      This is a very modern phenominon whereas in the past you had to be an adult or die, increasingly adults remain children and seek other extraparental sources of support. Essentially remaining children forever.

    FLCL is a lot like Bebop in that it really ages well with the viewer. Except instead of Bebop's case - where the show is ultimately about adults and adult problems that can' fully be understood by a younger viewer - FLCL so accurately portrays the confusion of adolescence that you can't objectively assess it's message as a kid. Leading to mistaken ideas like Amuro being an actual badass instead of a literal joke character, or Mamimi being irrational instead of a frighteningly on point portrayal of the effects of bullying, parental abuse/neglect, and depression on a young teenager.
    Great video Digi, Mamimi is adorable and deserves more love.

      Serial Experiments Lain does make sense if you read Lawrence Eng's site and pay attention. I'm with Shake there - I've seen FLCL several times and this is the single most concise and coherent explanation of all the insanity I've heard. I literally never got that Haruko being in love with Atomsk could well be because of Amarao simply being such an insecure dweeb. Then again...the most recent episode of FLCL Progressive could imply that there is some truth to that and that's kinda sad.

    It took me forever to realize this, but I think Mamimi was homeless and possibly a runaway. Not only the scene with the day old bread, but there's also a scene where Naota is hanging out with his friends and they're watching Mamimi in the river, clearly wringing out her skirt, and possibly washing her only set of clothes. It's weird that she is also truant and wearing a school uniform signifying a reluctance to go home and get a change of clothes due to family issues. There's also the apparent being mostly seen under a bridge. In regards to her cell phone, there are ways for homeless to charge devices like at a library.

    FLCL is such a fun show to rewatch over and over just to discover what kind of metaphors and allegories the writers used to get the themes and points across (the water gun is one prominent example) and to realize, through all its surface level weirdness, how real and human of a story it is about growing up.
    It honestly baffles me why this anime doesn't get brought up more in the art of subtle storytelling compared to say Catcher in the Rye.

    The bit about Mami learning that relying on the weak *or* the strong for support is dangerous because they have minds of their own and will move from under you made me think of Utena, and Akio's relationship with Anthy and his other victims. He'd have done well to learn that lesson, but, by the time his support up and left him, it was already too late.

Watching videos like this on TH-cam really validates the younger self that still exists within me. For years as a kid I had no idea why I was so obsessed with this anime and I didn’t know anyone else who liked it. It was lonely and frustrating not being able to share the passion I had for this show with anyone else. It spoke to me in a way that I could only make sense of years and years later. I feel that her scenes provoke the most emotion; bittersweet feelings. I was intrigued by FLCL from the start, but the exact moment that I fell in love with it, was when Canti took off with the birds into the sky from the rooftop of the burned-down school, from Mamimi's perspective; with the wind blowing, the clouds parting, and "Hybrid Rainbow" by the Pillows in the background.

    What I enjoy most about this series is not how I can rationalize what x or y character needs, or what their "arc" is; It's a show about energy, atmosphere, inexplicable events, badass music, jaw-dropping animation, amazing acting and a sense of childhood wonder and emotion. It's an engrossing aesthetic experience...and it absolutely does not require rationalizations or explanations to fully, deeply savor it. Sure, it might be about growing up. It might also be about what it feels like to live in a claustrophobic, vanilla little town. It might also be about losing proximity to an older sibling. It could be a show about falling in love, meeting someone who seems to have a purpose when you feel purposeless. It could be about all of these things. But none of these fully describe the feeling you get when you watch this show. The parallel universe it creates through color, sound, motion and downright badass design. Enjoy this show like you enjoy a passion fruit smoothie. No thoughts required (sure, they are there if you want them.)

    ivr seen FLCL more times than I can count but when you explained all those plot details and I had actually very little idea that any of that was actually part of the plot, yet FLCL is still probably my favorite anime of all time. nice video, Digi.

    Imma keep it a buck. When I was younger and watched this anime I didn't understand a lick of what was happening but I enjoyed the ride. Watched it a couple more time when I was older and could only piece a bit of it together. And today what you did in the 1st 5 mins of breaking down the show and all its characters I now fully understand it. Thanks.

    It's always great to see the plot summarized with such clarity, kudos!
    I only ever started to understand Mamimi's character arc on the fourth, maybe fifth re-watch. But it became more clear for the subsequent 10-11 times I binged the whole show.

  • @lucelovelace2442

    I love this video man! I really enjoyed it! Mamimi is my favourite character too as her story really spoke to me! The way I see it is that Mamimi surrounds herself with people more lost and unfortunate than her to not feel so alone in her situation but when they get power or confidence she isolates herself and always will find someone or something more alone or vulnerable than her to replace the prior hole left. I like her development as the fact that she was outsourcing her vulnerability just made her life more challenging and that by accepting herself she could progress alone without her dependency behaviour. I think that is an important message throughout all the chaos :)

    Was literally saying all of this stuff the other day about Mamimi. She's the perfect example of why I think the original FLCL was great, while the new FLCL Progressive falls entirely flat. There's just no nuance or attention to detail of character in Progressive now. While the original touched on some poignant ideas of coming of age and egoism, progressive is literally just "THIS SHOW IS ABOUT SEX!" and it's troubling.

    • @fumblebag8458
      @fumblebag8458 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Snazzy not to mention progressive is not at all subtle with its presentation or imagery. On a technical level it flip flops between trying way to hard and falling flat or not nearly hard enough and missing the point of why flcl worked in the first place. But I guess to progressive all there is to being a teenager is "sex and depression lol"

    • @Manganization
      @Manganization 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How is it troubling though? Progressive can't simply retell the story of the original as the original already does that. While the original was more a coming-of-age story, Progressive is about teenagers and learning to deal with your sexuality. It may be less interesting to you, but it's by no means disappointing.
      Either way, it'd be hard for Progressive to fully imitate the original due to the nature of the series. And even harder since Progressive focuses on fewer characters than the original did.

    • @fumblebag8458
      @fumblebag8458 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Eunro really for me it comes down to matter of effort in overall product. This is from just coming off of episode 4 (which I thought was fantastic) and just thinking. "Why wasn't every episode like this?" It felt much more like flcl proper not because it told the same story but because it showed the same kind of creativity and confidence in itself that the original did while telling its own. (A feeling I got from episode 1s opening) it felt much more like a proper sequel than fan fiction.
      That's also why I honestly like the first episode of alternative than the first half of progressive. Sure it was different, VERY different, but it felt much more natural to me. It knew what it was and it didn't try so hard to emulate the "wacky" feeling of flcl but it wasn't such a huge departure that it felt entirely different or lackluster.
      Maybe I'm just having a hard time with progressive because I'm not a teenager anymore and alternatives themes of self doubt and not knowing where your life is going at the end of youth and all that resonate more with me. But at the same time I do seem to remember my formative years being more complicated than sex and sadness. Either way the pillows are great and that's just my two cents. :P

    • @SNOZ562
      @SNOZ562 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Eunro i dont want them to emulate the original, i want progressive to be as *smart* as the original, which it isn't. The themes progressive are exploring are not only less poignant in their messages, but also less creative with the execution as well. The show feels like its trying to be an entirely different show while simultaneously attempting to mimic the original while also not really fully understanding whatade the original great to begin with.

    • @Glorc72000
      @Glorc72000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Episode 5 of progressive is an absolute masterpiece of animation. The rest of progressive isn't bad, but alternative is straight trash.

    Ok dude....this video was amazing. I never even knew exactly what it was that drew me to Mamimi as a character but now I realize it was her solidarity and realization of her own true strength as a character, as much as it was her being the obvious choice of a romantic interest despite Naota constantly spurning her advances. Plus, otaku and gonzo in combination is just a rad screen name. I you just earned a new fan of the channel. Liked and subbed.

    ... Wow. I loved FLCL, but never got ANY of that subtext. I just saw a truly 'out there' story that wasn't intended to make a lot of sense, and was just a bit nuts intentionally. While all that subtext makes sense when laid out, I genuinely didn't see any of it on my viewings.

    I feel like the most important part of Mamimi's arc is right at the end. "So long, Naota" is the last thing she says before leaving. It's the only time in the entire series she calls him by his real name. She finally recognizes Naota as his own person and not a replacement for his brother. She's done with various Takkuns, and is ready to be her own person too.
