We all know Berkel edited this lol :P
I'm wearing an LTT shirt as I'm watching this vid.
you called it
Your editing and deconstruction of scenes are phenomenal. Keep up the great work.
Dude. The editing in this is unbelievable. Immediate sub.
the movie made me want to read the graphic novel
I absolutely adore the movie AND the book. I feel like they each get something right the other one wasn't able to, one not really bring objectively better than the other
I loved the Watchmen movie, yall keep hating. I think it's the greatest superhero movie ever made.
No it's going to fail Damon Lindelof doesnt' have a good record of adapting series look at what he's done with Lost and Star Trek Into Darkness
Had to come back and re-watch this cause opf the show. Great work, man. I hope in the recent years, these videos have paid off for you cause your editing/story telling is top notch.
I just discovered your channel and it is already one of my favorite relatively smaller channels, can't wait to see what comes next I'll be looking forward to it
An animated series would've been better for Watchmen, but that's a different discussion.
Period.
A few things:
1.- It didn't introduce the comic to that many people. The movie was a financial failure.
2.- It won't be remember the way you think it will. The people who think this movie is "DABEST EVAR!!1!" are a very vocal minority.
A few other things:
THIS^^^^^^
It wouldnt have been in the spirit of the original work to make a comicbook movie about comicbooks. Much like WATCHMEN (the graphic novel) isnt a comicbook about comicbook films.
Thats why it is called an adaptation
lmao
I'm always gonna love Watchmen (film) soley because of Rorschach. Talk about perfect casting. Can't see/hear anyone else. The moment he loses control and butchers that creep felt real (and SUPER satisfying)! Everything with him was outstanding. Movie gets a lot of (valid) shit, but Snyder did some good. I instantly felt the history of partnership between Rorschach and NightOwl II
you are one of the best editors I have seen around youtube in a long time. Keep up the good work.

What's the song in the ending?
Description.
Edit: Alright.
+Laughmore InDaHouse no it's not in the description. That's the song in the video part, not the outro.
you and me by Tyler the Creator
+Laughmore InDaHouse Its not there.
Tyler, the Creator - Hey You
Why not talk about the ending, which is the biggest difference between the two and the one aspect that most fans would agree it was better handled in the movie than in the book? Or the Tales of the Black Freighter and Under the Hood supplementary mini-movies? Or how, even with all the small changes the movie made, it's still one of the most, if not the most faithful adaptation of any source material ever made? Oh right, it's because you like to skew your opinions against Snyder.
I've never heard a single person say they preferred the movie ending.
@@Melkac weird, I ever heard the good things about change.
But not all adaptations are based on the greatest.
Most adaptations echo the core themes of their source material. Watchmen contradicts them.
@@mphylo2296 how so?
I watched the film and saw that these were very, very damaged people
The interview with Zack Snyder that starts at 6:13, can anyone help me out with where that is from?
Why do you want to know? He's a hack
You and nerdwriter are my favorite people in TH-cam at the moment. Never stop making these videos
Make a video about Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I don't know why, I just want to hear your analysis.
Keep it up!
Who else is here after Episode 5 of HBO's Watchmen?
How is the series? I've been meaning to give it a watch
@Memento Mori yea.. I've heard a couple things as of then. I'll stick to the movie and book
@@jthodges4741 It's good
@@jthodges4741 It's really good. It has so many references and nods to the original source material. The worldbuilding is stellar and the writing is great too.
